There is a list of names in the credit section of the game, most are probably outdated, though.
You can also ask him to join an official server and see if he can spawn with the backer items. That's a pretty certain way to find out if he actually owns them, not 100% proof, though.
You could also ask a moderator if they can check if he's a real backer
