Painting is easy to get into, mind I take the expensive route using watermixable oil paints and all the liquids that come with

Just go to your local art depo and get a starter set of acrylics

You don’t need an easel despite popular belief

You never need to spend this much on a easel and if you do, a £20 feild one will last a long long time

Always go wood rather than metal, I’m just saying that the price goes more into the material rather than the build quality, and with wood, that’s the opposite

My easel is a Mabef M03 or M06, think M03 because I opted for the wheels, but I also have a winsor field easel, a table top one and a cheapy metal one for display purposes

And in terms of brushes, you don’t need artist grade stuff

Artist grade is like £5 to £8 for a small tube but I prefer water mix able because it means I don’t need to always use linseed to make it less viscous and it’s easier to wash and maintain because it dries quicker (still 3 months at the least to get 2cm relitively hard) but the wash ability of water mixable is so good because it’s a pain and never ending cycle with standard oils

You get some on your hands, it won’t come off unless you use white spirit... the white spirit dosnt come off so you use hot water... and now you realise you spent 30 minutes just washing your hands

Canvas isn’t a must have when it comes to high end studio grade stuff... it’s more for how well each one is made, you do get some defects

But I always go cheapest of the mid range stuff, so all of it is derwent or hobby craft

if you get used to how the layer options work on sketchbook, its really powerful, i'd say my understanding of the app makes it about as good as photoshop

mind, ive been using it since the very early days when you had to pay for most of the features

it can be very buggy i will admit, ive had issues with some layers getting permanent streaks if i import other TIF objects ive made and forgot to remove them before exiting

and an animation i was making at school which was about 8 minutes long at the time with so much detail put into it over 8 weeks of hard work... then some layer decided to become a permanent foreground and it was a big piece covering every single slide, it ruined the entire thing and since i hadnt learnt to make backups at the time, that work had to be scrapped because there was no way i could remove, fix or work around it

oh and btw, good tip if you want some incredible inspiration for something wacky

Sketch for an upcoming painting

Working on colours currently to decide what colour pallet I’m going for

I’m currently thinking of a warm tropical yellow for background and a mix of 3 shades of green for the foreground elements

Probs go for terre verte on under sections, a mix of forest green and white with front, and a bit of tere verte and white for left sections

There is a second sketch behind this btw so ignore that one 😂 it’s of a cars front grill

Tubing will be done in a different colour though

That’s the bit I’m still deciding

And then wether or not to add backround elements... probs might simular to how Stuart Davis does his stuff
