Hello discussion 2
This weekend I finished studying all the content covered in my analysis course 6 weeks early
(I technically had a head start of several years)
I've been here over a year, multiple channels, including help, no active
I saw someone recently that's been in this server 2 weeks and already has active role
cries in skill issue
Time to study more analysis
There's so much more to study I don't know what to choose- multivariable? Metric spaces? Whatever I need to study to do measure theory? CA? It's a good problem to have
how does getting active role work
it is automatic, or does someone give you it?
you have an active role rn lol
there's like a secret math roundtable that decides what roles ppl get
the pi table they call it
i know, but i have no idea how i got it
which is why i asked lmao
maybe it's message amount?
you have like 7k
i have like 1k
eh, i got active a while ago
probably when i had about 3-4k or around there
i dont think its the message amount matters, but messages/unit time or something like that
perhaps someone who knows how this server works can answer
maybe!
I've heard it's weighted, each channel has a weight. Discussion is the least weighted.
But getting it in only 2 weeks is crazy either way
weighted?
that seems weird lmao
💯
what's weighted the most then?
secret

my best guess is that the advanced chats are what is weighted the most
That would explain it, since I think I reached very active fairly quickly, and most of my posting has been in the advanced channels.
Did anyone else learn to use chopsticks just by fiddling with them constantly and messing up and like idk one day you noticed it just clicked
Yeah. Though I did see one of my friend's doing it so I had a general idea beforehand.
Yeah
basically yeah
imo they’re nicer to use than spoons/forks though
Tes
I think it depends what I'm using them for
I've only used them for sushi and ramen lmao
Ramen I could use a fork but chopsticks are more fun to maneuver so I can grab hold right 🤣
but for sushi I think it's way better than spoon or fork
Oh I use them for everything lmao
except like soup obviously
Maybe one day I will reach that level of dexterity
I don’t use forks anymore
HAHAHA This reminds me of something
yeah?
It's as the title says, I ate a glass of water with only chopsticks. There's a twist though: my viewers can send in any video they'd like for me to watch, and if I laugh at it-- I add more water to my glass. This is not a cry for help I promise

???
Huh
I don’t think I’m that great with chopsticks
I think I’m closer to about average
Also, what is this about drinking water using chopsticks
how does that work
It's just a meme challenge he did with his Twitch channel
Well, I think they just try to get as much water onto the chopsticks and evapouration deos the rest
I think he just tried to pick up water with the chopsticks, maybe suck it out idk
i… have no words lmao
es just un funny video not srs :c
because hooman like to do thing make no sense
because we like seeing others suffer ig 💀
Oh true true
Also true
ig human psychology is something else
Yup, it's why we're alive for some reason. Also I want to change my nick but it's locked in cause I lost my privs so I'm stuck with this monstrosity.
I don't wanna bother them over a nick lul, I'll try to grind for active after my finals
plus I won't be here that often too :{
they don’t care lol just dm modmail
yeah they don't mind :)
f(x;a) any clue what does the ";" could mean?
It basically tells you that "a" is a parameter. Nothing fundamentally different from a function of two variables, though. You can interpret this as the family of functions f(x) as the parameter a varies.
went to get sushi with friends and one of them showed me. got it well enough to eat easily in like 2 minutes and never bothered 'getting proficient' after that, theyre still a bit awkward for me but like. it all gets into my mouth so idc
You can also be born an southeast asian and have your mom teach you how to use it properly
I just watched food wars and your name shows up
Should I study for my linear algebra class or talk in the esteemed and well regarded mathematical society of excellence, commonly called mathcord?
geometry is the bane of my existence
Do both
where do you think I got my handle from?
you can bullshit with us about linalg
you'll say something stupid, and we will diss you and almost make you quit math
then we help you recover and you understand linalg better
Physics final today 🙂
So I saw this video on umbral calculus today with a delta operator
It defined delta f(x)) = f(x+1) - f(x)
and x to the falling n as x^(n)- = x * (x-1) ... (x - n + 1)
then it proved this delta x^(n)- = nx^(n-1)-
Then because this looks like calc it kinda made a operator to convert between the two
phi d/dx x ^ n = delta phi x ^ n, it defined the new operator phi as that
And then the video just replaced the x^n with like f(x)
And I have no idea how to prove it
I know delta (f(x) + g(x)) = delta f(x) + delta g(x)
Is this umbral calculus
yeah
i just learned that operator in my linear algebra course
we presented it as a linear map over polynomials of degree n to degree n-1
cool
I think I have an idea
The video said something about taylor series
So maybe if it as a taylor series aproaches f(x)
each polynomial will have the rule hold
so it will hold in the limit case?
And how do I prove it for a polynomial
nvm that's easy
cause that holds for both d/dx and delta
they are linear maps
and u can show it fairly easily ||D(f + g) = f(x) = f(x + 1) - f(x) + g(x + 1) - g(x) = (f + g)(x + 1) - (f + g)(x)||
f is a linear map if and only if:
f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y)
f(ax) = af(x)
thats affine
what is affine?
in this situation its just what you are calling a linear function without the restriction f(0) = 0
Yeah my linear algebra knowledge stops at
linear transformations keep lines parallel
and the orgin fixed
axler
will save you
nuture you, with his soft hands
just give in, go into the light
dont listen to what they say
find him
i need to go, they are coming for me
for saying these words
.
lol josemom did u see this
Is there a rational reason why the reciprocal of the sine is called cosecant ?
the sinus?
yes
cosecant = Hyp/Opp , which is the reciprocal of the Sinus = Opp/Hyp
Why did they name Hyp/Opp, cosecant ?
so basically secant "cuts the tangent"
and cosecant "cuts the cotangent"
Let me read this through
Ah Sorry my bad, I meant sine*
ya'll does anyone have a complex plane graphic calculator link
geogebra?
davidbau.com/conformal/#z
might be helpful?
Implement it in desmos yourself
Demos sucks
I thought you said deimos lmao

But it isn’t spamming

No one else was talking!!
Spamming is when five people are having fun with each other
This is wild
sad part is, it was a (semi) interesting question
Shuush you will make them move there
I welcome any and all misfits to #chill . It is the superior #discussion
lmfao
@deep mango Hi
d1 killjoy
What a god awful take
yeah agreed, we're supposed to be mathematicians here
let #X be any channel. It is superior to #discussion
that's impossible because then #discussion would be superior to itself

exercise for the reader
maybe I can weasel out of it by saying superior is reflexive and not meant to be conflated with 'strictly superior' or something
Russell's discussy paradox
hello
not strictly superior
my eyes hurt so much from the pc screentime that i have to type this research assignment while closing my fucking eyes
What's the research assignment
find the perimeter of the square field whose side is 11.8m?
no
Relatable
I want a break from the screens but then I remember I’m online homeschooled so…
Stop it. Get some help.
Seriously though, might wanna pay your optometrist a visit.
light mode user spotted
There are no light mode users, they are non-existent entetities.
Entitys*
@terse comet show em
it is the superior modality
FACT CHECK: TRUE
Entities*
Thanks
I have been bested at my own game 😭
...
What's the difference between a professor and a lecturer?
the person giving a lecture is not necessarily a professor
No its just cause i stared at that fucking screen for 5 hours straight
Not a research assignment bjt we have to make a research paper
^fact check: True
Wait are you a furry?
literally what
No
I love that nobody knows what the hell "anthropogenic" means. is everyone just illiterate now

I feel like anthropogenic climate change is a big enough topic it should just be putting two and two together
yea it should be
???
any website recommendations or youtubers to get good notes from?
Cute theme
it is kind of funny how "anthropomorphic" has morphed into exactly the opposite of what it means
Guys should I show the problem that I didn’t solve to my teacher, it knows that it didn’t explain the topics but I somehow know them, it knows that I like math and I’m good at it, will it get suspicious and tell me that I’m not the one who solved it
It’s just the topics that it didn’t explain, I’m pretty sure if it explained them I’d know how to solve the problem
it?
what are you saying
Are you asking if you should ask your teacher for help understanding the problems you don't know how to do? If so, yes
God how many times are you gonna say it in one sentence…
what's wrong with using light mode
bad for eyes
nothing really
Nope, there has been an agreement from big business not to hire math students after 2029
It's not bad if you do applied math stuff, you can go into software / finance / modeling after
But there are better options if you have a better idea of the direction you'd want
It's not really worth it in that sense
Eh
I don't know the statistics
But the reality is that most people are still just really bad at math
And most people are not choosing to do math degrees for job readiness
So idk if the competition is ever going to be that wild. Certainly not nothing
I have heard (aside from right now because the job market is slow everywhere right now) that this is a relatively low risk path
hello
mewwo wyc
i was wondering why the cosh^2x-sinh^2x graph acts so weird in desmos
because they're hyperbolic functions and they parametrize hyperbola
u^2 - v^2 = 1 is a unit hyperbola
How to resolve Caneta Frac?
what way
,w parametric plot (cosh(t),sinh(t))
i cant post images here but desmos gives weird lines at around x=20 meanwhile wolfram just plots a straight line
the graph of cosh^2(x) - sinh^2(x) is a straight line at level 1
level 1?
cosh^2(x) - sinh^2(x) is equal to 1 for all x
yes but when i plot cosh^2(x)-sinh^2(x) in desmos it doesnt plot a straight line
desmos has a skill issue
more like easy
yeah thats probably it
children should be taught how to self-learn stuff
I shouldn't have stopped and I could've tried harder
But ok what matters is that I've started again now
no point in would'ves and could'ves
indeed
that's what matters
learn from mistakes and move forward
get on that grind

you said next summer?
a
how to follow this well
wait cant you do that dual enrollment thing or whatever?
that's for you to figure out
left as an exercise to the reader
Like you register in uni and study there while also going to hs
wdym?
A) no math or phys, B) only for gr 11 or 12
ah rip
Like I can do one hs credit in the summer (summer school)
wdym no math or phys?
I see okay
Like they don't offer anything for the uni courses
There's some other stuff ig
It's not offered
Gave you the studying! selfrole.

shanghai institute of traditional chinese medicine
Im on ITA
Is that supposed to be a joke?
No?
@mint patio i don't know if you still want it, but i did end up going over that DG problem list
i removed the bad ones, fixed some typos, and added a few new ones
(i think it was you who asked me about it)
traditional medicine okok pass me some weed
No
hlelo chatters
there were a few things i wanted to add to the list but never got around to doing so
the only reason i got around to doing it was as an excuse to learn git and github stuff
just one more thing i can put on resume despite having only done it once or twice
Git serves two purposes for me
- going between computers
- cataloguing my descent into madness as my commit messages become more and more deranged as I go along
what are some math cramming techniques?

Does cramming maths works 💀
@jagged forge suggested me to do so
the math version of cramming is to do lots of problems
wanna see mine?
it's literally just deleting something then putting it back again then pushing
but also it helps if you have an idea what kinds of problems are gonna be on the exam
i do that a lot
also i have linting in my ide so i don’t have to manually pass it through linters
yeah but sometimes you have CI
and your CI system doesnt have the same linters as you
It's basically reading week so I have some time for working on my projects
Tbh I dont think cramming maths will help in long run
the context is that they have an exam in 3 weeks and they havent studied the whole year
Then its good lmao
only one thing to do in that situation
But in the short run for your exam it works great
Just study cheat sheets, say them out loud over and over, and write them out over and over
no, this is the last time im giving a maths exam
Lmaoo now I understand
oh yeah thank you
yeah cheat sheets are good
Ohh when you have exam
Revise all important formulas that's all I can say
Check what channel this is
I did and I regret it
the questions are mostly competency based so formulas alone dont fetch a lot ofmarks, i'll have to practice a variety of questions
Whelp. Also, YouTube
Woah I see
Like you can analyse pattern of questions or particular type of questions they ask you in exam , you can prioritise them first
My math education relies mostly on YouTube
based
i had to resort to YouTube because i could not comprehend at all what my maths teacher spoke during her lectures
- she was too fast to keep up with
yeahh! i've also collected like 10-12 sample papers and i'm trying to do the most frequently asked questions first
that makes up 30% of what's gonna be on the exam
the rest is kinda twisted here and there
confidence is what i really lack lol
like when i see the question and if it's even slightly difficult, i just dont want to solve it
everytime i do maths, it always feels like i'm just starting out lol
i always get a very fresh feeling, which is not very enjoyable
Yes lol
I'm practicing my best
also, i'm thinking about straight up skipping some part
cuz, it's too much for my brain
- i dont have any intentions of scoring a perfect score so be it
hahaha, my parents will kill me haha
thank you very much, you've been a good adviser in these tough times
yes sir
mam

i called you 'sir' as a total sign of respect
it's nice to be polite
don't have to be a teacher or a master to be called sir

welcome lol
hello i really need some advice on maths...
I am (debating) studying the british college maths syllabus, for those who knows what that is, its (edexcel) A-level mathematics.
I am a private candidate, meaning i dont go to school and i study from home. I got above average grades in my secondary school. But i need some help actually quantifying the learning process, especially in my situation.
I would like to know if anybody is willing to hop on a vc with me sometime and share some knowledge on what exactly it is i need to learn and if its worth it?
If someone can help me, would you mind DMing me? Thanks again.
Is it likely or unlikely that 125k people are buying an extended reality(xr) headset with the and capabilities of Vision Pro and meta quest 2 and 3 PER DAY. Consider it evolving each year and the price of the new product version start at 1200$ and decreases at 800$
???
it's apple and 125k is not that much
there r a lot more rich people than u think
125k people everyday
????
125k per day is an absurd number
Yes it is a lot
I think I didn’t specified
125k * 3,500
that's like 1/15 of a twitter
quantifying the learning process,
Don't you do this by just taking practice tests?
its like when you know so much about a topic that when you teach it to someone who knows nothing, you forget that you don't know many things that you do
understandably, he wants to know everything
if digital books count, my "reading" folder
evidently I'm not "reading" them very well
from the reddit thread:
I'm an EE student in my mid 30's and I bought a real analysis book.
I like this guy.
I want to accumulate more. When I die my brain won't be particularly wrinkly. But looking at the stuff that I have on my bookshelf the perception of the wrinkles on my brain will be...incredibly far from what the truth is.
Truly big-brained
in case you still need this an easy solution is to just do a paper and see what you struggle with, and what mistakes u make
the only way someone "on vc"* could help you is by essentially doing the same thing
*there are no vcs in this server to facilitate this
There are vcs you just need to be chronically online to access them
I.E. there arent any vcs to facilitate it
I consider having people in the background talking about their Minecraft world to be something that facilitates my learning
Thats just my learning style but it's not for everyone
i have a question: how do you study when you feel 'drained' for the day
like after only 7 hours I completely drain up my brain 'stamina' and my head feels empty
Force youselft to study.... and eventually you will have a migraine. If after 7h you are done then you are done so the best you can do is rest
but I see some people pulling off like 10~12 hours study straight
i want to be like them
Then like I said, force yourself. If your nose bleed, have constant headache or migraine, bad sleep rutine then its your problem
Is not healthy study so many hours for several days
have you wondered how much of 10-12 hours were productive
however he doesnt have access to that
so
its not there for him
Video games
They give me study energy
actually that is a pretty good idea
maybe I should start playing a fast-paced short games
the thing is, i know NOTHING about the new syllabus. Im looking at the paper like wtf am i looking at
i was gonna ask things like where would be the best place to start
a roadmap or checklist of sorts: know this before you do this, then do this, then that etc.
because im supposed to teach this all to myself but this seems infinitely more complex than i imagined
i like math on a fundamental level but along with that "chronological roadmap" how much of my time per week has to be allocated to effectively learn this math.
i believe im capable of learning it but... how! 😂
this is my spec btw
You can look up the syllabus on google.
That depends. How much time do you have?
Also what’s the end goal here?
my end goal is to get a high grade on the exam
ive got a year and a half
until i have to sit it
but for the life of me i dont know where to start
it would be incredibly helpful if someone could look at my spec and be like right this is what you need to know, heres the order you learn it, heres the resources id recommend and bang it out
because im looking at the syllabus without the slightest clue of what anything is
i have basic knowledge of mathemetics, enough to kinda start pre uni maths
like a good grasp on algebra and functions and graphs and stuff
but im looking at stuff like cubic factorisation like bruh what
On this site https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-a-levels/mathematics-2017.coursematerials.html#%2FfilterQuery=category:Pearson-UK:Category%2FSpecification-and-sample-assessments you can find the specifications for A level maths and super maths for your course. Look through the files and you’ll see what contents are covered pretty much in chronological order.
Edexcel AS and A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics (2017) information for students and teachers, including the specification, past papers, news and support.
If you have the money for it, it’s definitely beneficial to buy the edexcel textbooks. That’s probably the best solution for your situation…
After that, look through stuff on physicsandmathstutor, alevelmathsrevision, and madasmaths for questions on each topic.
lol this song started playing when I saw you
lol
take a look at the specifications, the textbooks, and do as many exercises as you can find on every topic therein
https://mathsisfun.com/ is a great resource for getting an introduction to i think pretty much any topic up to and including alevel and usually has exercises too i think
mathisfun is great it taught me simple calculus
what's ur guys tierlist of the hardest to easiest subjects in math?
probably literally impossible to do
a very hard subject would be random matrix theory
a very easy subject would be addition
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, all of that but with fractions, linear equations, exponents, simple number theory, logs, all of that but with complex numbers, geometry, trig, quadratic equations, differentiation
approximately the order i learned stuff in
well it would be hard to decide on a hardest, since the hardest ones are not gonna be universally taught
I'm curious as to how you guys would rank them in a tier list
it doesn't have to be one is harder than the other
they can be on the same/similar lvls
if you give me a list of subjects, I'll give you my opinion on how to order them
calc 1/2, multivar calc, linear algebra, PDE's, ODE's, real analysis, statistics, complex analysis, numerical methods, discrete math
probably missing a lot but
¯_(ツ)_/¯
that's very american
yes, i am american
Ok, I'll try to rank the ones I can
feel free to mash subjects up if you'd like, lol
well statistics is also weird
as that should be a graduate course
PDEs, statistics, ODEs, complex analysis, real analysis, linear algebra
would be my ranking
from hardest to easiest?
yes
interesting
keep in mind im an undergrad so i havent taken a lot of these courses but ive heard a lot of people freak out over real analysis
and for me, there are multiple statistics courses so i doubt we go as in depth as what you might have taken
ah okay interesting
that is normal, but it's completely manageable
it's mostly hard for the time, but overall still easier
it's just one of the first courses you take
so much analysis 😵💫
missing some algebra, functional analysis, commutative algebra, Galois/field theory
its an applied math curriculum
no geometry/topology either
my uni doesnt have a pure math 😔
oh that makes sense
all i know about analysis is how to differentiate some simple functions and the concepts of derivatives, integrals, and limits
where can i post imgs
why does it seem like analysis so much more useful to real world applications than other areas of math?
i mean, newton was a physicist
guys how can i post an image
and the entire area as i understand it is a study of things that change, like functions etc.
idk man ctrl c ctrl v
wont work in this channel tho
maybe its not allowed
it also makes sense that you apply math thats supposed describe things that change in the real world, to the real world
he was a mathematician as much as he was a physicist imo
which channel can i post imgs in
true, i think those fields are inherently very entangled
do you have a question? go to an open channel under MATH HELP (AVAILABLE) section and go ask ur question there
you can post images there i believe
can someone help me out rq
i have a test thing for school and i have to make an excel sheet that calculates friction coefficients for a ladder with friction on both ends. I have all the numbers i need i just cant figure out the formula that allows me to get the force from the wall which is what i need to calculate the rest
I NEED HELP WITH FRACTION GRADE 9 MATH
YOU CALCULATE DIFF TYPES OF FRACTIONS IN DIFF TYPE OF WAY AND THE INTEGERS MESS YOU UP TOO IN TIMES
WHY ARE WE YELLING
integers always messing people up
BECAUSE I NEED URGENT HELP I HAVE UPCOMING MATH TEST ON THE FRACTIONS
next time don't wait until the last minute
i didnt know it will get complicating
MY BRAIN ISNT BRAINING WHEN IN TIMES AS OF SUBTRACTION I SUBTRACT AND GET THE WRONG ANSWER AND OTHER STUFF
you do realize that people are significantly less likely to help you if you behave like this?
im frustrated you know
FOR REAL
Also what do you mean?
rationals
any1 know a good math joke
or idk
just spit some formulas so i can make one
just random stuff
I can’t think of any 😭 that are actually funny
So, can you give me an example problem?
like something with an ex girfriend
the ex being e^x
and the OP being naturla log
or something like that
There definitely is. Like there’s a kid in my math class named Conrad, so now some people call him Conradical
3 3/5 - (3 1/2 - 2 1/3)
And your issue is where?
how am i supposed to present this as a joke
Exactly, you can’t
wait lemme take a photo of it and also I dont understand how every other type rational is always calculated in diff ways and then the integers
Hmm??
M’kay
why did math do math because of answer but then make the actual joke be that it isnt funny
Ah, I see
Nah it’s fine, I understood it
ok so whats generally seen as funny in jokes
wait
let me reformulate
we need a joke template
idk what
Quadratic formula
That’s all I’ve got 😭
and just not having any reaction at all
nono lmfao it was good
it was kinda funny actually
Oh okay ha ha!
Oh ha! No
why was seven scared of 9
wait other way
i hate that joke so much
i didnt even say it right
i give up lmoa
For real
WAIT
aw man nvm
i had something
then i lost it
but hear me out
i present the characters
then the say
yea cosine and i used to be together
but tbh
were kinda on and off
cus
1 to -1
whatever man
making jokes is hard
Yeah 😞
wheres the guy who was sending his hw
He warped to the complex plane instead, where math homework doesn’t exist
tell me you secrets
I wasn’t trying to make a joke 😭!
Ha ha, thanks!
np bro 😭
I hate mathsjdkawodjankwdlkaw
quuen, we all do
who doesn't right
@mathsjdkawodjankwdlkaw shes talking shit about u
I actually use teacup/walmart bag pronouns /j
That's offensive!1!
sadly we don't have a colored badge for those yet
I know it's annoying!!
hey, i know this is a math channel, but is anyone able to give me some help understanding froth flotation?
this isn’t a math channel
math server* my bad
oh ok
stuff to prepare you for calculus
just thought there was more to it lol
usually there's a couple more things but that's all i remember tbh
ok

whoa this chat is dead still
just like me
Yall know my freind used this server to chest in math test online then nobody in this server was active so he had to retake

aw so terrible that nobody was available to help your "friend" commit academic dishonesty
use homework helpers discord server next time
(i do not condone academic dishonesty)
Disgusting
Not me
Okay. Your friend should get smarter
yall relax not everyone no lifes math
Who asked?
It literally takes a couple of days or weeks to study a whole semester / year of math work. Bro is gonna grow up and not be able to help their fourth grader with homework
that is complete bullshit
is there a way to change themes in wolframalpha
idk
that doesn't even enter my thoughts
wdym themes
light mode hurts my eyes
i mean i assume thats what brandon meant
i can't seem to find a way to change to dark mode
nobody is reading rudin in a cuple days
man look at this guy
not every website has a dedicated "dark mode theme" hidden in it
if its not there, its not there
idk bud i've seen somebody with it
you instead should go google https://google.com/search?q=dark+reader
there's probably a browser extension that can do it for you
yea probably
that is prolly external
this is a browser extension that can put in a dark theme for you
ok thanks guys

this was last years, for reference
say this after you pass the ap calc test lol
dead inside*
see how the meaning changes
when you use italics
Maybe Erdös
But it's definitely possible to read 10 pages a day very thoroughly
In like 8-12 hours
And if you continue like that, you could read 300 pages a month
That's insane
Say what
Yea yea ok

If gravity was suddenly reversed would you fall towards the sky?
I know that right now everything that is touching the ground is accelerating upwards ( not downwards ) at a rate of approximately 9.8m/s
so if like gravity was to be reversed how would that affect your acceleration and position in space?
Would it just be like zero g instead of actually falling upwards
because once you stop touching the ground that 9.8m/s of upward acceleration goes away and cancels out the effect of reversed gravity?
you are accelerating downward, not upward, otherwise you would not be rotating along with the earth
You're accelerating upwards. It just seems as you are going downwards due to the curvature of space
ok then
you're conflating two models
two models
So how would reversed gravity work in this model?
Before you leave a comment that this video is wrong or I am a flat Earther or that this could only be true if the Earth is expanding (see below), stop yourself. It's 100% consistent with textbook general relativity, and there's nothing inaccurate about the claim that Earth's surface is accelerating upwards. So, if you were about to leave such a ...
wait
A physicist should explain this
need someone who understands general relativity
i don't feel like it's strictly accurate to say you're not accelerating just because you're not following gravity th o
it just means you're not traveling along a spacetime geodesic
or something
You would be seemingly flung into space because there would be no friction holding you to the rotation of the earth
But you wouldnt accelerate upwards
The earth would just move away relative to you
the earth is constantly expanding like a balloon, that's the acceleration we feel
hi all
corollary: the earth cannot be curved, otherwise we would notice a change in curvature as the radius increases
the planet would explode
ok but what if we also reversed the electric force simultaneously too
If gravity was reversed, then Newton’s Law of Gravitation would be contradicted
For gravity to be reversed, there must be some force that counteracts the earth’s gravitational pull
just make all masses repel each other
just plop a negative sign in there
what's the reasoning that lead you to ask this question though?
is it just a question asked for fun?
must be in #chill
yeah only psychopaths can post in discussion
Let $A$ be adjacency matrix of connected graph, i.e. a $n\times n$ matrix whose entries are $0$ or $1$, and diagonal free. And $$Q:=[x y]\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times 2}$$ where $x:=[\cos\theta_1,\cdots,\cos\theta_n]^T\in\mathbb{R}^n$ and $y:=[\sin\theta_1,\cdots,\sin\theta_n]^T\in\mathbb{R}^n$.
Assume $$\text{ddiag}(AQQ^T)-A\circ QQ^T\succeq 0$$
My question is, why it implies the following inequality?
$$\langle\text{diag}(AQQ^T)-A\circ QQ^T,QQ^T\rangle=\langle A,QQ^T\rangle-\langle A,QQ^T\circ QQ^T\rangle\geq 0.$$
sorry i was in the wrong discussion group i should be in math discussion not here

maybe this question first: Is $QQ^T$ positive semidefinite?

It doesn't make sense to "reverse" gravity, it means changing the geometry/curvature of spacetime.
Probably the closest thing might be if you imagine putting some supermassive object above your head and then you'd fall into that object
Since, falling with a """gravitational field""" corresponds to just moving in a stright line in spacetime
So you'd need to change the geometry to make that straight line be in a different direction
tl;dr gravity is literally just not a force in GR, so it doesn't even make sense to "reverse its direction"
Yes, that's pretty much the definition of PSD since:
if you can express a matrix A = X^{T}X if and only if A is a PSD matrix
Since if A is PSD A^{T} is PSD we get your result
$\langle X,Y \rangle = tr(XY) = tr(XLL^\top) = tr(L^\top XL) \geq 0$ if $X,Y$ are symmetric positive semidefinite where the last inequality follows from positive semidefiniteness of $L^\top XL$, so the inner product of two symmetric positive definite matrices is non-negative
Transparent Elemental
Thank you @burnt kettle @river moon , and why "if you can express a matrix A = X^{T}X if and only if A is a PSD matrix"?
if A = X^T X then it's positive definite by definition that z^TAz >= 0
the other direction is a bit harder to prove
$z^TAz=z^T X^T X z = (Xz)^T Xz$

can texit perform calculations?
like if I give it inputs and a formula can it give me the output
yeah but the bot also seems to offer other utilities
such as quering wolfram, basic calculations etc
I was wondering if it can perform more complex calculations for me
then sure?
wolframalpha can do quite a lot
but you can just use it in your web browser
could you come over in #bots and show me how to make it calculate the area of a circle please?
By what bots do u guys get help from (usually)
Is it bots as in apps or bots as in discord
just @quasi jetty
Aight
Thanks
Is there anyone besides bots that helps out to, particularly non bots (human)

hi
okay i had TWO questions
first was, if you had any book recommendations about computer architechture
and the second, i was gonna send you 2 files for you to decide which one is more readable
forget about the 2nd one
@jagged forge dont get mad about ping
don't know if i have too many good sources for computer architecture, i've kind of learned about it from random places over time
but a classic is What Every Programmer Should Know About Memory
it might be a bit too technical for your level, so sorry if it's a bit overwhelming
thank you mark
this book also has some good sections on architecture though it's more oriented around performance optimization: https://en.algorithmica.org/hpc/

Linear Type theory.
im trying to be minimal in this.
Struct is usefull for deep inference, i took it from the calculus of structures.
also Struct_x T is identical to saying Type T
there's always the Bible

Can someone explain to me why this calculator is more expensive than my laptop?
https://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-TI-86-Graphing-Calculator/dp/B00000JF53

hi. We know that $\max{f(x),g(x)} = \frac{f(x)+g(x)+|f(x)-g(x)||}{2}$, how about $\max{f_1(x),f_2(x),f_3(x),f_4(x)$?

apply inductively
max (a, b, c) = max(max(a, b), c) etc
next time see #❓how-to-get-help
Is it true that $\max{f_1,f_2,f_3,f_4}=\max\big{\max{f_1,f_2},\max{f_3,f_4}\big}=\max\big{\frac{f_1+f_2+|f_1-f_2|}{2},\frac{f_3+f_4+|f_3-f_4|}{2}\big}=\frac{\frac{f_1+f_2+|f_1-f_2|}{2}+\frac{f_3+f_4+|f_3-f_4|}{2}+\big|\frac{f_1+f_2+|f_1-f_2|}{2}-\frac{f_3+f_4+|f_3-f_4|}{2}\big|}{2}$?

got it!
main memory is still 100 times slower than l1 cache so yeah
i think they mention hdd’s though, which is a bit outdated since nowadays nvme is so common (but hdd still have their use) and so much faster than hdd
is there a way to substitute values in wolframalpha
or do you have to change the variables manually
"where x = whatever"

Is there an actual nice form for max a_n to apply induction to?
When I put it into wolfram alpha all I got were a bunch of complicated non-symmetric expressions
why do you want to replace what is a simple if with complicated arithmetic in the first place...
If you're doing induction you should have a form dependent on n to apply induction to
I'm trying to do the opposite
n is the number of inputs
You said apply induction so you have a formula in mind right?
the induction is simply noticing that max(a_1, ..., a_n) = max(max(a_1, a_2), ..., a_n)
the person who asked presented a formula
Oh
induction is used to reduce the case of n inputs to the case of 2 inputs
Strictly speaking, it's not induction (what would P(n)=>P(n+1) be?). If you mean to prove max(a_1, ..., a_n) = max(max(a_1, a_2), ..., a_n) with induction, then that's a separate problem from the original question
I agree recursively apply the formula makes more sense
thats the key point the asker was missing though
Yea, I was just confused as someone outside reading over it
gm? it was the afternoon when you posted this lol
good afternoon though

Hello, I am not sure if this is the best place but I guess everyone here has come across this problem and found their own solution to it
What do you all do for literature review? What did you find the most effective way for tracking and reviewing papers?
I am looking for something that's free, works across platforms (also available on web), no memory limit
Or any workaround the limitations of freeware
not sure what you mean by reviewing, but i use zotero
How to make learning fun?
Not possible, sorry.
do it for pure good
Sorry?
I am disappointed
Fun and learning in the same sentence
How do you do it?
How to stop playing games when bored
and learn instead
learn something interesting
so you never feel like ur working
you do have to have a genuine interests in whatever you want to learn about but I've found that you can build the genuine interests after taking a chance on learning something you think might not be so interesting in the first place @neat lintel

Well if you are looking for fun then you should just approach it in a systematic way
Pick a topic and divide it into subcategories then go through them category by category
like operating systems
Just do this with anything you find overwhelming
Like math!
id agree if i knew how those worked
maybe
yessir 🔥🔥🔥
hey anyone know a list of undergrad math comps?
putnam comes to mind. most unis have their own, closed competitions tho
man im not an undergead im just givin my two cents
maybe somethin here will be good for you
