Hello discussion 2

#

This weekend I finished studying all the content covered in my analysis course 6 weeks early

#

(I technically had a head start of several years)

ripe needle
#

I've been here over a year, multiple channels, including help, no active

I saw someone recently that's been in this server 2 weeks and already has active role

cries in skill issue

muted totem
# ripe needle Time to study more analysis

There's so much more to study I don't know what to choose- multivariable? Metric spaces? Whatever I need to study to do measure theory? CA? It's a good problem to have

fresh comet
#

it is automatic, or does someone give you it?

slate turret
#

you have an active role rn lol

#

there's like a secret math roundtable that decides what roles ppl get

#

the pi table they call it

fresh comet
#

which is why i asked lmao

slate turret
#

you have like 7k

#

i have like 1k

fresh comet
#

eh, i got active a while ago

#

probably when i had about 3-4k or around there

#

i dont think its the message amount matters, but messages/unit time or something like that

#

perhaps someone who knows how this server works can answer

slate turret
#

maybe!

ripe needle
#

I've heard it's weighted, each channel has a weight. Discussion is the least weighted.

But getting it in only 2 weeks is crazy either way

fresh comet
#

that seems weird lmao

ripe needle
fresh comet
#

what's weighted the most then?

solid snow
#

secret

fresh comet
slate turret
#

my best guess is that the advanced chats are what is weighted the most

old oak
#

That would explain it, since I think I reached very active fairly quickly, and most of my posting has been in the advanced channels.

Did anyone else learn to use chopsticks just by fiddling with them constantly and messing up and like idk one day you noticed it just clicked

sly flint
mint patio
#

I've never seen anyone proficient with chopsticks in person

#

Just in vidoes

fresh comet
#

imo they’re nicer to use than spoons/forks though

mint patio
#

I've only used them for sushi and ramen lmao

#

Ramen I could use a fork but chopsticks are more fun to maneuver so I can grab hold right 🤣

#

but for sushi I think it's way better than spoon or fork

fresh comet
#

except like soup obviously

mint patio
#

Maybe one day I will reach that level of dexterity

fresh comet
#

I don’t use forks anymore

fresh comet
#

It's as the title says, I ate a glass of water with only chopsticks. There's a twist though: my viewers can send in any video they'd like for me to watch, and if I laugh at it-- I add more water to my glass. This is not a cry for help I promise

sleek pagoda
#

So I saw this video on umbral calculus today with a delta operator

#

It defined delta f(x)) = f(x+1) - f(x)

#

and x to the falling n as x^(n)- = x * (x-1) ... (x - n + 1)

#

then it proved this delta x^(n)- = nx^(n-1)-

#

Then because this looks like calc it kinda made a operator to convert between the two

#

phi d/dx x ^ n = delta phi x ^ n, it defined the new operator phi as that

#

And then the video just replaced the x^n with like f(x)

#

And I have no idea how to prove it

#

I know delta (f(x) + g(x)) = delta f(x) + delta g(x)

cold needle
#

Is this umbral calculus

sleek pagoda
craggy gust
#

i just learned that operator in my linear algebra course

#

we presented it as a linear map over polynomials of degree n to degree n-1

sleek pagoda
#

cool

#

I think I have an idea

#

The video said something about taylor series

#

So maybe if it as a taylor series aproaches f(x)

#

each polynomial will have the rule hold

#

so it will hold in the limit case?

#

And how do I prove it for a polynomial

#

nvm that's easy

sleek pagoda
craggy gust
#

they are linear maps

#

and u can show it fairly easily ||D(f + g) = f(x) = f(x + 1) - f(x) + g(x + 1) - g(x) = (f + g)(x + 1) - (f + g)(x)||

sleek pagoda
#

what is a linear map?

craggy gust
#

f is a linear map if and only if:
f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y)
f(ax) = af(x)

sleek pagoda
#

ohhh

#

Kinda like a linear function

#

without the

#

f(0) = 0

#

condition

craggy gust
#

thats affine

sleek pagoda
#

what is affine?

craggy gust

in this situation its just what you are calling a linear function without the restriction f(0) = 0

hello i really need some advice on maths...

I am (debating) studying the british college maths syllabus, for those who knows what that is, its (edexcel) A-level mathematics.

I am a private candidate, meaning i dont go to school and i study from home. I got above average grades in my secondary school. But i need some help actually quantifying the learning process, especially in my situation.

I would like to know if anybody is willing to hop on a vc with me sometime and share some knowledge on what exactly it is i need to learn and if its worth it?

If someone can help me, would you mind DMing me? Thanks again.

Look through the files and you’ll see what contents are covered pretty much in chronological order.

#

If you have the money for it, it’s definitely beneficial to buy the edexcel textbooks. That’s probably the best solution for your situation…

If gravity was suddenly reversed would you fall towards the sky?

#

I know that right now everything that is touching the ground is accelerating upwards ( not downwards ) at a rate of approximately 9.8m/s

#

so if like gravity was to be reversed how would that affect your acceleration and position in space?

#

Would it just be like zero g instead of actually falling upwards

#

because once you stop touching the ground that 9.8m/s of upward acceleration goes away and cancels out the effect of reversed gravity?

Let $A$ be adjacency matrix of connected graph, i.e. a $n\times n$ matrix whose entries are $0$ or $1$, and diagonal free. And $$Q:=[x y]\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times 2}$$ where $x:=[\cos\theta_1,\cdots,\cos\theta_n]^T\in\mathbb{R}^n$ and $y:=[\sin\theta_1,\cdots,\sin\theta_n]^T\in\mathbb{R}^n$.
Assume $$\text{ddiag}(AQQ^T)-A\circ QQ^T\succeq 0$$

My question is, why it implies the following inequality?

$$\langle\text{diag}(AQQ^T)-A\circ QQ^T,QQ^T\rangle=\langle A,QQ^T\rangle-\langle A,QQ^T\circ QQ^T\rangle\geq 0.$$

Since, falling with a """gravitational field""" corresponds to just moving in a stright line in spacetime

So you'd need to change the geometry to make that straight line be in a different direction

if A = X^T X then it's positive definite by definition that z^TAz >= 0

When I put it into wolfram alpha all I got were a bunch of complicated non-symmetric expressions

surreal sapphire
#

why do you want to replace what is a simple if with complicated arithmetic in the first place...

zealous stone
#

If you're doing induction you should have a form dependent on n to apply induction to

surreal sapphire
#

n is the number of inputs

zealous stone
#

You said apply induction so you have a formula in mind right?

surreal sapphire
#

the induction is simply noticing that max(a_1, ..., a_n) = max(max(a_1, a_2), ..., a_n)

#

the person who asked presented a formula

zealous stone
#

Oh

surreal sapphire
#

induction is used to reduce the case of n inputs to the case of 2 inputs

zealous stone
#

I wouldn't really call that induction though...

#

That's my bad

surreal sapphire
#

well, it is

#

though maybe "recursively apply" is the better wording

zealous stone
#

Strictly speaking, it's not induction (what would P(n)=>P(n+1) be?). If you mean to prove max(a_1, ..., a_n) = max(max(a_1, a_2), ..., a_n) with induction, then that's a separate problem from the original question

I agree recursively apply the formula makes more sense
