I'm a beginner. I've only ever written poems and stories, but never songs. I don't really understand the difference between a bridge, verse, and chorus. While I was looking into it, however, I started to wonder whether we had to follow a structure at all. Do artists do that? Can't we just write down what we feel works and let things go from there?

Okay so atleast in my opinion
it really depends, none of us is born as a songwriter and it's really hard
poems are basically songs, back in the day you'd have someone paly an instrument while you were singing/telling you poem
artists do follow some sorta of structure
buuut not every artist
just follow your heart and write down something, try to refine/improve what you wrote and try to hum a tune to follow along the song and then get some instruments, obviously which one you think is better (guitar, piano, drums, etc. literally anything, even your voice)
the only thing you need is confidence and determination, i believe you can achieve anything! <3
hope that helped a bit
thank you! :) It did!
since I usually need examples as reference when I learn, i put a really old poem of mine in chat.gpt and asked it to organize it in verse, chorus, bridge.
I understand the difference between the three now lol
oh my that's actually so smart
