Initially yes, but then Germany surrendered and Japan according to US had no intention to surrender and remember that Allies had been bombing Japanese cities for months and killing hundreds of thousands of people.

lusty cedar
#

That's a view from us government
Whether oppie share the same view would be up to debate

kind robin
#

So, ya for them it is either drop few atomic bombs and they would surrender or send hundreds of thousands of Americans into Japanese mainland and islands.. get slaughtered in the thousands and maybe they will surrender

kind robin
lusty cedar
#

The first argument isn't nessecary accurate. He was the head of a mega program, crap like that, if you ask someone to stop when they are so close, they aren't gonna stop lol

kind robin
#

Yes exactly and then it was never upto him to decide how it was gonna be used and he says that too.

lusty cedar
#

Oppenheimer had a huge ego, no way he would stop building the bomb even if Japan surrender

kind robin
#

That's a possibility yes esp after 2 years and 2 billion dollars.. even if he wanted to stop, US govt would just hire another scientist to complete it.

lusty cedar
#

That's a lot nowaday, back then, it would be an unmaginablr amount of moneu

kind robin
#

Absolutely.. they literally built a new town and had thousands of people living there.. this was a mega project and Hitler (because he thought quantum physics wasn't real science) never agreed to Marshall so many resources.

#

It takes a lot to have enriched Uranium and Plutonium.

R&D Mega project is a beast that most people probably don't even understand lol

Yup and the amount of scientists involved.. like there were hundreds and the movie only showcased most famous ones.

I do love the parallel between him almost taking a life with a poison apple, but didn’t and then creating at the time the most dangerous weapon ever. Which would eventually kill a lot of people. I just really liked that part of the script when watching the movie.

#

I read the book and yeah, people found out about the poisoning and he got in a little trouble for it. For how accurate the rest of the movie is, it did feel weird for me personally when I saw that scene because I was familiar with the situation. I do think the thematic reason for the change is a nice one and feels cinematic when I noodle over it.

#

Overall I'm happy that the earlier part of his life had the least amount of attention. The movie could have felt miserable if it dove too deep there. He really didnt have a good time in his formation years.

So hyped for Oppenheimer 2

stark mason
#

I loved the movie. The bomb sequence was very cool. However, I think it could have been much better if noland would have allowed for vfx.

I think the bomb its self was very nice, but as soon as its over and the sun comes up, we never see the aftermath

#

No smoke in the background, nothing

#

the mushroom cloud would have lasted for hours, yet there is nothing to show when the sun comes up. This is obviously because they didnt want to use cgi. but a photorealistic simulated mushroom cloud in the background would not have been out of reach

#

I honestly think that NOT having the cloud in the background/after math of the bomb shown, took me out of the immersion more than a simulated mushroom cloud that doesnt look quite right would have.

#

does anyone agree?

silent gust
#

I can somewhat agree

#

I wasn't pulled out of the immersion though, but i definitely see where you're coming from. I think seeing a crater and mushroom cloud would've been a nice touch definitely.

#

but i still give this film a 5/5

stark mason
#

The film was very spectacular, and I wasn't pulled out of the immersion so much. I personally just have a morbid fascination with massively destructive things like nuclear bombs. So I was expecting to see a lot more of the bomb.

Then again, the point was probably not to completely show off everything about the bomb. It is in the 1st person perspective of Oppenheimer himself. So maybe its that he never looked back at the aftermath, because he was so horrified of what he created??

silent gust
#

Oh for sure I think anyone who doesn't believe this film is great genuinely just wants to be different. i dont blame you for that obsession with nuclear bombs, ive had a fascination on everything WW2 including the bombs since i was very little and seeing it on the big screen this well done just made my inner child so happy. I really liked what you said about how its all in Oppenheimer's perspective and that's why Los Alamos and the aftermath was never looked back upon

#

at least not much

stark mason
#

Yeah

silent gust
#

Also my friend and I had different understandings with Gene's "suicide"

#

Did you catch the hand pushing her head under the water?

stark mason
#

Yeah i was a bit confused with that

#

when they originally showed the clip after oppenheimers visit with her, i thought that he killed her

#

but i dont know what to think about that

silent gust
#

So my friend thinks that the government did that in a way to stop Oppenheimer from meeting with people who shared Communist pasts or are still involved in the Communist party. But i think its Oppenheimers guilt and how sees it as his fault that she died so he envisioned himself pushing her head underwater

#

I could just be overanalyzing it though

stark mason
#

I like your theory

#

that was while he was having that episode in the forest too

silent gust
#

cause my friend brought up the point that he was being followed to Gene's room so there's also that

silent gust
stark mason
#

IRL he was diagnosed with Dementia cortex which was the old term for schizophrenia

#

so it makes sense that he would have very distorted and horrible visions about that

silent gust
#

Yeah exactly

stark mason
#

and with the charred body he stepped on after he gave a speech

silent gust
#

ohhhh man

#

i loved that whole scene

#

definitely one of my favorite ones

stark mason
#

That whole sequence was genuinely terrifying

#

my heart was racing

lusty cedar
#

Man, the real life is a bit more terrifying than that

silent gust
#

seeing the wide range of emotion throughout the audience was so offputting and anxiety enducing

stark mason
#

yeah

silent gust
#

also on a side note. The Bomb explosion scene in my opinion is one of the best scenes in film history. I have seen so many damn movies and that one just made me feel a way i have never felt in my life. Seeing the beauty in such a chaotic weapon with no sound other than the slight breathing of Oppenheimer as he utters his infamous line

stark mason
#

Yeah that scene was intense

#

the entire theater was just silent

#

did you watch it in imax?

silent gust
#

I plan on seeing it in IMAX soon. I watched it twice on a normal theatre screen

#

US current nuclear arsenal, especially ICBM is crumbling and expected to start phasing out by 2030

stark mason
#

Our current stockpile is 3,708 right now whick is much lower than it was. and we are dismantling retired warheads.

#

But still 3,708 warheads is a shit ton.
A nuclear world war would be very short and would most likely spell the end of humanity.

#

which is why i dont think that we will ever have to start making more nukes and testing them. Because almost nobody wants to end humanity.

lusty cedar
#

We are actually making more nukes lol

silent gust
stark mason
#

yeah

stark mason
#

and underwater tests happen often

lusty cedar
#

I don't know much about sea based of the nuclear triad

stark mason
#

But I am not concerned that the US would ever get destroyed by nukes. Even if North Korea were to launch nukes toward us. We would have intercepted them before they even get to our coast, and we would most likely level them

lusty cedar
#

Ehhh I kinda doubt that. 1 missile ? Maybe.
A bunch of them at a timr? Probably not

#

We probably won't be destroyed for sure

#

But we won't be scratch free

stark mason
#

Maybe. It would take approximately 33 minutes for a nuke to reach the US from north korea. Our nuclear detection systems would let us know pretty much the instant one of those get launched and we have so many ships out at sea that have the capability of shooting them down.

#

It would take a lot

We might get away with single nuclear strike. But as the attack increase, our success rate would likely go down.

plucky ferry
# low palm why was it rated R? sure there were some boobs būt Asteroid city had full nudity...

Possibly because in Asteroid City, it was non-sexual. The Simpsons Movie showed Bart's wang for a few seconds and was still PG-13, since it was non-sexual (and animated). Hell, American Beauty showed a topless 16 year old girl with an R (the nudity was deemed artistic).

Whereas Tatlock and Oppenheimer had a full-on sex scene. So when we're seeing Florence Pugh's boobs, the intent was sexual in nature. Blame the MPAA. Here in Canada it was 14A (similar to 15 in the UK or MA15 in Australia)

#

I've also seen Emily Blunt do a British accent (The Five-Year Engagement) and now an American Accent. "You shook his fucking hand?!" Emily stole the show as Kitty

#

Nolan's shitty writing really shines here, showing he's truly in over his head, thinking his writing can withstand a 3-hour biopic about one of the most important men in history.

I saw it in IMAX, 70mm, and I have no words to describe my hatred for it. It's just a complete bore, and the final act after the trinity test might be one of the most dragged-out final segments I've ever watched.
I saw it in a packed theatre, and I mean PACKED! Before the trinity test, half the theatre had left, and half of the half still left had fallen asleep only to be woken by the sudden, loud jump cuts that serve no purpose but to keep the few people still left in the theatre awake. One brave soul amidst the Nolan meat riders shouted, "Fuck This!" as he left, and I don't blame him.

I do see the importance of the film; Im not stupid. But Nolan is way out of his league with this story. Especially if he thinks his horrid screenwriting can commit to a 3-hour movie about one of the most important men in history.
The music in EVERY scene only gives the viewer something else to listen to apart from the constant talking. And the music gets extremely boring very quickly. It makes the film feel like a 3-hour trailer.

Disagree with me; I don't give a shit. But the number of people who share my same opinion speaks complete volumes, and it was my second watch...

I just read an article about why it might be hard to hear some dialogue in the movie.

According to the article that I read, Christopher Nolan said that he "liked to use what was recorded in the moment rather than do some additional dialogue recording later".

#

I can understand how it cuts budget corners, but I still think that's a bit of a lazy approach.

#

That's honestly my only complaint about Oppenheimer.

kind robin
#

Studios are already hemorrhaging so much money from production to marketing and the idea that they are paying critics to review a movie is absolutely ridiculous..

Plus.. to have a good RT rating, studios would need to pay a lot of critics as well and again, Why would they do that?? If the movie is really good then critics will like it many times.

kind robin

Where did you hear that nonsense?? I hear that a lot of actors actually take a pay cut to work with Nolan like the production budget of Oppenheimer is 100 million dollars which is crazy to me.

Also, WBD recently gave millions of dollars to Nolan to entice him to return back to WBD.

glass agate
#

Then why did they release Oppenheimer and Barbie on the same day?

kind robin
#

Oppenheimer is a 3 hr serious drama with literally no action and that movie has already made more than 400 million dollars..

kind robin
#

According to your logic.. Paramount must hate Tom Cruise because his MI movie was released just 1 week before Barbenheimer and that has cost it money.

But didn't Christopher Nolan openly criticize Hollywood for the way the handle things?

I mean, I would too, because of how they favor what fans want over director's visions.

Intreresting. Since this film is about real life people it was hard to follow along with all the names, which sucked since the first act was like a WW2 film with all the introductions (e.g. Borden or Teller). The inconsistent mixing and the score being so overwhelming at times are some early criticisms that come to mind. I'll see what other critics have to say.

The breakneck pacing did make three hours fly by, though. Compare that to EEAAO which had a runtine of 139 minutes but felt like double that. Pacing was too slow for my tastes.

Another thing I forgot to mention was, maybe it's because it was on film and I'm used to digital, but the image quality of IMAX 70mm just felt...off. I'm not sure how to describe it. The colours looked muted, and not crisp.

Outside of a few scenes, I'm not sure IMAX 70mm was really that necessary. Seeing the NM landscapes or the Trinity test in the old-school true IMAX format was an incredible spectacle, don't get me wrong, and I'm glad I went, but I think only the second act truly "needed" that format, you know? The rest of the movie would probably look better in dual laser or even UltraAVX (gasp!)

Overall, solid film with some amazing cinematography/effects and show-stealing performances, but not perfect.

Universal is the studio with the shortest digital window too so they’d be on this quicktime

They do 18 days in cinemas before digital

@blazing notch how many movies is Nolan gonna make with universal

They didn’t sign a multi picture deal or anything

But it’s very likely he’ll go to them for his next film

Couldnt fault him not wanting to give his heart to a set studio going forward after WB

I think at most Oppenheimer will cross 800 million dollars but 900 million dollars isn't impossible as Oppenheimer will be in theatres much longer than barbie which is coming on digital in September 5

I don't think it will reach a billion.. I mean 300 million dollars is a lot of money and I believe a lot of people have already watched it.. also there's no major movie market left too.

I would love if Oppenheimer crossed a billion but I don't see it.

Nolan movies have always released on home media like at least 4 months after the initial release in theaters. Shame that isn't the norm. I remember seeing Inception in theaters 3 months after it was released.

Things have changed with streaming a lot and for me personally I think a 45 day window works, if people are really interested in watching a movie in theatres they will do so within that time.. otherwise it goes into VOD first and then streaming.

I think one of the best parts of Oppenheimer was how Gƶransson completely remixed the notion of air raid sirens into those triumphant horns and as Oppenheimer succumbs to the gravity of what he’s set in motion the horns return to the deeply ominous territory that air raid sirens occupy
