#What are your favorite words/expressions for a track name ?

Hey guys, all is in the title ! I just had that question popping in my mind, and I thought it could be interesting to discuss about it with some fellow singers, songwriters, music producers, or whatever…It can be everything, from tracks you listen to or sing/play, to tracks you composed or released !

Personally, even if I don’t have my musical project defined just yet, I really like one-word names, as it can sum up a whole atmosphere, without revealing it too much…Anyway, tell me what are yours ! 🙌

It depends on the theme of the song or what lyrics came to me first. Like Fantasy, Little Pieces and The One and Only are ones I'm working on. When it comes to creating beats, I go off on how it sounds to me or the vibe. Like Euphoria, Rainbow or Thunderstorm. Just my little bit.

Yeah, I see, so mostly pop, rock, maybe more emotional stuff also !

Now I plan to use Logic Pro on my Mac mainly, but in terms of apps, I plan to still use DP24 or others, but as a base for sampling, then turning into songs (normally it’s forbidden to extract in-apps samples, but if it’s modified it could pass I guess)
For other apps I also used Figure or Launchpad a lot, sometimes GarageBand, and some others I don’t even remember the name…But it’s always fun to play and improvise with that !

Wow you're a full-fledged pro! Not going to lie, I've never heard of any of those apps before so still got a lot to learn. So what are some track names you've used before?

Let’s say that I take my time for the moment, I like to get curious on mobile, but I also had to uninstall some apps, whether I didn’t like the interface, I didn’t know how to get into it, or most importantly because it wasn’t free… 😂

So, not a pro yet to sum it up, I definitely have a lot to learn before to even fully start my own artist projects…but I have some ideas of the directions it could take, and also for some track names, of course !

I have a note with probably 100+ one-word names (that I will sort once I produce tracks that fit the vibe), and a lot of expressions that will mostly be used into lyrics
My main inspirations would be a lot of well-sounding or not-so-used words ("Clepsydra" for example), or expressions/proverbs ("Right Person, Wrong Time" for example)…Some very simple, yet potentially meaningful or powerful/intense, if I craft the right track to go with !

Fair enough, I’m now in my phase of trying out apps (the free ones 😉 ) on my computer so I can experiment with my vocals and beats.

You just sound accomplished or at least sure of yourself and I think you’re on a good start. 🙂

And wow that’s….a lot of names but I think I understand the appeal of those not really popular words but have deep meaning. So you write, compose and produce altogether I take it?

Would be curious to see your progress with it then ! 🙌

Accomplished, not really, at least not yet… 😅
Let’s say that I have ideas for a few years now, on how to correctly build what I’d like, but I’m still taking my time a lot, doing each step with care/prudence etc…I just have to be careful with perfectionism, it could be a real curse for us creators 😂

As for names, I found it better to have a whole list, even if some will probably never be used at all, but it’s either not to forget them, and add them in an easier way when a track idea would be ready

And actually, yeah, I’d like to do it all, so compose, then writing/singing my own lyrics for vocal tracks, etc, and I already plan to have two projects, one calmer/more emotional, and one to express a more aggressive/explosive side…
So it may sound ambitious and difficult at first, but if I learn a lot, if I dig with rigor etc, I could have a lot of fun with that, at least I hope 🤞

I just downloaded Audio Toolkit on my laptop so I hope that I can atleast create one track although I don’t really have a mic so I always pick up background noises when I sing.

I didn’t mean accomplished as in feats really but that you already have a lot of knowledge on what you want to do and how to get there. There’s probably a better word I could’ve used but yeah. I struggle with perfectionism too, like it has to be perfect rhythm, lyrics, notes etc.

That makes sense, kinda like buying groceries then making dinner. For me it’s more like I think about what I want to have for dinner then have to go buy the groceries. When you organise them, maybe you can do it according to album and have a theme for each album so the names, can fall under each album according to the theme. Or maybe sort them according to vibe and meaning.

Nah it’s pretty cool and definitely ambitious but not impossible especially since you know what you’re doing. Is it more of an outlet for you or like to express creativity?

I hope so too ! Try maybe to use some noise reduction, or a little filter, if you can ! Or if it’s really too loud, maybe you can use it in a creative way ?… x)

Oh, yeah, I got it ! I guess confident and sure of myself would fit, as I already know at least the genres I want to make…which are genres I listen to a lot, for most of them 😂

I like that comparison ! I never thought about that this way, but clearly, if some names fits under the same theme or complete each other nicely, I could definitely use them for an EP, or even an album !
I have a friend who is way more accomplished than me who works that way too, deciding first the album’s name, then tracks’ name, then defining the order, and then sorting his productions to see what could fit the most, etc…

As for me, yeah, it’s definitely both, using that as an outlet, and at the same time expressing my creativity, I think both tasks complete each other very well !

Yeah, kind of ! Try in different places, and with different ways/devices to see what might sound best…even with some earphones, directly on your phone, then exporting it after !

An EP is short for "Extended Play", it’s basically shorter than an album (which can also be called LP for "Long Play") and of course longer than a single format
Generally, you can have from 2 to maybe 7-8 tracks inside, depending on the length, the mood, or if they fit well or not with what you have aside
It can also be a great introduction, either for a bigger project coming up next, or even for the whole artist brand, it can be a good way to expose the foundation of your universe

Yeah, I felt the same way at first ! But sometimes, lyrics or at least toplines comes naturally with melodies, it’s a logical extension, depending once again on the mood, or what you want to give etc…I find the whole process really interesting !

Alrighty, I’ll try it out when I go to the library. I have wireless headphones but maybe earphones might me better because they have the mic you can speak directly into.

Oh man I definitely need to do my homework but I get what it is now. I’m used to just listening to songs I like and never checking for and album or EP so I’m definitely going to do that now.

And that’s so true, when lyrics come to my head I would usually start humming then and then go down the road with whatever comes next. 😄 I can't tell you how many voice notes I have of me just humming. Though when I get to a certain point like say the verse, sometiems it's like a dead end so I'd just end up with a chorus or hook.

Yup, earphones are definitely better, much more suitable !

No problem about that, some of these rules became some kind of norms throughout the years, but not all artists stick to it, some releasing only singles, or only albums etc x)

Voice notes are so fun to record, yeah ! x)
For me, not only I do that for vocal parts, but also for instruments that could assist it (or just that if I think about an instrumental track), with some of the layers (rhythmic or melodic), adding the tempo by tapping in rhythm…everything so that everytime I listen to it again, I could tell the exact intention, and put it in an easier way on a software later

Funny you should say that because it is a chorus. I was working on this yesterday along with another song that popped up in my brain. I had recorded the rough version on the spot a few days ago so I was just trying to fine tune it. I think I would want this one to just be piano for my version and I'll look up what melodic bass means 🙈 . The other song I was working on I actually want it to be rock, kinda like a Linkin Park vibe.

I have the perfect song that summarizes the two thoughts I had, it’s this one

First drop at 1:26 is what I call melodic bass music (in this case melodic dubstep, popularized by artists like Illenium or Seven Lions for example), while the second at 3:43 is clearly rock 👌

I’ve been exploring this genre since more than 10 years now, as I’m crazy about electronic music, but yeah, I was blown away as well when I discovered that track (I think it was on Soundcloud), the uniqueness of it (+ the rock part, it’s very unusual to have it as a drop rather than a break), the atmospheric vibe, the white noises all over the track…yeah, it’s such a banger for sure, one of my favorite tracks in this genre 👌

Pretty scary at the same time though, as it finds everything so easily

But yeah, just only with the tempo I can hear it’s a completely different vibe, yours is slower
