What about with a degree apprenticeship? They also extremely popular.
do u mean a apprenticeship combined with a degree?
sure its a degree after all 😄
Considering its 2025 already and I graduate from college in 2026 lol.
but i wouldnt say puts u upfront a degree only applicant
So what would you suggest to me?
which field u want to apply for (pharma, tech, etc.)
A field that relates to programming or something.
Your best bet is to get an internship in 2025
u should have somewhat experience in the field u want to apply to given an internship or project work of any kind related to that field
but internships are great to get in touch with hiring manager
Well I did self learned python and created a full python Game so...
so u want to be a game dev?
Yes I see basically work experience
Not really I just love to study and explore many fields in the computing world.
cause python game is somewhat a niche
You mean its not that great for creating games?
i do, and to my knowledge its in no means state of the art, making the experience in it somewhat redundant
ok
so u should check which jobs might be suitable for u good paying jobs where u can utilise ur python (basics?) would be
Junior Data Engineer
Junior Data Scientist
Junior Prompt Engineer (yes that seems to be a job)
Do all these Junior jobs require you to have a A level?
Junior Prompt Engineer (yes that seems to be a job)
oh no
big adventage for u would then be to check out SQL and learn basics as its the standard
degree not A-level
but u really should focus on what u want to do rather than just apply for internships/jobs
Well at the end of my journey whenever I get there hopefully I want to become a really good programmer.
thats good but u should think about what u want to do for the next 40 years
cause programming is a super wide area, and ull never cover every aspect of it
Yes as technology is advancing every day, its important to keep up to date.
true but not what i meant, u should check what u want to do, whether its statistic, genAI, data science, developing, etc.
ok
for example i have a natural science related background and did not study computer science, however my job now is data analytics/science
does github sponsor devs what are the odds of me being sponsored for github sponsors ?
I have ongoing PRs in freecodecamp, bluesky, memeos and a some other repos ?
Hello everyone, I hope everyone is well.
I have almost 4 years of experience developing Embedded Software with C. In this time I have used a lot of Python for creating scripts for processing and visualizing data from my devices. At the moment I want to do a career transition to some Python Backend position. I have already experience with git, SCRUM, CI/CD and have studied about Flask, Rest APIs, SQLite, PostgreSQL, Docker and Kubernetes.
What would be your recommendation for my next step in landing a Python position?
Probably filling out an application or 2
I think your best bet is to play the numbers game and apply for as many positions as possible on LinkedIn Jobs and Indeed.
Heyy I just started learning python as a hobby and I'm not entirely sure if I want to make it into my career. I'm just really into knowing how computers work and such. What are some career options if I choose to make it into one? I really like data stuff
Hello
There are many careers which require python expertise. If you like programming, you should look into pursuing a degree in Computer Science
Hmm yeah I'll look into it. I need to finish some stuff first so it'll probably take a year or two even. I just find computers really fascinating and I would love to do some engineering too
Computer Engineering would also be a good option. How much (formal) education do you have currently?
I'm working on finishing my basic qualification on tourism and I'm 20. (And no it's not really interesting just customer service. I'm already almost finished and it would be a total waste to abandon it) I really like astronomy too so I was thinking I could include that somehow! I only started being interested in scientific topics like a year ago and I wasnt the best at school due to horrible neglect at home. I was always interested though! Also dont worry I'm in a much better mental state right now
I have being applying to a bunch of job positions, tailoring my CV to each one, but still all responses are negative. I want to improve my portfolio to increase my chances, but maybe there is something else I am missing.
I have a bachelor and master in Control and Automation Engineering. Am I missing some Computer Science related certificates?
You can share your anonymized resume here for review. Hard to give advice without knowing what you're sending
I have found work by using Linkedin's "Easy Apply" button and then mass applying for jobs. It's a numbers game, in my belief. Changing your resume to apply for each position takes to much time and misses out on the chances your resume lands on the hiring managers desk at exactly the write time. As soon as a job is posted its only a few hours before there are hundreds of applicants, that's why I use the "Numbers Game" approach in mass applying for jobs.
Again, this is only my opinion but I have found that by the time I apply for between 100-150 jobs I will have had up to a half dozen interviews and will have an offer letter in my inbox.
Agree, altho I'd add; instead of tailoring for 'each' job, you could prepare version of resume that emphasize different skills depending on the job.
That actually a really good idea.
Hi, I’m Endri, I started doing some python projects, and I’m looking for some intern job, if anyone is interested please let me know?
we don't really do recruiting here, you will have better luck looking on linkedin
Okay, sorry
Hi, we don't allow ads here. Your post has been removed. You can DM modmail for further information.

Hope everyone has had an amazing day <3
Hi guys, I need some guidance & suggestions.
I'm into the field of MLas well into DL. My goal is to be into these fields & create models. But I wonder in astronomy how ML works? Which expertise should I have in ML for space projects?
Would like an expert person guidance who have the proper knowledge. Thanks
.
Hi BillyBobby, I am not able to share a pdf, but here are the 2 pages from my Resume. This model that I am using is recommended for the German market.
Given that this question is a bit specialized, I'd recommend looking on places like LinkedIn where you better find people with relevant experience. You might even look for academic papers and reach out to authors
I have no experience in German resumes, but for 3 years experience, I'd expect a one page resume. The spacing and bullets are verbose / sparse on information. The summary paragraph doesn't really say much, I'd keep maybe the first sentence and that's it. If you're looking for an embedded job, then re-order your experience bullets to emphasize that first: in the most recent experience, put the firmware bullet first. And, say more. All you said is 'led the firmware development': what about it?
Thanks for the feedback.
In my case, I have experience with Firmware, but I want a new role as Beckend with Python (maybe Web-dev). Therefore, I have not that much relevant professional exp, only some data gathering and visualization with pandas and matplotlib.
Do I keep my FW exp in the CV to show I know about programming or should I keep only python related experience?
Your summary mentions experienced in Embedded first, which suggested to me that that's what you were looking for. People don't read the entire resume at first or the middle of a long paragraph where it says what you want to transition into.
Tbh, I don't think the summary adds much value. They're useful as a one sentence to say anything that's not obvious from the resume, like relocation or specific industries. You could prepare different versions for different jobs tho.
How do you guys coach junior colleagues? I find that really hard sometimes. I like pair programming in principle but it's very challenging with strict deadlines. It ends up becoming me implementing it and them not really getting it. Plus I end up losing time to do my own tasks.
The obvious answer is "assign them easier tasks and review what they do" but we're all technically "owners" of different processes so we don't directly work on the same thing together if that makes sense?
Most of my coaching is in code reviews, tbh. Give them tasks, figure out what they can handle on their own, and make time for a few mid-day conversations to make sure they're not stuck / answer qs.
Coaching juniors does take time away and does make you less productive in the short term. You may need to reasses your processes to allocate time towards this.
The problem is, I'm not in a position to review them or their code. They're fully responsible for their part. All I can do is respond to ad hoc questions / give advice.
That makes it difficult for sure, they have to be willing to come to you and ask questions.
And luckily they do. What I want to do is get the most out of the times they ask questions so they grow as fast as they could (given the strange setup)
Other way to mentor is to lead by example. Takes more effort tho, but showing them what you're doing and including them in your thought process perhaps?
It ends up becoming me implementing it and them not really getting it
Don't do this
You say theyre fully responsible for their code but not really if you complete it for them
With the separated ownership needs to also come accountability. Like old man said, you shouldn't feel the need to implement it yourself if it's something the junior guy already committed to doing. You don't need to say "hey get this done or i'm reporting you", but you could be persistent at offering your help or advice. Or maybe don't even ask "is there anything you need from me?" but something more like "hey can we schedule some time tomorrow to go over your progress on X?"
"assign them easier tasks and review what they do"
Also i get this logic but i've also had a lot of success assigning people less easy tasks to really challenge them. Sometimes they excel, sometimes they fall short, but at least they learned something
Fully agree with this too. If you really want to be a mentor, it's gonna take a significant chunk of your time
Can I create an image processing project using Django?
This is #career-advice . YOu can ask in #python-discussion or create a help channel
Hello guys, how are you? I'm a developer in Brazil, and I'm looking for job opportunities abroad to work as a junior Python developer. What are the best strategies to find a job like that?
I don’t need to, but I want them to not fail their responsibilities
You taking over their responsibilites is still them failing their responsibilities
That’s very true, but essentially: my idea is that over time they get better and better and they don’t need my help to complete tasks. I don’t want to make them depend on me either
Hello folks was wondering where you guys had the most luck/success in the job hunt process. I have a bachelors in Data Science with internship experince. Sound knowledge of SQL Python r etc... Dont care to bore you just looking for tips I may have overlooked!
what have you done so far to hunt for jobs?
why do you ask?
nothing special
just want to know
want to know what? whether devops people exist?
what would you ask if someone said yes
yes
Because i am working as Desktop support engineer
now looking for an DevOps engineer role
just need some tips from that person if any DevOps engineer exist here
do you have career related questions for devops engineers?
yes i have
so ask them here
Actually i have not industrial level project handons
but i have learned DevOps tools with my self study
and also complete around 15+ handon projects on AWS
i want to know is this sufficient for me to get into job ?
does anyone have any idea regarding that ?
Can someone please suggest the best project management tool, especially for a game development team?
Options include Bitrix24, Trello, or any others you recommend?
You won't find out without applying to jobs first. Sounds like you have some good experience with DevOps tools already, so i would say go for it
There is a hole inside that one
If u are looking for it
YOu talking about my nose?
YES 😂
Its so funny i love it
you're taking away some of their learning process though.
@uneven sentinel your message was removed for containing recruitment. Please read the #rules that you agreed to when you joined the server.
Whats up homies
so what do you guys recommend?
apperantly entry level IT jobs are out of question for me...
Not that I don't want the job. I had a great interview but they were worried I wouldnt be able to use my skills... Answering phones and helping customers with their computer problems might be too little for me I guess?
well, they were worried you'd quit when something more in line with your education experience came up. You may have been able to reassure them that you wouldn't, but it was probably a pretty reasonable concern for them to have
Yeah I assured them but it didnt work @summer roost
what kind of jobs would you recommend for me
I don't really know anything about data science. It's far outside of my area of expertise
I think I wouldnt even have had the interview on the first place. The HR set me up
so maybe they just interviewed me for courtesy lol
and gave me an honest feedback
it was a great interview tho. We all had fun. It was just I couldn't convince them 😦
it's pretty unlikely that they would have spent the time to interview you if they knew in advance that they didn't want to hire you
They asked what kind of stuff I was doing during my master and they went like wow thats amazing
yeah but the recruiter and hr are different lol
The interviewer said HR sent them all sorts of people looking for this position
I've never seen a place where hiring is so dysfunctional that someone without any subject matter expertise decides who will be interviewed
I think they ended up hiring someone that worked as a receptionist at a dentist office
instead of me so I don't know how to feel
do you think thats normal?
a receptionist as an IT person
sure
Capturing ticket information & Triaging tickets
Level 1/Level 2 Support
Setting customer expectations for ticket response times
Resolving and/or escalating reactive tickets (onsite or remote)
Ensuring customer satisfaction
Following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and updating SOPs as needed
Provide technical assistance with computer hardware and software
Resolve issues for clients via phone, in person, or electronically```
I had an IT job once, and my job before that was working on a factory floor 🤷♂️
this was the job description
does not sound like a DS job
well I am trying to get into a tech field @whole spindle
I'd just assume that whoever got the job had the relevant skills, and seemed like a better candidate to the interviewers
Well they had a 90 day training period so
huh. that sounds like a very long training period to me
is python a great way to learn analytics? I just wanted to learn python for the purpose of data analyses, research, and to learn general analytics. If you have some comments, feedbacks or ideas I am happy to have conversations
hopw you get it mate
ok everyone can you all be honest to me
i did 1 year of cs and already 20k in debt but soon if i finish i would be 100k in debt and that guy jigly hasnt found a job in a year im just scared and wanna know is it worth it?
college is not a guarantee to a job. It increases your chances but its not a gurantee @errant thicket
maybe you weren't here for it but we just had a significant discussion about how jiggly didn't study cs
I have masters in CS @white relic I did CS
what was the thing where you learned half what a cs major would have?
CS in AI and ML specialization which is what he wants to study as well
i asked if you had an CS / SWE degree and you said no before? wut
Yeah my masters in CS but its ML, AI focus so I didnt do any software engineering @harsh river
all the courses I took except DSA were AI courses
you keep focusing on the word "software engineering". many companies will treat both degrees as roughly the same.
yeah but they probably had programming courses in their CS
I didnt have any of those in my CS masters except python programming and that was not even hard python programming
ok, just sounds like you're mentally blocking and limiting yourself then.
not mentally I mean you can see the courses I took in my CS masters
yes, mentally, every time someone asks you something you say " i'm a Data Scientist"!!!! i'm not a Software Engineer!!!!
i dind't take SWE!!! people probably took more SWE / programming courses even though they have the exact same degree as me!!!!
Yeah because its true tho. If someone asks me what encapsulation is I dont know what that is
nah.
at some point you must take responsibility.
it's never your fault is it? it's always the interviewers, it's always you being too overqualified, it's always "not what my degree is for", i'm not a coder, i'm a DS, it's always that. maybe take a pause and look at yourself.
first of all they told me I was overqualified
i do, and i have a job in a very hard field, without a college degree
without a CS / SWE / DS degree.
your degrees alone would have me discarded if both our resumes were put side by side.
They literally told me I wouldnt be using my skills and bored in this position
tbh, I don't think this conversation is going to head in a productive direction. Just trying to save everyone some grief.
You can be overqualified for a position
this conversation repeats on a clock every 2-3 months.
It takes two to tango
I dont need to take a pause and look at myself when I only get 2 -3 interviews a year.
other people were dancing the tango before i joined
That signals something about jobs not about my attitude
i'll go dance some bachata / salsa instead, peace
if you never take responsibility then you're going to have a hard time, just like you've been.
tough advice but true, people have been trying to convey that same sentiment in much nicer ways every time you bring this up.
well I only had 3 interviews and you are telling me its my fault
tells me to take responsiblity
I guess I shouldnt have studied in college then
I literally asked someone else why I didnt get the IT job. They said by just looking at my resume that I was overqualified
dang this a tuff convo to read but i’ll pray on getting a cs job
that noone would want to hire someone that could quit in 6 months when they get offered a better job
that’s really cool you got a job without a degree
focus on your projects, practice, post them on your github, show your effort and dedication and you'll be fine, employers love demonstrable skills.
The point I was trying to make which I think still holds is that this experience isn't typical. most people with a CS degree would at some point have taken some programming classes, and at least not be dealing with this specific kind of struggle that jigglypuff finds themself in, so I wouldn't put too much weight on that anecdotal evidence.
I took programming classes too
I took Python and thats it
Its not about programming courses
what makes difference is the path you choose
i see ok well i’m not gonna focus on ai ill do cs regular one jiggly stories makes me quite sad
You’ve said multiple times that you haven’t, what?
ok thanks
I took Python
But it wasnt that deep like you learn in some cases. I dont know anything about OOP for example
OOP isn't deep, though, it's basics
we didnt learn that in our Python course
Whatever it's about, I'm quite puzzled by your experience, because you seem to have a quite unusual education, so I'm trying to encourage not generalizing it too much.
Maybe I'm wrong.
Do you remember this conversation from last year? #python-discussion message
I do
holy crap i ain’t doing ai nvm then
well - somehow you've managed to finish an MS CS without learning a lot of the basics that someone with a BS CS has. You're treating object-oriented programming as though it's an advanced concept, but it's table stakes. It's basic stuff that's required to understand how to use other people's code
or I dont develop application
it’s ok jiggly your in my prayers
yeah because my undergrad was in BS DS @summer roost
and you will find a job soon keep believing mate 🫡
now if I focused on this area in my masters:
Programming Languages and Environments
CS 602
Java Programming
CS 635
Computer Programming Languages
CS/DS 636
Data Analytics with R Program
CS 643
Cloud Computing
CS 750
High Performance Computing
CS 756
Mobile Computing and Sensor Networks
it would be very tough for me because they have a lot of prereqs lol
mate i have an idea you should apply for jobs all over the us
The CS masters have very wide expertise of areas @summer roost
CS 670
Artificial Intelligence
CS/DS 675
Machine Learning
DS 669
Reinforcement Learning
CS/DS 677
Deep Learning
DS 680
Natural Language Processing
CS 631
Data Management System Design
CS 610
Data Structures and Algorithms
CS 630
Operating System Design
These are the courses I took in my grad CS masters @summer roost
so it was a lot like courses I took during my undergrad
DMSD, ML, AI I took those in my undergrad too
my advisor told me not to go through Programming and Algorithm path since they have a lot of prereqs
https://www.coursera.org/specializations/python-3-programming I am taking this course to help me a bit
so far its been very easy tho lol
Im doing my thesis next semester by the way
Its on GNNs. My professor and I will work on colon cancer detection from histology images using GNNs
good mate well i hope everything goes well for you
thanks
Im excited for my thesis at least @errant thicket Im hoping to get some leverage by having a published thesis
this is the wrong channel my friend
ah which channel?
@sand patio can you remove this lol
billy really wrong channel
or @fringe sphinx if you are available
go to python help
ok
go to #1035199133436354600 I guess
bu you should study AI @errant thicket you may not learn what a CS person learns but you will get a good sense of python coding and a lot of mathematics
i might mate but not to be rude your life scared me and i will continue to just do bs in cs
ML/AI is more about mathematics than anything else... You need to know how to code for sure but it won't be like a full stack developer coding. You need to know how to use pandas, scikitlearn, pytorch and numpy, tensorflow and a lot of other packages
you will work with packages than anything else really lol. Dont take my life as a grain of salt
The biggest issue I have is not my education but the fact that i live in a town with 35K population
@errant thicket Im sure if I lived in a big city it would be much more different
ahhh i see ok
Recruiters usually give a priority to people that live in the area where the job is
Because of logistics and everything. You need to find a place to live, living expenses and bla bla. It can be a tough situation for someone that lives miles away from the job @errant thicket I am pretty sure thats my biggest obstacle
I didnt wanna accept that fact but thats the most likely case. I can tell it cuz of the lack of callbacks I get from jobs I apply to lol. It would be much different if I lived in VA/DC area hahahaha
and remote jobs are getting slimmer and slimmer (I am not sure why tho)
Do you have any experience with government contractors? @fringe sphinx
I have been in touch with this company and they wanna hire me for sure but they are waiting for some sort of grant I guess?
I interviewed them 2 times hahaha
Looks like by the end of the month you should be fine
looking for python help at an affordable price. Is there a job board?
This server isn't the place to look; you'll have to use the job board in the description of this channel (which links to an external site)
this sets off some scam alarms for me... I'd suggest being careful with these people. It's extremely weird to see an American company say "11 December" instead of "the 11th of December" or "December 11th". There's some other weird things in there, but that one seems really obvious to me
It’s not a scam at all. I interviewed them face to face
hm. ok
I met the company’s CEO too.
googling "MCICOM" just finds me https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_Installations_Command - and that doesn't sound like what this is letter is talking about
Yeah it’s a Marine corp job
ok
This was an earlier email in November
@summer roost
I had to redo my resume because it had to be in a specific format
I’ve been in touch with them since September hahahaha
that still feels very scammy to me, I don't know what else to say
Thank you!
if it isn't a scam, they should really be hiring someone to do their candidate communications, heh
It’s a small business company
https://www.reedcharters.com here is their website @summer roost
can you point me to the description please?
https://www.linkedin.com/in/0johnmreed0 also the CEO I interviewed with
😄
Have you guys worked with government positions before?
I think this is a double edged sword. on the one hand, it does mean that there's fewer opportunities available. On the other hand, it also means that there's significantly less competition for roles
IT is a common stepping point into greater roles like SWE / CS etc
that makes sense to me. DS is quite specialized work, I'd expect it to be centralized in population centers
Yeah but not all of them. The one I applied to was very basic @harsh river
basically answering calls lol
more like a call center IT
I would like to work for a better IT company where you have greater opportunities
i'm speaking generally.
I just wanted that IT job because it paid 2 dollars more than my current job xD
18 vs 20 dollars an hour
however this government DS job pays 45 dollars an hour
best of luck
Its taking so long tho
I signed a letter of intent with them. Does that make me unhireable by other companies?
just wondering
depends on the exact wording of the letter of intent.
okay
support of the above-referenced contract upon the award of such by the Government. I certify that I have been apprised of the requirements of the position for MCICOM Professional Services Support and am committing exclusively. I confirm that I meet or exceed the requisite skills, qualifications and experience necessary for this role. I also authorize this Letter of Intent to be included in the proposal response in the proposal response.```
here
committing exclusively
exactly.
committing exclusively.
no
it doesn;t make you unhireable, it just means you've commited to them for now.
okay gotcha 😄
yes, you're OK, no, you haven't actually committed to anything (and the fact that they're trying to make you think you have also feels scammy)
Im sure they are not a scam company. Ive seen tons of posts on their Linkedin page
This isn't something that would be enforceable as a contract (there's no consideration)
'
it's also not something that's enforceable as a non-compete agreement
okay thats what I wanted to know
it seems very much like they're trying to trick you, which is a weird thing for a company that wants you to work for them to do
They didnt say anything about me appyling to other jobs
<@&831776746206265384> ...
they just wanted to me to sign that so they would know Im interested in the position
cuz HR contacts me once a month and asks if Im looking for other jobs or not
I just didnt know if LOI made me unhirable thats it 😄
And if I'm right that it is a scam, I bet that it works by stringing you along until you finally tell them that you are looking for other jobs, and then telling you that you've broken your contract with them and they'll sue you unless you pay them $1000 for the inconvenience, or something like that
nah lol
in any event, the answer is no, you're not unhirable, you can't enter a contract with someone where they give you no money and in exchange you're not allowed to work for someone else
They already know I am working at my current position
Ive seen scammy jobs tho on LinkedIn
its easy to detect them (they spoof company emails a lot)
I always check the company emails to see if they actually belong to the company
https://www.reedcharters.com/projects they seem legit to me lol
in any event, the best advice is that, if you're ever unsure what you are and are not legally allowed to do with respect to a contract that you have entered or are thinking about entering, you should talk to a lawyer
okay 😄 Ive never done a contract job before
all the more reason to check with a lawyer if something seems hinky to you
my friend does contract jobs I should ask him too
Is your friend a contract lawyer?
just post the anonymized CV
Help me understand what I'm looking at. What is this ranking used for?
Uni preferences
Is this a system where your preference is considered in whether you get accepted or not?
That's not how it works in the US.
it's a scholarship
you choose what you're interested in and you get the chance of getting accepted into one
ah
without having any information about how the scholarship is distributed, I'm not sure I can comment on whether the arrangement is good or bad.
I'll ask a question, though - your options 1 and 2 seem kind of at odds with the rest. It's totally normal and fine to have a variety of interests and spread a wide net, I'm just wondering if you have considered any other related disciplines, or if there's a specific reason for maritime transportation and automotive engineering.
My main goal was Marine Operations Engingeering but it required a certain exam that I dont have right now so I chose that instead since I did a little research and they're close enough
for the automotive part, I'm not sure why I added it I just did lol
I'm more into computer engineering because I'm interested in coding and general and mostly cybersecurity
ah ok
I might expect the automotive one to be lower on the list then
so for that I chose AI, Software and Computer engineering
Sounds good, I'll do that
I mean, its your preference list, I'm not trying to say you're wrong, just to understand it a little better
I used to be interested in nuclear engineering but that didn't work out for me
Yep, I totally get it, and what you said makes sense
Yeah that requires multiple exams that I dont have too but I'm not interested in it anws so its kinda fine for me
right now I’m 16 and am looking into several career branches for my future, notably in finance or tech. At what age did you guys start to learn coding. Languages like python and etc?
I did computer engineering. There's a lot of flexibility to that, if you wanted to try to get into automotive field, or adjacent stuff like marine electronics, radar, avionics, etc. it could even be better than CS. Worth thinking about, maybe.
AI and DS are also big right now, obviously.
That's a fine age to start learning, if you're interested. Programming is a skill that takes time to get good at, so a little learning over a long time is better than trying to grind it out.
Noted, I'll do a research about each and figure it out, thank you
2-column resumes are fairly divisive. I don't love this one, doesn't make very good use of space, but with your level of experience maybe it doesn't matter much.
I don't believe in paragraphs. Instead of having prose descriptions of what you did, try to bulletize it and emphasize more what skills you practiced, specific features you added, what the most salient technologies you used, etc. Put the most important words first.
Resume advice can vary by location; it may help to share your country / where you are looking for jobs.
2-column resumes are fairly divisive
Yes opinions on this are very split
Soooo, talking about career I'm lost RN, what are you guys doing
\twocolumn resume 🔥
There's also a wide range of what people mean by "two column". The german style, from what i can see, either uses personal info in the margin or categories. This is different than the two columns where someone jams a lot of information into both columns.
(in other words: there's "good" two columns and "bad" two columns)
My right column's like a third of the width, and it just has a list of skills and frameworks or whatever.
Then again i haven't used my resume in like 7 years. Might be time for a redesign
Hey
🧑🌾 hay
Can anybody roast or review my resume? I'm not getting any remote jobs, even though I have around 2 years of remote job experience.
You may feel free to post it here, with personal information redacted
This is career channel on a Python server
Those are Turkish colleges
The college list someone posted.
This one… I feel like Dokuz Eylül University is a great option
Search for together c/c++
for what ask here
check rules i dont think they allow it here and why don't u consider upwork
so you are not actually hiring? just looking for developers who wish to contribute?
donei deleted them
I'm an electronics researcher but I use Python in my job
may I ask where are you from?
I live in Florida
Oh, okay
How long as a programmer did it take to get good at dsa?
How often should I spend a day if I wanna get good at it in a year?
For what purpose are you trying to get better at DSA?
it's not important to get "good at dsa". dsa (or at least the algorithm part) is mostly about coming up with efficient solutions to combinatorial optimization problems, but the overwhelming majority of things you'd be asked to code in real life are not those.
is ML and DL field worth it right now? or should i study AI in general right now?
ML/DL is a subset of AI, and it's the only subset that is currently relevant.
it's also the most degree-requiring field within CS, so if you want to get into it, you should be open to getting a masters.
I wanna be a good programmer I guess. Get a job in robotics
then focus on robotics, not DSA
Robotics require programming skill
yes, but DSA isn't the be-all-end-all of programming.
So I should be learning libraries then.
the important thing is that you learn sensible ways to decompose a problem.
will it be relevant for maybe like 5 years later?
Don't I need dsa for that?
No one has a crystal ball, but I'm pretty sure ML is going to be around for a while.
we're at a high point in a hype cycle, though.
you might get asked DSA questions in an interview because all CS students take a DSA course. not because it's important.
I'm an eletrical engineer. But I want to go Into robotics
i think ML will be really in need later in the future as people are focusing on genAI right now
though its just my opinion
guys can ai replace coding ? i wanna give time to it but im afraid its gonna go in vain
No, we will have coders for quite a bit. Pay will go down though because cs is so popular now
oh alright
no, at least not entirely
generative AI depends on ML.
aren't they different? genAI generates the most accurate information while ML collects data
Delete that sentence from your brain permanently.
oh yeah im fkin trippin genAI gave accurate info because ML collects data
I dont think thats how anything works
No.
Generative AI is just when you have a model that generates content, like text or images. the concept of truthfulness doesn't necessarily even apply.
ML doesn't "collect" data. it's when a model is trained on the kind of data that will be available to it when you actually use it. the model doesn't necessarily save the data, and definitely isn't involved in collecting it.
i think you have deleted my brain temporarily
Hey, I'm thinking of learning C++ after joining college and diving into DSA problems from there. Since I already know Python, I was thinking of using it to build projects and work on AI/ML in parallel.
Anyone else here made a similar transition or have thoughts on this approach?
I like this answer: https://youtube.com/shorts/qfxzL17JmOQ?feature=shared
Many people confuse coding with programming. In this video, Leslie Lamport explain the difference between both.

Alright
Part of the point being: even if we have better tools to help with writing code, we still need to make higher level decisions
Morning y'all! i start school in my software engineering degree soon and i just wanted to know hows does this degree help me dive into a career moving forward. Thank you in advance y'all.
hey is there anyway I could get any jobs in tech without a degree? such as help desk or something any idea?
Can anyone suggest some Data Analyst projects for resum?!?
any of u work on fivver upwork or any freelancing platforms
macdonalds
bro get away with that troll stuff
ok mb but no one going to give job without u providing them value.. theres no idea to get jobs like help desk
bro you don’t know what your talking about i bet there is some way to get in tech without a degree if you don’t know i dont need your reply simple as that
ok good luck finding a help desk like job
Having a degree will just make finding the job faster in my opinion
mate that’s not my question i know that
hey is there anyway I could get any jobs in tech without a degree? such as help desk or something any idea? and i know you should get a degree but is there anyway without like the most simple tech job?
There are websites like these who help others and u can apply there
No idea of their requirements though
There are many jobs in tech besides programming. QA, Testing, Operations, Support, Help Desk, etc. Find companies that are near you and look at -all- of their jobs
yea so which one could i get without a degree?
You won't know until you read and apply.
Many of those fields can be entered without a degree, if a company is hiring for entry level
You've got to put the time in: research companies near you, read all of their jobs, see if you know anyone who knows anyone who works there, apply to ones you're interested in, etc
i see ok do you think it’s worth it? if i wanna get in tech?
As opposed to what? Doing nothing?
yea i am doing nothing now
Yes, doing something is better than doing nothing 🙂
true ok well i hope i get something
Why can't you go the normal way?
hello
i think they've said that they're scared to of the debt
Hey any ideas on where can i find potential cofounders ?
If you know what you need a cofounder for and why, you're probably in a better position to answer that than any of us
hey there, I want to get into Gen AI domain, from where do I start ? Is anyone has relevant experience, advice me.
Usually when you ask for advice, if you want any sort of helpful feedback you give a short summary of your background and experience
you should get a degree (probably a masters) that involves research in that domain.
I am a graduate student, and have 2 years of software developer experience but want to switch now.
you're currently a graduate student? do you have enough time left to make all your coursework about AI?
yeah, as I have just started it's my first term. I have like a year.
you should talk to your advisor and tell them that you want to go all-in on generative AI.
appreciate.
Hi guys, please where can I find content writing job
@worthy badge hi can you please answer your dm
sure man
anyone got any tips im 13 years old and just started
build things and explore what’s out there
how do i start
!res
The Resources page on our website contains a list of hand-selected learning resources that we regularly recommend to both beginners and experts.
what is the best guides out there
Pick a nice tutorial. There is no best one, just whichever one you enjoy, some ppl watch Yt, others read books, others course, and others just mess around and figure it out piece by piece
Then, experiment by writing simple things. Ask for suggestions in #python-discussion
Ask over in #python-discussion , I'm old.
how old are you?
My kids are in Uni
i'm a few years young
where are you from?
US
okay im from sweden

My bad. I saw now that i can't offer a paid work.
is probability theory part of discrete math?
Yes
so if i have discrete math on my resume, theres no need to mention probability theory right?
having discrete math alone is fine without mentioning probability theory within the coursework on my resume since discrete math encompasses probability theory within it right?
If you took the discrete math course that's required for your degree, they'll know that includes probability theory
They'll also know that you have to take that course. What's the point of listing it?
do you guys have a cs college degree or are in process of getting a degree? also at which college?
most of us who work in industry have degrees; is there a reason you need to know where we got them?
just curious on how good the colleges are that most people get their degrees and if it really makes a difference on the college you go to
"prestige" isn't very important for CS degrees. how you spend your time while you're getting the degree is much more important.
i guess so but there has to be some level to it. like people who went to MIT will have an easier time getting a job vs someone who went to community college no matter if the person spend double the time on cs
community colleges by definition do not issue bachelors degrees, which is what you need.
bruh ok then some low ranked no name school with 500 people enrolled
what matters is that the university is accredited. "degrees" from unaccredited institutions have no value.
well anyways what college did you go to
VCU
I started grad school at GMU and had such a profoundly horrible experience that I dropped out. I thought about taking them to court to get my money back.
damn maybe i wont go there then 💀
don't fuck with their CS department; they don't give a shit about you.
alr thanks
VT is probably fine if you're okay with living in the middle of nowhere.
yeah idrc about that. i just gotta get in
I'm applying this year too 😭
tech is in the middle of nowhere, but they have a nice campus, and you'll probably have fun there
lots of school spirit
yeah i visited
GMU is kind of dead in that regard, since it's a commuter school
tech also has some of the best campus dining in the country 👀
||and they know it's shit||
What difference does it make to you? Sure, go to the best school you have the opportunity and means to go to. But most people don't go to 'top schools' and they have fine careers regardless.
One of my best hires was from a no name school in a small state. He described the CS curriculum as 'terrible. Yet he was excellent and had a great career.
Community college is just a bridge to university, where you obtain the degree
Bunch of people with a 4.0 in a great school and can't get a job because their resume sucks 🤷♂️ I'm pretty sure employers mostly care about your personal projects and skills.
I'm taking discrete maths rn still haven't seen that
employers want to select the candidate who's most likely to succeed at the job. Someone having good projects on their github makes them appear more likely to succeed. Someone having a computer science degree makes them appear more likely to succeed. Someone having both appears more likely to succeed than someone having only one or the other
Agreed but I'm saying considering both have the degree, it's mostly gonna be about the rest of the resume
Do you guys ever find yourself in a situation where an incompetent coworker is impacting your work and the company at large, but they're favored for some reason so you're asked to keep your mouth shut or even lie/mislead other people at the company as to project results? Or that negative feedback of any kind needs to be kept to yourself, even if liability could be at play?
If so, is this like... a normal thing in every workplace?
Or are there workplaces where you're encouraged to speak up and address issues?
It isn't normal. But isn't uncommon either. The best thing you can do, is create a clear paper trail that expresses your concerns. And/or show that you are not at fault / impacted by others. Especially when there is liability in play. You should make it clear enough that you are safe.
-# And if that isn't possible, and the liability is large enough (and impacting you,) you might have to whistleblow. But it doesn't sound like you are in that type of situation (and to do it legally is complicated) .
But this sounds like a bit of a toxic work environment. And there are an unfortunate amount of those.
Some companies suffer from this more and some less; but politics is, unfortunately, part of some job responsiblities. Sometimes, the answer is to figure out how to work around the limitations and play around the politicts. And for some people, it isn't a big enough deal to really matter. But imo, I hate it.
oh yeah, happened just previous work day.
I had only sort of myself blame in the end. Higher dev/manager at first saw my colleague does indeed dark magic and shit that should not be made (Terragrunt Layers very obscure coding pattern that heavily obfuscates code), and refactored our code into his... stuff with no present task
but then when i offered Pull Request to refactor the bad impact stuff away i got answer at the level of:
"Lets be more friendly and let other devs do shit for fun stuff too. Cause.. you know... u do too with your golang hehe"
it is hard not to agree. We all need to do some stuff for fun from time to time.
May be my soft skills a bit suck. Anyway, i can see his point, and from that point, okay... my colleagues need to do some shit for happiness too even if it is completely bad stuff impacting our work/code base in the most obfuscating way
We sort of need to be more friendly. Heck, i did plenty of my own mistakes in the past.
My boss is certainly a boss because he has both, hard skills and awesome soft skills. He can nurture a person to grow into a professional.
it takes a very good soft skills/good attitude to transform person into competent (eventually). We sort of need to be more forgivable. Sometimes we do all the bad stuff too
This was my last job and I did whistle blow and get "laid off" for it. I'm realizing that my fear of getting into a similar work environment is making it difficult for me to find a new one.
(I know it wasn't a real lay off because they immediately rehired for my position)
Not sure what country you live in. But thats retaliation and illegal. But yes, this is always the fear and concern.
What I would really do, is bring up your concerns about criticism and being impacted negatively by others, to your manager (if you have not already). Ideally, if they are good at being a manager, they can help resolve the issue or advise you on the situation. But you would know better here on if this would help.
Honestly I tried anything and everything.... Nobody is perfect and making mistakes is perfectly okay! It's hiding them, lying about them, etc that I have a problem with, especially when it affects assessments I'm making or work I'm doing.
anyway.. i prefer to leave judgement to other people in such cases. I don't want to be evil/hurting other people feelings with my intollerance of bad stuff.
I am perfectionist, yes i will dislike all the bad stuff for sure 😅
It's time
#career-advice message
so you're asked to keep your mouth shut or even lie/mislead other people at the company as to project results?
i need to keep my mouth shut only in the group. because being toxic is bad. hurting other people feelings will impact their work performance badly
On another hand private reviews can be absolutely honest (since they are private anyway)
Yea, @mortal wedge's situation sounds more intense than what you are describing @buoyant seal. But I roughly agree with what you are saying, I just also think you are trying to make their situation fit into your experiences. And they sound different here.
I work on medical devices. I don't want the morality or honestly personal liability of lying to others in a company or in public about a project
Just scared that they're all going to be like that
I guess the only solution is to hope your boss/company is a decent sort, bring it up to them, and worst case leave the company I guess
i guess, probably those are different situations. Nobody asked me to lie to my higher ups ever.
I just need to be more friendly within the group itself, which is pretty obvious requirement. Which nobody is asked me too, but it was implied i guess hehe
It was my higher up asking me to lie to other higher ups at the company
Having two companies put you in this situation sucks. And some industries are worse than others about these things. But there are good companies out there. And please don't sell your morals 🙏.
I am taking your word at face value. But I really appreciate what you are doing.
Thank you. I kind of regret blowing the whistle now, but I'm sure after I've gotten back on my feet I won't.
I hope this bad coworker isnt working on devices i use 😔
If it helps, as long as it isn't related to your brain you have nothing to worry about?
Not related yet 😩
@mortal wedge, I work in finance. Finance can be a boys club. Like really really bad. Locker room talk is expected and nasty at times. I hate it.
I say that ,,, but the company I work for also hates it. And we don't associate ourselves with those types of people. So while the industry at large might be full of this boys club; my corner isn't.
I don't know a ton about your industry. But what I am getting at, is that even in industries that have problems, there are always groups of people that are just actually good people and good environments. None of that toxic sludge
I would jump ship instantly, its not part of the software dev responsibilities to teach people ethics and they sure aint paying you for these lessons anyway
Oh, to be clear, in case I wasn't explaining myself well, it went like this.
- I had a job
- Job asked me to do some pretty sus things
- I refused
- I was "laid off"
Just a single medical device company involved.
Ah, well for the future i would pull up linkedin before going to people with concerns
Since you're out of a job now, can you report them to the proper authorities?
my first job had probably more close experience to yours.
- Main dev asked me to do in my work time stuff unrelated to main job, but instead taking care of his previous job stuff (In work time of a main job).
i followed it for a month or so, before refusing to follow that further. I made a right call for sure. Because working in overtime is always horrible for my mental health and i was not efficient anyway (due to little knowing about his previous work tech stack. Hehe main dev previous work was in golang, and i knew no golang at that time)
Making decisions regarding our moral compass, sure can be hard.
heck i was rewarded for being honest that time. And i continue being honest and just resolve my issues with managers privately.
Some people can be having less choices being honest, if they have no money to support themselves though. Usually software dev jobs are paid well enough to be not caring too much about getting fired though, just a matter of having proper money pillow
I don't know if I have enough to back up that report on hand and they'd 100% know it was me. So I'm not sure it's a good idea anymore. I'm hoping my replacement cares and even if they decide to fire thme and rehire someone else yet again it's gotta start adding up in costs, lol.
Oh well, cant beat em all
Yeah. The only saving grace I have is that in the end I didn't compromise my morals. Not that morals pay rent, but.... 😄
Did they fire you with cause? What about severance?
what do u guys think of my new resume ```Experience

your resume is pretty good, but you should also add your certificate (it it is) and you can also add your Degree(if you have any ). And last but not the least that you can add a brief summary and also can add your interest base projects that you want to work on.
I do have a degree yes
then it is good option to add it into your resume ..
Hey can I add my open source projects as my experience ?
The ironic thing is that sus things are what gets companies into trouble, yet bad leaders forget this in search of quick fixes. The Vw emissions scandal comes to mind as a classic: developers do what mgmt asks, and shenanigans ensue (eventually)
Your first job: 'discovered session login vulnerability' is not a good first bullet: there's no task here, like: 'performed security review .... finding ....'
What positions are you aiming for?
Full Stack Mobile
id cut out unnecessary information for full stack mobile
like godot and bevy
some mobile or web dev jobs want you to write shaders or work with 3D so I kept it
damn really? lol
yeah
Is it for games? also that's too much imo
let say u wanna sell 3d models assets for games. or u wanna show a product in 3D
This my portfolio: https://www.whoisharsh.space/ ,
my resume https://drive.google.com/file/d/1px9GCYnJotPAP0v7bGuNeaUJRNB_Aair/view
Software engineer specializing in crafting cutting-edge generative AI solutions. Proficient in guiding products from concept to completion, adept in team leadership. Experienced in AI, ML, and DL technologies, as well as web development and cloud computing
perhaps a screenshot so people dont have to click on links and use services?
gotcha man
I read the first few bullets. I'll be blunt: they don't make sense and are very incomplete. "The deployment of 5+ production-level LLM agents, different for each use cases" is both logically and grammatically wrong. The other jobs are much better.
Also, way too much bolding. It's distracting. You don't need to bold everything.
Is wokerd a typo of worked?
Education: No idea what "upto 7th Sem" means. Does this mean it's not finished? And may 2025 is expected graduation date?
maybe I'm being pedantic, but
Illinois, USA
London, Europe
Greece, Europe
``` something ain't right here
switch out the bold in the paragraphs themselves with this sort of text if you think it's important anyway
lmaoo, well it aint wrong, it could be more right
yeah in India, each year divide into 2 sem. so 4 years = 8 sem . so i have completed till 7 sem.
i need to fix that
can you please point out other points so i can work on that.
Was on an interview with a senior at the company, was a really well paying QA job, around 4k per month.
I passed the first phase that was doing a folder synchronizer (https://github.com/joaosousa997/Folder-Synchronizer) and then on the interview i didn't check some of the boxes, for example not having experience in QA.
But wat really made me confuse was the dude be really upset by me saying that name == "main" had a use, dude said it was just a placeholder
I answeared that it lets you run the code but not directly when imported, honsetly idk much about it but i know it's not a placeholder
Id hire you
Python is an easy to read, high - level programming that's mainly used for computer science and data management
Oh smth i dont do
What does it mean for a programming language to be used "for computer science"?
Ive been here since july 2024 crazy i dont even remeber why or how i joined
Your subconscious was trying to tell you something
like for college
Trying to tell what
That's for you to figure out
Try to remember why you joined here
I think i wanted to troll or was it cuz i was tryna reach 100 joined servers
Ye im not a programmer i like it but ion got a computer
Im trying to learn coding and starting with python but alot suggested i choose a career i wanna do so whats a good option that doesnt require a degree has good salary and can be done from home? And also easy to find a job in that career
It will be exceptionally hard to find a job that meets all four of your criteria.
Two of your criteria are mutually exclusive (easy to get and pay well)
Where can I find community manager or moderating,or content writing job
The 2 most important are without degree and from home
It will still be challenging, but web development is where you're most likely to be successful
These occupations sound outside the scope of this channel.
Doesn't it have alot of competition?
Sure
Yes, because a lot of people want WFH jobs that don't require a degree
But it still has high demand right
Also what is data analysis?
you're very unlikely to get a job doing analysis without a degree. analysts advise people on how to make consequential decisions, so the standard for who they grant that level of trust is going to be higher.
so apparently the thing that is messing me up with jobs atm is having experience in to many areas rather then specializing in just one
funny how things work
How do you know that is messing up your jobs?
feedback off a recruiter and feedback i've gotten on resume
mind you most roles been cyber orientated i've been going through lately but because my previous experience wasnt just doing analyst work, recruiter said they wanted someone more specialised
Cool that you got feedback. Was it that you just don't have a specialization or that you could structure your resume more to be focused on an existing one?
then recommended me trying for analyst/entry level roles
i've got it management experience(3years) and freelance experience 12 years, but then did a bachelor in IT and a masters in cyber(midway into masters), feedback was only given when i reached out since he was pretty transparent with it on the phone
when I was an undergrad, I got an award for academic excellence in the study of religion. and the career advisor told me not to mention that on my resume, because none of the companies I was applying to would care.
you won't get penalized for knowing a lot about topics they don't care if you know about. they just won't care. it sounds like your actual problem is that you're not presenting enough relevant experience.
Ah, so this is a specific interview that was looking for something more specialized? That's understandable and still decent feedback (given I rarely got any feedback, myself).
but my management experience covered alot of roles as well
yeah basically it was for a startup, so they wanted someone who had experience with just security engineering, even thought i'd covered it in my previous role wasnt specialised enough
that might be the case, i've had trouble showing relevant experience, since most of it was from what would usually be other roles and i've had to expand my scope of duties to make up for lack of staff or freelance projects/uni
i think at this point i've redone resume about 7 times after having people review it, and between that 7 times applied for 800+ jobs in 7months time
i think i need to go through and workout what to strip off it and what to keep
I think you're still missing a key nuance: the problem isn't that you have experience outside of security engineering. it's that you didn't have enough experience with security engineering. it would be insane for someone to say "you have enough experience with security engineering for this role, but because you happen to know about <not security engineering>, I'm going to reject you"
hmm possibly, my time in an IT management role, was basically a mixture of multiple roles instead but i can see the point your making
but then would i be better off treating it as i lack experience or trying to rely on that experience
as in should be trying for entry level roles in that case or would my experience still be something worth trying to contibute towards other roles
would you be happy giving me some feedback on a redacted resume? can dm or post here since redacted
you don't need permission--if you post your anonymized resume here, you'll probably get feedback from a few people.
I'm signing off soon, though
oh i cant send pdf's
you can post it as a large screenshot
you want to get it to one page. you can save space by making the left margin smaller and not having blank lines on "other work experience". I would also list "disability support worker" the same way you list "log cutting and processing" (list it only so there isn't a time gap)
I worked as a respite worker for a while--I don't list it at all on resumes for jobs in my field (AI)
In the US, you don't list references on your resume. idk if the convention is different "down under".
the spacing between lines is pretty inconsistent throughout.
I would delete "Implemented complex algorithms ... and efficiency". it's ultimately just a grandiose way of saying "I wrote code", but doesn't give them any of the specifics that they care about.
alright ill fix that part up tonight, do you think its worth me applying for the same sorta level of role or is it something i should be going for entry positions instead?, i thought experience would be enough to qualify for atleast a mid role, but a bit unsure if i could get passed the recruitment barrier now
I don't think I'm the one to answer that question.
well appreciate the feedback eitherway, still a big help
@hot nebula am not yet able to speak on the voice chat its so weird
is python the easiest coing lang to learn?
Easy is subjective. Go learn Python for an hour or two. Then do C, C++, Go, Ruby, etc.
I think Python is very easy. I use probably 5 different languages often.
Hello guys, how are you doing, I'm new here, guys, I just took cs50 2025 and I'm already in week 1 C, and it's already become complex, hahaha, what do you recommend I do and where are the exercises to do or tasks for each week, my English is not very good, I speak Spanish and I am from Colombia but I want to be a good programmer, so I am making the effort to take the course in English
It is Easy in the beginning, but Hard to master.
It is Easy to write scripts, but Hard to write dozens/hundreds thousands code lines. You can do it, but u will be needing very thorough unit testing for a sane way to do that and investing into monitoring systems like Sentry.
Try python, and see for itself.
Then try languages like Golang/C#/Java and see a difference.
When i was in university... C# was the most productive language to me from a start to write plenty of student(garbage) level code regardless of its complexity 😅
Qualities of static typed language help to write code easier due to a lot of auto validations before runtime
Today this language is Golang for me.
Practice and practice, that's everything. It doesn't matter what you do if it has you coding and thinking and solving problems. If you have more specific questions on things you're stuck on, try #python-discussion or open an help channel with an excercise question and what you've tried so far
How to become ml engineer
Learn programming, get degree, keep learning.
These are my open source contributions what more can I do ?
Doing but still dunno the right path
including one more rocket.chat but there response time is so slow that I dont count it yet
hey billy wdy think what more can I do ?
There's no 'path' besides: first getting really good at programming, and along the way, choose projects that are related to your interests. Plus get a degree in CS or related field.
Keep practicing?
I dont have CS degree sir
To say keep practicing with more words: Find communities you can help, gaming communities or some others. Become part of this community around smth, game or smth else.
Then u will be able to find very worthwile topics to where applying the practice
i wrote some article there on this topic
It is more fun to practice if u develop stuff that is actually useful to someone
Oh ok ty
How should i approch getting an interntship for the summer, iam a second year doing CS AI/ML iam in my 4th sem rn, my gpa for the 3rd sem should be around an 8(Havent gotten the grade sheets yet but iam fairly certain it would be around that). My uni gives us a 2 month break for summer so i figured doing an internship would be a good way to use my time, so I had 2 questons:-
- Would it be worth it?
- How do i go about approching for one
Worth it implies there's a cost. What's the downside?
And, what country are you in?
Hey Guys! how are you doing? I have a question, Which salary is good for our data area like "Data Analyst" and Business Analyst" in USA if we consider Mid-level?
depends on your city
USA is a big place with many different localized economies
not to mention "Mid Level" is quite the broad term. So what, 2-15 years experience?
Currently I don't live in USA, because this I ask you :(
the Recruiter told me which the vancancy is in Florida
where in Florida
And yeah, how many yoe?
Fort-Lauderdale
And are you authorized to work in the US? Visa and work authorization is not a trivial matter.
Company will give me a Visa
But, I think in the first moment will be Remotely
That's not really how it works: H1-B's, the most common worker visa for tech, are controlled by the government, and are distributed in a lottery system. No company can or should promise that you'll get an H1-B... only that they'd sponsor you for one (which gives you a chance of getting it).
Yeah, because this They told me which in the first momento will be remote 🤷♂️
But, I'm in interview, I only would like to know about the salary average
the roles is really good
Did you ask them?
not yet
Start there
They ask me into email, what is my expectation?
There's several things to consider. There's not really a shortage of data analyst skills in the US, so that they'd be willing to sponsor an H-1B for it suggests that either you have unique skills that they really want and are hard to find elsewhere, or the company isn't able to attract local talent.
You would be best able to decide which category your situation falls into
If it's a tech company in Fort Lauderdale, well, it could easily be the latter. Florida isn't exactly a tech hub.
Does the EU have similar policies wrt citizens of non-EU countries?
I see
Either way, you should be pretty careful about this. There are a lot of scammers that prey on people who are looking for an easy way into the US and if they're offering something that sounds really good, you definitely need to do your research and don't send them any money
All the h1bs that I've been involved in hiring have been here already, most usually on a student visa, not hired remotely first, so that raises an eyebrow for me
Yes, maybe they'd like me to work remotely and they talked about the visa to win me over
But I don't hire business analysts.
That's also a possibility, yeah
Can I make money with open source ? I am talking about 400$ to 500$ a month
I agree, and this community is good because information is very scarce
is there a data analyst here? i’m currently doing a python course and the web-scrapping portion intrigues me. just wondering if you guys use those tools and what you really do
it's definitely possible, but it takes a while to get there.
I'm BI analyst
How many merged PRs we talking about ?
uh, you can get 1000 PRs merging typos, the number of PRs dont matter, it's the content you're merging in.
sounds cool, what do you do for work? do you retrieve data from the web or is it given to you? how do you “analyze” the data? what factors are you looking for? I’m honestly intrigued
u wanna take a look at my content ? No typos
#career-advice message
How high is up?
meanin ?
You can't answer that can you
I am just an ordinary person trying to help communities and make a small living with it thats all.
The usual way open source monetization works is that you are a maintainer of some library that then receives donations. Or you make a commercial version of that library (giving perks like support, priority in tickets, etc).
Currently I make dashboards and reports about process data, doing too statistcs analyses for preview the next month and next step of process, and to know how will be my demand
Of course, its not my all roles, but in general is this
What bout github sponsors ?
That's the donation angle, the exact means through which you receive donations can vary.
Anything more solid ?
a job
A classic move is selling a book/consulting on the topic of your library.
Who would want consulting from a punk like me ?
If you become the author of a key library that underpins a key process within a company, it can work
but generally, I would recommend doing open source in your free time and sticking to commercial software as a source of income. Open source monetization has always been dire.
Can I not do something with what I am already doing ? #career-advice message
I tried real hard building an audience on bluesky but I dont think people like my content or opensource
you make dashboards? does that mean you also handle ui/ux? can i add you by any chance, im interested in what you do
Sure! send me a message,
I have worked with react does this mean I can do consulting with it ?
Not the place, !space
!cleanban 1283528402418139260 Clearly you're only here to solicit work.
:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: applied ban to @solar shell permanently.
crazy
clever
I’m currently 15 and is from the uk and plan to be a software developer in the future, is there any tips and people with experience who can share some pros and cons about the job? :)
The future is now. Learn a little every week and you'll have a solid foundation.
And, get a Uni degree in CS or a related field.
alright :) I will!
ok! thank you 😃
Which kind job
What are you asking? What kind of job can you make money from?
Hey man, I'm a professional community manager, moderator,and also content creator if you need any of my service you can contact me
@harsh river is him that is asking
I don't think KRRT was the one asking
@deft herald do you have any job bro
yeh bro
Ok,which one
On my profile
Qualcomm right
That is what it says, lol
That's good bro
yo
Thanks for the approval 👍
im making a ict project and need some ideas for my upcoming exhibition
Do you have any job or project I can work with
i certcli (the spiritual leader of pydis) also approve of your job you can continue with it
Nope. Also, please read the rules as this is not a job board
Oh,year
Lol thanks friend. How'd you get the title "spiritual leader" by the way?
What is the meaning of that"spiritual leader
You need a custom role i think
well ok so its actually "compTIA security+ certified cybersecurity expert and analyst + spiritual leader of pydis"
i try to stay humble
can i call you Rabbi?
uh sure
You need a full page for your certifications
It's almost like people don't read the rules or even the most recent conversation of a channel
hello, your message was deleted since we do not allow advertising in this server
you must be new here
After you got your CS degree and graduated from university, how long did it took you guys to get a job?
Please can you tell me the platform to see open source work
I could answer you, but i don't think my answer would be of any help to be honest
Whether it helps or not, im just asking.
Mostly because i graduated cough14cough wheeze years ago
So since you are a graduate, how long did it took you to get a job, in the field?
Well, i kindasorta had a job that was semi relevant already. But it was about a year after I graduated when i finally got the job that i would consider to be the beginning of my career
ok thanks.
That was by choice that i didn't even start looking for about 10 months
You took a break?
But like i said, that was a while ago. The industry has changed a whole lot since then
No. I already had a job that was decent and still kind of relevant
Yes, indusry changes every day if im honest with you.
thanks for the honsety
oh ok i understand.
and where is your "Humble Edition" tag?
My request was denied
Too much pride they said
about 9 months
it was at the height of the pandemic though, im not sure its representative today
Well, the industry has changed since the pandemic.
my friends all have jobs lined up before graduation. so...-6 months?
Wow that's great. None for PSVM though?
What is the difference between work experience and a degree?
theyre not comparable things
eh. I would say a Master's could compare pretty close to a bachelor's + 2-3 years experience
at least in some regards, such as HR's criteria for determining pay scale, for one
definitely not in ability lol
Also depends on the actual master's degree and the actual years of experience
wdym anyway?
but yeah. I have 13 YOE and wish i had a Master's
Funny, I have a masters and thought it made zero difference
Altho, I wish I finished my PhD. I might yet still tho
What I mean is that, degree requires you to go university. However work experience requires you to go to a work environment.
ok but what about it
Yah, degree is generally about learning about a lot of topics and developing critical thinking skills and building a strong foundation.
are you trying to substitute one with the other?
Another key difference: a degree costs a billion dollars. Work experience pays you
Thats why not many pursue a degree, due to cost of uni
but, many employers will sponsor post-graduate degrees
Many do pursue a degree, and many employers require it for entry positions.
Is starting to learn python at 15 too late?
Too late for what?
No? Why would it every be too late?
I can't think of a non snarky answer, how could you even think ponder this?
For being software engineer
Short answer: No. The roadmap is: go to Uni, get a CS or related degree. Learn whatever you want between now and then, including programming if you want.
And if you want to start learning programming, ask for resource suggestions and project ideas. #python-discussion has many people of all ages and skill levels
The best time to start learning <insert new skill here> is yesterday. Second-best time to start is today
I dont believe this is true anywhere for software engineers
Well thats your POV bud.
Sure, good thing we have data for these kinds of topics
the majority of software engineers have a cs degree
but the majority of people don't have a degree.. so it depends on what you mean
Yeah i mean, i've never come across a SWE position that didnt require a degree
its a fair question tbh, you're a what, freshman in high school?
to clarify i'm not saying they're stupid, but it can be tough when you compare yourself to your classmates who've already been doing it for years
and when you don't have the context for what is normal in the industry and what's not
Does social media push this idea that 'you're late' no matter what?
yeah, that too
yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Youre supposed to come out your mother ready
Tiny little arch pc on hand
Penguin stickers on the lid (not the linux kind)
bro whaaaat
This channel should host a poll on degree debt and repayment
I'd love to see how CS grads/software engineers are supposedly struggling to repay their student debt (especially in the US)
Linux arch is used for very budget laptops
its not, but thats off topic for this channel
It's the ones who can't find junior level jobs who can't pay it back
Yes it is, most people use Linux cuz Windows has sucked their laptops such as me but some people use it for other stuff
Wrong channel
What can anyone say to that though? Try harder? Skill issue? A degree isnt a guarantee
Well I wasn't arguing just making a point
Are there stats to support idea that many aren't finding jobs?
The pay isn't hard, getting hired is especially when everyone wants a junior position and nobody wants to hire that
i hate those cert-awarding courses that tell you to pay right after finishing
I dont think so
Yeah im not sure how saturated the market is rn tbh
Not really my field either
the only ones i've seen are job postings on linkedin are down and i guess you could extrapolate that people are having a harder time from that
Actually, you could go uni by uni and see their stats on hiring x months after graduation
It's one of their selling points and one of the two main figures they showcase
Jobs are too hard to find in the US at the moment. Software engineers can’t find jobs even with experience
Good thing cyber is in 😎
My cousin just moved from Turkey to Czech Republic. They need a lot of work force there she said. She wants me to go there. She works in a pharmaceutical company
do you have any non-paywalled sources
Is it paywalled?
go to iran
My point is there's lots of anecdotes on both sides. I've yet to see real data.
The Cs grads I know all landed jobs. But, just anecdotes
I mean me applying over 600 jobs and getting 3 call backs is a sign that there’s something going on.
It's almost like the market is dependent on where you live and what local businesses need
"Behind the overlay" is an ext that exists btw, use it
it is not
You're not applying to SWE positions.
I did apply to entry level ones
You have a masters right?
Yup. I do. The problem is entry level jobs are dead 💀. My friend recommended to this entry level job in a cybersecurity firm. They rejected my resume cuz I don’t have experience
in this case one person sample size is not really representative of the population
I think people don't want to hire masters since they worry they'll try to move to a different position as soon as possible
Again, anecdotes not data. I haven't seen any data other than number of job postings, which is also not very clear
there are a number of factors that might influence a particular person's success or lack of success. you can't use it to make generalizations about the market as a whole
i've seen this https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/careers/job-hunting-2025-hiring-5924a1d7
A lot of companies that waited to post job openings are now ready to move forward, she says. In a LinkedIn survey of nearly 2,000 C-suite executives last month, 77% said they are planning for steady or high-growth hiring in 2025, while 4% said they plan to slow hiring or cut jobs.
So something happened after Covid. For example people graduated before Covid in my department had 85 percent job getting rate. Now it’s at 25 percent
Half of the people in my graduating class are still without jobs even after a year and half
doesn't seem like a great sign for the program
It’s not the program tho. Job openings are the problem.
The program is actually really good. @pine sleet I got a lot of job offers on my second year of college which was right before Covid but since I wasn’t graduating I couldn’t take them. Now I’m in limbo with rest of my friends lol
Tldr the market is mid and some places are better than others
My professors said the same thing. There’s a shift going on
None of this data is particularly useful. The previous post was more about the banking crisis freezing startups in 2023. And there's anecdotes on both sides. My anecdotes show people getting interviews and jobs. Yes, market is tighter. Your mileage may vary.
The main thing is; companies are being more selective on who they hire. Yes, big tech isn't hiring everyone with a heart beat.
Well how can they be selective at an entry level job?
I'm very selective on my entry candidates. I might hire 1 of 10 candidates.
Entry level jobs require no previous experience. They look for experienced people in entry level jobs?
experience isn't the only way to compare candidates. you might look into things like what projects they have done, or what research they've done
And personality/culture fit.
that seems quite high
Culture fit?
Third party recruiter is actually pretty good at their job
How can you tell if they are culturally fit by looking at a resume?
Well I'd assume by looking at any socials they've linked on the resume
And what sort of projects/activities they've done
That doesn’t make any sense. You need to interview them to know about that
Some people may put volunteer work/community involvement on their resume as well. Or OSS contributions, etc
I look for: education, location, experience (including internship), quality of resume (can't help it, if it's bad, I assume bad), work authorization, relevant skills or breadth of skills, all before even interviewing.
what's wrong with interviewing them?
But yeah, you don't get the full picture on culture fit without an interview
Nothing I am saying without interviewing it would be weird to decide that @true harness
Interview was assumed.
Yeah the problem is some of us can’t even get an interview hahahaha
But, there's multiple steps. If thru recruiter, you first gotta pass his smell test.
Once i put this under skills
- will reliably refill coffee receptacles once current supply has been depleted
and actually got a lot of positive comments on it, haha
Like me with over 600 applications i got 3 interviews
oof
When you apply for these, how much time do you spend fine tuning your CV and answers to the job description?
That's funny. I like it
I apply same type of jobs
There's humility in it.
Data Analytics @radiant vortex I don’t change my resume at all
One guy even sent me a full fledged SOP document they had drawn up for this exact procedure
Plus I don’t have a lot of experience… So there’s not much to change
I have been doing one job for the last 5 years and that’s it
Based on what you've said before, you're not a coder, and you lack basic skills and knowledge that most people with a bscs would have, so I don't think your inability to get an entry level SWE position is particularly informative there.
This is far from the first time someone has pointed this out to you.
Getting passed up for data science positions that are more targeted towards your experience? Maybe that's a different question.
Yeah Im mostly talking about DS AI ML jobs @white relic
Especially ML and AI Engineering jobs
I applied to couple SWE jobs just to see
why not try to change it up. you can't really do worse than you're already doing
Like embellish my resume?
Man this career stuff is super exhausting
well, embellish implies adding things that aren't true, so don't do that
have you implemented all the suggestions you got from your last resume review?
Yeah! And it looks great now to be honest
according to who?
I'm just a little weary of the constant "tech job market is cooked" fearmongering tbh
I asked several people. They said it looks fine!
Like there’s not much you can change on it anymore. I even asked the college career services
it is a little bit cooked but ime a lot of people just use it as a scapegoat and not improve themselves
i.e "i'm not getting a job becuase the market is bad" instead of figuring out how to get better
How can you get better? When you are entry level
are you just applying to entry level SWE jobs?
To get better you can do masters like me
No I don’t apply to them that much. Once or twice. I’m applying to DS ML and AI jobs
I see
HI i got a question
go for it
make more projects that are more ambitious than what you did in the past or during school. also network
Its sorta a coding question related to python turtle so is it alr if you culd send me a quick dm??
ask what specifically you need help with in #python-discussion or #1035199133436354600
The problem is I don’t have time to do projects. I’m already working and doing masters. There’s no free time for me
don't know what to tell you there
what's your masters about?
My masters is taking a lot of my time. I did a project every semester with my masters
also isn't this like your third master's
No I have two bachelors and this is my first masters
alright
But yeah. I already have projects I have done
well it's not just about doing projects and checking them off
like if you just have 10 different projects you spent a month on and aren't really that good, i'd question their value
Do people do projects that arent related to school or work for experiance or for like the fun?
you can do whatever but if you have a project that's not related to your career you probably wouldn't put it on your resume
oh cuz i hear my friends would say stuff like "ill work on my project later" and their compsci class is not until next sem
lol I have a project every semester and they are hard projects @slow jetty
Literally need to work on them the whole semester. One of my projects had 40 pages of documentation lol
haha and here i am struggling on a simple tic tac toe game for my culminating
Yeah like I had to write a documentation on how MICE, Adam algorithms work etc
hi guys i know the basics of python i just dont know what to do with it? what can i try make im 13 rn and wanna get a coding job in the future and build cool things maybe automations.
you stay in school, get good grades, go to university
but i want to make something out of myself in life instead of playing video games all day
then dont do that, do this instead
try making a tic tac toe game. Its not as easy as it sounds trust me
dont i need pygame for that
Yeah
that might be a tiny bit too hard for me rn
Oh well you can use python turtle modulo i
it's not that serious when you're 13. just build projects and see whats out there
like what sorta projects is what im wondering
i wanna make at least one project before i turn 14 this year
i play roblox and i watch volleyball on tv and anime
so you could do something related to anime, like maybe a tracker of series you've watched
wait what do you mean by tracker of series
so it'd be a GUI where you could input what anime series you've watched, your review of them, how long for etc. you could also make use of some APIs to grab information on the anime and do something with that
ohh ok i see, ive made a text adventure game and i can use input function things to do that right
You could use input but that would probably be better for a CLI not GUI
If you're new you may want to avoid a gui and just get the core logic first
!projects
The Kindling projects page on Ned Batchelder's website contains a list of projects and ideas programmers can tackle to build their skills and knowledge.
If you need some more inspiration
yeah.. im not sure what a gui or cli is
This might be better to move to #python-discussion
What specifically are you looking at when you say location?
Does anyone have any ideas and thoughts of the software egineering degree at WGU?
well in india where i live you get paid internships pretty easy so i was thinking i could go for those, or a lot of internships are in different states or qould require abt 2 hrs of commute each way . SO i was wondering if it would be worth just making a project or smthing
in that order?
Not at all, just those are the types of things I look for
what job opportunities are there that is reasonable for a 13 year old like me to aim for
When? After University or before?
well im not really sure but im only in year 9
What country?
australia
In the us, you'd be very hard pressed to find a job in retail or food service at that age.
When I was that old I worked for my neighbor who flipped houses.
flipped houses?
im only 13 i dont really have a way of making money right now except sometimes from parents from doing chores
There you go. You could mow lawns or do chores for neighbors too
My kids friend, he's 11 or 12, makes like $300 every time it snows by shoveling his neighbor's driveway
Multiple neighbors that is.
well im not really sure how to just go up and ask them for money to clean
ding dong
Hi, I'm hydro. I live down the street. I'm doing extra chores to make money. Here's a printed out paper with my contact info on it in case you have any odd jobs that need to be done. Have a good day!
Hi guys , has anyone applied for citadel?
What you mean idk
idk how to get paid for open source I was asking that. Billy might know something I am waitng for their reply
