Ok, to start with the scale problems, I think it's better for you to learn what exactly they're asking.
Essentially, you have an actual size of an object and a portrayed size, this portrayed size being the size of a model or drawing of the original object. So, you have to find what fraction of the original size is this portrayed size.
For example:
If you have an object with a length of 35in.
and a drawing of the object shows it with a length of 5in.
To find the scale you make a fraction with the portrayed size in the numerator and actual size in the denominator and then simplify it.
In this case you would have:
5 / 35 -> 1 / 7
This fraction can then be written as their ratio form as:
1 in. : 7 in.
Next it seems they have you converting your units based on a scale.
So, for another example,
if you have a drawing 4 in. long
and the scale is 1 in. : 5 in.
You can turn the scale into a fraction: 1 / 5
This just tells you that your 4 in. drawing is one fifth the original size, meaning you should multiply by 5 to find your answer. (in reality you're just dividing by the fraction)
So you have: 4 in. * 5 = 20 in.
