The tangent theta is equal to opposite/adjacent…the 5x is the opposite side and the 14x is the adjacent side…so why does it need to be flipped?

The names adjacent and opposite are relative to the angle you're using, adjacent will be the side that touches both the angle theta and the square angle, in this case its the 5x one, and opposite is the side that does not touch the angle theta, in that case, the 14x, so you just got it the other way around
