I get you man, let’s call the bottom side of the first triangle x and the bottom side of the second triangle y

We don’t know the exact values of x and y but we know that x+y = 40

#

The areas of the top triangles is (1/2)(6x) + (1/2)(6y) = 3x + 3y

We can factor that into 3(x + y)

So even though we still don’t know what x is and we still don’t know what y is we know that x + y = 40 and can still get the area

You don't even need pythagorean theorem for this, right? Since the top 2 triangles are really just the negative of one triangle, and any triangle is really just half a rectangle

So it's just 40*(30-6)+(40*6)/2=1080

Which looking at it now is a shorter equation of 40*30-6*40/2=1080 as well...

What you can do is you can draw the top segment to complete the full rectangle

First find the area of the full rectangle

#

Then find the area of the triangle formed after drawing the top segment of the full rectangle

#

And subtract the area of that triangle from the area of the rectangle

#

They anyways give you the base and the height of the triangle just try to find it
