One way would be fetching the releases using the Github API. This API returns a JSON response that includes download links. You could use the tag name as the version number and compare that to your application's current number. If the latest version is greater, than that's a good sign you have an update available. All of this (from fetching the update to downloading it) can be done using any HTTP library, such as requests.
