#Clancy & Breach are about burnout - a video essay

Hey everyone!

Over the last 4 days I’ve been working on something a bit crazy — a 58-minute video essay exploring the idea that Clancy and the upcoming Breach aren’t really about the lore of Dema, but about Tyler’s burnout with the lore itself.
The video does NOT contain any spoilers as I have not gone to any listening parties, and I haven't listened to the L word. Everything I mention here is stuff that I analyzed based off the snippets that the band shared for the songs + the song titles + the track lengths.

Me and 5 friends managed to write a 4,800 word script, shoot at 9 different locations in one day and edit all this all between the 6th and 10th of September. In this theory I go over

  • The decline of the narrative since Scaled and Icy
  • How Clancy works as a covert exploration of burnout - specifically in regards to Trench and the Dema narrative
  • Why I think Breach will be a more overt reflection of it, with a more linear story on Tyler moving past it.

It is a bit rough at times since, as I said, 4 days ago I didn't even know I'd be making this video - and I had to get it out on time before the release of Breach. There also may be some slight errors in the script since it was done mostly in one sitting, even if I and my friends went over it a couple times.

If you do end up watching this, please do NOT write spoilers about how (in)correct my theory may be.

To find the video on YouTube, search "Breach and Clancy are about BURNOUT" and you should find it.
P.S. I understand why the limitation on the links is present, but we've been working day and night to share this video essay before Breach comes out and sharing this afterwards would be pointless. If there is any way a moderator can link it here for me, I'd seriously appreciate it 🙂

Curious to hear what you all think - I haven't seen anyone tackling Clancy and making a prediction for Breach from this angle.

P.S. the cycle torchbearer says clancy is stuck in most definitely reflects the lore creation cycle Tyler may feel stuck in

Watched the video this morning and this feels super in line with my interpretation of breach. I think you cooked with this one bud.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Once breach is out we'll work on an analysis of it with burnout in mind still, this time with better planning so it will actually be of decent quality

im watching this vid rn and this is EXACTLY how i feel

#

i think the lore should have ended post trench

#

leave the city is just as full and complete of a lore ending as the paladin strait/city walls/intentions/drag path ending that we got

#

it took 3 albums and 7 years to come up with an ending that doesnt say anything different to trench (as an album)'s original ending 😭

#

all we really got is insight into the dema world, some of which made it more magical (neds on voldsoy!! livestream experience!! weird ass antler symbolism!?!) and some of which Really Did Not (i HATE the glorious gone depiction in paladin strait, i feel like we'd completely lost the plot by then)

#

i'll give them credit because drag path feels like an actual ending that does justice to the trench storyline, but they didnt even release it 😭
