If you can make a right triangle, you can then use Pythagorean Theorem.
Expanding on what michael said, how would you make this triangle into a right angled triangle?
think of it this way, the closest Emma's house could possibly be to Claudia's house would be if angle CDE was 0 degrees (that is to say they were in a straight line with Claudia's house on the left, Emma's house in the middle, and Dane's house on the right) and the farthest possible distance would be if angle CDE was 180 degrees (a straight line with Emma's house on the left Dane's house in the middle and Claudia's house on the right).
so given that what is the closest possible distance from Claudia's house to Emma's and what is the furthest
