Maybe you can assume 8 places where you place 2 unique objects, so for the first 7 places you have 2 options and the last one you dont have a choice, so I feel the answer would be 2^7

There is no actual formula, I think

You just find the number of possibilities in each slot, and multiply them to get your answer, i.e. number of ways you can 'fill' the slots
