Had this convo with a friend the other day, and I was explaining to him this exact concept. and why I felt like an idiot.

When a costumer wants something, they dont go to the specialized store. Even if that store has what they are looking for. If someone is looking for a computer, andd they had the choice of wallmart, best buy, or office depot.

Most will go to best buy, even though wallmart might have a better deal. Thats cause the first place they think of, is the one that is most direct..

So if someone is comissioning artwork. and they want that artwork for a character in an anime like MHA. They are not gonna go to a well established artist, they are gonna go to the guy who does MHA fanart. Even though a pro artist will have no problem doing MHA work. ( like me for example ).,

This is consumer bias

and the sooner you recongnize it, the better you can optimize your comissions. this is something I failed to realize when I first started, so even though I had skills, no one was looking for me. Until I started doing specific fan art for video games, thats when I became a known freelancer

Thats why the best tip I can give you guys if your serious about finding work. Is to find a niche. No matter HOW SMALL , someone will always look for you
