Follows the titular superhero as he reconciles his heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a brighter tomorrow in a world that views kindness as old-fashioned.

Guys I have to say this is the hardest fucking review I have ever made. This is my honest opinion as someone who was moderately excited for the movie. No personal bias and I am not a snyder cultist. Just honest feelings.
My ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…Ā½ review of Superman on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/agsJCz

David Corenswet is a great Superman. He is here to support this world like one of the pillars of the DC universe. This movie establishes Supermans core moral values and how they are perceived by the world. While the setting of this movie is on a quoted "retro-futuristic" period, the main conflict of the movie is very much inspired by the modern ...

# austere stream This whole discourse is all dumb as fuck

I’m looking forward to the political commentary in the movie.

It’s fascinating how some overlook who created Superman and the symbolism behind him.

Def possible that many beloved older films would struggle if released in 2025 due to today’s heightened sensitivities.

it’s wild how treating people with basic decency and respect is now ā€œwokeā€.

ā€œWe don’t go to the movie theatre to be lectured, or have film makers political ideology onto usā€ā€¦ šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

some of the most well received films are political… shoot even the biggest box office movies have some form of political messaging in them when not just viewed at a surface level.

steel ivy
# rugged pier How do you think it'll do?

hmmm,

There budget is 225 million and there is a lot of eyes on the film, I’d assume from shareholders and other people high up at WB to see if Gunns creative vision can generate positive revenue.

Let’s look at gunns movies, and Superman movies (post 2000) and consider the multiplier between box office and budget.

Gunn has the following movies and multipliers based on budget and box office. *I will omit slither, super from consideration as these are extremely small budget and more ā€œindieā€.
I will also not include justice league as that is ā€œavengers ā€œ like movie not largely Superman focused. *

Bare in mind this isn’t super accurate estimate but more just trying to get a rough ball park, sample size of films is super small so take with grain of salt

Multiplier will be defined as,
Total box office = multiplier x budget.
(To calculate these just search up box office and budget)
Multipliers for Gunn:
GoG had a 4.5x
GoG2 had a 4.3x
SS had a 0.9x (covid )
GoG3 had a 3.4x

Superman IP post 2000:
Superman returns 1.92
Man of steel 2.97
BvS 3.49

Guns avg multiplier is 3.3x,
Superman is avg 2.8x

The standard deviation(range about avg):
Gunn: 1.67
Superman post 2000: 0.80

Coeff Variation (this tells us fluctuation):
Gunn 51%
Superman post 2000 29%

So if we go with
Gunn
3.3x (+/-) 1.67x

Superman
2.8x (+/-) 0.8x

If we take out SS (since it occurred during covid, straight to hbo release):
gunn:
avg multiplier - 4.09x
Standard deviation - 0.62x
Coeff variation - 15%
so 4.09x (+-) 0.62x…

So:
budget x avg multiplier
Gun + SS:
742 mill
Gun - SS:
920 mill
Modern Supermans:
628 mill

SD +- 1 (68% of outcomes)
Gun + SS:
367 mill– 1.12 bill
Gun - SS:
781 mill – 1.06 bill
Modern Supermans:
448 mill – 808 mill

**SD +-2 (95% of outcomes) **
Gun + SS:
*0– 1.49 bill (clipped)
Gun - SS:
641 mill – 1.2 bill
Modern Supermans:
268 mill – 988 mill

So id think that
781 mill – 1.06 bill
makes sense if flawless.

Could def see 740 mill or less if post covid impact, superhero fatigue, and anti woke marketing campaign against film is successful.

steel ivy
steel ivy
# unreal widget Is 250 a lot?

the higher the budget the more money it’s gotta make to get a profit, I think ppl use a 1.5-1.7x as break even point, and 2.5x for being moderate ā€œsuccessfulā€

#

So, for Superman 2025:
budget: 225 mill
break even: 337.5 mill
ā€œsuccessā€ : 562.5 mill.

unreal widget

thick arch
#

It was solid, I’ll post me review later after thinking a little more. But this is a nice base for new dcu.

Some brief thoughts, I thought action was nice, cgi looked cool instead of antman 3 slop. Fight choreography seriously is great.

Characters seem to embody what I liked about them from smallville and Superman and Louis, only issue is a 2h movie doesn’t give enough time for the character development (tbh I don’t think there was any? ) Superman and Louis and Smallville are both series which give time for character to have clear character arcs and develop through it . But for the time it does have it makes use of them well. Tho some characters seem kinda 1D though that isn’t to gunns fault, it’s clear he’s going for a more comic booky type adaption that is Modern.

Also liked the political commentary, lol imagine MaF now bans mentioning of Boravia and Jarhanpur

#

the commentary in the movie is so on the nose I’d think anyone not familiar with what it represents prob don’t watch or read world news.

thick arch
# unreal widget What'd I think of the el family

Superman’s parents? ||I’m not sure where gun is going with it. But I’m looking forward to it.

Idk if I buy that the tape wasn’t doctored… I mean shit it’s Lex Luther we are dealing with. And Lex is comically over the top evil in this movie. Him making up shit about Superman having a harem would be something this version of Lex would do, he feels that petty.

Also I don’t recall Clark hearing the second part of the tape when it wasn’t dubbed so it’s possible the second part of tape was falsely dubbed over by Lex and his crew. —Mr Terrific says that others have looked at the tape and it couldn’t have been doctored based on him trusting those people but again… the best way to confirm it would be to have Clark listen to the tape un-dubbed.||

thick arch

they didn’t make her annoying like she can be in smallville sometimes, she also is more conventionally attractive then Superman and Louis version but also feels very similar to that version in terms of writing. Where they don’t just write her to be a damsel 24/7 like smallville .

stone turret
#

there were a bunch of super small details i loved and noted, that im now blanking on

#

the only one i can remember rn is lex having a photo of mr handsome (his alien henchman) on his desk

lex having literal monkeys on keyboards spamming superman hate was very funny

I loved it

stone turret

the random slo mo shot of lex's mug breaking

#

and then the moment his goons pick it all up for him he just slyly knocks it over again like a cat lol

#

another thing i liked was how superman and lois were so casual about a giant cosmic being attacking metropolis

#

realistically it would probably be a pretty common occurrence at this point

#

peacemaker cameo was fun, i think that got the most laughs out of my theater

guys i've got a theory that lex actually has hair

#

my theory is that he isnt bald

primal locust
#

I don’t see Gunn dropping that storyline

mortal trout
# primal locust It’s odd to be this mad about theories ngl lol

it's quite clear in the superman 2025 movie that Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van's message was real which is the point. to show how superman goes against the programming that his crappy conquest-loving biological parents set up for him. instead he not only self-nurtures into a more heroic, optimistic, and self-sacrificing and still flawed human despite being an alien from an otherwordly planet called Krypton but he is also nurtured by the environment of his emotionally stable, healthy, and positive adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, THAT'S LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT

stone turret
#

if the message is revealed to be fake, it literally undoes all of the character development from this movie and invalidates the entire message

it would be the worst narrative choice possible

mortal trout
stone turret
#

the entire point is that its real

#

that superman WAS sent to rule earth

mortal trout
stone turret
#

but by being raised by humans he grew to become the best of mankind

#

if the message was fake, then superman never went against his destiny, he never turned against his heritage to embrace his humanity

his entire ending monologue meant nothing

#

the entire movie meant nothing

#

it would literally be a movie about nothing if the message was fake

mortal trout
stone turret
#

the message being fake would be like if in spider-man far from home it was revealed tony stark was still alive randomly

the entire movie is about superman battling with his kryptonian vs human identity

I don’t know if I agree with this portion, the crux is Lex Luther trying to brand Superman as an alien, people are still swayed to hate Superman as much as he does, Lex in this movie is egotistical asf right? If he doctored the second half how does that invalidate the ending monologue, how does it mean nothing? Supes is still spitting facts?

Saying the entire movie means nothing just because of that doesn’t seem to trek? There is a whole lot more to this movie than just the idea of Superman disobeying his ā€œdestinyā€ by his going against the directives of his family,— tbh that point was one I didn’t much care for.

Watched Superman and it was so much fun. DCU world created by Gunn is just so interesting with metahumans already existing for 3 centuries, this is a totally fantasy world. Performances were great all around, from David as Superman to Rachel as Lois, supporting casts were great too but I did wish some of them were more fleshed out. I absolutely didn't expect Mr. Terrific to be so good. Action scenes are amazing, some a bit chaotic at times, didn't have much problems with CGI except a few shots. I actually liked Krypto in this movie.

Lex is a great villian and man, he has quite a few tools under his disposal, like a pocket universe which was cool and Lex putting his ex girlfriends in that dimension was something i didnt expect. Ultra man being a clone of Superman made sense. The ending was fantastic with Lex now in prison and Superman redeemed. Btw, nice reveal for Supergirl too and Krypto is actually her dog.

I Just watched Superman. David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Edi Gathegi gave solid performances as Superman/Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Mister Terrific/Michael Holt respectively.

Corenswet’s performance was well done. He delivered a charismatic Superman, striking a balance between lightheartedness and seriousness when it was required in the story. It’s the best live action take on the character since Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrayal.

Hoult brought a sinister take on Lex Luthor. He portrayed Lex as a very malevolent man with no redeeming qualities, someone willing to do anything to achieve his goals. It’s a great direction in an age where many villains are made to seem sympathetic. His performance is the best one after Michael Rosenbaum and Gene Hackman’s live action versions.

Brosnahan’s Lois was amazing. She really nailed the spirit of the character. It felt like a live action version of DCAU Lois, and at times she even reminded me of Margot Kidder’s portrayal.

Gathegi’s Mister Terrific stood out among the other members of the Justice Gang. He played the character as a cool and stoic genius, the third smartest man on Earth, who uses his signature floating T-Spheres to analyse and fight his opponents.

Jonathan and Martha Kent were wholesome and the actors did well. One standout scene was between Clark and Pa Kent, where Jonathan talks about how our choices define us. He tells Clark that just because his biological parents were awful people doesn’t mean he has to be. He chooses to be good, and that’s what matters.

The action scenes were entertaining and the final fight against Ultraman was good. Ultraman is revealed to be Clark’s clone, created by Lex, but dumber and more ruthless, controlled by his minions. Maybe it’s possible he ends up being Bizzaro in the upcoming films. Krypto was also a fun addition.

Now, onto the issues.

#

One major problem I had was with the portrayal of Kryptonians. After Lex decodes the full message from Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, it’s revealed that the Kryptonians were a conquering race. They wanted their son to rule over humanity, seeing humans as weak and to impregnate as many women as possible to ensure the survival of their species. This felt off from the lore. Reviewers praised the movie for its comic accuracy, but this change was the equivalent of Jonathan Kent’s infamous death scene in MOS, which was controversial to say the least. According to Terrific, the message wasn’t even doctored, which made things worse. It reduced Superman’s origin to something closer to the Saiyans from Dragon Ball or the Viltrumites from Invincible. It’s a classic sci-fi trope, where the aliens are portrayed as bad guys.

The Justice Gang didn’t feel necessary. Their inclusion made the film feel bloated for what was supposed to be a solo Superman movie. Mr Terrific was more than enough. In fact, he felt somewhat underused despite his capabilities. The final battle between Clark vs Engineer and Ultraman should’ve been cut down. It would’ve been great to see Terrific handle Engineer on his own with his ingenuity.

The camerawork was inconsistent, shoddy and unpolished at times. Otherwise the film looked fine. The score however was forgettable. It felt pale in comparison to Williams’ legendary theme in Superman or Zimmers powerful score in Man of Steel.

Gunn’s decision to nerf Superman’s power was also questionable. You don’t need to weaken a godlike character to humanise him. The comics, the Donner films, and the animated adaptations have always balanced his overwhelming power and humanity.

Overall, this was a decent flick. I give it a 3/5, which was the same rating I gave Gunn’s previous superhero films, like the GOTG trilogy.

#

I liked the ending, where Clark reminisces about his memories with his adoptive parents. The post credit scene had an interesting cameo in which Supergirl was drunk while trying to get her dog, Krypto. I’ve seen people criticise this portrayal, but in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, she is shown to be drunk, and that’s the comic they’re adapting.

#

Another issue I forgot to mention is the overdone humour during serious situations. It’s typical Gunn, so I’m not surprised this was a problem in the film.

I thought Justice gang played a good role but the role wasn't that huge imo, Mr. Terrific was great.

I don't get why you think Superman was nerfed?? Like yes he couldn't destroy planets and stuff but he could get out of Black hole by his mere breath.. took out those raptors and I also think that because superman believes every life is valuable, he isn't using his powers at his full extent.

Also.. if Superman is this god like figure who can destroy anything he touches.. its not gonna be a easy story to write. Superman is the strongest metahuman on Earth.

There’s another scene iirc where he moves a ship in BvS. Reeve Superman does better against Zod and his minions.

#

Whereas, Corenman struggled a lot against Ultraman. I think he’s nerfed a lot, which even Gunn confirms.

craggy pawn
#

Again for me.. Gunn's Superman wasn't nerfed.. he's still the strongest superhuman in DCU, he's holding back a lot of times because he doesn't want to kill anybody

Hence the ā€œBrains over brawnā€ comment

#

Anyways, let’s agree to disagree.

craggy pawn
thick arch
wind adder
#

There’s even a scene in this movie, where Superman lays down like Yamcha from DB.

#

Gunn didn’t want to portray him all that powerful because he thought it’s boring. He also mentioned why he prefers Batman for this reason

craggy pawn
#

I'm glad Gunn didn't make Superman all powerful

wind adder
#

Corenswet’s Superman in terms of performance is only below Christopher Reeve, which I’ve mentioned in my review. Only issue with this Superman is that he’s somewhat weak.

#

Considering how some reviewers were praising the comic accuracy of the movie, I find it odd he nerfed him. The Kryptonian heritage aspect is also a significant issue, which is weird lore wise.

craggy pawn
#

Well, when Superman was first created in 1938.. he couldn't even fly, so he wasn't this all powerful superhero in the beginning

wind adder
#

By the end of GA era, Superman was incredibly powerful.

craggy pawn
#

My only point is that Superman wasn't always portrayed as all powerful in the comics.. he was even killed at one point and Gunn took inspiration from many comics.

Again, personally I don't even think Superman was that nerfed in this movie.

wind adder
craggy pawn
#

BTW.. Superman killed those raptors quite easily.. doesn't look like someone who was nerfed and weak

wind adder
#

What were some of the other things you felt you needed to explain to make this Superman work?
There are things that I know I don’t explain that I don’t even want to say out loud! But I wanted Superman to be vulnerable. I see the online things ā€œWho would beat whom?ā€ — Homelander or Superman or fucking whatever, Adam Warlock or Brightburn, and I’m like, ā€œThis is the fucking stupidest fucking conversation.ā€ Like, so then whoever would win this fight means that they’re the best? Because I’ll just go out and write God Man, who can destroy you with a wink. And I win. I win all the fights forever. But I didn’t want a Superman who could punch planets. And also we’re creating a whole universe now, so what’s a girl with wings gonna do in the face of that? So he’s a little less powerful. [Green Lantern] Guy Gardner’s pretty fucking powerful. They’re all pretty powerful.

This is what Gunn said in the interview

safe geode
#

enjoyed , but man does Gunn not like women?

safe geode
rustic yacht
#

I like the human moments

#

It’s a shame they’re few and far between

safe geode
#

I like that it showed he can get beat up, but it literally took a another superman to beat him

#

and he still beat that one

wind adder
safe geode
#

the interview scene in the first 20 min was actually compelling

rustic yacht
#

I like it

#

But that’s about it unfortunately

wind adder
#

What’s your rating?

thick arch
safe geode
#

this is the most human superman for sure

rustic yacht
#

6

safe geode
wind adder
#

Same. It was decent

rustic yacht
#

Its being presented as a human story but instead of focusing on humans we’re in a pocket dimension fighting 3 villains and the world is being split in half

#

It’s quite contrasting in its messaging and actual events

#

But I love the politically charged nature of it

safe geode
#

this movie does not pass the bechdel test

wind adder
#

Tbh I didn’t care about the politics.

rustic yacht
#

I think that’s the best part

thick arch
rustic yacht
#

Superman is the perfect character for a politically charged story

safe geode
#

then i'd say that yea, it was focused more on driving the story than as much character driven

rustic yacht
#

And that’s done quite well

safe geode
#

except jimmy

#

hes fully fleshed out lol

rustic yacht
#

The core of the story is clearly supposed to represent a current world event that we cant talk about in here

Lois and Clark’s relationship could’ve gone literally anywhere

safe geode
rustic yacht

That’s why I think the messaging is not translated very well

wind adder
#

That Mr Terrific scene is cool as shit.

rustic yacht
#

The argument is that Superman is human but we only really see him do magical stuff

#

Fighting in a pocket dimension and saving the world from tearing against an evil clone

#

Not enough Lois and Clark romance, not much Daily Planet, not enough with his parents

#

The ending with his growing up moments is great but doesn’t feel very earned when they’re barely in it

wind adder
#

I guess the film long could’ve been longer

blazing vigil
rustic yacht
#

I think time should’ve just been spent elsewhere

#

Get rid of Ultraman and the pocket dimension and you have like 40 minutes there

Love how they made it out that Superman is his own man, and not someone that is lead by his parents.

safe geode

All of the stuff is there but it’s not very explored

wind adder
#

The Ultraman bit was definitely inspired by The Boys. Even even the outfit resembled Black Noir’s.

safe geode

but like a human, he tried his best at what he could, which is protecting everyone else from getting crushed by the monster while messier heroes take the monster down

DCU Superman is basically Brightburn all grown up, if he was good.

what did yall think of the non orchestral track usage, for example during scene with Mr Terrific? Did that bother anyone

rustic yacht
#

Fun scene

mortal trout
rustic yacht
#

The score was unremarkable

#

But I expected that when they hired a nobody to quickly come and fix it

safe geode
wind adder

Also, Corenswet’s Superman was also pretty serious when required. More angry than Christopher Reeve version. Snyder fanboys online were criticising how campy this Superman was lol.

#

They didn’t watch the movie

safe geode
#

I like an angry superman

thick arch

I felt that specific scene music choice seemed kinda to much gog rather than other orchestral tracks that were used. It also took me outa the scene, which is a cool scene.
