pulsar pagoda
#

the main issue at intel is that their too spoiled

jagged forge
#

well they seem to be the opposite of that rn

peak tide
#

i dunno about that, they aren't actually compensated all that well

jagged forge
#

people getting axed left and right

pulsar pagoda
#

not really

#

the only people at intel who are worth it

jagged forge
#

scrambling to restructure the business

pulsar pagoda
#

are the internal affairs department

#

they are the firefighters of intel

#

the only ones kept for long periods of time

#

that is the case at least in costa rica

#

ive heard shit about incompetence that would blow ur mind

#

So there is this guy, lets call him santi

#

once in a project I spoke too much and made it so santi had to implement night mode for an app (the feature was not planned)

#

the guy learned android, react native and chinese (enough to interact with the device for the mvp)

#

in 1 week

#

even though I did that

#

he didnt get mad

#

but this guy

#

santi

#

He got out of intel cause he called his supervisor a fucking (r word here), who doesnt have a brain.

#

Santi told his supervisor that he didnt knew how he got to work at all cause he doubted he could even drive his car

#

thats how bad it was

#

like A guy thats full chill

#

gets to that

peak tide
#

haha, worst i ever called my manager (to his face) was "wrongheaded"
and he brought that up nearly every week thereafter

#

he still bought booze for me though so he was a good egg

pulsar pagoda
#

oh btw santi is working for a company called avionix now

#

and they pay shit

#

also kind of a sweat shop

#

he prefers that

#

than intel

jagged forge
#

my coworker quit and emailed the whole company saying the ceo was two-faced and listed bullet points supporting his case

pulsar pagoda

that name sounds familiar, avionix

peak tide

i've mostly been more diplomatic than people deserved

my other coworker quit after he got put on a pip and was going to stay for 1 more week
then he got on a call and started talking about it and trash talking his manager and then they escorted him out

jagged forge
#

i hope this project is worth it because it's been so much effort and pain the last 2 years 💀

#

if it helps me become a staff engineer some day it will be worth it

peak tide
#

my best promotions have been either when i changed jobs or when i did some absolutely horrible herculean high profile task

#

highly recommend the changing jobs option

pulsar pagoda
#

not gonna lie

#

this fits a lot of what I want to do

jagged forge
#

yea there's not really anywhere for me to go higher at my current company unless we suddenly grow really fast

jagged forge

a recruiter might send your resume to your boss

peak tide
pulsar pagoda

peak tide
#

btw just thought i'd mention that i'm still coughing my lungs out 9 fucking days into this little covid episode

jagged forge
#

currently i'm the only person who understands a critical part of the codebase on my project

peak tide
#

not recommended

jagged forge
#

so it would suck if i up and left

pulsar pagoda
#

they would probably offer u a raise If u bringed leaving

jagged forge
#

idk

peak tide
#

if they ignore that standard wisdom, that's not your problem

jagged forge
#

yeah

#

i've suggested open sourcing the part of our codebase, which would be better in that respect, and my boss was open to it, but it's obviously not a priority

peak tide
#

that said, when i give notice i generally offer to do a few code walkthrough sessions of critical stuff where i was the one who knew the most about it

#

which works out fairly well

jagged forge
#

yeah

#

i've been working on database stuff for 2 years and while it's very cool and technical idk if i want to do it anymore

#

building a database is hard monkey

peak tide
#

yea nothing wrong with that, expand your horizons

jagged forge
#

whatever i do i'd like it to involve more math

pulsar pagoda
#

well isnt db building a lot of finite model theory?

jagged forge
#

yea i mean there's math, relational algebra etc

#

idk if it's my flavor of math

pulsar pagoda
#

u want analysis

#

not algebra I guess

jagged forge
#

probability and statistics yeah

#

so yeah, math, except it has to be something useful and applicable at scale, otherwise there's limited career trajectory there

#

so nothing super obscure i guess

pulsar pagoda
#

operations research

peak tide
#

there's a fairly wide variety of roles where at least some statistics can be involved

jagged forge
#

yeah

peak tide
#

seems like there's always a need for some degree of data visualization and quantifying performance in various ways

jagged forge
#

i do like data a lot

peak tide
#

my last job had a fair amount of estimation theory, some kalman filtering, hidden markov models, bunch of linear algebra for various purposes

that sounds cool

@neat lintel are you here

First, you need to understand what a rational number is A rational number is any number that can be written as a ratio of two integers like 4 =8/2

π, √2 and e are some non rational numbers which cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers

A rational expression is a quotient or ratio of two polynomials. Example:
(2x + 1)/4x is a rational expression

A rational equation is an equation that involves rational expressions. For example the equation (2x + 4)/7y = 4 is a rational equation

#

@neat lintel do you have any doubt?

neat lintel
#

1.) 6/x + 3/x² = 9/x

2.) 3/x+1 - x/x-1 = -11/x² - 1

Can you help me get the LCD if it's okay? @neat lintel

Like, I'm not dissing the IMO. It's good. It's impressive to solve some of those problems.

But it's not the only path to math.

Right now the kid is not ready to be considering it.

hardy iron
neat lintel
#

lol, why people on mathcord thinks Olympiad math is just tricky problems, yeah, some problems are tricky, but for understanding math you need a huge amount of examples you find in math olympiad
for example, number theory math olympiad gives you preparation for abstract algebra

hardy iron
#

You can't just say that without an example

hardy iron

another relevant comp math topic is Cauchy Schwartz which can be generalized to vector forms with norms

hardy iron

that's the difference , but Math olympiad along side "Real math" is good

twin turtle
#

Good morning folks. A beginner to mathematics here, I share a common parable, didn't do maths in high school and eventually quit it completely to pursue software development, but recently re-discovered how important math is to really understand the algorithms and be able to even share the same table with smarter folks.

So I've developed a "curriculum" for myself -- I'll dedicate 1-2 hours daily outside of my main work to studying maths from the ground up.

  1. Re-learn and develop the mathematical base from the ground up
  2. Practice my weakest and possibily the most important parts of maths for me -- Linear Algebra
    • I'll find out a good workbook with solved questions and work my way through that

After this point it is really ambiguous on how I should proceed, since my goal with maths is to understand the papers and algorithms deeper, and be able to rationally make sense of them (eg what does the quadratic formula REALLY mean?)

I appreciate ANY advice from y'all, it really helps to get some input for folks smarter and further along this journey than myself.

#

@limber thunder

I see, that makes sense actually -- like with all languages you get more fluent at them with practice, e.g. solving math problems or talking about math to other people, like when you explain a proof

Yeah, exactly. So many fields of maths are really fascinating to me, but I can't get through the "gate" of understanding the obscure greek symbols

limber thunder
twin turtle
limber thunder
#

when I've taught e.g. uni freshmen or HS kids I try to be as verbose as possible, so for instance you could read the formulae out loud

twin turtle
limber thunder
#

but in the case of stuff like quadratic functions the "meaning" isn't just in the words, but in geometrical properties of these functions

twin turtle
twin turtle
limber thunder
#

and a recurring theme in maths is that you can think of certain objects in many different ways, for instance if you want to picture the zeros/roots of some quadratic function you can think of that problem 1) symbolically/algebraically, by deducing some formula that the roots should verify, 2) geometrically, by knowing that the roots are the points where the graph touches the x-axis, etc.

limber thunder
#

visualization helps a ton

twin turtle
#

My day job doesn't relate to maths at all, it is all about developing consumer software

#

but again, I am selling myself short by not knowing mathematics -- quant, machine learning, graphics programming so much I am missing out on because "I don't know math"

limber thunder
twin turtle
#

Okay, so @limber thunder I won't be taking any more of your time. Much respect for helping me out through this. Just as a final concluding note

I will work my way up to pre-calculus levels of mathematics so a lot of geometry and linear algebra. Much of my self-study is going be done through the Everything you need to know textbook -- I'll get a supplementary solved workbook to expose myself to even more questions and problems.

Would you say this is fine given my lack of "comfort" and math skills after 10th grade basically

deep mango

If you try looking at (f(x + hv) - f(x))/h

#

And look at the limit

#

Thats what youll get

#

You can imagine moving in just the v direction and seeing the slope there

#

So for example, if f looks like a hill, then in directions v going up the hill, v dot grad f is positive. In directions v going down the hill, v dot grad f is negative. And in directions v going around the hill, there's no change in height, so v dot grad f is 0.

quaint cipher
#

sounds like df in single var

deep mango
#

Exactly

#

In single variable calc df is kinda silly seeming, since we only have 2 directions to go in and one is the negative of the other

#

But in multivariable calc its a lot more important

#

Notice that if v is one of the coordinate vectors like (1, 0) or (0, 1, 0) or whatever

#

Then v dot grad f just gives you the partial derivative of f in that direction

#

So now we get the "partial derivatives" of f in every direction. Sometimes these are called directional derivatives

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here goes

Since I discovered the internet, the ocean of the knowledge it presented was so vast — just by tipping my toes into it I was considered smart and knowledgeable, would always have something to quip about history, physics, science or whatever other factors (credit to Vsauce, Vertasium, Vsauce2!!, numberphile and so so many more) my father also gifted me encyclopedias and they were always a great way to spend my leasiure time

As time goes — my attention got divided into my job and I find myself spending time still watching these videos which are a source of fascination, but now I want to go deeper into a subject — I just watched a video about the Punic war, and I really want to learning it in a deeper way; this happens a lot, with cosmological horrors or obscure math concepts and everything in between; I just don’t know how I should manage my time and go about learning a topic in a “deeper” more meaningful way than having just watched a YouTube video. I want to evolve my learning process as a child, to a deeper and something more significant — if that makes sense

Sorry if this is a bit oddly worded, I really want to communicate how MUCH I want to learn something deeper and be able to share / converse about it with others (I love talking about the stuff I learn)

The harsh reality to me appears I CANT do that because I have my main focus (software) along with side-projects and some math related self study. Looking for advice on this matter

PS — to further add to the list of interesting ideas I would like to learn about; linguistics, sociology, theology, pre-history, marine biology (it’s so alien!), philosophy?, computer theory and heck so much more

i have a question

#

given the implication:
a = 2 -> a^2=4

a^2=4 is called a "necessary condition"

is it called necessary because it's a necessary condition for a to be equal to 2
OR
is it called necessary because it is necessary to happen should a be equal to 2

burnt dune
#

i lost like 3 points in my discrete math course from 4 years ago

#

cuz of this shit

#

"necessary and sufficient"

#

"sufficient only"

#

XD

#

..

stuck moat
#

i genuinely hate the wording

burnt dune
#

i have been reading alot of math textbooks fro the past like

#

7 years

#

i haven't seen these words except like

#

5 times

#

it's useless honestly imo

stuck moat
#

the necessary condition B is clearly not necessary for condition A to be true

#

a can and doesn't have to be two

stuck moat
#

A ... i'm driving
B ... i'm sitting

A -> B

B is not a necessary condition to cause A to be true, i could just be sitting on a chair

agile fiber
#

it's necessary that a^2 = 4 for a = 2

it's sufficient that a = 2 for a^2 = 4

it's necessary and sufficient that a = 2 for a^3 = 8 (given that a is real)

solid snow
#

this is why it’s called a necessary condition

#

think of it as “for y to be true, x has to be true, but x by itself isn’t enough to show that y is true”

jagged forge
solid snow
#

i.e if animal = cat then this animal is a mammal. being a cat is a sufficient condition for an animal being a mammal and being a mammal is a necessary condition for an animal being a cat

stuck moat
#

but if B is true (a^2=4)
why is it necessary for a=2

#

it's like the terms are swapped

solid snow
#

it’s necessary that if a = 2 that a^2 = 4

#

you have the wording mixed up

#

but circling back to what moamen said, this exact wording verbatim shouldnt be too much of a concern as long as you understand the difference between

  1. X being enough to show Y
  2. For Y to be true, X has to be true
stuck moat
#

i dont think point (2) stands

solid snow
#

to give another concrete example. from calculus we know that convergent series need to have the limit of a_n be 0. but this itself is not enough to show that a series is convergent

stuck moat
#

in logical implications, Y can be true and X can be false

solid snow
#

i mean, did the examples not illustrate the difference?

#

in order to be a cat, you have to be a mammal. but being something being a mammal isn’t enough to say that something is a cat

stuck moat
#

no i completely understand you, and the examples illustrate it best

#

but i'm just afraid of coming to an exam and being presented with two statements and having to put them in an implication and screwing up

#

statements as in mathematical ones

solid snow
#

in that case, just try to memorize the order then. in practice, you’ll get accustomed to the distinction without explicitly saying “necessary” or “sufficient” all that often

stuck moat
#

i've come up with a cue i'll try to hold with

#

Can B be false, given that A is true?

#

honestly seems like the best thing i have for testing whether or not i've set up the sides correctly

#

Can a^2=4 be false given that a=2 is true? No.
That means that an implication a=2 -> a^2=4 is correctly set up

What will happen if we emit amplified resonance frequency of a electron ?

Is it possible it will explode ? 😅💀

granite crag
neat lintel
granite crag
ocean harbor
#

idk

granite crag
#

I don't think fundamental particles can have resonance frequencies

neat lintel
#

Why not ?

granite crag
#

protons and neutrons probably can because they're made of quarks, but I'm not sure about electrons

granite crag
neat lintel
#

Hmmm

#

But

#

Dont they move ?

granite crag
#

there aren't any components inside an electron that can move

neat lintel
#

I mean in books in schools they teach they move.
Current going from + to -

Then some time later i found out they go backwards - to +
....

granite crag
#

resonance is an internal thing

#

when you hit a resonance frequency of a bridge, the individual pieces of the bridge are moving relative to each other

neat lintel
#

Like they can move again and again in same states ??

granite crag
#

when you hit a resonance frequency of a molecule, the individual atoms are moving relative to each other

#

if you hit a resonance frequency of proton, I imagine the individual up and down quarks start moving relative to each other

#

there's no smaller components of an electron that can move relative to each other though

#

it's a fundamental particle

neat lintel
#

Well. How about this Can we do the trick with the glass. Amplified resonance frequency sound will break the glass right ?

#

Can that work in space ?
More specifically in vacuum

granite crag
#

you're giving one piece momentum in one direction and another piece momentum in the opposite direction

#

eventually the pieces have enough momentum to break their bonds between each other

neat lintel
#

Can it work in vacuum ?

granite crag
#

I'm not understanding

#

there's no internal degrees of motion inside an electron

#

is what I'm saying

#

that doesn't change in a vacuum

neat lintel
#

Well i see it like
How we amplify or how we make the same resonance frequency

I see it as like this
We use speakers
And those do something with the air waves and we have sound.

Heres the thing in space we dont have sound.
So that changes somethings. For me

neat lintel
burnt ledge
granite crag
neat lintel
#

Hmmmm.... okay.
But what other particles in that universe exist ?
That have resonance frequency ?
U said photon? If i remember right ?

neat lintel
#

Vibrational motion

#

Hmm

granite crag
neat lintel
#

And google says this
The electron is described by a probabilistic quantum wavefunction, which spreads out through space and vibrates, but in such a way that it still has certain discrete properties such as mass

#

What about other particles ?

neat lintel
granite crag
neat lintel
#

Ooh

granite crag
neat lintel
#

Hmmm......

#

I just want to know is it possible to move a electron ?
via its own resonance frequency ?
Like extremely move it like idk sooo much move it

granite crag
#

Do you see how in the picture vibrational motion occurs when you have multiple things connecting together? Well if you have just have one thing then there’s no vibrational motion

granite crag
raven plaza

#

raven plaza
#

Does your butt not shake when walking

neat lintel
#

But is photons faster then electrons ?

granite crag
#

I can slide or skate without it shaking though

neat lintel
#

Wait so when electrons are going really really fast.
And suddenly stop in somewhere. Do they oscillate back and forth while loosing energy and wait and stay there ?

neat lintel
#

I mean. Can we artificially make a resonance frequency ? 🤔

granite crag
#

Electrons cannot

neat lintel
#

Quantum world 👾

granite crag
#

Vibration is when those smaller components move relative to each other

neat lintel
#

Hang on

#

Nvm ig i got wrong path...

#

I was thinking that electrons are made out of more smaller things

granite crag
granite crag
neat lintel
#

Anyways

#

But

#

Butt

#

Does the blood have resonance frequency ?

#

🤔

#

@granite crag

granite crag
neat lintel
#

💀

#

Soo.....

neat lintel
granite crag
#

Cells are way bigger than electrons

neat lintel
#

I mean like which kind of "cells" or blood cells are there existing. ?

#

Or is there only 1 ?

#

For example for 1 person

granite crag
#

Well there’s red blood cells and white blood cells

#

I don’t really know all the different ones I’m not a biologist

neat lintel
#

Google says
There are 3 types of blood cells – red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) carry oxygen to all cells in the body. The oxygen is carried to cells on a protein in red blood cells (called hemoglobin). Hemoglobin is what makes the blood red.

#

Thats bad news and good news...

#

What i mean is

#

Can we amplify 3 cells resonance frequency and make them explode ? 💀💀💀
