Hi! This may sound a little dumb, but in all my years of singing and performing, it has always been cover music. I’ve been wanting to write my own music for quite some time now but I never know where to start or what to do. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m missing something or I’m just insecure about my writing, but I’d love to hear about how others do it.

If it helps, I mainly sing pop, alternative, indie, and some rock. Thanks in advance!

(I've made 12 and released original songs with lyrics, vocals and fully-produced instrumentals)

For me, my process for the lyrics specifically often began by choosing things about myself and my life I wanted to share. I occasionally chose topics of hypothetical futures I wanted to experience like falling in love again, which I draw from imagination and maybe a bit of past memory.

As for the specifics, I am often inspired by lyrics of my favorite songs too, where I might love a line or two in a song and choose to use it rearranged in another way or rephrased. I will also use multiple different types of rhyming and syllable patterns for each song, and even within a single song. The verses may go like this:
Letter = Rhyme
Number = Syllable Count

A7
B9
A7
B9

  • x2

Or,

A7
A9
B7
B9

  • x2

and the chorus may go like this:

A8
A8
A8
B6

  • x2

It's cool to experiment with different rhyming patterns and to change them up in a song, especially if the chords change for the chorus and drop.

The best tool you have for writing good lyrics is a sense of what is good and what is bad. In the end, I think to myself that if this is something I'd be too embarrassed to show my family and friends then why put it online for the world to see? It's easy to share something with strangers on the internet but not with those around you, so use that as a measure of if you really honestly think what you've written is good or not

for me, i get my book out, i put all devices away (distracts my writing process), grab my guitar, find a random chord progression by just messing around, write some words to it, and tada:)

I've made a handful of songs and beats. My lyrics usually came from past events within my life. So I would say think of whatever it is that you like to talk about and convert it into a song. Once you're comfortable, you can expand from it

Usually when I write, I try to have a concept of something I want to write about. It could even be a controversial topic. The way that you talk about that topic can completely change the way the song comes out. I like using idioms and metaphors. Idioms make the lyrics more mysterious and force people to think about what it means. You could also write a story using the same idea. But never forget to save lyrics you don't like, just like the person above me said, you can expand from it.

# shy urchin Hi! This may sound a little dumb, but in all my years of singing and performing,...

For me as a producer/ engineer for artists in the studio, generally with songs I’ll start with some chords or a bass line of sorts before making a melody from improvisation. From there I may scat random things or phrases to get an idea for a cadence or melody for the artist. Then I’ll refine this further by trying to convey a story in the lyrics writing phrases and portraying a picture listeners can imagine. You could hypothetically make random nonsense work but meaning plays an important role in resonating with audiences
