hmm?
wdym nothing is showing the app?
@fresh merlin maybe you can look for it in the app gallery
the linux store thingie isnt showing any apps
idk much about chrome os
this is the terminal, i recolored the background to the hexcode on the sidebar in discord
Very cool
nice
@fresh merlin i think since it is debian based
use a package manager apt
@fresh merlin can you try sudo apt install neofetch
for me
@fresh merlin enter neofetch
just dont spam me its bed enough already
this?
yah it is debian
what do i do with neofetch
neofetch just lets you know some system information such as the OS and all
with a cool artwork
SSH, git, some cli stuff
?
i want to run linux apps
then learn how to use the terminal. idk how to teach you though but the internet has so much resources for you to learn that
are there any other commands similar to the neofetch thing
similar?
apt and apt-get are cli commands. theyre package managers to install apps
or packages
what other programs can i get using sudo apt install
@fresh merlin can you try python for me
i think it has python
your terminal i mean has it by default i guess
python3?
just CTRL + C to exit
yeah either
i remembered debian has two versions of python
python for python2 and python3 for python3
python3 allows you to write python
that's pretty much universal vue
python dosent work
not just deb
@proven gorge not really for manjaro and others
Same on redhat though
probably for legacy apps that still uses python2
exactly
i think manjaro has python2 but silenced
lemme look for it if it has
yup it has
dunno how they silenced it
Changed the alias
how do i stop using py on the terminal
@fresh merlin quit()
@fresh merlin there is an easy way: CTRL + d or CTRL + c
useful if youre stuck inside a while loop
CTRL + c just copies
yeah it is not copy
at least not in terminal mode
i reasigned it to copy
good luck getting out of crashed programs then π
I always mix that up when working lol. I am so used to use ctrl + shift + c for copying that I use it even in browsers, which activates developer mode in chrome xD
Thank god I'm not alone xD
man, i hate when i do that
i changed ctrl c back to default and now it does this
`KeyboardInterrupt
_`
i thought i am pretty sure i didnt touch the f12 key π
i am scared for airborne
i think one day he will break his computer
eh we all do when learning
part of the process π
i break debian for three months till i am getting the hang of it
it was a cheap chromebook
and i have a desktop and a windows laptop
im not too woried
Thankfully virtual machines are great for playign around with. If you break em you can just restore a previous snapshot
true
yeah
btw airborne. i just remembered youre not using a vm
I learnt linux before virtualization was a thing, so I bricked a couple of physical pc's xD
whenever i have nothing to do ima boot up my other laptop and mess around with virtualBox
I learnt linux before virtualization was a thing, so I bricked a couple of physical pc's xD
@proven gorge i nearly broke mine even though i followed tutorials
i think the reason i use linux is because windows is slowing down my laptop
before it broke
now i am using another almost broken laptop
Yeah linux is great for slow computers
i like windows because it has all the official support for games and shit
my 8 year old laptop still chugs along using ubuntu lol
i think it is a notebook not a laptop xD i mean mine
I like linux for development though, because compiling C programs on windows FUICKING SUCK
dependencies and all are so beautifully handled on linux
btw is slackware dying or dead?
Intel Pentium NVIDIA GT 620M
@fluid plank cough
desktop pc:
ryzen 5 3600xt
NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060
@fresh merlin :((
its alright i run a chromebook as my main
i am envious give me that
i have a list of parts fr you
send me ship it to me
if you want to build it
nah i want all AMD dont woryy
i have plans
xD
but thanks
give me that parts now
i will just replace your nvidia with an amd gpu
i like nvidia better cuz rtx, im aware radeon has path tracing but its just not the same
just so you know nvidia didnt invent ray tracing
1 sec let me load up the list
it is just that nvidia made it better i guess
@fluid plank i know
No but they did invent very good hardware to do it quickly π
@fluid plank https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Jdg9rr
power supply has plenty of room for better parts
arigathanks bro
np
pretty respectable system for only a grand lol
i found a thing
look at the terminal
cowsay is pretty old by now
try sl
the program intended to punish people that accidentally type sl instead of ls
evening
i been studying too much and my mind wont shut off that or stress lol
freecodecamp ftw
you have insomnia?
i woke up and cant get back to sleep so yeah i guess
The suggestion that I've read is to go to a different room and just sit and do nothing interesting. No looking at your phone for example
Then whenever you start to get tired, hike back to bed
yeah im half doing that except on pc XD
damn
It's also why they say you shouldn't use your phone 30 min before bed
where r u guys based?
hows the situation over there with everything going on ?
Regarding COVID or the election?
both
I think the covid stresses me out less
Although our numbers are still rising quite a bit
i think i messed up my sleeping sched
People are getting complacent, not taking proper precautions
i always sleep 12 AM
we just hit 50k dead since the beginning of the epidemic in the uk
Jesus
holyf
bit scary lol
This might be the new normal
In fairness, I think I can partially live with that
Kind of encourages my being a homebody
My wife and I are happiest when it's just us together
i miss being surrounded by people tbh
yall should watch the move Contagion
lol
why?
already did since a year ago
ohh
it was a nice movie though
oh wait... i just remembered i installed python2 just for skia bindings
no wonder i have python2 xD
i miss being surrounded by people tbh
@deep saddle i miss my friends and my gf
yeah its not great
lol
oh man
the t virus
resident evil reference
because i dont wanan hear some shit anymore
I just had that line go through my head with an announcer voice
i heard there is a new disease coming again
and its coming from china
@fluid plank
it sucks my soul
u guys see the ERB trump vs biden ?
nah i am not american so i aint interested, :(( so uhm what happened?
pomelo? i thought you were a filipino for a second
it hurts me hearing news from the US election. And I don't really like trump. It doesnt affect me much as I am from germany, but it still hurts hearing the news.
But lets not get political
no just a weird uk guy lol
yeah prob best
it never goes well
creeping up on 3 am here
good evening flugzugrings
ewo
creeping up on 3 am here
@deep saddle you should sleep i guess
good evening flugzugrings
@steel eagle Morning!
the plan was to learn python 4 days then code for 2 days well half days i guess
nn guys
which linux distros run gcc
all?
gcc will run on basically anything
not just linux either
bsd, solaris, unix, windows, macOS
hell, I once had gcc working on my smartphone
whats gcc
the GNU C Compiler
an open source compiler for the C programming language
it's used to compile C
and C++
not just linux either
@steel eagle i said which have gcc BIULTIN
no you didn't
you said "Which linux distros run gcc"
Builtin though, that's a tough one
anything developer oriented
it's a pretty much instant install on any distro though
u mean :manjaro:, ubuntu, arch???
yes all three of those it's just a simple install
yes is that also in thre along with the compiler collection?
like what is included in gnu?
You can compile C++ with gcc
quite sure some files will have issues?
not sure how hpp files turn out on that?
gcc can compile obj C too
important to note the distinction between gcc the collection, vs gcc the compiler
yeahhh
I just did some searching and g++ is a command
yes
g++ command is a GNU c++ compiler invocation command, which is used for preprocessing, compilation, assembly and linking of source code to generate an executable file. The different βoptionsβ of g++ command allow us to stop this process at the intermediate stage.
there it is!
GCC is a compiler collection
gcc invokes the c compiler
g++ invokes the c++ compiler
hmm
oh, thanks
get.out.of.my.car
!duckpond
lol
Ngl kinda sad. Probably shouldβve finish reading the code.
who told you about that
have you tried asking it kindly to go faster?
Yeah, it didn't listen
dang must be shy
I even petted it softly too
that's a bit weird ngl
xD
O....wO..?
'OmO'
So if I got an aluminum briefcase and fashion my laptop permanently inside, do you think it would overheat or cause performance issues?
well you'd need to create airflow somehow otherwise ya
why are you gonna do such a thing?
but you could probably increase performance if you stick a couple fans/heatsinks/slits for airflow
also depends on the laptop and the specs
a low tier craptop like a macbook air is already passively cooled
so assuming it was a direct connection to the aluminium briefcase, it would probably run better
or you could do an epic diy water cooling sys and fill the briefcase with water
I made a watercooled laptop once
was a freakin nightmare
chunky, heavy, and useless
but hey, I was paid to do it
Why i'm doing it? Just cause, and I planned on putting in a fan or so and using my dremel to cut a cool slot in it for air
I WON'T Get off yer lawn
This is MY LAWN Get off
riddle me this folks
Riddle. Me. This
I run make package to automate the building of the package for my discord bot
I have gnu make installed for this, obviously
in the middle of building it, I get an error from PyNaCl's setup
File "setup.py", line 159, in run
raise Exception("ERROR: The 'make' utility is missing from PATH")
now I have to dig into this and figure out why it can't see make for some reason
(To be clear it's more of a venting annoyance than asking for help, I'll get it figured out)
THE LESSER-KNOWN PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES #8: LAIDBACK
This language was developed at the Marin County Center for T'ai Chi,
Mellowness and Computer Programming (now defunct), as an alternative to
the more intense atmosphere in nearby Silicon Valley.
The center was ideal for programmers who liked to soak in hot tubs while
they worked. Unfortunately few programmers could survive there because the
center outlawed Pizza and Coca-Cola in favor of Tofu and Perrier.
Many mourn the demise of LAIDBACK because of its reputation as a gentle and
non-threatening language since all error messages are in lower case. For
example, LAIDBACK responded to syntax errors with the message:
"i hate to bother you, but i just can't relate to that. can
you find the time to try it again?"
lol
SΓ hahah
Spanish for yes
But I think this is a quite cool looking icon
Even though I known nothing about the holiday hahah
So now I've come across a NEW issue
for some reason, one of the dependencies must've updated
because after installing the packages locally, there's a permissions error if you try to make package a second time
without make clean first, which removes all the locally installed packages from the venv
never used to happen before, so I'm going to have to look into this and see about submitting an issue or PR to fix the permissions problem for this library
once I track it down
and pin to a lower version in the mean time
and either I've found a really weird set of behavior, or a bug in discord.py
the answer was really weird set of behavior
Dear <@&267628507062992896> Complimenting you guys, the new python logo and font looks really cool. Thank you! (Wasn't sure which was best channel)
Happy Deepawali to everyone, for this who celebrate it, enjoy the festivities, and stay safe with fire crackers and lights. π₯ππ
such a subtle change in a keyword argument
oh lort
I don't know if pinging the admins for something like that is good in any channel
so this is off-topic, meaning you should have used #community-meta, but now you know π
python is all about being inclusive and thanks for your feedback π
Cool, I will retract the message although might be too late they have already been pinged.
now, lets get back to off-topic discussions π
its better to leave it, since ghost-pings will just make it stick
Don't delete a ping, ghost pings are more annoying than regular pings :p
I actually have a feature in my bot to report ghost pings
actually I found a bug in my code when I went to grab it to share lol
I am sure your "thank you" is appreciated. I think we are all very proud of this community in general. And AG for taking the initiative to get us a diwali logo π
if report_ghosts and msg.author.id != self.bot.user.id:
title = f"A message from {msg.author.mention} was removed mentioning"
if len(msg.mentions) > 0:
mentions = [f"{m.name}#{m.discriminator}" for m in msg.mentions]
await msg.channel.send(f"{title}: {mentions}")
elif msg.mention_everyone:
await msg.channel.send(f"{title}: Everyone or Here")
elif len(msg.role_mentions) > 0:
mentions = [f"{r.name}" for r in msg.role_mentions]
await msg.channel.send(f"{title} role: {mentions}")
although your admin ping probably got a few people ready for action
it's honestly been one of the most popular features of my bot....everyone loves it except the people who delete pings
ohhh nice, an anti ghost-pinger?
yep
smart, haha
lololol, very nice
it's honestly been one of the most popular features of my bot....everyone loves it except the people who delete pings
hmmmmmmm
You might want to stop dude, ghost pings are genuinely annoying.
triple is better than dual
I used to have triple, but the 40 inch was just too big for my desk
so it lives in a simpit now
hmm
though I want to get another smaller monitor to have 3 on my desk again
i want 3 - 34 inch triple monitors
%localappdata%/temp -DAR _MEI*
whoops
somehow tabbed to discord in the middle of a command
i would say it looks pretty good
is that made using c#?
the model?
idk
what are you asking is made in c#
You have clipping vertices here and there
o
ASIA JDCUGF
bruh thats is really epic @proper python , i couldnt even rotate the default square
This paper is so cool https://journals.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/index.php/IJoDR/article/view/9079/2926
bruh
Fixed
kinda me?
no it was me
no me
ok i dont want to argue ill let u take this one
π
gotta try out tmux again
square
lol
does anyone know where a small (<13") DVI/HDMI/DP monitor is sold?
DP is preferable
ik this might sound dumb... but "AMAZON" exists
@jovial island Where are you located?
Canada
I'd try Newegg, Amazon, possibly Fry's Electronics. Might even look at BestBuy. Maybe MonoPrice, but I don't know if they'd have anything for that
Actually I wonder if PC Part Picker can help....
maybe
lemme try
ah they only go down to 15"
I wonder if I can get a rpi and ssh into my system and run a command line monitoring tool
Probably
It's a Linux machine
I'll see if I can find some
@jovial island So are you wanting this specifically to be portable? Also, I just had an idea
Ah, gotcha
I want it mostly for monitoring, but discord would be nice
Why 13 or less inches?
I found this, it looks interesting
https://www.xenarc.com/703YP-7-inch-sunlight-readable-lcd-industrial-display-monitor-with-hdmi-displayport-usb-inputs.html
HDMI and DP input
ah, this looks awesomehttps://www.newegg.com/p/0JC-00AW-001E4
can fit some nice monitoring readouts on it
stick some clock speeds, some temps
So tiny
but very good
Damn, that's super cheap
You can get adapters
yes
actually with the 7" touchscreen I could do some cool stuff
its probably time for me to get into GUIs on python lol
does anybody know any tutorials for the unreal engine scripting language?
know C++ ?
if so then just go to the unreal engine docs
if not learn c++ first, i'd recommend taking w3school's course then getting some more advanced stuff off of google
then, again, go to the docs
Hello @daring charm
Havenβt seen this discussed. https://mobile.twitter.com/gvanrossum/status/1326932991566700549
I decided that retirement was boring and have joined the Developer Division at Microsoft. To do what? Too many options to say! But itβll make using Python better for sure (and not just on Windows :-). Thereβs lots of open source here. Watch this space.

Microsoft must be giving him laptop, a salary and desire to do whatever he wants
@cedar leaf I posted about it in #internals-and-peps earlier. They're just giving him a next-gen Surface Book π€£
wow I didnt know you could highlight something and right click and then press search with google!
anyway...
@manic garnet fancy seeing you here
@jovial island HAHAHAHA
I suck too hard to ask any help on this tho, it's just in case
π«π·π«π·π«π·
How dare you?
Whoever designed this has no sense of knowledge or taste
Hahah, yeah, it's a baguette

He did. Until I made sure he didn't
ILol
So he sent Vester to get work done
Well, that's the official story at least
But the actual one will have to be for another day
For fun....
Wait a second
Go to sleep, hitman
Amazing how you put yourself as a priority second to assassinating christmas myths
Vester's assassination dedication
Hahah
holy hell
oh yeah I have seen that problem
firefox has a serious issue
so I have to use edge .. @pure rune :/
the new edge isn't too bad
Yeah I don't want to use it but I may swap..
well I have seen that issue it isn't that bad on this laptop though
"chrome bad! Chromium ram hog" meanwhile firefox
so I have to use edge .. :/
the new edge isn't too bad
@jovial island new Edge is actually really nice, I switched from vivaldi which is saying a lot
I've been using vivaldi since it was in beta
Nothing ever came close until chromium edge
That's a pretty bad memory leak
When the new edge came out all I have used is edge...
it is pretty good
yes. baget
@manic garnet lmao ur pfp is literally tyler1 with a french moustache and a baguette
LOL
@jovial island new Edge is actually really nice, I switched from vivaldi which is saying a lot
@steel eagle So umm UPDATE UR WINDOWS 10000000000
that is to everyone
would you guys store an empty array or null in postgres?
lol why
why to which?
not updating windows
because whatever that one 2000 (2001?) update is breaks everything still from what I know.
it is also known to delete your partitions if you dual boot
very good to know
lol
i have them on separate drives though
so i hope that wouldn't happen
not risking it either way though
im not sure about that then. I think it was specific to a partitioned drive. but not worth to me. I have not updated since like january
i have this one computer i haven't updated for like a solid year or two lol
nice
I will update eventually. Or maybe clean install again when I get my new graphics card
current schema
CREATE TABLE logs (
id CHAR(12) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
created_at TIMESTAMP NOT NULL
);
CREATE TABLE messages (
id BIGINT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
log_id CHAR(12) REFERENCES logs(id) NOT NULL,
author_id BIGINT NOT NULL,
author_name VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL,
author_discriminator SMALLINT NOT NULL,
author_avatar_url VARCHAR(512),
channel_id BIGINT NOT NULL,
content VARCHAR(2000),
embeds JSONB[] NOT NULL,
attachments TEXT[] NOT NULL,
stickers TEXT[] NOT NULL
);
yeah same, i'll probably have to do a clean install sometime down the line
might just wait till i build a new pc lol
it might be better to use an empty array here, since discord.py returns empty lists for embeds, attachments, and stickers if they aren't any
so i won't have to do any conversions
i guess it depends on the context then
not sure why im being pinged to update windows
i alawys update windows
well, i always update whatever OS I'm using
unrelated but i was googling some stuff for vim
and see this https://i.imgur.com/iD58MOC.png
there's a wikipedia page for editor wars
lol
That war ended about 15 years ago afaik
The following image sums the war up pretty good
nano is the one true editor
Nah it's in there with gedit and the rest
nano and gedit are king
I see I will have to get my stick
I woulnd't recommend that
vscode won't detect my python even though i am on linu x
it used to work fine before idk what happened now
Nani is pretty damn good
ed is the standard text editor
Nano*
lol
every helper pats themselves on the back
lol
I don't know what it is, but it seems every day around midnight central US time, all the young children show up and start spamming/doing silly stuff
Now that you mention it, ya I kinda see it @steel eagle
Just bought some stuff for a new pc
A lot of it was on special so the prices are real good
And that's in Australian dollars
cool
nice, jack
@manic garnet lmao ur pfp is literally tyler1 with a french moustache and a baguette

If drawing a sequence diagram for a game that uses a server . Would the actor be the user or the server?
My legs are dead after my workouts two days ago
stretch and get warm bath/shower
else you can get cramps
hot bath and salt helps
i wonder when the pydis staff make a linux distro
Soonβ’οΈ
is it arch based? or are there based on entirely something like its own package manager
Arch or Debian-based, either one works fine
same
How would it? It's just about the muscles being sore after getting broken down. Salt and heat won't really work against that, though the heat could provide some comfort since it results in a passive warm up
My legs are dead after my workouts two days ago
@nova ember take a rest. youre tearing your muscles when you work out
Exactly. That's what I'm doing hahah
And then they rebuild stronger than before. Overcompensation
Time to start!
time to start after i fix my sleeping sched
i am pretty sure my blood has a ticking time bomb flowing around my body. it is 22:12 here
Welp
What do you guys shoulder press ?
yeah goodnight poweroff
What muscle groups do you focus on then ?
Night
Currently, running and increasing my VO2-max
@jovial island I don't have much time, but my goal is to go from a 10:1 to a 12:1 on a beep test. I'm currently at 11:3
@nova ember What distance you run ?
20 meters
You dont do any distance training ?
20 meters is the distance of every increment of the beep test
I know , but do you not do any long distance training , like 5km ,10 km etc..
I do that as well
what distance mostly ?
Different
What times you do for 5k
Haven't done the beep test in a while
Haven't done the beep test in a while
@unreal sigil same i ussally get like 70 on it tho
@grizzled sinew don't advertise your server here.
thanks
@round moss hey are you still on i have a questiom

why does that image remind me of south park so much?
LOL
hello

"hat kid does her best to look intimidating"
.
Question
If you had to choose between discord.py and discord.js which would you choose?
@glad quest I use discord.py but have tried discord.js as well. In fact, I started out with discord.js. Considering that this is a python server, you can probably guess what the most common answer would be
I would personally go with the python version, but i enjoyed working with JS more, Iβd probably go for that one. However, thereβs a great getting started guide for discord.js, which there isnβt really (itβs not as good) for discord.py
In the end, itβs your choice and preference, but I personally prefer discord.py
I heard that this webpage was an excellent walkthrough for discord.py
when i was reading through it it seemed as though it was going to be clear enough to work with
dont you have to pay for it tho
if you've got somewhere to host it you can make a bot for free
i mean for the website
real python i think you have to pay
it will show some small parts
then it will ask you to pay
not from my experience
oh well
not from my experience either
I've literally had a bot run local on my machine for like 2 weeks because I'm been too busy lazy to actually get it set-up on a VPS
I've literally had a bot run local on my machine for like 2 weeks because I'm been too

@wheat aurora what isVPS?
Virtual Private Server
My computer froze
I am doomed
Oh fuck
I got a blue screen
All my work is gone, and I get a disk failure in return
How generous
if lemon creates a distro, i will down for it :3
I don't think he has time for that
yeah :((
You make it isntad
but i need more knowledge and i need more people xD
#ot2-the-original-pubsta just means making Emacs-style mappings for it
How do you make a linux distro?
you smash your computer and vwallaaa
There's a guide called Linux from scratch to make your own there details the steps
or that
Or you can start on an already built platform such as Ubuntu and modify it
The tldr is you compile and assemble an environment around a Linux kernel, which you will also compile yourself
And then package that environment with an installer and bootloader
I have done this process from scratch once, can't recommend it
0 support and you have to fix all your issues and compile most of the software for yourself
We need a distro named alligator pear
@worldly berry it's...I wouldn't call it hard, but it is monotonous and time consuming
I did it when I was like..16 or 17 I think
It was a while ago
okay
am i drunk on vim or neovim?
good question
Re previous discussion: compiling is the most time consuming part. Can take hours depending on what software you wanna bundle
does someone want to be a beta tester of my app
@frozen shore anyone
Re previous discussion: compiling is the most time consuming part. Can take hours depending on what software you wanna bundle
@proven gorge did you hear about an incremental compiling?
nope, what's that? @eager jolt
If you will compile something once and then change something, compiler will not recompile everything, it just will recompile only changed parts. It is very fast, less than 5 - 10 sec
Incremental won't really help in this case. You aren't recompiling a part, you are compiling a while program
Why?
We are talking about making distros
You can incrementally compile a smaller part you changed, but you still need to spend the several hours to compile things the first time
Several hours? In my work, we have a really big c++ program, and his compile time 30min
I don't know what program can compile several hourse
A Linux core compile time is also less then 1 hour
Several large programs, with high optomalizations. A distro is not just the linux core
You need a DE, xorg, browser, something like systemd, a package manager, vim is iirc also not the fastest to compile. You can probably use prebuilt binaries for some things, but probably not for everything
Okey, I think they are not changing consistently, and you can use an incremental building for them
what is the app?
@steel eagle Name of the app is Breaker. it is app like break pro. it helps you to get breaks from work and playing games
oh well I don't get breaks at work and I don't really have much game time so
not really useful for me
the breaks are short and you can choose the time between the breaks
but you dont need to try it
If you will compile something once and then change something, compiler will not recompile everything, it just will recompile only changed parts. It is very fast, less than 5 - 10 sec
@eager jolt Oh right. That I know of. We were talking about compiling an entire linux distro from scratch though. From experience I know that that can take several hours.
This means you will have a bunch of source code all compiled and linked together. It is equivalent of compiling that first time and there is no way around it unless you somehow use pre-build packages (but then it would not be from scratch)
Depends on what state the compiler is in. It could be fine but I would restart the build anyway
i see
It is writing binary instructions to some executable so it is in sense equivalent to writing some file to disk
Usually if you interrupt a write operation by pulling the power the file gets corrupted
cooool
These cities in india just looks so compact
no worse than london
Everything is much more spaced out here in sweden
Hahah true, but that's the capital of the UK
doesn't get too much better wherever you go tbh
sweden's quite young, large and sparsely populated
Hey, we have 10 million people here
Young!?
And people don't really live in the north of the country (mostly) hahah
We are ancient vikings with a bloody history
I'll have you know that the modern swedish nation was founded in the 14th centrury
We are ancient vikings with a bloody history
@nova ember what about the romans
That's because Sweden is huge, but people don't live in most parts of it
Only us stupid sods that could stand the cold decided to live up here
yeah but even the part people do live in is huge
Sparsely populated sure, but not young
i mean, it is pretty young in its current form
modern sweden was founded in the late 1800's
Its current form?
Eh no
jk
Our national day is when modern sweden was founded, which was by King Gustav Vasa back in the 1500's
sweden was a rural society with very little industrialisation
until the late 1800's
i'd call that modern sweden
Industrialization didn't happen in sweden until the early 1900's
what about England then?
Actually, the swedish national day isn't really anything that special. It's the day of the swedish flag
we industrialized in about 80 years, 200 years after UK started their industrailization early 1700's
mid 1750 or so is when that all kicked off
but the UK had been a massive country for long before then
with multiple large cities
etc
so comparatively, sweden was still a little rural farm country until the late 1800's
imo anyway.
πΈπͺ
@nova ember No our national day is after the crowning of gustav vasa
it is not after the flag
Hahah not really
Sure, but we existed as a nation long before we were industrialized
That's my name, yes hahah
sure, but i did say modern nation
perhaps that definition needs updating
before that it was a bunch of county states not unified under one king. Vasa changed that
i don't think we'll figure out a good definition for this
after vasa every county in sweden unified under his flag
forming the modern swedish nation
i guess that's when it established as a unified country
the word modern's doing a lot of work there though
:D
yes, which is our definition of modern sweden
at that time a unified nation was quite new though, seeing as nationalism wasn't really invented until the napoleonic wars early 1800's
You're welcome
π¦π¨π¦π¦π¦
π¨π¨π¨π¨π¨
π¦π¨π¦π¦π¦
One of the reasons we could kick so much butt during the 1600's and 1700's was that we were unified and fighting a lot of non-unified countries
makes sense
Then when everyone else got unified as nations we had to sort of retire with our meagre population
Hahah
i mean people building fucking massive boats loaded with cannons and shit probably didn't help either
wew, easier to stay out of that arms race
probably the right choice
We never did war much to sea like you brits did. Most of our conquest was down in poland, russia, baltic states, and russia
land locked nations
and norway
Oh and finland
a few times
yeah, war with denmark and norway was quite common as well
i was listening to a podcast about some of that early history last night
danegelds, jomvikings and the likes
oh yeah
how it intertwined with britain
pretty cool stuff
one of the largest ransoms ever paid was a danegeld to some dude who came to poke a bit at England
Yeah, the king of denmark had interest in the brittish isles during the 800 up to 1066 sort of
and ended up outside of fucking London
"give me lots of silver."
"okay here it is.... go now?"
"naaaaaaaaaaaah."
That is not how this game is played.
What they did down in france was they gave the vikings some land in northern france so they could settle there. That acted as a buffer for more raiders
yeah, Brittany
so france protected itself by giving some land and having the normands (the vikings that settled northern france) fend of the other vikings
some of the Jomsvikings actually pivoted to protect England / the King
before having to runaway to Brittany
but eventually getting it back
all sorts. lots of crazy shit.
and yeah, the raiders just going into france and sacking the shit out of it for some cash
I should read up more on 800-1066 period in brittish history
lots of interesting stuff happened during that time but I know so little about it π
from my time in school they didn't go into too much detail about it
shame, lots of cool stuff
They never do, that's why school history class suck
pretty much how the modern english language happened was in that era
hey Bisk, which part of the UK are you from?
yeah lol
Mid/South West.
I thought you are from Ireland for some reason
One of the reasons I love english as a language is that it is such a mixmatch of various languages
nah. i was born in London.
Ah
got some latin, some french, some norse, some gaelic, some germanic
perhaps not speaking another language doesn't give me the insight into other languages to say this definitively
but it seems like there's a lot more wordplay in English than many other languages
it is
english is a very rich language compared to swedish
got lots of words for things we don't have in swedish
and the origin of the words are more interesting as well. Peace for example, comes from the latin word for peace (pax)
Also I personally like the phoenetics of brittish english as well (not all of it of course, there are some darn ugly dialects) but in general it is very pleasant to listen to
ah, i like listening to finnish
but that's probably because it's so alien in structure / sounds
and i can't understand it
Really? Finnish is a very different language xD
I listen to Dutch
yeah, i just find finnish interesting to listen to
We got a couple of finns in the flight sim group I fly in, and we usually joke about them not needing to encrypt their comms since it is encrypted by default
also so alien to hear
hah
one of em is a finn-swede as well, which means he live in finland but got swedish ancestry. He speaks swedish as a native tongue but the finn-swede dialect is always fun to listen to
it is swedish but with the phoenetics of finnish
yump yump yump
idk if you've heard of it @proven gorge but the YT channel "History Time" has some +1 hour long podcast type things about history
lots of 800's - 1000's britain stuff too
got a bunch of finnish music
Ah, that makes sense
spent some time in the 00's importing european pop albums
imagine that.
not just having to buy albums of stuff
but also having to import it
@stable pier Interesting, I will check that one out. Thanks!
i've been listening to quite a few at night to drift off. quite a range of history in there.
i found the bronze age collapse to be a good one
always found that to be a weird event
like a cascade of failure across the large civilisations
Don't know much about that period. I know Knossos on crete was a pinacle of civilization back during the bronze age but that it was abandoned due to some climate changes afaik
Yeah seems like there is quite a lot of history on that channel, vikings, ancient greece, brittain, crusades
from what i've gathered about it
seems like due to their reliance on foreign trade that say whoever makes the tin collapsed
no more bronze
then like dominos everyone else falls
aah, yeah tin was of major importance during the bronze age
kinda like oil nowadays
whatever gives you the military edge (heh bronze edge) usually dictates who rise and who fall
Never given it thought that tin could be such a factor, TIL
yeah, there weren't many nations producing it
i think West Asia was quite important for it
although Cornwall in the UK used to be a producer
Back then it was mostly city states and the like yeah? Meaning if your city had a tin mine it would become very prosperous
I'm personally much more interested in the 1900's. Everything except ww2 because that have been done to death
at the moment i'm gravitating more towards uhhh
~1000bc -> 1000ad
and more specifically the collapse of states through war, failures in trade or other socioeconomic reasons
the collapse of a state is one of the more interesting events to study. There is usually a myriad of underlying issues slowly building up to the collapse. Some collapses are sudden and unforeseen as well, which also makes for interesting study. But yeah I am generally interested in that as well, except during different time periods
i'd recommend checking out the bronze age collapse, it's quite the thing.
in the space of 50 years everything just collapsed
really fucking weird
50 years is quite rapid yeah. Usually when it comes to collapses things build up for some decades or so before the collapse happen, and the collapse itself happens over a period of some years to some decades
Also completely unrelated but I am making moose stew today. Me and SO bought about 10 kilos of wild meat today. Moose, red deer, and roedeer.
I've never had moose or deer
red deer meat is really good for tacos I have discovered. There is something in the meat that really brings out the flavour of the taco spices
interesting
Moose meat is a bit mushy vivek, my SO said that minced moose meat almost tastes like quorn
Quorn is quite nice
It was several years since I had roedeer, but yeah I remember it being real tasty
very nice wintery food imo
I googled what quorn is, and this is what I got
Quorn is a meat substitute product originating in the UK and sold primarily in Europe,
Raindeer is interesting, some people like it, others don't
I personally find raindeer meat too dry
serve with like a berry reduction sauce or something
it is more dry than beef and pork, very hard as well, not mushy like moose
I think I understand what you meant by mushy but I can't think of any examples
deer, that is
