@void tundra better prepare yourself
do ring theory forever
cause im anal pilled ~~altho i wanted to do loomis sternberg for linalg too

do you wanna vc tomorrow
we can do algebra together!
skill issue

except when hair loss
nope
unless I (somehow) get to like AG I will be learning just the bare minimum to scrape by, thankyu very much

sigma rings
you know how I got to like AG?
I did toric geometry and then realized what a pony farm ag is

today is a good day
I never got into algebra that much analysis always felt more fun for me but eventually I'll have to get to it since it paves the way for cool subjects
or I could technically delay having to do some longer by going the measure theory and probability route
cursed technique
I'm doing that rn :3
measure theory gud
I've found a very exhaustive book already for whenever I go for it
but it seems to cover much more than I'll need for probability but whatever
which one
it's the one by Yeh J
Hmm the monograph
it seems to be a very good reference but no idea how it'll be to actually get through the topic
but the reviews I've been reading on it seem to be very positive so I'll probably get it worst case I'll have a good reference

@mental stratus wanna learn about the universal property of kernels and cokernels?

how am i expected to know some category theory 😵💫
I wanna
i am about to start my abstract algebra journey
A monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors
if you want to do some gallian + judson + hungerford i might be down
oh
mb then
I just thought I'd ask
nooo
No shame in it DarQ my buddy
Lmfao
speaking of categories, hungerford has this crazy thing it calls the universal mapping property, maybe explain this to me here
hmm
let's see
this is just the universal property of a product
but the product can be infinite
L, it proves uniqueness
universal properties guarantee uniqueness up to isomorphism by design
this is in the first chapter of the book in the preliminaries section with a bunch of set theory and stuff
it's prolly not super important
but I'll explain it anyways
ok, so to make things simple
let's bring up a few concrete examples
just take I={1, 2, 3}
and the sets are just 3 real number lines
so there are a bunch of different way to take the cartesian product of those 3 sets
huh?
yea
the elements can look like (x, y, z) where x,y and z are real numbers
that is, a tuple with 3 elements
another way is ((x,y), z)
that is, a tuple of a tuple of 2 real numbers and a real number
or maybe even (x, (y, z))
the thing is, all of these constructions are pretty much the same
what do I mean by that is that they are bijective
natural isomorphism or something is how they were presented when i did a theory of computations book lol
(in a general setting we'd say they're isomorphic)
hmm
i dunno what a natural isomorphism is but
go on, it was in the same context
natural isomorphism in that context prolly just means "the obvious isomorphism"
what that proposition tells us is that if set together with the projection morphisms satisfy the property mentioned
then as far as you can tell it's the cartesian product
of the sets that you wanna take the product of, ofc
those projection morphisms are important btw
hmm
coz, technically, R for instance is bijective to R^3
it has the same cardinality
so it could, technically, be looked at as that cartesian product but we don't usually think of it that way coz the projection morphisms aren't obvious
in opposition to this
It might be easier to see the diagram for just the product of 2 sets $A \times B$ with projections $\pi_A, \pi_B$. What this is saying is that for any $f_A\colon X \to A$ and $f_B\colon X \to B$ we have that there exists a \textbf{unique} $f$ such that $\pi_A \circ f = f_A$ and $\pi_B \circ f = f_B$. So we can always ``factor'' through $A \times B$.
spamakin
where the projection is very obvious
the universal property of the product is that the existence of that unique f
for any X and maps f_A, f_B as drawn there
what Hungerford has stated there is hard to understand because it's for arbitrary products
aah
hmm
and this diagram extends in the way you think for the product of 3 sets
or 4 sets, etc
just gets much harder to draw lol
but does that diagram make sense?
and here spamakin explains what the property mentioned tells us
which I was going to do but I'm glad he saved me the effort
it does
there was a big lack of pictures so I came in with a pic lol
yea, even his reference is lacking which is kinda cringe
so @mental stratus any questions?
hmm
what are like the consequences of this tho? like any kind of applications? as in is there some kind of important result you can prove with this?
not really I would say
well it's just the property of the product
you can think of this as the definition of product
and not just products of sets
as in, you could always get around using this property
but of algebraic structures, topological spaces, etc
they all have this universal property
hmm, i had a hunch because it doesn't look like the kind of thing that gives you anything lol
category theory becomes a powerful tool later
but it's sometimes convenient to think of the product as the unique object (up to isomorphism) that satisfies this property
in like algebraic topology and algebraic geometry
for some things it becomes more natural to state their definitions in terms of universal properties
it also spares you from finding concrete construction of the product
since any construction you could come up with would satisfy the property
and vice versa
so why not just use the property
hmm, wait lemme look up universal property for topo spaces
hmm. great thanks DarQ and Spamakin for the help, i think i have the idea down now
Universal property for the product topology: For every topological space $Z$ and every function $f: Z \rightarrow X$, $f$ is continuous iff for every $\alpha \in A$, the component $\pi_{\alpha} f: Z \rightarrow X_{\alpha}$ is continuous
imsadandbrad
I posted some garb
are you free to vc rn?
also do you know anything about category theory/universal properties?
Awww, no

I know a little bit about category theory
I'm on a trip with family and so getting dragged along to participate in family activities
hahaha
I vaguely know what a universal property is but I couldn't tell you confidently
brah what

What is a symbol for an epimorphism?
$\twoheadrightarrow$
(m+p)akka
Ok
@restive bough I have actually thought about mathematical models of language a bit, and honestly the "free monoid over set of phonemes" is about as good as I've got. You can then define a map from that object to some abstract "set of possible meanings"
all monomorphisms are isomorphisms
me when my christmas tree falls over
You cannot define such a map because homophones exist.
that seems a very charlie brown-ish tree
Surely at least power set of set of possible meanings
ok but is there a homomorphism between morphemes and phonemes? There's clearly not isomorphism because homonyms exist
No

@sleek wing my slide rule competition practice problems
I don't really care that much I'm just incredibly surprised that
well I don't like to dunk on hobbies but
something so pointless has a competitive scene
fortnite has a competitive scene, you're really surprised at this?
fortnite has millions of players
yeah, and is objectively terrible for competitive formatting of games
there are literally 5 slide rules in existence
wot??? how??? how then what are these other two things I own in my 7 object collection????
(kidding)
they're actually far more ubiquitous than most people realize, they're just hidden in drawers in grandparents' houses and in supply closets at universities.
/kats?s/ and /kats?z/ = cats'
wrong vowel but I don't have ipa keyboard so close enough
Homotopy type theory = all maps are continuous and homomorphisms.
I teach most of my students how to use slide rules, because it makes them better at math
at the very least better at logs
I think the bigger questions would be about maps between the phoneme strings of different languages, which preserves meaning
I did my high school chem final with a slide rule, as a personal challenge
they almost didn't let me do it because it wasn't on the list of approved calculators
I speak a language where the the fiber over a single word into semantic space is absolutely enormous.
ignore my bad phrasing
That might be due to the fiber being enormous
ah, yes, let me just pull up the answers to the test on the screen of my Mannheim rule... one sec.... where's the screen again?
what about the fiber of "fiber"?
well, glossing into the language, "linja" is the image of the set {string, line, thread, fiber, noodle, ...} which is quite a diverse set
nope
though it may be a cognate
oh, it's in my third language too, that's funny
being fluent in toki pona makes things weird sometimes, because it draws from everywhere
Well it's listed as "line" for a few norse languages
I really need to get back to toki pona
it's not much work
I just keep procrastinating it
o kama sona 😈
my second language is toki pona, my third, which I'm still learning, is Norsk
Neat
still waiting for someone to recognize the language, think it's cringe, and sully my comment lol
I've got a few years of spanish and a bit of russian from luodingo
I'm literally translating this as "future knowledge", right?
o kama sona
IMPERATIVE arrive knowledge
come knowledgeably
learn!
hello
i'm not a big fan of conlangs
Why not
they do not model the way languages develop naturally
and they're not allowed to evolve naturally because their creators generally don't allow natural evolution
Yeah but you can’t really model that perfectly, and some of them are made to be artistic in the first place
so they don't tell us much of anything at all about language
How can a constructed language naturally evolve (unless it’s like spoken natively like Esperanto)
exactly
Conlangs are quite diverse tho
so yeah, fine, if you want to identifyt them as art projects sure
but then what is the point of learning them
There isn’t really any good one other then that it’s fun
sure if that floats your boat. it does not float mine
No one forces you to learn them lol
sup violet
And btw conlangs that aim to become the “global language” are pretty obviously destined to fail
Tired and dead inside, wbu
about same lel
I'll be gud eventually
I'm just sad about some stuff
Aw I hope that gets better
I didn’t study for like 4 days and I have no motivation to do anything so I’m the human equivalent of a fucking carpet now
🙏
Yeah because they are eurocentric
wait till you hear how many days i have not studying sh** for
lies , you study 24×7
hi
sure
i can’t promise you’ll like mine though
my roommate has a playlist with songs he collected for a decade
Ive heard darq's it's a mess
well you only need the light when it's burning low
lies
lmfao
only miss the sun when it starts to snow
let it go passenger?

I have that in my playlist lel
my roommate called me a white girl for listening to that song
oof i’m a soundcloud user
Ugh
Soundcloud bad
oh right soundcloud embeds are broken right now
are you one of those people who just associates soundcloud with garbage rappers and nothing else
I associate soundcloud with broken embeds

Yes
I associate soundcloud with low quality

i should have just sent a troll playlist
everything you touch surely dies....
but you only need the light when it's burning low
a playlist with songs where they’re just constantly yelling
staring at the ceiling in the dark smae old empty feeling in the heart
@bright hill totally listen to this song https://on.soundcloud.com/Dc2XLwaBF1t4yT9m7
that'dn't be fair!
D:<
I sent a non troll playlist
i did too but it’s a bit old
Hi buddy I am ayush
meanwhile me cries in no playlist
soundcloud and their 500 song limit…
hi ayush
I also don't have a playlist
weirdo
you just remember every single song you like
Having a playlist is strange
@mental stratus hi what's your name
if you don’t remember it you just didn’t actually like it
No, I don't care if I forget songs though
pikachu
@mental stratus your real name
There's always plenty more for me to like
you don't ask that to strangers on the internet you dummy

@long matrix not a nice joke😐
Ryc aren’t you older than shuri?
ok but seriously stop pinging people to quiz them on... their personal info ig
I don't know
I listen to it when I want to
and you wanna listen to it quasi-often
Why would I throw it in a list
wat
I look it up
on youtube
Yeah
coz it's convenient?
I don't care about that
while you work do you just look up songs every 4 minutes?
And most other people don't. They just create playlists because it's what is expected of them
most people see the obvious convenience of playlists
No i either look up an album or i let it autoplay
albums are just official playlists
hah, now need to prove that no element equals its own succ
they're also supremely cringe
my music playlist is officially 42 gigabytes in size with 5600 songs
i don’t really listen to albums
i just add the songs i like to a playlist and forget about the others
there are a few albums which are full of bangers though
lmfao
I've heard of these elusive albums too
but I've never experienced them
i can only think of a few albums where i like every song
but one of those also only has 6 songs on it lol
hurb
this is a troll
I can just tell
???
did you listen to it
what is it lol
I stopped when the demonic blabberings started screaming in my ears

What do you mean they only sprinkle in a few good songs
pikapikapikapikachu
ryc ofc they would do that
he doesn’t like every song
bruh
hurb
you’re just built different
Sully
I just realized lmfao
i once liked all of an artists songs but i aged out of that
Aged out of it...
now i only like a third or something
Thonk
this artist has like 800 songs by the way
this is a good song
I approve

Well i can see why many of them are bad then
none of them are bad smh
check out this one
literally windows 7 default pics
penguins go hard
That one is good
That's even better
I just stole an Internet meme for my pfp
so unoriginal
I innovate
you mean moth did?
i was expecting this to be a screenshot from my playlist of cringe album covers
it's from the song you recced lol
ok we got one
hidden gem 😭
what about song length
I think if your song is < 3 minutes long it's already slightly on the bad side
Thonk

quants wtf
Theorem: If $X$ be the set that satisfies Peano's axioms, then for all $x \in X, S(x)\neq x$.
\
Proof: Construct $A\subseteq X$ as $A\coloneqq {x\in X\mid S(x)\neq x}$.
Obviously $S(0) = 1 \neq 0$ and so $0\in A$. Now, for any $x\in A$, notice that both $x,S(x)\in X\setminus {0}$ and since $S$ is injective, it follows that $S(x)\neq S(S(x))$ which means $S(x)\in A$ and this completes the proof because we have shown that $A = X$. $\blacksquare$
some of those haven't even had 1k plays
pikapikapikapikachu

yeah someone reposted that one
i do it right?
listen to that one it’s pretty good
waaat
So underground....

my average song lengths
Half liter... Ugh
sully
i got #❓how-to-get-help ed
14 minutes
53 seconds
I have a favorite song that's like 20 minutes
that's Dire Strait's Telegraph Road
Shotgun it
And ofc i like many symphonies which are like 50 minutes
At the airport
My longest usual songs are 16 but once I listened to a 59 minute one
average song length on the playlist i sent was 2:38
seems about right
Jeez
Just be sneaky about it

I started the caretaker one
Aren’t rap songs usually short
But i didn't finish it
oh this should be good
That whole album is 6 hours
sometimes yes sometimes no
some artists' whole discography isn't 59 minutes
I only got like 30 minutes in
It already had started to get sort of weird by that point
old school rap has a lot of longer songs i think?
Im curious but i want to find a time to listen it through
but newer style stuff is usually under 3 minutes
What album are you listening to?
ryc should listen to everywhere at the end of time while drunk
surely that will work out
Put it on and head to the gym. Nothing is gonna give you a pump like those dementia jammies
I just computed that over my 3168 songs the average length happens to be precisely 4.09 minutes
what’s that
I can't even see the word without hearing tahani calling herself and chidi "sophisticates"
I blame you ryc
Idk if i could exercise to that
no it’s the caretaker

darq likes 20s ballroom music
anyone wanna attend my exams for me? dw i won't pay you any money so we won't violate any server rules
And the part past the airport security at this airport sucks big time
🫂
Honestly sitting through the 20s ballroom music was kind of awful
anyone wanna do my exams for me? i literally just don’t feel like doing them i’m lazy
it got a sort of nostaligic feel to it
even tho I was born in the 2000s
Usually 🤨 how often do you fly
Boring
i wonder if i could study while listening to this
A few times a year for conferences
The airport im in is the ajaccio airport in corsica
Which i have flown out of once
are you going back to nyc, ryc?
And i went through security way too early last time
Hopefully this time wont be way too late... Lol
No to Paris for 5 days and then london for 5 days
Good timing
Joining the riots
Idk im pretty exhausted after this conference
And i didn't get much work done
We'll see
Been having a good time so far but going to be on my own again is stressful
Also don't have accomodations in london yet... Better figure that out
Did you remember to pack your spare pitchfork
Tsa confiscated it. Should have checked my bag

I really need some help in deciding my degree course, i was wondering if anyone could differentiate/explain both pure maths and maths with stats degrees regarding what stuff you learn and in how depth it all becomes.

Twitter implosion when
hate to say it, but the network effect + the fact that people are still talking about it so often since saying this kind of thing for a while now tells me not any time soon
Between this, Reddit API changes, Sub implosion and Google slowing depreciating Android apps to close source Android if there ever was a "late stage capitalism era" it's already upon us.
first I'm hearing about this android thing, interesting I'll have to check this out more
I wonder to what extent they are legally able to do that kind of thing considering android is built off linux

So far they have only deprecated the dialer and messaging apps I think, wonder how far this will go on

Anyone believe true randomness is real?
wdym by true randomness ?
Know the term psuedorandom?
what's ur goal ? I study physics
The idea of causation seems counter to what the ideal of randomness
Are wave function collapses truly random?
collapse is just a picture which is not a real picture
quantum mechanics is not descreptive , it's predictive
just wanted to see if anyone had the opinion of hidden variables.
in classical physics or quantum mech ?
either, I've heard more the qm side tho
@rich kernel bro are u good at calculus
hidden variables are trying to create a "realistic" picture from quantum mechanics. it has some benefits but some problems too, for example hidden variables theory is not good at relativistic formalism
and many other things
I'd need to pull up some note from an old math class to answer your q in #calculus, but did you try the help channel?
uhh not yet
@rich kernel r u here to discuss ?
yeah, one sec
writing an essay ?
I've heard that hidden variables is dismissed because the test for qm was a definitive proof, but I've yet to tackle the proof
just organizing my thoughts
no, it's not dismissed completely, still people working on it
hi
do you think anything could explain a hidden variable?
hi?
yes, actually some projects like arrival time argument shows that hidden variables and standard formalism have different sights to the arrival time argument
people are trying to create a time operator in quantum mechanics
recommend any resources to get caught up in this type of science if I don't plan to go heavy into physics?
I graduated with a math degree, I only took physics covering projectile motion, light, and electricity , never dived deeply into quantum mechanics.
though I am interested the developments of quantum computers and how qm may impact randomness
most of the quantum mechanics is linear algebra
I'm not good at quantum information
but there r many non academic books which dives in deep concepts and it's great to read
take a look at : the quantum challenge
written by : greenstein
I took applied linear algebra, hopefully I can read with understanding
yea, most of the quatnum mechanics is writing a eigen value and eigen vector equation and solve it, things are done in hilbert space and so on
I'll check it out, thx
How ever!
Most of the academic text books don’t talk much about mysteries
mysteries?
rigged stuff
Meaning of rigged ?
manipulated
rigged as in rigged Hilbert space
wouldn't be surpised if rigged meant something specific in advanced math
Is QM empirical (and experimental) or is it totally theoretical, also isn't theoretical physics motivated by some experiments ?
who cares man
most ppl talking about QM are either geniuses or quacks
back to randomness, my particular interest would be in simulation, I wonder if indeterminancy would pose issues if we want advanced simulations, but I suppose I need to dig beyond the surface level understanding of the mechanics to make a solid opinion @bronze jetty
It’s both
hmm isn't the theoretical part motivated by some experiments ?
they made it in the first place because no other theory could explain observations at a higher accuracy
How did Schrödinger come up with the Schrödinger equation?
they were alive
hmm that makes sense
the guy who invented thought it was BS
Indeterminacy in classical physics comes comes from lack of knowledge and also complexity of systems like statistical mech
But in quantum mechanics indeterminacy comes from nature of the system
they did everything they can to disprove it
Started with planck isn't it ?
He was measuring the size of his wiener
That's how he discovered the planck constant
Yeah you could see Planck and Einstein as the start
it was motivated by dual nature of light , photoelectric effect & interference
Then came dual nature of matter
But the dual nature of light was argued about during Newton's time
Dude this is not true
I hope one day there is a theory underneath QM where indeterminacy comes from complexity
How so?
Don't you just hate it when the structure of reality is probabilistic
How do you feel about Bohmian mechanics then
idk that I'm just an undergrad
Oh it's an interpretation of quantum mechanics that is deterministic
QM is nice weed talk
People were trying to describe atomic structure and black body radiation
sounds good
But it violates locality, so stuff arbitrarily far away can influence other stuff instantaneously
Well we can say it was motivated by atomic spectra and defining the atomic structure ? rather than dual nature then
Which is a no-go for a lot of folks
I don't see how this contradicts the earlier statement
There is not a dual nature
teleportation is still preferable over indeterminacy imo
wdym ?
I mean there is not a real wave swinging around
Wave is just a concept to describe what we observe
This seems like arguing about semantics to me
To me dual nature just means it behaves in some contexts like we would classically expect a wave to behave and in some contexts like we would classically expect a particle to behave
Much of Physics is that
some numerical feature is waving, nothing's physically waving in a medium
Just a claim about experimental results
Exactly
Wave is a creature which just fits in wave equation (:
Sound wave
Water wave
Light wave
Quantum wave function
Which one of these are like each other ?
Although all of them are waves ?
We call them wave because they obey mathematical laws
Ya
Important point to remember is that
In quantum mechanics
Don’t try to describe anything
Just calculate to predict the possible results
Quantum mechanics is highly related to observer
I mean they are also all fairly like each other
How ever, I hope a better theory will describe some strange stuff in QM
Like for example they all have interference patterns
There is a physical interpretation to the mathematics and I think not trying to give it is misguided
It’s not always like that
For example:
Tell me the physical interpretation of a spin of electron ?
The physical interpretation is that it gives off a certain magnetic moment
Physicist are dying to give a physical interpretation for state vector !
It’s as simple as u think dude
I wish it was easy like this but it’s not
Problem is difference in our classical sight and predictive picture of QM
Pardon me?
You said there's a difference in that QM is more predictive in this situation
I'm wondering what the relevant discrepancy in prediction is
Earnest question
Problem of understanding qm
