A while back (~2 years ago), a couple of lads and I came up with the idea of generating a miniature sun as a power source for engineering. With recent events about fusion power coming to light (and the fact this is a sci-fi game), I believe fusion power would be a fun source of power for engineering.
To start off, this theoretical fusion reactor should be a pain in the ass to set up, and could even possibly have R&D needing to research components. This fusion reactor would be a thousand times more powerful and less radioactive than it’s fission-based counterpart (sort of like the singularity engine). The premise is that if engineering is lazy, they could boot up the fission reactor with radiation as a downside while a dedicated engineering department could build a non-radioactive counterpart that requires effort but is much cleaner and powerful.
One final thing could (if gameplay entertainment isn’t impeded TOO much) be that a fusion meltdown is theoretically nothing while the fission meltdown is… well, you know…
