#🎥 Oppenheimer
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
General theory is that it’s CIA or some form of government
Eh
He could of done it as a way to cut her off
I don’t think so
Maybe someone killed her as she had become distraction to Oppenheimer
And US govt didn't want that .. they needed full focus of Oppenheimer
U think security dude did it?
👀
Kitty maybe
👀👀👀
Kitty
Ong
She has motive
Damn
It was kitty
I doubt that
Ong
I mean he was clearly extremely upset by it, he said “she still loved me” and I think the implication was him admitting “I still loved her”
I mean this happened in real life, it would be absurd for Oppenheimer to have murdered a person he loved
How was she there then?
It was kitty or security dude
👀
Kitty didn’t give a fuck when she died
She told Oppenheimer to suck it
Idk..
Not really, the authors of American Prometheus say it wasn't really clear what happened.
It wasn't Kitty.. she was with Oppenheimer during the incident
No?
After
She ran to him on horse
she dealt with depression its on wiki
please stop with these stupid theories 💀
the hands mightve been symbolism of how oppenheimer felt guilt
as he was the one whose fault it was
Ok
Yeah I doubt she was murdered
It’s just cool that he slipped that in there
I think the only thing to theorise on is what nolan thinks
Cause he slipped it in there

Scariest and favourite part of this IMO is the stomping noise
I dunno if it’s intentional or if I’m reaching but it felt like a pretty clear metaphor for the bomb itself IMO
Stressed u the duck it
Fuck
💀
Yeah
I think the best since isn’t the bomb going off, but probably the scene where he’s at the school giving the speech
The bomb going off is probably the third best scene IMO
Bro, movie stopped for me halfway during my IMAX screening.
Lol. That has never happened to me before, but it makes sense since it’s hard to run 70mm IMAX film.
So far, it’s enjoyable.
Dialogue heavy, but intriguing. Learning a lot about Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer himself and how scientists and physicists work.
Oppenheimer is just a complex figure. He seems to be distant, unable to process emotion, yet smart and brilliant.
How far in were you?
Like last scene you watched
Oh also this seems to be a common issue with 70MM imax
I’ve completed Barbenheimer, I’m landing at 5/5 for Oppenheimer, and 4/5 for Barbie
Going 4/5 for barbie and 4.5/5 for Oppenheimer
Just watched it in IMAX and it was amazing!
Ontario?
The Truman scene and the one where he is giving a speech and the background starts vibrating as he thinks of the bombings are the best
that gymnasium speech scene shows the horrors of the atomic bomb without even showing any gore or violence
feels like a horror movie
Ya, it was chilling
man I hate that there is no option to watch in imax where I live
I feel like one of my criticisms was that he used too much intense sound (I saw it in IMAX). It would have been better if he used it sparingly to a shock effect. Thoughts?
I'll be able to answer that on monday
hmm I didnt really mind this but I see what you mean.
ive not been a lifelong YMS defender and this is bullshit lol https://twitter.com/NeekoReviews/status/1682717748353179648
Don't know who this is but this rating is ridiculous
love him
the blueprint for generic annoying music hipsters who really seem to genuinely despise film
nah hes funny
6 stars for oppenheimer idk about
but I can see why some say barbie is better
he's just way too picky imo
his vid on the little mermaid was pretty good
I thought the sound design was one of the best aspects imo
Funniest shit ever
Kon...
Nolan and Murphy checking out movie DVDs
everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but WHAT???
I genuinely feel he just likes being the "am i the only one who had issues with the film you all love?" guy
I should wait to see what his specific takes are with it but alot of the time I hear his critiques on films, they're just insanely nitpicky or wrong
I think it's fair to have issues with a film while also appreciating it's insane technical greatness and general ability to please an audience
i actually take my words back, Oppenheimer does strike me as a Scary Movie type film
I wasn’t a fan of the whole courtroom storyline. That wasn’t was compelling as the creation of the bomb, but I understood why Nolan chose that framing device to tell Oppenheimer’s story.
That was it! I was sitting in the middle.
I will say I wish some of the more prominent recurring actors in the film were also included in the main cast billing, and not just the Oscar winners who had like 5 minutes in the film
Hahah yeah, Downey overacted a bit, but he was great.
David Krumholtz and Benny Safdie were far more involved than Rami Malek and Casey Affleck
It was just hard to keep up with every major and minor character.
Nolan also likes to jump back and forth.
But I like the movie overall.
Downey made sense being in the main cast billing, but idk if the ones mentioned or even Pugh should've been
Lol. Yep.
Pugh’s role was significant enough.
hell, Jason Clarke should've been too
But man, Oppenheimer was one hell of an interesting person.
This was a good character study.
i think the issue more so that the casting was too distracting. In some scenes you'd literally have a list actors as background extras
yeah, it's kinda hilarious Alden Ehrenreich is literally playing "Senate Aide"
yeah, perhaps. I guess I was just looking at the amount of time she was in, and I think in total Jean Tatlock was in ~10 minutes
I guess I'd retain the billing block they chose, but include specific additional names
like apparently Gary oldman played Truman, I just remembered
Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Benny Safdie, Jason Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich, Tom Conti, Dylan Arnold, Casey Affleck, with Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh
oh shit
I totally forgot that was Dane DeHaan as Nicholls
Ya so many big name actors in this movie..
Honestly the only thing weighing this down from a 10/10 IMO is that the first act was edited really poorly and kept jumping back and forth too quickly
Like
I don’t mind having the post bomb court stuff at the start I liked that
But it’s so frequent between after the bomb, being recruited to make the bomb and before being recruited
Just lost track at points
It's Oppenhover
Oppie's expression here
I feel for him
He’s not afraid because they’re cheering for the bomb he’s afraid because all the flags are wrong
So
The chances of Oppenheimer surpassing TDK are near zero
Near zero?
What do you want from previews alone?
Zero would be nice
This movie is better anyway
he's pretentious for sure, mf gave the first Spiderverse a 6
Lol there were people behind me giggling lol
There was a man next to me that answered his phone 3 times
I feel like that is too many times
My uncle answered phone during transformers
Bad movie and no one in theatre
Oppenheimer line tho
Why Elon

No why. Lol.
elon ripped the joke anyway
Lol. I didn’t pick up on that. Haha.
if ur counting stars on a flag..
Didn’t he stole that joke?
yea
Classic Elmo
lol
I wasn’t even paying attention to the flag.
She has definitely lost her mind.
Unfair to history? The fuck does that even mean? Too talky? It's not an action CGI flick idiot.
Not good use of IMAX? What!?
Oppenheimer kino.
The ending honestly terrified me when I was in the theater, showing and reminding us of how dangerously powerful nuclear weapons are, and how much they can destroy.
fr
Ain't no way that's an actual thumbnail, that is bullshit
real
Like I’m tryna remember what was Strauss motive on Oppenheimer
Like why did he want to go against him
time to rewatch
💀
Well, he felt insulted by Oppenheimer like when Oppenheimer talked about Strauss being a shoe salesman, then he thought that Oppie was talking negatively about Strauss with Einstein and that's why Einstein ignored him.. there's also that hearing regarding exports of isotopes where Oppenheimer made fun of Strauss.
Of course another huge reason is that Strauss wanted to develop H bombs and Oppenheimer was against that and hence he needed to silenced.
In my opinion, this is Nolan's best film since Interstellar.
Yeah it’s a really complex film. I’m trying to collect my thoughts, but I see a theme of betrayal. Oppie betraying science, one of his team for the Manhattan project betray him to make Russians create their own H bomb, and America the who he give him the atomic bomb revoke his security prviliages
But still trying to collect my thoughts of this film
And then the ending scene with him saying to Oppenheimer that he believes that his theory in the ending comes true
But more delayed and later
Ya but again it definitely needs a rewatch for better understanding the movie.
Seeing the Konbini video, Nolan says the B&W scenes are in Strauss's pov, while the color scenes are in Oppenheimer's pov.
i had to see twice. didnt understand shit first time
😂
second time was op
its so much better second time
but u do need imax 70mm
Haven't watched it again but I'm sure it is
i saw once in imax
and once in 70mm
u need both
imax has theatre shaking
70mm is amazing quality
huge diff
Yeah true, it was a lot
Still wondering to myself if I can do another rewatch lol
Imax laser
70mm time
I wanna try to do imax 70mm but the nearest one is far but hearing the rumors of damages is making me decide
how far
An hour and a half far

nah standard was fine
Yeah standard was not that bad
its op
standard really isn't that bad lol
this film would be great on all formats
like yea the experience would be better in 70mm but its that big of a difference in my eyes
Ngl I felt kinda disappointed that the Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombing wasn’t featured but I felt a bit it wasn’t necessary since this was more towards oppie, the man himself
I wish I saw it in IMAX but there's sadly no IMAX theaters near where I live. 😭
damn
when u see 70mm digital looks like trash 😭
eh its not that noticeable
Yes but a scene was shown where they were discussing targets to hit Japanese cities like the Secretary of defence literally said Kyoto wasn't gonna be bombed because he honeymooned there
the b&w did look a bit different on film versus digital
Sounds like an interesting campaign and protest.
STOP FORMAT SHAMING!!!!
Thank god for that mf, imma be going to Kyoto next spring lmao
i dont even watch movies in imax anymore shit is a scam
the difference is so little
depends if its real or not
My brother is 100% not going to like this film
imax is nice just because its a guarantee that the image and sound will be good
why
He’s seeing it tomorrow with his friends
i watched top gun mav in both imax and standard and the difference was like... nothing 😂 felt the same
He ain’t film nerds like us
i saw in standard twice
half the time i go to a standard theater and it'll be too quiet or the projector isn't properly calibrated
rip
and also i just like Big Screen
for 70mm oppenheimer they fucked up projector for universal thing
this has only happened to me once
and that was when i saw Nope
even if its just a smaller digital imax
like half the theaters in my town are like that where they have some screens that are bad
the theater i go to is pretty nice, so the screens and sounds are great
ironically day 1 70mm imax projector had power issues and died after 10 seconds lol
that was fun
at ur showing?
yes
the closest 70mm near me is in a whole different state lol
for spiderverse second time they played 20 mins of movie then went back to trailers and restarted movie
😂
damn
i wanna rewatch this movie in subtitles
But man I feel bad for Oppenheimer. He turned science into a weapon, He’s haunted by the blood he has on his hands and his theory of mankind destroy itself slowly came true with the Cold War, and the nightmares he had after the Manhattan project
sometimes its hard to understand wtf they're saying
i sort of disliked how sometimes the music overpowered the lines of dialouge
i loved music
RDJ in this film was amazing, i feel like his oscar is on lock
i was listening to soundtrack during run
ez pz
I loved the music too
Yeah he is amazing. Oppenheimer felt like a wake up call from being in the MCU for too long
matt damon was matt damon
Yeah lmao
Yeah RDJ was always a great actor but him doing over a decade of movies where he's playing a comedic type of character, people forgot.
this was rdj masterclass
Probably. We'll have to see how Leo does in KOFM
yea
that movie gonna slap
ong
leo so fat in it
😂
like wtf
cillian is like why couldnt i get fat role
😭
So hyped for this movie, planning to read the book
I'm also looking forward to Napoleon
the cast in kofm is insane
That as well
A film that kubrick wanted to do and Scott Ridley is fulfilling the vision
idk
KOFM got a bigger budget than Oppenheimer 😭
what is budget
200 million
.
damn
apple be rich
W
barbie 300m
Just fucking amazing
It’s so funny that WB clearly put Barbie up on July 21st out of pettiness at Nolan but it ended up helping both films anyway in the best possible way
Yeah even tho putting these films together was out for petty revenge. It gave a positive impact not only just both films, but for theaters as well
both are totally diff
Oppenheimer is already a classic. It might be Nolan's second best movie
best is interstellar
right?
noo
will always be his best in my eyes
heath ledger goated
i speak no hyperbole
i speak no bullshit
i speak no horseshit
i speak real shit
best nolan movie is interstellar
well that's just not nice at all ain't it
and nolan's actual best film is The Prestige
yea inception and prestige are better imo
nah
than interstellar
The Dark Knight is my favorite comic book movie. But I wouldn't call it my favorite Christopher Nolan movie.
I'm surprised that at the end of the movie it wasn't shown that in 2022 Department of Energy basically exonerated Oppenheimer and nullified the decision to strip his security clearance
I also know some people have said, stuff about taking the land away while building Los alamos wasn't mentioned or the fact about aftermath of Trinity test
Trinity Nuclear Test’s Fallout Reached 46 States, Canada and Mexico, Study Finds https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/20/science/trinity-nuclear-test-atomic-bomb-oppenheimer.html?smid=nytcore-android-share
This is quite a good article on various characters
Be Rami Malek
Make two non speaking appearances in early scenes of the movie
Show up towards the end and absolutely torpedo RDJ lol
yeah he was barely there and decides to fucking Destroy Strauss/RDJ
is this not the trinity test??
I was beginning to wonder if he had a bigger role that managed to be cut down to essentially non speaking or something but then he rolls in to give the people the hope spot that not every scheming dickhead gets away with it
That whole vendetta over him assuming Oppenheimer was talking shit about him to Einstein lol
yeah makes me assume that Strauss is a very sensitive person back then, with an ego
Also I can’t believe how one of the more stressful sequences in a film of this caliber was solely just about describing how terrifying a man Boris Pash is
insane to me that Josh from fucking Drake and Josh is the man who launched the first atom bomb in the trinity test
The testing of the bomb was by far the best scene in the movie in my opinion, really nerve-wracking even though you know it's going to work
I also loved how for a movie whose subject matter is so grounded in reality it blends reality and fantasy
Oppenheimer twitter is a hellscape
I actually enjoyed this film more than Barbie. It was intense.
I just found the Lewis Strauss stuff kinda confusing.
I was more compelled by Oppenheimer’s story about him developing the bomb and assembling the team of scientists to create it. That was thrilling.
I found the courtroom stuff kinda hard to follow.
Truman mocking him in the Oval Office made me feel awful for him despite how flawed he was.
Did you get the sense that we overacted here? I admire him for trying to step out of his comfort zone but I felt like he was trying too hard here.
He created it, him being the scapegoat for the japanese won't suffice Oppie
What do you mean scapegoat? Didn’t Truman say that he would take ownership and responsibility as President ?
yeah let the japanese blame truman instead of Oppenheimer, which Oppenheimer is depressed by his creation which wont work
Ah I see. Yeah, he did get a sense of regret. But if he didn’t do it, someone else would have, so he figured why not him?
His conversations with Einstein about how history would remember you was compelling.
How do you deal with the way history remembers you?
and I'm still thankful to that military official who didn't bomb Kyoto, gonna be visiting it next spring
yeah that ending was chilling
Yeah, war is just complex and harsh, I’m afraid.
Out of his comfortable zone? He’s played serious roles before lol. And what do you mean he was “trying too hard”
I think he overacted here. That’s what I meant.
I thought RDJ played the character very well, an Oscar worthy performance
I mean most, if not all biopics are overacted or has overacting. it kinda has to.
I am firmly against the weird anti-Rami sentiment that started because folk felt he shouldnt have won the Oscar
The guy is a great fucking actor, though there are certain types of character I wouldnt seek him out for
Collecting more and more of my thoughts. Oppenheimer is truly an amazing film
Up there one of Nolan’s best works
Changed my LB rating from a 4.5 to a 5
5 is the truly goated
that shithshow made people forget how good mr robot was
Im constantly always about to send folk a "don't make me tap the sign" meme with a link to his monologue in Season 4 episode 11 but pull back because of spoilers
but if anyone ever is like saying he's actually bad, that's all the proof I need to know he aint
Does this movie have uh
Explicit nudity?
I'm asking because here they censor everything Spider-Man got like an R rating for half that f word
There's nudity,for about a minute and a half
“You come here and absolutely ruin my bid for the Cabinet. And after I got you a role in Doolittle”
“It was critically panned and it flopped”
Funny
Don't pay attention, don't see the bullet
I feel we should be mentioning James Remar more
Not really a "Wow" appearance but like "Oh neat it's James Remar"
sex including a||book|| , sex on a||chair|| , sex in a ||courtroom||. There you go. And that's not even covering the nudity. If spider man got an R rating than idk about this movie
It's so unnecessary though lol
I think it was
The whole point of that scene was showing the psychological effects of a cheating husband.
I'm single so I don't see it
Wdym
Like what does that have to do with anything?
Oh
It's not that bad or long.
Yeah some people kept giggling like there were jokes in the movie or something
"So when is this place goin to open, Heimer?"
"Shut up, Little Boy."
My theater was silent throughout.
Nice
"We must thank the black man in the pajamas."
"His name is Phastos, Albert." https://t.co/eW6Eoo69aM
this movie did have a profound effect on me. Do you guys think this is a positive thing to introduce to the world as we are going have more interest in nuclear war and maybe have more conversations trying to stop it or will the dramatization of it cause more people to take internet in nuclear war and inspire others to dive deeper?
I think it is yes as the threat of nuclear war is still present and knowing how the bomb was made and used is important
All I know is by the end I was thinking
We are so fucked
All it takes is one madman
Conversation about nukes pretty much never stopped, especially with the ongoing conflict in Europe. A movie that goes out of its way to show how it ravaged the mind of its maker, ending with images of potential annihilation, can only be a deterrent.
Amazing
I don’t think so
The people that are deep into it already are
I agree
This will be something people think about for an hour every so often and move on
I don’t think a casual audience is gonna care much
My audience just got up and left at the end like it was nothing lol
Onto the next movie
Well they may discuss with families and friends though
Exactly
Some, maybe yeah
Nothing wider is going to change or be impacted really
The great thing is that the movie was a big success.. like how often do people go and watch a 3 hr long drama esp in this age of short attention span
Nolan
I watched everyone just get up and leave whilst I was at the end soaking everything in
I'm grateful that this movie exists like yes I knew about Oppenheimer a little but still got to know more and I personally now wanna read American prometheus
I really enjoyed this one
Barely
This was great
I was absolutely immersed and I’m glad I got to see a Nolan movie in the cinema
Same
For me it’s about experiences
Which is why I went to see this and Barbie next week
Gotta take your chances
In the theater rn for this
The acting was so great throughout
Should I get out of here before I get this spoiled
The facial expressions and blank stares on Cillain’s face
RDJ doing so well in a vindictive role
Even all the small moments and scenes from the stacked cast
Ya
Oh she was great as always
Those were so great and intense
I feel this so much. I am so afraid.
josh from drake and josh only got cast just to push the button
And a lot of people had expected 45 to 50 million dollars domestic opening for Oppenheimer but it is 80 million dollars which is the biggest for Nolan outside Batman trilogy
Both Florence Pugh and Emily did good imo
Pugh was kinda wasted a bit
Her role was very small anyway
That's true
She was mostly in the first act of the movie
How great were those bomb shakes in the cinema 😩
The cast was so stacked and so many important scientists were shown.. after watching the movie I was just looking at who was who and their contributions
Where you see Cillians visions
And everything goes white
Chilling
that aspect was shown beautifully
Man I wanna watch again 😭
Worth the extra money for IMAX
hiroshima bombing
The suspense is done so well.
it really nailed what exactly he was feeling
I do wish we got a bit more of those horrifying scenes
the editing was done so well
Would’ve been spine chilling
if anything the movie should atleast be nominated for the editing
What did you guys think of the musical score? I thought it was amazing
I loved the narrative structure too like this wasn't linear but done in a different way with those hearings
score for beautiful
I think that's part of the issue for Oppenheimer. He was working on a science project in the desert. Far away from the horror of his creation.
honestly the more i think about the movie the more i believe i didnt give it a fair score
of a 4/5
the story is something that sticks with you
Gotta look up the track that incorporated the Geiger counter rattle
True, although some more scenes of him being tested by his guilt and the morality of the situation would’ve added a more scary effect
you start to realize what oppie was thinking during those crucial moments. the moments that do not get explained outright
I have already listened to the whole score at least once and it is just wonderful
Cinematography was great as well
Yes
imagine trying to devise a nuclear bomb to take out the nazis because theyre robbing his people of their humanity, but as time passed by that goal could not be met. instead the US decided to use it in Japan which is already in a state of surrender
It is a bit of a different one if you think about it. It takes on solely Oppenheimers perspective with RDJ playing the antagonist role in the process and investigation
There are so many moral dilemmas entwined in this path that it's almost impossible to gain real clarity
Instead of showing other countries and the impact it had on them or Russia who were also in the race
It subverts expectations in a way
RDJ was true in saying that this is nolans magnum opus
Real
It’s different to what people are used to and I’m glad lots of people went
My cinema was empty at time of booking and when I went to see it, every seat was sold out
See this interesting graphic
the more i think about it
I’ve not seen Barbie yet
oppenheimer
You know the good thing about Barbenheimer is that it was never a vs
barbie was great and amazing dont get me wrong
It’s a celebration of both movies
Plus it’s kinda difficult to compare the two
yeah
My screening had some people clearly dressed for Barbie. Younger people too. I wonder what they ended up thinking about this.
i enjoyed both
True
Based movie enjoyer
I’m more referring to public opinion, when a movie of this scale and reach talks about something this political, it does have a wave on society, it will be felt in a decade
I watched on 35mm 💀
i watched in regular cinema lol
Same, although I think it’s 35mm not sure what the exact ratio is for that usually
how was it in 70mm
It was absolutely gorgeous
fucking awesome
i think sound would be better in IMAX but im not sure. cuz regular theater i went to had muddled sound at points
The last movie I watched on film was licorche pizza and that scan was popping like crazy
Actually mine might’ve been 70mm but I’m not sure coz the image wasn’t too square as shown here
You are not alone :)
The mix is just muddled in places throughout
darn nolan thinking everybody would be seated at the front
My girlfriend saw it in imax and we both said it was hard to hear sometimes
just sit at the front as nolan intends
I think that classic Nolan sound mixing lol
The music does overtake the dialogue at points
i know i noticed that too
Once again need subtitles
I think it happened a lot with Tenet but it was much worse
Or maybe he can just flatten the dialogue audio a bit
They should make subtitles mandatory especially if there’s idiots talking in the cinema
I might do too
It might have been too basey at some points
Somethin' wrong with screen 7 then
nolan all about that bass
Oppie got into a lot of treble
I am very used to subtitles so when a film's mixing is to the point of me not hearing most of it, I just need them brr
With a dialogue heavy film like this it's even more important
With Dunkirk for instance you barely even need dialogue at all
Even so my ADHD was going brr in multiple places, very glad I've got other people to tell people like us what happened.
i didnt have anyone we were all confused lol
My theater seemed to be full of teenagers that didn’t realize it would be a dialogue-driven 3 hour biopic and just saw that it was the director of the dark knight so people kept going on their phones/sighing really loudly/leaving the theater as a group
Unlucky
But everyone I went with didn’t move at all until the film ended
Was absolutely wild

NOLAN DOES IT AGAIN LADS!!! WOOHOO!!
when barbie makes double
Well that’s because it’s Barbie
Barbie makes double because it's a more accessible movie?
Like it's just a dumb thing to say lmao ofc Barbie's gonna make more
Exactly
Such an amazing movie
Nolan’s best in years recent years, top 3 atm but we’ll see on rewatch
Well yeah nobody is expecting it to come close to barbie but they’re both hits
Yeah those raindrops appear again at the end at Einstein’s conversation
Ripple effect
Chain reaction
🔥
Me and my co-worker went see this movie last night (we both work with nuke), we just quietly say to each other. See you at work on monday
Lol
Yeah because of how the world will destroy itself with the weapons oppie has given to the world
Yeah this movie deserves a rewatch
So insane that this movie made $175 million. Going beyond the budget
to me its really interesting how nolan went from tenet which was incredibly concept/plot driven film and no focus on character at all to this which is so so much about the character and his psyche
and i liked this way more maybe cos i didnt fully ever end up getting tenet
Yeah, tenet was intentionally not about character because it was completely about how covert operatives are not able to have characters at all
Pretty cool contrast to this
Yes
Why?
Truman had no regrets or second thoughts
He thought he was weak for being emotionally affected by the bombing
And was maybe just a dick in general
I mean Truman has blood on his hand more than Oppenheimer did, obviously because he ordered the bomb to be dropped.
But he didn’t care
Truman was the one who made the decision to use the bomb. He just got annoyed with Oppenheimer for being "over-dramatic" with his role
I mean it kinda depicts Truman as heartless in some way. But I think strong leaders have to be strong I suppose.
From his POV. Don't throw rock at me
He wasn't totally wrong about Oppenheimer wanting to have it both ways
Ah that makes sense. Oppenheimer has sort of a weird ego I suppose.
It’s a real thing Truman said it’s not a depiction either
In the book, they did said Oppenheimer tends to be overdramatic and ego driven
Yeah, I just looked it up. Whoa, he just told it like he is. US Presidents back then had real balls. Lol.
Tenet checks more Nolan boxes
Personally, Tenet is the most Nolan-ny film I’ve ever seen
I still like Tenet more than this but both great
and oppenheimer the least?
Dunkirk is probably the least
The movie didn't show enough how asshole Edward teller was lol
I got bored with Dunkirk tbh. But tenet was the first movie that I walked out of a theater
dunkirk is another idk what i think about it
i was particularly surprised by the sex in this one
Tenet is a decent movie to watch at home. Can't hear shit in a theater though
Same, but I was like 13 when I watched it during theaters. Prolly gonna do a rewatch
I think Dunkirk is the leanest, meanest version of Nolan. Almost entirely visual storytelling and big set pieces
Still deciding that on myself, prolly gonna do a rewatch when I have the time
Hopefully I can rewatch it on imax 70mm
I truly like oppenheimer but not sure if I would be willing to watch it again. It's a 3h movie lol
What ever happened to the livestream timer?
Forgot to check that in
It played a featurette when it ended
Ah ok
Didn’t miss out on anything
Why do people insist on being insufferable in the theatre https://twitter.com/PeachyKneeSocks/status/1682740094506082307
Bro 😭
do you even watch the movie like this
I can’t imagine anyone would, they’re too self absorbed
Feel bad for the people who had to be really up front
Omw to the theater again
Just got back from watching this
Waking up after being drugged only to find yourself sitting, staring up at a giant chinned Cillian Murphy
did anyone else think that Oppie’s speech was in German and not Dutch?
deutsch is german
Can’t imagine the neck pain lol
We know now who killed JF Kennedy
Hurts looking at that pic
Uh oh, political argument going on in regular movies chat
Going for third time tmr
😂
Wasn’t India more hyped about Oppenheimer than Barbie?
yes but they say "dutch" not "doych" in the movie
Grace Randolph whining about why the film didn’t show the actual Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Did the film need to show those bombings to make an impact?
It can sound like that
But he was saying Deutsch
Oppenheimer Review : Its a 'Pop'penheimer!
Movie going 'creme-de-la-creme' like me after a point can sense if we are watching a masterpiece or gibberish in the disguise of a masterpiece. It’s been 25 years that Nolan has been making movies , about time he learned how to compose a scene or evoke basic emotions from the audience. Some might say its a Biopic, doesn't have to evoke any emotions, then what was La Vie en Rose/ The Pianist/ A Beautiful Mind/ The Aviator? This movie is as superficial as it gets , it’s like watching Terrence Mallick without the beauty, watching Paul Thomas Anderson without the scope of imagery or watching Kubrick without the impact. Major portion of the movie just looked like the movie needs some Adderall for its ADHD tone. Editing is just so bad, looked so much like I was watching a Michael Bay movie. Though the movie is set in 1940s, actors body language, style of delivery & slang is so modern in nature.
Movie does have some merits like some great performances by Matt Damon & the guy that played 'Albert Einstein'. It has some great cinematography & becomes more serious during the third act.
Dialogue driven movies are enjoyable if they have a style to them like most Aaron Sorkin movies 'The Social Network' or Moneyball . Oppenheimer is dialogue heavy but lacks any style or impact. Another issue is one-dimensional depiction of all the Physicists, like all Physicists are just shallow snobs. Cillian Murphy though looks like Oppenheimer, just hams through the lines through major portion of the movie. Emily Blunt is so miscast in this movie, its not 'A Quiet Place Emily!'. Robert Downey Jr. was good. Its definitely going to win most major Oscars like Best Picture, Best Director & Best Supporting Actor just because of the theme of the movie & Nolan not having one so far.
Oppenheimer is more like 'Pop'penheimer, fizz runs out midway, all you are left with is some corn syrup.
Rating : 2/5
They clearly say dutch
Yes it was in german
he has given a speech before in Dutch though 😁
why does one of the characters call it “dutch” when referring to it then?
can’t remember his name
Izzy
Not sure thought it was weird
the guy who declines when offered to work in the manhattan project
Yeah his name is izzy something
isidor rabi
Maybe it was plain stupidity, deutsh and dutch pretty similar
Yes
yeah but it would be a weird detail to include if intentional
and i doubt it wasn’t intentional
also they were speaking in english, why not just say the word “german”
idfk
Why doesn't Nolan make his dialogue audible? Mysteries abound
So we can hear Ludwigs banging score
the rest of the sound design was fucking amazing too
Ludwig so goated
The last time I remember having this problem was with Tenet
It's literally just Nolan
when kitty said “take care” to oppie before the trinity trial i couldn’t hear it properly at first
Well this was a big fucking movie
Oppenheimer was opulent
Lmao @analog jasper
This mfer was one of my favorite castings in the movie.
Wish we could get more DeHaan.
Seems he's starting to recover from TASM 2
ahaha
Would that it were so simple
Haha Hail Caesar! reference.
I found Hail Caesar disappointing tbh
We had a lot of big names and familiar faces in this movie
And everyone ATE
He was such a jackass on that set
yeah?
I'm fortunate enough to live a ~25 minute drive from one of the...fifteen or so 15/70 IMAX engagements of Oppenheimer in the world. I have a few questions.
-
Is Oppenheimer a film you really should see with friends, or is it okay to watch it alone? It's like eating out for dinner, you know? It's better when you're with friends or loved ones.
-
The nuke scene is on YT. Should I go into this film completely blind to not spoil the surprise? I have ADHD and can be hypersensitive to sound, so my reasoning is if I watch the nuke scene on YT first, the sensory assault won't overwhelm me. Or should I only come into the film having watched the trailer and/or read spoiler-free reviews?
3a. I've been looking at matinee 70mm showings but only the front row seats aren't sold out. Not worth it? Should I keep looking for tickets further back?
3b. Cineplex only lets you buy tickets up to a week in advance. When do new tickets drop? Midnight EDT?
- Besides IMAX 70mm, there are various formats in which to see Oppenheimer. UltraAVX (Metrotown, Scotiabank, Marine Gateway, Coquitlam, Park Royal + Recliner), VIP (Brentwood and Park Royal with recliner, Coquitlam and Marine Gateway without), LieMAX (Riverport, Saturdays only), 70mm non-IMAX (Park Theatre on Cambie). How do they all compare?
Thank you.
- Either is fine
- Its not what you think I dont know how to explain this to you without spoiling but you should be fine. The buildup to Trinity is very tense. If you are worried I would just watch it.
- Look for further back, front row in IMAX is not good. I cant speak for the rest of ur questions
How does the buildup being tense relate to being able to watch Trinity beforehand and not get spoiled? I'm a bit confused.
It’s not a sensory assault
Don’t watch on YouTube
You should be fine
There are other scenes that are louder and more jarring in general
Im just mentioning it because of your sensory stuff. If you want you could bring ear muffs or something and put them on during loud scenes
Alright, I'll go in blind. But watching the trailer won't spoil anything important, right?
Also it’s ok to see it by yourself. It’s not a funny movie so it’s not like you’ll be laughing with others or anything. It’s a mostly solitary experience
That's a good idea. Thanks.
nope
Is Barbie the same?
No it won’t. This trailer is great and doesn’t spoil anything
Oppenheimer - In Theaters 7 21 23
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologi...
No Barbie is something you’ll definitely wanna see with friends
If you have to see it alone it’ll still be fun but I’d prefer going with others
If you’re able to see it 70mm imax that’s definitely the best way to see it but if not it’s ok. I wouldn’t sit close to the screen
Friends...I need to find some of those
How close is too close? For the Friday 2pm show only the first four rows are available. I think Cineplex drops new tickets on Wednesdays but I don't know at what time.
I’m convinced ‘film fans’ would literally rather do anything other than actually watch a film
from what I see row f-j would be better, just wait till wednesday
If you could choose anywhere I would say here. I’m not sure if it would be too close unfortunately
If it’s on the side and in the fourth row it might be too close cause it’s not in the middle
You’ll have a weird curve
Thanks for the protips @simple violet, much appreciated
is this your screen?
Np
Oh, another Canadian in the audience?
Was I correct that ticket drops are on Wednesdays?
Im not sure when ticket drops are. You should have enough time to snag a good seat
Sure thing, thanks again man
of course have fun

Kenneth Branagh the new Michael Caine
Dunkirk was fantastic
Vancouver bros 🤝
No.
Langley has been weird, they dropped all their tickets on Friday morning.
I live near SFU/Lake City area
Oh for the love of God, why do they have to be so idiosyncratic?
if you can watch it with someone, that's nice, because there's a lot of dicsussion to be had after the movie
its okay if you watch it alone too, because you can discuss with us here!
We were at a 1030am showing of Oppenheimer and after he said "Now I am become Death" for the first time someone very audibly cracked a beer open
Cinema is SO back

to the people who watched it in a 70mm IMAX theatre, was it any different from any other IMAX screening? if so, how?
saw it in IMAX laser and 70mm IMAX. For 70mm you can see the grain, small black marks, some artifacting aswell (which is not a bad thing it added to the experience). 70mm Imax was full frame for me which was far better.
this, there were moments where that occurred but it honestly added to the experience
too much booby not enough boomy
See imax 70mm
What do the stomping noises that are in the trailer represent? Obviously the source of the sound is revealed in the movie but whats the subtext of it?
Trying to find someone who's willing to come out with me to Langley and watch a 3 hour film would be...a hard sell.
Especially since I don't drive so I'm targeting a weekday afternoon screening.
It’s a scary noise made even scarier because it’s people cheering for the atomic bomb
Basically what makes it actually scary is that it’s real and it’s people celebrating so it can go either way
- It’s scary because it’s people cheering for what is effectively the beginning of the end
- It’s like the bomb in a way, you can just disregard it as something from a movie but then you remember it’s real, it’s a real man made thing
Second one is a bit of a stretch but it could apply
1st one is pretty much right
I am fascinated by Kitty Oppenheimer.
She's clearly a flawed character.
She hates being a mother.
She hate Oppenheimer for cheating on her.
Yet she sees how brilliant Oppenheimer is and sticks by him realizing how important he is.
I don't know what that saids about women during that time.
I would have thought she'd left him.
As kitty is bad as a parent, I believe that Oppie is bad as well tbh
Yeah, that was insane for Oppie to just have his friends take care of the baby.
“Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. For this, he was chained to a rock and tortured for eternity.”
But then again, Kitty was not in a good state and Oppie had work.
Brilliant innovative people consumed with their work don't really make good parents.
Indeed. Haunting quote.
Nolan genius to make a connection with Prometheus
YES THATS WHAT I SAW
I WANNA SEE SOME TITTIES MAN
omg
A humble request
it's fucking
rated PG-13 here
like why dude
That looks like dogshit lol
Lmao
Wait so when Matt Damon goes “this is the most important fucking thing to happen in the history of the world” the fuck was censored?
Oh ok that’s wild
There’s multiple fucks in the movie usually pg-13 allows only one
Silly place to live
no the swear words are intact
The ratings here don't make sense
they usually just left out the sex but everything else is ok (even extreme violencE)
Goober ass country ngl I’m sorry you have to live there
I'm sorry for myself as well
Well the book he was adapting is called American Prometheus.
lol
Oh yeah makes sense
why’d Nolan change the dialogue so much
“I felt sorry for them”
“But you knew it would kill them beforehand?”
“Yes”
“So you’re a hypocrite?”
“Nuh uh”
"don't let that pussy back in here" was a crazy line
america was somethin else in the 1940s
I kinda expected him even tho I didn't know he was in the movie lol
It's like with Wes Anderson you expect certain people but you don't know where they will show up
Asteroid City was something else
It had several points it wanted to make and made them poorly
I don't have the biggest expectations like I did with The French Dispatch
But TFD did deliver for me
The point just being “you’re not supposed to get it” was just dumb
Like if you wanna do something deep and thoughtful, don’t pull a “oh there is no point!!!” Thing
It’s just lazy
Kitty oppenheimer was 1 of the main factor for Oppies's downfall.
Building a nuke is very very hard. For most engineers and scientists, we all get excited to see all the hard work pay off in a successful demonstration
Yeah but in this context it’s effectively the beginning of the end and what’s worse is that it’s not the people who made it but the general public
That final monologue
“I think we did it”
and the crowd goes wild
yeah, I feel like those stomps from that rally of the successful trinity test was the beginning of the end and him imagining the nuke bombing at the ceremony was disturbing him greatly
Yeah. Because he knows it’ll happen someday
Like someday it’s not just gonna be something In the paper someday it’ll be him experiencing his own creation
one of the other details I really liked is the ripple effect/chain effect happening at the end, just like the beginning
signifying the chain reaction he predicted
I didn’t pick up on that at first but yeah it’s great
I don’t think this movie was in his favour and in my opinion rightfully so
He was a hypocrite
He has basically doomed us
And he knew everything that would happen
There is no real “good guy” in this
It more complicated than that
Besides maybe aldens character
I saw a lot of themes of betrayal in the film
Yeah that’s true but I don’t think the movie is calling him a good person by any means
No, he litterally tried to kill the professor
Oppenheimer had some dark personality. The book makes it very clear
There are 3 books I would highly suggest reading to have a better understanding
American prometheous
Restricted data
The Evolution of nuclear strategy.
They probably would give everyone some really good context
how I saw the theme of betrayal is how Oppenheimer betrayed science and turned it into a weapon, Oppenheimer betraying his women, Cook betraying Oppie and giving the way to make the bomb to the russians, the country betraying oppie for his achievements of the nuke, and Oppenheimer betraying life itself
He’s a very, very complicated man but I think at his core he’s just a bad person. He seems to often do something on a pure whim no matter who it harms but then tries to regret it. And I don’t think he actually did really regret anything, to me he was trying to make himself feel better
He knows what he did was wrong
But he can’t feel sorry for it
So he tried to
But he can’t
That’s my takeaway at least
i got mad
He definitely didn't regret building nuke. It was nessecary at the beginning of the program.
Yeah, I think as time went on he realised it would do more harm than good but again, to me he doesn’t seem to care. He tried to kill the professor on a whim and only tried to stop it when at the last second. With the bomb he realised his mistake too late
I'm gonna look it up
Yeah. The asteroid city stuff was whatever but it was far more better than whatever preachy horseshit was going on with the play
It was probably more boring than u think lol
Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie is a 1995 American documentary film directed by Peter Kuran and narrated by William Shatner.
Free on Youtube
watch bombs go off
You just cannot write a movie that is constantly interrupted with random segments that make no sense and expect me to be fine with it
ok jeez im not Wes
lol
but yea im with you
Well I replied to myself (which means I’m arguing with myself which is worse butttt)
therein lies the genius
Wes Anderson is lucky that little song about the alien was an absolute banger because if not I’d never let that guy make a movie again
IMO one of the most overrated directors ever
Now
I love him
But still
He just seems to go downhill every time (not counting grand Budapest)
French dispatch was good
Isle of Dogs was good
But like
It all just feels a bit much
recently watch fantastic fox for the first time, darling little movie
He’s not taking enough time IMO
yeah because he originally wanted to use the bomb on the nazis but instead its used on the japanese and his regret starts to begin
too many actors means tight schedules for filming
he was a hypocrite
But like they don’t all have to be big names
If he just cast nobodies who fit the role it would be so much better
yeah, such a complicated man
he needs to bring it down a notch, back to his roots
To be fair, I know people who works on nuke and despite the usage or the weapon itself.
For a lot of people, just a job
I don’t think I could do it personally
I feel like nukes are just pure overkill
got obsessed, let his morals get corrupted and then when he created the ultimate weapon, he lost all control and it got used in the 1. what it was made for 2. the most unimaginable way possible. I put those in that order on purpose because at the end of the day
That's perfectly fine
Oppenheimer is agreed upon to be a very very morally complicated character
i just dont think its that complicated
I mean people are complicated by nature
he wanted to be the best AND had to be the best
It's not black and white
thinking more and more of it, when the Los Alamos team were discussing about the bomb when Germany lost hitler, Oppie still encourage the bomb to be still built
strauss saw it in black and white
He realises his mistakes too late. It’s shown at the start with the Apple and him not being there for Jean
When you work hard on it, it will be hard to just give up lol
a man full of regrets
In Oppenheimer, the color sequences represent the subjective point of view while black & white sequences represent the objective POV. im sure someone posted this aalready
the color essentially from oppies view and b/w from strauss view
The book did point that out with his attempt to wear military uniform, to start wearing the hat and to say the "I'm destroyer of the world"
someone had to be the first threat of the world, turned out to be the U.S.
yupperooni
and gave birth to the cold war
I watched this again and enjoyed it more as a political drama
luckily my parents aren't born in the US and didn't have to face those concerns
Not sure how you miss the nazi and Japan but ok
He's fueled by ego, power and obsession
which no one won, now everyone just has bombs, one touch away from lighting the sky on fire
He never thought about anything. He never cared about the consequences of what happened to others but it’s only in the moments before something of his creation happens he considers the consequences that would happen to HIM. That’s why he was full of regrets, it’s because it damaged his ego. It’s not because he killed innocents, no matter how much he wants himself to think that’s why it’s because it damaged him and him alone
I found the sequence where he poisons the apple and the trinity test looks like the apple pretty interesting, there's something definitely dark within him
his prof was a dick in his eyes
it seemed like Oppie had mental health problems during his time in europe with his homesickness and all
anyone who would stifle him is in his way
but then his moral compassed flipped and he got to the apple before something bad happened
that flash back he had of cold sweats
I'm wondering if he felt the same about the bomb?
the govt is the teacher, and the bomb is the apple, he has lost control
he always loses the control he thinks he had
And I am become death, destroyer of worlds.
he was supposed to get the medal from kennedy
He’s a regretful man, he tries to convince himself it’s because of the people who suffered but really it’s only because every poor choice he made led to him suffering
guess who got assassinated a week before the ceremony
LBJ made it a point to get him that medal on Oppie after Kennedy
1 of the scariest moment in soviet history was probably the day after jfk assassination
the right orange
Hmmm
Idk
Maybe
Honestly idk if I’d wanna watch in 70MM lol
All I’ve heard is it constantly having problems
And I’d imagine it’s because they had to quickly add an extension to every single one for the film reel
i watched in 70MM not imax
what about this position?
it was the music box chicago
