The first step in (1) should be looking at the first few a_n and trying to find out how the sequence develops (e.g. the left part of the sequence starts at … and tends towards … and the right part of the sequence starts at … and tends towards …).
For (2), as you need to proove an explicit formula, given the recursive formula, Proof by Induction probably would be the best approach
