It's easy to prove that it doesn't have to be a square if you start by drawing an X where the bottom legs are longer than the top legs, then use the 4 ends as vertices of the trapezoid.

how would i solve this question i kind of just assumed it'll be a square and guessed the answer was 64

Depending on the context of the question, you might be able to assume it's a square. If the question states that this has a constant answer, and a square is possible, then the square will have the same answer.
