A function means that there is absolutely no question whatsoever about what a particular independent variable gets matched up with. x is the independent variable. If x = -1, what one and only unique y value matches with it?

Imagine if you were a delivery driver and you had to deliver a package to "123 Oak street". Now, what if there were two houses with the number "123" on Oak Street? Would that be a mess?

#

Yeah, you'd have no idea where to deliver the package to. Do you leave it at one house, or the other house? The question is utterly impossible to answer. It's not a well-defined question. You go back to your boss and say "I can't do this, it's impossible, give me something possible."

Here, what is f(-1)?

#

I don't want to just give you an answer, unless you make some effort first.

#

Are you asking if I can help you do a test that a teacher is giving you to give you a grade that will help determine if you pass a course?

#

People here will help you learn any questions you have.

#

In any reputable school, this would be an academic offense. I'm sorry, but I am unable to help you with a test that is supposed to test your ability to do something without a person helping you.

#

People will gladly help you study for a test. This is encouraged. We just can't help you do the test.

#

I used to be a TA.

#

We can help you pass by helping you prepare for the test.
