What armor is recommended? I main mage but I’ve been doing more melee recently for convenience. Also whats the best way to gain AP?

That guide is helpful, but even then it doesn't go over some details based on price and what's worth and not worth it.
So, to get AP, you need levels. Blaanid will definitely help you with that as it'll practically skyrocket you to 20k cumulative levels (not current level).
Also there's other things, like doing shadow daily shadow mission for AP seals (you can get around 3 per day) and getting a talent level (apprentice, wise, master, etc), and certain quests.
As for armor for mages, sides the Special Harmony Outfit (which is around 700m now cause it's from a gacha) and Glen Scholar outfit (which would cost around 2.5b), there isn't reallly a mage dedicated armor in the game. There is the Lord of Seas outfit, but that is an event outfit from around 5 years ago and we hadn't had a rerelease.
Blaanid Armor, which is given to you, is good enough for most content all around, but is it max damage focused.
Basically you'll have to make/buy a mage armor, meaning enchants/reforges. But since you're early to the game, it won't be good to dump all that info to you. I suggest you use the blaanid armor until than.
