Ah, i got you! I would highly recommend the bands Gojira, Flyleaf, and Deftones. Deftones is more of an experimental rock/alt metal, but I love it and cherish the band dearly. Some good songs to start with from Gojira: Rememberance, Amazonia, Flying Whales..... Any of the Flyleaf songs are awesome too. For deftones, i would recommend starting with Around the fur, My Own Summer (shove it), and cherry waves. These bands are reallly good
rock?
a lot of subgenres

Kinda basic but I recommend queen as a base starter band because they have all kinds of stuff to listen too.
There is no proper way. Theres no wrong or right. For me i listened to Smells Like Teen Spirit in January, and i loved that song. So i started listen to more of their songs. Then i moved on Foos because Grohl was in it, and so on. Its all about just exploring what you like. I look for new bands every week, ill listen to at least 2 songs from 1 band and if i dont like it ill move onto another band.

well this is pretty much a great start
pretty much the start of "Art Rock" and "Psychedelic Rock"
you can use https://rateyourmusic.com to find songs in the similar genre
and there's things called "Ultimate box sets" for each genre
made by Rateyourmusic users
so for example there is this one
there is multiple subgenres of rock
you can also use last.fm and other online resources but Art Rock is one of my favorite rock subgenres
