Hii! I'm in a bit of a time crunch to write, record and polish up an original piece so that it actually sounds like a song. I'm pretty confident about writing lyrics myself and a melody, but since I have pretty much no background in production or sound engineering I was wondering if anyone had some tips about where to begin in terms of actually starting a project in digital software. Any tips or guidance would be much appreciated if anyone is willing to help a bit :)

(pls respond to the forum or dm me tyy)

ooh, good luck!! will you be recording any instruments with a mic, or will you be using virtual instruments?

#

mic positioning is very important, so i'd search up stuff about that

#

free/budget software is more capable than ever, plenty of good free virtual instruments and effects out there

#

try to "level out" the volume, this can be done through a combination of good mic positioning and editing

#

and don't overdo effects imo, it's very tempting to add a lot of reverb, eq, compression, etc, but it can end up sounding too extreme

#

i do have a mic but im not sure if instruments need a specialized one? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”

rose cave
#

do you know what type of mic you have?

#

to be honest, most decent mics can be used for both, but there is a baseline of quality required (it should have a frequency response from 50 or lower, up to 12000 or higher hz)

#

plenty of stuff mixes both virtual and real instruments, I think that how it turns out depends on your choice of instruments tho

#

why not? plenty of studios do that

#

it might get messy for a first project, tho

#

(actually, drummers will often put a mic for almost each drum)

#

i mean ive tried recording vocals + guitar once bc i was lazy and it didnt work out too well ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

#

maybe it was positioning?? but im not too sure bc i havent tried that again

rose cave
#

ohh yeah, if you do that then it's better to have 1 mic for your voice and 1 for your guitar

tepid light
#

yeahh

rose cave
#

yes, absolutely, positioning is very important

#

each instrument has specific positioning technique

#

for example, for guitar, you don't want to point it directly at the soundhole, or the sound will be too bassy and boomy

#

it's best to look up how to mic each instrument you want to record

tepid light
#

if i play electric instead dyk if ill have to do smt different with the wiring?? bc i usually just connect it to my amp but idk how i could record the sound

tepid light
rose cave
#

there's several options w electric!

#

you can put a mic in front of the amp (but you need to be careful not to blow out your mic if you do this)

#

you can plug in the electric directly into your computer (if you have the cable and/or interface for it)

#

and once you plug it into your computer, the easiest option is to use a virtual amp (like guitar rig). but you can do some fancier stuff if you have the equipment

tepid light
#

ooh icic

rose cave
#

generally a dynamic microphone is a better choice for micing an amp, since those are much harder to blow out

#

i guess you could also just turn your amp down really low and use a condenser, if you have to

#

again, positioning is important

tepid light
#

also dyk anything about arranging an ambient type beat for a slower pop song?

rose cave
#

hm

tepid light
#

i feel like ive got chords and melody down for the most part but it feels so off without a proper beat

rose cave
#

show an example?

#

i do like to look up drumming sessions or backing tracks for inspiration

#

tho for me at least, that runs the risk of getting too lost in looking up random stuff LOL

#

i managed to spend 3 hours looking up random marching band drum battles once

tepid light
rose cave
#

im fine i promise ๐Ÿ˜ญ

#

theres one drum pattern i heard that got stuck in my head but i can't find the source of

#

but its fine. its been 2 years. its fine. im fine.

tepid light
# rose cave show an example?

maybe something like "did i tell you that i miss you" by adore, "past lives" and like a yung kai sorta feel?? idk how to describe it mostly ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

#

im sorry im pretty bad at this lmao

rose cave
#

no, song names are great! that's a good place to start

tepid light
#

ive mostly only written based on my own like feels

rose cave
#

looking up lo-fi drum samples is probably a good start?

tepid light
#

WAIT THATS GENIUS

#

youre a genius thank you

rose cave
#

i try my best www

#

also, a tip, sometimes, if you have the chords and the melody, it might help to like, beatbox along and see what sticks

#

if you know how to do that

#

at least, you know the boots and cats rhythm right?

tepid light
#
