Hear me out! (Idk if someone has talked about this. I avoided reading theories after the release)

  1. A bandito said he "liked this Clancy". Implying that there was a previous Clancy. Clancy is not a name, but a role. Same as Torchbearer. And Nico was previously a Clancy who failed as well. And I think it's a generational role that gets passed on. And this Torchbearer failed to save his Clancy. And the next Torchbearer will also have his own Clancy to find and help. Every TB has a Clancy. Clancy role is the one who leads the banditos and defeat Dema. Torchbearer needs a Clancy to lead.

  2. Same as my first EXCEPT Torchbearer is immortal and in constant search for THE ONE. The right Clancy to defeat the bishops. And once they have finally "broken the cycle", he'll be free from his curse of immortality. His job is done. Although I love my first theory, but I think this one is most likely it, since Torchbearer said they'll try again.

I like the eternal Torchbearer. It makes more sense for the allegory imo, and I just like Torchbearer being such an mvp that he's still hopeful after tons of cycles he's PERSONALLY watched fail. Makes Tally hit REAL hard even by its standards, on both Clancy and Torchbearer's ends
