That’s your discriminator

balmy stream
#

to discriminate people having the same username as me from me?

narrow pecan
#

Yeah, basically

balmy stream
#

i never came across another SFM61319 in my life

#

it was a well calculated username

narrow pecan
#

It’s randomly generated. With nitro, you get to choose it

balmy stream
#

(i used py for that)

#

oh

narrow pecan
#

Ooo

balmy stream
#

why?

narrow pecan
#

There are a lot of fun things to learn about discord tbh

#

Because they want people to get nitro hahah

balmy stream
#

yeah i was planning on making a bot called "Srcsm" to convert all your text to its sarcastic form

#

like

#

I am a good programmer

#

I aM a GoOd PrOgRaMmEr

narrow pecan
#

Hahah welp

balmy stream
#

(its sarcastic form)

#

a small bot

#

but i dont think thats really necessary now

narrow pecan
#

Hahahah idk

#

Just search something about discord ids if you find it interesting. I’ve personally dug a lot into those kinds of things

balmy stream
#

hey how much experience do you have in python?

cause i need some help

with some modules and importing them

plucky ridge
#

@carmine ore Can I pick your brain for a bit?

carmine ore
#

of course

plucky ridge
#

Are you primarily a JS dev or do you use some supersets like TS?

carmine ore
#

It mainly depends on the project I'm working on

#

Most of the time its just js tho

#

I dont like typescript for most projects cause it usually just ends up with the compiler giving me a stupid error that I cant get around

lofty dirge
#

Typescript is doing what it's supposed to....

carmine ore
#

its really not

plucky ridge
#

I've been toying around with other languages that compile down to JS and just wondered whether you'd heard of them or had opinions on them. ReasonML and Elm in particular.

carmine ore
#

I've heard of both, played around with Elm a bit. Havent touch Reason tho

plucky ridge
#

It's an interesting beast. It's appealing to me in a lot of ways. I like that it compiles down to very clean JS

#

Not the huge 11k lines Elm does

carmine ore
#

I might try it out sometime

plucky ridge
#

What kind of work are you normally doing, if I may ask?

carmine ore
#

Well for webdev, my front end is usually react with an express server

plucky ridge
#

Oooo, neat

carmine ore
#

I make games sometimes. I'll just use an html canvas for 2d and I'll use threejs for 3d

#

Discord.JS is my life

plucky ridge
#

Was actually just about to ask about game engine stuff

#

Been looking through the various ones and there's just so many it's hard to know what's best

carmine ore
#

Well first off, I hate UE4 with a passion

plucky ridge
#

Fair

carmine ore
#

Unity is alright, I just dont feel like paying for the full version

plucky ridge
#

And you said for Web stuff you're usually just working with raw canvas stuff? Or do you have a framework you prefer?

#

Thinking more 8-bit/16-bit RPG

carmine ore
#

Well it kinda depends. If I'm doing a 2d game, I'll either use a canvas or some html divs. Like if its a sidescroller type game, canvas. But if I'm doing like a candy crush type thing or something like that, divs.

#

As far as 3D games go. if its going on the web, I'll just use Three.JS and slap some physics and stuff in there

plucky ridge
#

Neat. Well cool, I appreciate you taking some time out of your day to humor me

carmine ore
#

Oh of course. I'd love to talk to you some more. You seem really cool!

plucky ridge
#

I'm pretty much always here during weekdays. I'm always down for a conversation

carmine ore
#

Nice, I work 8 hours a day so like, I probably wont be here that much

#

A silly question but: Do all of you guys use Linux or any Windows fan there?

gentle moss
#

i use both

#

fan of both for different reasons

plucky ridge
#

Same

#

I like Windows because more often than not, stuff just works

#

Most business programs are geared toward it, and for my line of work, that's a necessity

#

Linux I like because of the developer utility of it

#

And the cost

gentle moss
#

linux has that "i can do it all from a shell" feeling and i love it

plucky ridge
#

I'm curious to see if Windows will move more towards that

#

I mean they are developing a package manager

solid pollen
#

Oh are they

gentle moss
#

no he's asking if they are

solid pollen
#

That's a sweet news

gentle moss
#

or would

#

i don't think having a package manager will be that step towards linux-y usage of windows

plucky ridge
#

No no, they are making one

#

That's confirmed

#

I'm just curious to see whether we'll be able to be as flexible in the command line with it

gentle moss
#

oh no i'm the linux-y feel thing

plucky ridge
#

Ahhh

#

Okay

gentle moss
#

i don't think you're going to get that from straight windows any time soon

plucky ridge
#

I don't either.

gentle moss
#

need to get linux on this thing in some format.

#

VM on another "workspace" or w/e

plucky ridge
#

Something more substantial than WSL?

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

although maybe i should check out WSL

#

i miss having my laptop's lubuntu setup at hand

solid pollen
#

WSL is the biggest joke ever: "You want to use linux? Well, keep our platform and use WSL, it is the same as linux, but you are still giving us money!"

plucky ridge
#

I mean... I have used it and it has made running some things more handy than having to set up a whole new machine or a VM

#

So I see where you're coming from, Ak, but I think it's more for folks who require Windows for their job or for other reasons but still want access to specific kinds of tools

#

I don't think it's a "See? We're just as good as them!" thing

prisma geyser

synesthetes also report having no idea that other people don't perceive the world like they do.

Mm. There was this point near the side of my knee. If you've had acupuncture, they tap insert the needle, off comes the sheath and they wriggle around the needle until they hit the point.

At which point there's this electric shock kind of sensation which will often strike down or up a given path.

The needle went in and as it hit the right point, a distinctly brown feeling shot down my leg like lightning.

Hmm

#

Now I wonder where I'm at with regards to that and if there are people who visualize things way more vividly than I do

floral viper
#

The brain is indeed pretty fascinating. I started getting these weird glitches when I went to sleep a while ago. Like that scene where neo is being pulled out of the matrix the first time. I freaked out but after consulting a doctor it turns out it was just a stress reaction conjured by the brain.

solid elbow
#

isnt glitches a computer term or am i wrong
@spiral ridge you're not wrong, but it's not inaccurate to apply it to other stuff. The best guess we have about why deja vu happens is that there's a race condition between your brain's retrieve-from-memories routine and your store-in-memories routine that makes it so that a thing you've just experienced is stored in your memory and then immediately read back as though it happened before.

floral viper

I see white noise in front of my eyes even though they are closed and I hear this weird sound like someone is playing a tape backwards

kids are HIGHLY unlikely of dying from covid

solid elbow

Kids can die, too, admittedly at less than the 1% rate that adults are at.

I've seen the idea of learning "pods" going around, a small, constant group of kids gathering at one house each day that has the internet to support them. That might work

It's okay though, kids don't have families, right?

floral viper
#

one day last week, Texas reported as many confirmed positive covid cases as the UK reported on its worst day, April 22.
@solid elbow Confirmed cases don't tell the whole story though. They are affected by testing. Better to look at death statistics, grim as it is

red willow
#

yes, death statistics is what I look at it

solid elbow
#

@floral viper sure. But that's only relevant to bring up if you think our testing is catching most cases.

red willow
#

and it is trending well

empty prism
#

I'd like some longterm complication stats...

scenic blaze
#

fun fact, I believe US is above 3% death rate for covid rn

solid elbow
#

Our confirmed positives are probably ~1/10th to 1/15th of true positives, which is only more terrifying.

floral viper
#

@floral viper sure. But that's only relevant to bring up if you think our testing is catching most cases.
@solid elbow I know your testing isn't catching all of it, hence it is an untrustworthy source. Hard to not register a death though.

solid elbow
#

no, it's easy to not register a death...

scenic blaze
#

I apologize, that's not a fun fact

red willow
#

no it isn't

spiral ridge
#

they can do it virtually

#

they may not have phones or computers but can the government make a budget to buy a few 100 - 200 dollar computers

Right you can attribute it to other facts. Age, flu, pneumonia, etc. But it is a hell of a lot more accurate than mere confirmed cases

Same. Could be over in less.

China could have been more transparent without it. Satellite photos have shown hospitals in wuhan in panic mode as early as august

If you look at counts of deaths compared to the number of deaths that are averaged on that day year-over-year, you'll find that our number of deaths show a huge spike, and only part of the spike is attributed to covid - the rest of the spike is probably caused by, or related to, the pandemic as well, but isn't recorded that way, and isn't reflected in our official death figures.

@solid elbow You are correct. There is a political will to lower the statistics by cutting out deaths from complications related to covid, pneumonia for example. When I was looking at this back in march/april I also looked at the deaths from flu and pneumonia to get a better picture.

beer is getting me. A pandemic is hard without the ability to dull your senses. 🙂

empty prism
#

lol

floral viper
#

nother reason I wanna move to a place with a lot of bike trails, get me a bike and goout
@empty prism Nature is the best for relaxation!

hazy void
#

Hi

scenic blaze
#

That's what weed is for but now I haven't been able to find my weed for days 😦

empty prism
#

for sure! I want more trails in general, ain't much around me now

#

and I wanna walk my dog on a trail

#

Hello!

floral viper
#

Me and SO is getting a kayak pretty soon. Gonna be nice be out on the lakes and rivers just chillin

red willow
#

trails are like nirvana to me

soft violet
#

@floral viper The first night of methotrexate was...eventful, in that I got out of bed to be ill and ended up coming to with my arse in the air and my face pressed into the carpet. My body adjusted. The diclofenac was a constant bad. Not on it now.

solid elbow
#

I've had such hit-or-miss experiences with weed that I mostly avoid it. I'll bum off friends but I don't feel comfortable passing a bowl these days, heh

red willow
#

I went for about 7 miles today

#

felt great

empty prism
#

hell of a storytelling style you got there Opal

hazy void
#

Anyone knows how to solve th Rubik's cube

empty prism
#

I used to...

floral viper

@floral viper The first night of methotrexate was...eventful, in that I got out of bed to be ill and ended up coming to with my arse in the air and my face pressed into the carpet. My body adjusted. The diclofenac was a constant bad. Not on it now.
@soft violet Yeah methotrexate does that 😄 Shit is made from mustard gas believe it or not

quick ledge
#

used to solve

scenic blaze
#

Yes, there are people who know how to solve a rubik's cube

red willow
#

an actual Rubik's cube?

hazy void
#

No

solid elbow
#

I have a friend who's a speed cuber.

quick ledge
#

no a fake one

#

coool

hazy void
#

A 3x3

red willow
#

a virtual one?

empty prism
#

probably one of the far better, cheaper alternatives

soft violet
#

@floral viper I did not know that.

red willow
#

might be tough to explain on here

scenic blaze
#

Code a virtual rubik's solver

quick ledge
#

ez

hazy void
#

a virtual one?
@red willow like, a puzzle with design of a Rubik's cube, can be any company

floral viper
empty prism
#

I call my program the sticker-remover

solid elbow
#

there's actually a simple algorithm for solving a rubik's cube. No configuration is more than... 31, I think? moves from solved.

hazy void
#

Code a virtual rubik's solver
@scenic blaze I wanna, but my laptop is dead, has to go for repair

red willow
#

how long have you been at it @hazy void ?

empty prism
#

f

hazy void
#

there's actually a simple algorithm for solving a rubik's cube. No configuration is more than... 31, I think? moves from solved.
@solid elbow 20

soft violet
#

@floral viper So it was the MTX and etanercept for a while, now it's MTX and adalimumab.

hazy void
#

how long have you been at it @hazy void ?
@red willow 1.5 months , sub 35 sec on 3x3

scenic blaze
#

I learned about bogosort the other day

red willow
#

oh wow

solid elbow
#

@hazy void thanks for the correction 🙂

scenic blaze
#

That's a fun algorithm to optimize

empty prism
#

"optimize"

scenic blaze
#

bogosort has the most impressive bestcase runtime I've ever seen

red willow
#

lots of perseverance there

empty prism
#

lol

hazy void
#

Or make a database of 43quintillion moves, then u don't need to solve, just give the solution

empty prism
#

man, don't make me get sucked into a sorting algorithm youtube rabbithole again

red willow
#

does Oracle handle 43 quintillion records?

hazy void
#

Just so u kno, 43 quintillion possible permutations on 3x3

#

A quantum comp may

empty prism
#

@hazy void you're reminding me of the dude at my work who tried to make a database table that mapped the distance of every ZIP code to every other ZIP code to get a 30 mile radius app thing to work...

scenic blaze
#

Just get a 4 dimensional database, ez

soft violet
#

@red willow If it doesn't, nesting. Boom. Solved.

red willow
#

may I borrow this quantum computer?

scenic blaze
#

and by that I mean a database that operates at different points along the timeline

hazy void
#

Also, the number of possible permutations on 6x6 cube, is more then the number of atoms in the world

#

10^80 atoms in the universe*

empty prism
#

my sister collects puzzle cubes, those things get weird

hazy void
#

I have a megaminx, a 3x3 dodecahedron

scenic blaze
#

number of atoms in the world versus the universe are two very different things

solid elbow
#

@empty prism and that's why everyone needs at least one DS&A course, heh

floral viper
#

Did you guys know that people got killed over dodecahedrons back in the day?

lost frigate
#

Nope

#

Can someone help me out

hazy void
#

Why did u spell ir wrong, nope

empty prism
#

@solid elbow no course in the world could help that dude. If not for my NDA, I would post some of his source code and we could all have a good cry

soft violet
#

Six squares are set.

lost frigate
#

I’m bored and only have my phone what can I do?

scenic blaze
#

Throw it up in the air, spin around, and catch it

empty prism
#

smut

scenic blaze
#

Then try it blindfolded

strange barn
#

my frozen tea bag truly spilled

solid elbow
#

Oh, have I seen some bad code...

lost frigate
#

No I have to be quiet rn

empty prism
#

gdi Bees get a hold of yourself!

lost frigate
#

I’m not supposed to be up

scenic blaze
#

I work with bad code everyday, this is my life and no, it's not mine

solid elbow
empty prism
#

read a book

red willow
#

meditate

lost frigate
#

I hate meditation

empty prism
#

read a book on the phone I mean, plenty o good apps for that

red willow
#

sounds like you aren't open to new adventures then.......

floral viper
#

@solid elbow I have not 😄 Seems like one of them dangerous geometries also though 😄

scenic blaze
#

go to sleep

soft violet
#

How are you on procrastination?

lost frigate
#

True I have a hardy boys book I could ready

#

I’ve tried meditation and it did nothing

solid elbow
#

It's the other regular 20-sided polyhedron 😄

red willow
#

maybe go to bed then

empty prism
#

the guy who wrote p much our entire codebase didn't know what a set was, so he used a lot of dictionaries with empty keys

scenic blaze
#

Eh, close enough

solid elbow
#

Nailed It!

scenic blaze
#

(empty values, I assume you meant)

empty prism
#

yeah, thems words and stuff

lost frigate
#

Like what is supposed to even happen when u meditate @red willow

rough sapphire
#

Hello!

solid elbow
#

(seriously the CPython implementation of set is a dict without values)

scenic blaze
#

^

floral viper
#

It always cracks me up that there was a cult of mathematicians in ancient greece that killed people over dodecahedrons and hid em away in a cave because it was considered "dangerous knowledge"

empty prism
#

the other fun thing is when he would set a boolean in a dictionary, but only do a membership test for the key when he needed to check it

soft violet
#

@lost frigate Monkey catching.

lost frigate
#

Lol

scenic blaze
#

This sounds like a creative person

empty prism
#

great vi hart video about pythagorkladsa whatever his name is

#

creative is a word for it...

scenic blaze
#

Making the most with his knowledge

solid elbow
#

pucch, that cult of Pythagoras's?

empty prism
#

which was indeed limited

floral viper
#

@solid elbow Yeah

empty prism
#

If I ever meet the dude I'mma stab him with a rust fork. So many headaches and lost hours...

lost frigate
#

Wtf

solid elbow
#

I knew they had some weird stuff, but the dodecahedron part is new to me.

scenic blaze
#

I know how you feel

lost frigate
#

Oh nvm

#

Dirk where this is going

empty prism
#

I think we all have one of those in a "professional" environment

floral viper
#

@solid elbow I remember it from one of the cosmos episodes I watched a few years ago. The one with Carl Sagan

solid elbow
#

Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live.

empty prism
#

lol

lost frigate
#

Lol

floral viper
#

@solid elbow Lol Im a start using that

lost frigate
#

So never code

floral viper
#

Trying to get the junior devs to code properly

empty prism
#

^ tbh tho...

solid elbow
#

the biggest difference between academia and industry is adjusting for a world where you need to read other people's code, and vice versa

#

turns out that's a very different set of skills than just coding

empty prism
#

for sure

#

especially when people like to write comprehensions 4 layers deep just to flex on the rest of us

floral viper
#

In my experience the code need to be maintainable even after you have passed away also. As shown by the recent demand for cobol programmers from new jersey

solid elbow
#

"comprehension" and "layers" are words that shouldn't go together

quick ledge
#

godlygeek, what do you work as?

empty prism
#

you should meet my coworker lol

solid elbow
#

@floral viper who the government asked to work for free.

lost frigate
#

Imagine this

empty prism
#

imagine being a cobol programmer from the goodness of your heart...

floral viper
#

@solid elbow Cheapskates eh? 😄

lost frigate
#

There was a channel in the server where I could actually be useful

scenic blaze
#

Help channels make me feel like I'm bad at teaching

lost frigate
#

Lol

empty prism
#

samesies

#

I talk in circles a lot...

lost frigate
#

I just don’t know what I’m doing

empty prism
#

who really does

lost frigate
#

Lol

floral viper
#

I have come to the realization that I am not good enough to be of use in help 😄

#

At least not in python
