i havent gotten into Ozu yet, besides Tokyo Story. but theres also Late Spring, and Early Summer, and more
Kobayashi has Harakiri, and The Human Condition trilogy, and more
recently, Shoplifters, and Drive My Car have been among my favorite movies of their years (Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy also good, Still Walking i havent seen yet)
theres the Edo gothics: Ugetsu Monogatari, Kwaidan, Onibaba, Woman in the Dunes
Sansho the Bailiff i havent seen. theres also the Zatoichi movies
Miike directs several movies per year. the favorites seem to be Audition, 13 Assassins, Ichi the Killer
Sono Sion is probably love-it or hate-it. i love Antiporno and Guilty of Romance and Why Don't You Play in Hell
the J-horror wave, can probably just watch Ringu and stop there
The Face of Another is another good horror movie. and Cure.
weird stuff like: Hausu, Tetsuo the Iron Man, Battle Royale, Godzilla, Jigoku. Female Prisoner 701 Scorpion is a good exploitation movie
more shlocky samurai stuff like: Lady Snowblood, Hanzo the Razor, Lone Wolf and Cub
i havent seen Tampopo, but people like it
Jiro Dreams of Sushi was a documentary that won a ton of awards
then for animation: every ghibli movie directed by Miyazaki or Takahata, plus some others like Whisper of the Heart. every Satoshi Kon movie. and Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Redline for sure. maybe also Ninja Scroll. and other modern animation directors who are good: Shinkai, Hosoda, Yamada, Yuasa

i forgot yakuza movies, which i havent seen, like Branded to Kill and Battles Without Honor and Humanity
