so your error is because this (SignBlockEntity) mc.world.getBlockEntity(new BlockPos(blockX, blockY, blockZ)); didn't return a signal

thus leading the next line to fail

it depends on whether that's expected or not. At first glance if it's possible there's no block there that you check if the block is null, and if so do nothing on it.

But I'm not a minecraft player/developer so I don't know the details of the game.
