From a audio/mix engineer stand point - what people get wrong recording and layering wise is not perfecting the harmonies and background vocals to be timed start to stop exactly the same time for your groups, especially if it’s not panned and centered with the main vocals hence why it’s going everywhere and smushing together and weird. So making sure your harmonies and background starts and stops at the exact same time and have a same vocal performance as best as possible is key
Singing wise as a coach - you need to make sure you’re pitch accurate meaning NOT flat and sharp, and it also depends what notes and song key you’re tryna harmonize. If you don’t do correct notes it’s not gonna sound good, imagine you’re tryna sing in D minor so you need to sing and harmonize D F and A notes. Imagine a piano playing those three at the same time it’s beautiful, now imagine playing three different wrong notes that’s NOT in D minor or just doesn’t sound good together such as D#, A and G# it’ll sound wrong, ofc you can check with a actual piano fyi lol
