Ubuntu is great for beginners because there's a ton of beginner friendly material available for it online due to its popularity.

It depends on your needs. I like Manjaro myself.

Installing ubuntu involves downloading the iso image from the website, putting it on a usb stick (everything on it will be wiped) and then booting from said usb stick (probably the hardest part because it depends on your bios). After that you can just walk through the installation wizard on screen.
