#To anyone who has gone to or is doing a vocal performance degree

Plan your days so you do your assignments on time, build good relationships with your professors, always prepare your music, when practicing your songs, don't try to learn the whole song at once focus on the sections you're struggling with most and make goals
And I would guess also learn music theory/solfege but in not sure about that still
Thank you for the advice tho! Planning my time has been a weak side of me for a while
Oh those will help you, trust me
As someone who is already a university student, I wish I had learned theory earlier
I think I know how to do chords on the piano intuitively, but I have no idea what chords are
Like, yea I'll play a 5 note chord that resolves whatever was before, but ask me what it is and I'll just list the notes in it
Chords are basically multiple notes played at the same time
Ik what chord are, idk the chords themselves
Major minor fine
Some weird ones from guitar practice too like Em7+9
I'm blessed to personally know a good jazz musician
Those are advanced chords, you don't have to know those unless you want to be a classical composer
Though learning some advanced chords will help so you know how to make good music
Ik only a few of em+ how they are made
Like
D7 is just a D major with an added C
Yes
Though yea I gotta learn sum stuff
I don't find using DAWs enjoyable, but improv on piano or guitar is something I've been trying to learn for a while
What did you all do before going to uni/college?@whole prism
@crystal girder
(Sorry for ping)
Uhm... I was musically inclined since I was little so erm. But I did do things like chorus for a good bit of years.
Not much if I'm being honest.
Well I did take voice lessons a few years before I went to college, but I didn't really have experience learning music theory
I actually had fun learning theory this semester.
I took my finals and passed with an 81!
โจ๏ธ๐คธ
Yoooo let's go!
YIPPIE ๐
So kind of the same as me then huh
We didn't have any chorus/choirs here so I settled with anything I could
Did guitar, some dancing, drums for like a month, and now picked up vocal lessons
ร
Taking vocal lessons definitely helps even if it's not a requirement to apply right?
God I love that letter XD
Yes it would help, even if you don't plan on being a vocal major, having at least the basics of singing down can go a long way
That would seem fun.
meanwhile me basically putting all my eggs in the basket being a vocalist
I like learning about the voice because it can really be beneficial.
Then definitely take voice lessons loll
It's not a good idea I know, and I can't take more than like 3 vocal lessons a month
And even for non-singers, it's just good to learn vocal health because that's important even with talking
But as far as I'm concerned I wouldn't enjoy anything more (maybe drums but that's eh)
Oh yea absolutely
3 lessons a month is a good amount
Especially in highschool where it's always so loud you gotta be able to yell
Got one this Saturday too so I hope for the best
The important thing is to practice what you learn
That's ultimately how you improve
That's the one issue I, and probably many others, struggle with
Living in a commie block with no soundproofing and being too shy to really yell in public
Or anxious I guess? It's smth most people go through I think
There are ways to practice without having to sing loud!!
You can speak the words in rhythm, hum the melody, conduct your tempo, etc.
Low notes are one of those, probably my strongest suit (well, as low as I can really go which is alr)
Nono thing is
So you would be a Bass
My ears are surprisingly accurate, same as voice in terms of notes
Nah I'm not that low, I'm just good at being low in my register
Which is like D#2
Oh ok so more like Baritone probably
Ye
So far if we exclude falsetto it's like D#2 to G#4
Maybe a bit higher but I'm not sure
I was meaning when learning your songs outside of your lesson
Yeah ok that's Baritone
Straight down the middle innit
Though my issues aren't in terms of notes, but intonation and volume
Baritone is like in between Tenor and Bass
Can't practice high notes without going loud, same as proper intonation or specifically belting in my case
Ye
And I think I'm as in the middle of a barritone as it gets
Ik a dude that's a lyrical tenor and man it's one hell of an experience singing with that lad
Loll woww
So using a lotttt of falsetto
Ohh ๐ ๐ ๐
He once sung a song I literally can't reach even with full falsetto
He should use his falsetto then lol
Lemme find the original for it one sec (it's not in English but you can still understand the techniques)
Or rather the tone/notes
Wish I recorded that duet
I will listen to it tomorrow morning, it's late here lol
