definitely use substitution
but you can also factor out 500 from both sides to make the problem look a bit simpler
x = 1 + i/4
12 = 5x^40
from there try to get identities for powers of x and use substitution for the higher powers
so x^2 = 1 + i/2 - 1/16 = 15/16 + i/2
and then the problem is 12 = 5(x^2)^20
