Voicemeeter can be pretty frustrating, so I wanted to share a few basic experiences I've had with it.

The first thing that happens when you install it is that it mutes most, but not all, sound on your computer. Uninstalling it will fix this issue, so don't worry if you think you've messed your drivers up or something.

The way to properly fix this is to right-click on the sound icon on your computer (sorry Mac users) in the lower right taskbar, and select sounds.

More down below, I'm breaking this up into multiple posts.

#

Go to the playback tab, right-click Voicemeeter Input, and click on Set as Default Communication Device.

#

Open the Voicemeeter application. The Windows search bar at the bottom left is useful if you don't know where you installed it. (Click on the pictures below if not displaying correctly)

#

If you have the basic program, it looks somewhat like this after opening:

#

First, let's get your microphone set up. Click on the 1 button to the left of Stereo Input 1.

#

Hopefully, you won't need to use the tabs on the left and the default screen will contain your sound device. Click on the sound device or microphone you use for input and then exit.

As you can see, it detects my webcam and my Shure SM57 microphone automatically.

#

Getting there! Now we just need to set up your output. You want to feed your speaker output as input into the stream. Select A1 to the left of Hardware Out.

#

Once again, in most cases the default screen has everything you need unless you have a more advanced setup. Select your sound output device and exit.

For my particular setup, the Shure X2U is both a preamp and has a jack available for headphones. Since I'm not a headphone enjoyer, I just select my computer's speakers instead.

#

Go back to sounds (lower right corner of taskbar)

#

Make sure you default output device is set to Voicemeeter Out B3. If not, change it by right-clicking on it and setting it as the default device.

#

Select User Settings in Discord

#

Scroll down and click on Voice & Video

#

For "Input Device", dropdown the list and select "Voicemeeter Out B1 (...)"

#

For "Output Device", dropdown the list and select "Voicemeeter Input (...)"

#

That should do the trick! Please feel free to add any steps I've missed or other "gotchas" I may have not thought about for a basic audio setup.

#

I skipped installation because you just open up the installation file, click install, and then restart your computer. 😛

Same for uninstall, unless you're a Control Panel ninja.

Almost forgot one last important thing:

Your sound might cut in and out while singing. Adjust your "Input Sensitivity" in Discord by sliding the slider left. Voice & Video options like above. Don't forget to deselect "Automatically determine input sensitivity".

Note: If you have full sensitivity like me, make use of the mute button often! It will pick up EVERYTHING at full sensitivity, especially if you're using a condenser microphone.

And if all of the above doesn't work, this video from some guy on the internet gives the guidelines I followed for my setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEd7jw0uNE4

Voicemeeter, Voicemeeter Banana, and Voicemeeter Potato are extremely useful apps for any Windows user... however, they are so complex very few people stick to using them. In this video I explain how to setup Voicemeeter Banana with EarTrumpet and the Virtual Audio Cables to have a virtual mixer on your desktop computer. This is by far the quick...

Please note he installed the Banana version of the application, so his setup will look a little different.

Under Voice & Video in Discord Settings, don't forget to disable noise suppression! Almost forgot about that.

I'd consider three areas in this order:

  1. Windows playback options
  2. Hardware Out in Voicemeeter
  3. Voice & Video settings in Discord

For example, do you even hear anything from your own headphones / speakers outside of Discord? 1 & 2 above address that.

If 3) is not set correctly, everything else should be working except for Discord.

#

Sometimes, certain applications also require you to update your settings, Reaper (a DAW/Digital Audio Workstation) being the most notable example in my case.

#

For example, I used Firefox and did not have any problems with that.
