look into the what the application process is, look into the finances whether it's affordable or you'll have to take out loans/get scholarship, see if you require english proficiency tests (like ielts, toeffl, some univerisities accept the duolingo english test now), and try to get recommendation letters from your teachers and get your extracurriculars in order, also write your college application essays well if you're given the chance to do that

In a time where we have all the knowledge at our fingertips because of LLMs and the internet. I wonder how useful it is. I started a job as process engineer recently and I will get to work on 'cool stuff' like implementing AI in the company. I hope it requires math knowledge but I'm worried it'll just be using frameworks or plugging and chugging with chatgpt.

I would look at the standard UG curriculum for math majors at the uni you want to go to. Usually, there are a few mandatory courses and afterwards you can choose. I'd just cover the material from those mandatory courses

In Germany, that is real analysis 1, 2 and linear algebra 1, 2 (and a "mathematical programming" course)

There is MIT OCW, a website that uploads recordings of some of the MIT lectures. Gilbert Strang's course on linear algebra (you can find it just by googling) is on it and very classic, I read some people say good things about it

As a textbook on LA, there is linear algebra done right by Sheldon Axler (freely available online), but lots of other ones too that are good (Friedberg, Insel, Spencer is popular, some also use linear algebra done wrong (the title comes from the former doing determinants at the end and this one doing them at the beginning))

To get into real analysis, you will probably want to have covered some calculus beforehand, just to have the intuition that you want to formalize

Oh, and for proof-writing, there are some thick 400 page books out there but I would just read the note by Loch that he posted here a while ago, #proofs-and-logic message, it's 27 pages or so (and basically corresponds to how we do it in Germany too; there is no dedicated course on proof-writing, you do it at the beginning of these mandatory courses I mentioned and just assimilate it) and then just actually start LA or RA

Well, then you will probably want to continue with the subjects that build on calculus and real analysis.

Maybe topology, maybe measure theory/probability, maybe differential geometry

Functional analysis is a beautiful area, but requires a reasonably good grasp of topology, real analysis and linear algebra

either from a book or just something the professors prepared

its a great source as long as you can sit on your own and crunch through it

tbh i cant say much about it, given, here in my country (argentina) any theoretical major is just a facade to ending up in the education system

My abstract algebra teacher this semester has been absolutely incredible, she's helped me understand the subject incredibly well without using any reference materials other than the classes themselves, but for example, can't say the same about my analysis teacher

Applied research is, of course, much better paid than theoretical one
