Working from home the last few months has definitely made me realize it's time for a monitor upgrade. I am also working my first job as an actual code writer, I am a data engineer. I am just looking for peoples' opinions of monitors. I have listed out some of the ones I am looking at and really just want to know whether people prefer a monitor with

LG 34WK650-W 34"
Dell Ultrasharp U2718Q 27"
ASUS PB287Q 28"
LG 34WN80C-B 34"

Alternatively if you have an ultra gangster monitor that you can use for hours on end without eye strain and without spending half the day switching windows and looking for hidden ones please let me know. It's also worth mentioning that I don't really want to spend over 400-500 dollars on this.

#

I have three Dell U2417H monitors myself

#

24-inch UltraSharps

#

they're pretty great and come factory calibrated if you're doing graphical work

#

I think this model is discontinued but there'll be newer ones

flat aspen
#

I am a data engineer by trade so I do lots of dev work

#

not a lot of graphical work, but I will also use them for gaming occasionally

#

Alright, does anyone wanna see a trick

#

Okay, I'll show it anyways

#

<@&352427296948486144>

#

Cool huh

flat aspen
#

whats the trick

quick ledge
#

i think its that mention

flat aspen
#

oh

quick ledge
#

and the fact that it did nothing

flat aspen
#

very cool @rough sapphire

quick ledge
#

btw all of us should have been pinged

#

as all of us are developers

#

but the mods have disabled it

flat aspen
#

weak

wheat lynx
#

It would have been a cooler trick if everybody was pinged

#

Not in a good way

flat aspen
#

agreed

#

oh well I guess

quick ledge
#

wookie can you enable pinging of developers?

#

asking for a friend

wheat lynx
#

No I cannot

#

lol

quick ledge
#

oof

flat aspen
#

@wheat lynx what is it you would say you "do" here lol

quick ledge
#

he's a helper

#

he helps

flat aspen
#

I know, just being silly

quick ledge
#

pretty helpful actually

#

good dude

#

idk

wheat lynx
#

Uhh, I'm a helper and a moderator, so yeah, I help people who need helping and moderate people who need moderating

flat aspen
#

good to know!!

#

I promise I am not trash talking lol

quick ledge
#

hey wookie, are you a star wars fan or a power rangers fan?

#

or neither?

flat aspen
#

STAR RANGERS!!!!

rough sapphire
#

You can ping anything and anyone

wheat lynx
#

Well... I like star wars, but I haven't watched power rangers for ages. I wouldn't really call myself a fan of either

quick ledge
#

oh ok

rough sapphire
#

<@&267630620367257601>

#

Ha

quick ledge
#

damn

#

I'm sweating for you

#

that's not a ping tho ,is it?

rough sapphire
#

Haha it's just an illusion

#

It's fake

quick ledge
#

yeah, it doesn't feel like a link

rough sapphire
#

It wouldn't have been a link even if I had actually pinged

#

You can just copy the ID of the role by right clicking on it

#

And then do <@&id>

#

And boom

quick ledge
#

Yeah I'm not gonna try

#

@quick ledge

#

<@&562601836591185930>

#

cool cool cool cool cool

stiff thicket
#

Wait the helper ping gonna be bad

gentle moss
#

i know i'm late but @flat aspen

#

[14:11] gdude: 24-inch UltraSharps

#

dell's IPS screens are excellent

#

and the high end ones come with really good stands

flat aspen
#

@gentle moss not late my dude, im still looking around. Thank you very much

#

I actually think I am down to these two monitors S2719DGF vs U2719DX

gentle moss
#

i'd take the u27

flat aspen
#

yeah thats the one I am leaning towards currently, comparing the two now

gentle moss
#

i wont even go back to TN panels

#

the image quality is uhh...

#

washed out

flat aspen
#

whats the difference between TN and IPS monitors

gentle moss
#

IPS panels have much better colour depths

flat aspen
#

I honestly havent looked at monitors in so long

#

gotch, thanks

gentle moss
#

contrast ratio on IPS is better too

#

plus if you're not gaming with it, you probably don't need a high hz panel

flat aspen
#

the gaming I do isn't crazy requirements, stuff like terraria and binding of isaac where a high hz doesnt really make a differnce

#

IMO

gentle moss
#

also you may be able to find those Ultrasharp dells for cheap from a refurbish provider

#

i got mine from a refurb company with no stands

flat aspen
#

Mostly looking for something that will make parallel development and research easier and something for light gaming and movies/videos

gentle moss
#

then just got myself a VESA stand for like £25

flat aspen
#

nice

gentle moss
#

retail the one i was getting was like £250

#

i got it for £130 as a refurb with no stand

flat aspen
#

oh thats awesome

gentle moss
#

and it's a high quality refurb too, only a tiny scratch on the back

flat aspen
#

yeah retail right now is $374 for one and I think I want two

gentle moss
#

if you can get them standless or something from a refurb place you could get something like uhhh

flat aspen
#

ill check around, thanks for the advice. Yeah I will likely get a stand like that so finding them without mounts would be the best

gentle moss
#

👌

#

good way to save money, businesses go bankrupt and shit all the time then sell them in cheap job lots

flat aspen
#

looks like the same monitor just a 25" version

#

comparing the two it actually looks better based on the numbers

#

plus that site has super low prices because the grade is B due to surface scratches and blemishes in the LCD panel itself....not sure how I feel about that though

gentle moss
#

that's some good discount

#

yeah, i wouldn't get the lower grade stuff

#

scratches on panel is errrrg

flat aspen
#

Grade B LCD screens have small surface scratches and blemishes in/on the LCD panel. These are not typically noticeable when the screen is on but are present.

undone berry
#

pssst - don't bother with 16x9 qhd

flat aspen
#

yeah if it were just the housing I wouldnt care

undone berry
#

just get an ultrawide monitor

flat aspen
#

be the actual screen is iffty

undone berry
#

they're where it's at

flat aspen
#

lmao

undone berry
#

honestly, ultrawides are great

flat aspen
#

that would mean I only need one instead of two

gentle moss
#

i prefer two

#

then you can orient them how you like

undone berry
#

That's exactly what I did - switched from two 16x9s to one ultrawide

gentle moss
#

side by side, one in portrait, whatever

undone berry
#

and I infinitely prefer it

flat aspen
#

@gentle moss I agree with that orientation statement because I typically like one vertical for coding

gentle moss
#

i move my screens a bunch depending on what i'm doing

flat aspen
#

allows me to see more of the source at once

gentle moss
#

btw here's my shed fix

#

last tenant left a green recycling bin full of rocks

flat aspen
#

omg what happened to your shed lol

gentle moss
#

the floor rotted so now one side wall is splaying out

undone berry
#

your shed is a bin?

gentle moss
#

now that ~120kg wheelie bin full of rocks is holding it in place

flat aspen
#

oof @undone berry lol

gentle moss
#

well the bin is now part of the structural integrity of the shed

#

soo.... yes. partly.

flat aspen
#

what about some metal straps?

undone berry
#

this is some prime hillbilly architecture

flat aspen
#

pretty cheap bandaid

undone berry
#

redneck engineering - that's the expression

gentle moss
#

yeeeaaaah, the base is super rotten so i'm not sure metal stripping would do much better than this

#

i was going to just use a bunch of 2x4 and some screws

flat aspen
#

lmao sounds like its time to brush up on your wood workiung

gentle moss
#

pffft. i inherited this shed from a tenant who hasn't lived here in a decade

#

same as that fucking wheelie bin full of rocks

flat aspen
#

lmao

undone berry
#

Is the shed covered as part of the letting agreement?

#

I assume not

gentle moss
#

nope

#

they didn't even get permission to put it up

undone berry
#

It's very fun tearing things down

#

could just do that

gentle moss
#

yes but then i wont have a shed

undone berry
#

but it's expensive to get rid of the shit

gentle moss
#

eh, i live like 2 minutes drive from the tip

#

wouldn't take long to clear out a shed.

#

but i'd need another shed

undone berry
#

what do you have in there?

gentle moss
#

bikes, lawnmower, mountainboards, bbq stuff

#

some garden tools

#

shed stuff

undone berry
#

hmmm - obviously you don't want to donate the landlord a new shed

flat aspen
#

yeah I need a new shed too honestly but I can't be bothered to pay the amount of money places ask for the buy a prebuilt one

gentle moss
#

exactly, pre-built sheds are quite expensive

#

i have the capacity to build a shed, but as charlie says

flat aspen
#

and while building a new one is not hard, it is very time consuming if you do it alone

gentle moss
#

i don't want to give whoever lives here next a nice new shed

undone berry
#

prebuilt ones are usually shite

gentle moss
#

i couldn't transport it to a new place if i moved without renting a van or something

#

yeah well

undone berry
#

best option would be something that could be taken down once it's up

gentle moss
#

exhibit A

#

my fucking shed

undone berry
#

but that's also a shit option

gentle moss
#

hmmm....

flat aspen
#

nah easiest cheapest option is to leave the bin full of rocks

#

lmao

gentle moss
#

maybe if i had welding equipment i might be bothered to make a new shed

#

as practice

#

i mean yeah, the bin full of rocks works far better than expected

flat aspen
#

so it works but its not pretty and needs to be replaced

#

but it works

#

...

gentle moss
#

i don't even own that bin, it's the councils

undone berry
#

get a van - park the van in you back garden

#

boom

#

shed on wheels

flat aspen
#

haha

gentle moss
#

but the council wont take it away

#

because it's full of rocks and mud

#

we had to buy a second wheelie bin for our garden waste

flat aspen
#

alright guys, thank you both for the help and fun conversation. Sadly I have to get to work now. Adios

gentle moss
#

no problem, happy hunting on the monitor

flat aspen
#

👌

#

good luck with the shed

gentle moss
#

idk what you're talking about there aren't any problems with my shed anymore

plucky ridge
#

So you were able to shed some light on the situation?

gentle moss
#

the light had been shed, you just weren't here to see it

#

i used a bin full of rocks hemlock

#

the technological solution

plucky ridge
#

I mean.... isn't that what a computer is?

#

Just a bin full of rocks and metal?

opaque raptor
#

@bright valve

bright valve
#

Gans cores are pretty tricky to assemble tho
quarter and corner cutting is great too

plucky ridge
#

True, they are special rocks

opaque raptor
#

gan in my opinion just sucks

rough sapphire
#

ping if FRED

#

XD

opaque raptor
#

they release the same cubes every 2 months

rough sapphire
#

@lament goblet

opaque raptor
#

I wouldn't say that corner cutting is any good

#

after than xs is just...meh

#

like I bought and air sm, and it sucked

#

but good for turning practice

plucky ridge
#

Is this the next level of fidget spinners?

opaque raptor
#

what...

#

we were talking about cubing

gentle moss
#

yes hemlock

#

i have a +100kg computer in my garden but it wont boot

solid pollen
#

Wait what

quick ledge
#

just slap some linux on it

#

u can dump bodies in /dev/null now

gentle moss
#

i tried to troubleshoot it, but it's too damn heavy

broken charm
#

guys, I'm having trouble with something regarding the code jam

#

specially the datetime.datetime object

solid pollen
#

Ah, I'm afraid we can't help you with the qualifier

broken charm
#

yes! okay

gentle moss

plucky ridge

#

Makes life so much easier

#

Both the band and the library

gentle moss
#

i like the way you can't tell any of their songs apart

plucky ridge
#

Dude

#

How dare you

#

I'll agree with that on some of their other albums, but In Silico was amazing

gentle moss
#

it's a good joke

plucky ridge
gentle moss
#

i mean it's just generic drum and bass with some really nice production

#

i like dnb

plucky ridge
#

The lyrics are pretty good too

#

The other albums are a lot more DnB than In Silico was, though

#

IS had a bit more rock, at least to me

#

I might just be grasping at straws trying to defend them, though

gentle moss
#

when did that come out? not sure i've listened to them in a very long time

plucky ridge
#

Pffff...... 2008ish?

#

Hold on, let me check

#

Yep, got it in one

#

12th of May, 2008

gentle moss
#

oh, that's earlier than i would've thought

plucky ridge
#

Huh, for some reason I didn't realize they were Australian

gentle moss
#

i guess i only really heard hold your colour

#

yeah, they are

#

that's probably why it sounds so generic. it's really hard to get inspiration when everything is just dirt

#

¬_¬

plucky ridge
#

I don't know, you can get inspiration from the constant onslaught of fauna trying to kill you

gentle moss
#

that is true, murder magpies

plucky ridge
#

And spiders

#

And jellyfish

gentle moss
#

well the jellyfish one is easy

#

don't go in the sea

plucky ridge
#

Well sure when you apply logic to it

gentle moss
#

i always found dnb fun to make

#

nice and evenly structured

#

just go through the motions and add in some shit

plucky ridge
#

Yeah, hard to claim it's complex

#

But there's something satisfying about it

gentle moss
#

we like predictable music, it makes us feel good

#

unpredictable music just makes us feel confused and angry

#

this has been a massive generalisation

plucky ridge
#

Country makes me angry

#

And yet bluegrass doesn't....

gentle moss
#

because you can probably tell where an entire country song is going by the title or first verse

quick ledge
#

Country roads

plucky ridge
#

I'm sorry, may I present to you "What's new pussycat?"

quick ledge
#

take me home

gentle moss
#

uurrrgggg

#

when i was busking in a pub garden for free drinks i had to play that so much

plucky ridge
#

I could see you just losing it one of those times and replacing everything with a swear

undone berry
#

bisk busking? what was bisk busking for? bisque?

gentle moss
#

bisk busked for beer

#

although not because i can't drink it

plucky ridge
#

bisk brusquely busking and basking

gentle moss
#

it was pints of cider with a shot of vodka dropped in it

plucky ridge
#

Good way to ruin cider

gentle moss
#

it was not good cider anyway

plucky ridge
#

Strongbow?

gentle moss
#

stowford press is just one step above strongbow

#

hah

#

strongbow gives me headaches after a single pint

plucky ridge
#

Strongbow tastes like mushy apples

#

It's horrible

gentle moss
#

that's because it's not real cider

#

it's made from concentrate iirc

plucky ridge
#

Shit, I liked scrumpy more than I did Strongbow

gentle moss
#

scrumpy jack beats out stowford

plucky ridge
#

It's so find to hard here in the states

gentle moss
#

if i had to pick a cider it'd probably be Henry Weston's Vintage

plucky ridge
#

I've found scrumpy ONCE

#

And it was the best thing I've ever tasted

gentle moss
#

which is probably even harder to find in the states

plucky ridge
#

Yeah the name isn't familiar to me

gentle moss
#

i think it's brewed in the county next to me

#

yeah, it is

plucky ridge
#

Does Angry Orchard make its way over to you guys?

gentle moss
#

i went on a trip to their uhhh

#

original brewery

#

free samples make you forget

plucky ridge
#

HA

gentle moss
#

yeah, we get angry orchard

plucky ridge
#

Thoughts on it?

#

I like it, but then again we don't have a lot of choices here

gentle moss
#

i think it's okay

#

had to be selfie, my beard looks too mightly not to share

plucky ridge
#

You know, I've been playing Far Cry 5, and I've seen quite a fair share of people in that game that look a lot like you do now

#

Also that looks awesome

gentle moss
#

good flavour to it

#

this is only the 7% one, but they've got an 8.6% one with more of a kick to it

plucky ridge
#

I need to try and track down some legitimate pear cider as well

gentle moss
#

made from 100% pear?

plucky ridge
#

I've had a couple times and fell in love

#

Yeah

gentle moss
#

that's called perry

#

¬_¬

plucky ridge
#

Most of them are a cocktail of apple and pear

#

Wait, really

gentle moss
#

yes

#

if you make cider like you'd make cider but use only pears

#

it's perry

plucky ridge
#

Neat

#

I'm down

gentle moss
#

also that was a reference to a really long and dumb joke a comedian made about a really shit advert

#

"pear cider made from 100% pear"

#

it's pears

#

he drags that joke out for like fucking 30 minutes

#

synthesises a breakdown over the authenticity of the phrase and such.

plucky ridge
#

That's like... Family Guy level

gentle moss
#

eh, way not.

#

it's a guy called stewart lee and he's actually funny.

plucky ridge
#

Just beating a joke until there's no movement left and then going another 10 minutes after

#

Still 30 minutes...

gentle moss
#

oh trust me it works without being too much

#

he's consistently considered one of the best comedians in the UK but has practically no notoriety.

#

which is also part of his schtick.

plucky ridge
#

The best artists aren't appreciated during their time

gentle moss
#

you'd have thought after like 30 years he'd be a bit better known

#

:D

undone berry
#

that's why I have so few followers right now

gentle moss
#

oh trust me we're preparing the monuments

#

just waiting for that clock to tick out

undone berry
#

that and the fact I make nothing that can be considered art

plucky ridge
#

I'll have it next to the world's smallest violin

gentle moss
#

i mean... i wont forget about you

#

i still haven't eaten your chilli

#

so don't die just yet

plucky ridge
#

No matter how much he drinks

#

Damn it, you're too fast

gentle moss
#

i actually got a food delivery too so now i have all the stuff needed to safely post food

#

i was like "aw sweet, a polystyrene box for transporting food and some ice packs. i will send charlies chilli in this."

plucky ridge
#

Oh those packs that have the mysterious blue liquid in them that you freeze for lunch boxes?

gentle moss
#

yeah but this one looks more like a bunch of tide pods stuck together in a grid

plucky ridge
#

More surface area for quicker freezing. Makes sense.

#

Probably just as delicious, too

quick ledge
#

nah

#

doesn't have much flavour

gentle moss
#

wont get that delicious lipid breakdown

quick ledge
#

yeah

gentle moss
#

i love it when my food binds to all the fat to the water in my body

plucky ridge
#

Shed those pounds!

#

Actually hold on, if you lose a bunch of weight, would that be passing a stone?

gentle moss
#

:|

plucky ridge
#

Because.... it's a measurement of weight...

#

Whelp, I tried

gentle moss
#

sometimes taking part doesn't count

plucky ridge
#

My wife said the same thing

gentle moss
#

is that why you got the cat pillow?

#

¬_¬

quick ledge
#

LMAOO

plucky ridge
#

She had a coupon

#

Or was there a sale...

#

Can't remember which

#

Shit, I forgot to take a picture of it with the hat

gentle moss
#

:D

plucky ridge
gentle moss
#

hahaha

plucky ridge
#

It weirdly looks good on him

#

Oh guys, I just figured out why I do 2 spaces after a period.

gentle moss
#

auto space after a full stop

plucky ridge
#

So my mom was a secretary and used a typewriter a lot, and at that time, 2 spaces was the required method. And when she taught me to type, that's what she passed on

gentle moss
#

that's... that's weirder

rough sapphire
#

unpopular opinion: typewrites are really cool

gentle moss
#

that's not unpopular

plucky ridge
#

That's not unpopular at all

#

They're such a marvel of engineering

gentle moss
#

they're incredible feats of mechanical engineering

rough sapphire
#

Also i love the sound they make

plucky ridge
#

We all do

rough sapphire
#

Eargasm to me 😔

gentle moss
#

they make your fingers big and strong too

plucky ridge
#

Well, provided you're using a mechanical one like that yeah

#

We had an electric one where all the letters were on this half sphere that would spin around to the right letter as you typed

#

Let you easily change the font that way, too

#

Ahhhh, okay

#

So it's partially because of the advent of non-monospaced fonts that we now use one space instead

#

The differentiation makes a lot more sense when every character is the same width and the risk of your eyes just glazing over missing where a sentence ends is more likely

gentle moss
#

i mean i never thought about it but i have seen double spaces after full stops about the place

plucky ridge
#

Besides from me?

undone berry
#

Double spaces after a full stop is an old people thing

gentle moss
#

hemlock is old people now

#

haha, i'm young.

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry You can't see it, but I'm shaking my cane at you

#

Damn kids and your MySpaces and Faceybooks...

honest star
#

Depending on the style guide you use it could be one space or two. I know for some reports, depending on the required style I had to change each sentence to either two or one spaces after a period.

plucky ridge
#

I just know I get a lot of flak both here and in some code I write for using double

undone berry
#

you should just do what i do - have no sentences or clauses - and separate everything with hyphens - i like it

versed saffron
#

double hyphens are underrated

bleak rain
#

thinkmon can you overload discord bot command functions?

plucky ridge
#

no idea

rough sapphire
#

@bleak rain 🤔 What legitimate reason would you even use that for

bleak rain
#

Well, I am using a decorator that wraps discord's .command decorator and passes some additional stuff

#

Which yoinks user arguments

rough sapphire
#

Oh, I misread that

#

Disregard 😄

bleak rain
#
def tinker_command(alias, fileinfo, pass_slice, overwrite_returned):
"""Pass additional args to a bot command (after ctx)"""
    def decorator_tinker_command(func):
        @bot.command(name=func.__name__, help=func.__doc__, annotes=func.__annotations__, aliases=[alias])
        async def wrapped(ctx, *args, **kwargs):
            path, args = (tinker_path, args) if fileinfo.tinkerfile else (args[0], args[1:]) # filespecs set
            with open(path, fileinfo.mode) as f:
if pass_slice: # Now we need additional args parsing...
                    slice_obj, args = slice_from_string(args[0]), args[1:]
ret = await func(ctx, fileobj, pass_slice, *args, **kwargs)
                else: # Or not...
ret = await func(ctx, fileobj, *args, **kwargs)

                # Now we check for overwriting
                if overwrite_returned:
                    f.seek(0)
                    f.truncate(0)
                    f.writelines(ret)

            return ret
        return wrapped
    return decorator_tinker_command
#

Haven't actually tested this version of the deco though

#

Doing this in vim is pure torture

#

I'm just using insert mode and trying to get used to the lack of IDE

graceful basin
#

if you do :imap jk <ESC> you can use jk to leave insert mode rather than escape

#

which makes vim actually usable

bleak rain
#

that keybinding makes a lot of sense

gleaming hare
#

i hate when youtube just when you are watching a video just stops and says. "Audio error. Reboot the PC." Like wtf dude, i am in a discord call, listening to music on iTunes, playing minecraft, and youtube says that i have to reboot my pc while i could just restart the browser

#

tldr: why dose youtube say "reboot the pc" if an audio error happens on YT

bleak rain
#

Audio stuff with computers in general is super janky

#

Can't believe it's still this irritating in 2000+20

plucky ridge
#

I kind of can

#

In that situation, which bit of sound takes precedence over the other? Do you just smash them all together? Can you do it quick enough that you'll stay in sync with the expected timing?

#

Then there's retranslating it back to analog

bleak rain
#

That's fair

#

I just get irritated a lot because of how bluetooth interacts with everything

plucky ridge
#

Sure but how many devices are you typically tied to at a time?

#

Most I can personally think of is maybe 4

#

And that's mainly for game controllers on consoles

I'm confused tbh

I have a couple of small ones.

Oh, Geoid is the word I'm looking for

#

Geode is a volcanic rock-ish thing

plucky ridge

The rock that has crystals inside, yeah

Usually from minerals left over from water that was inside that slowly evaporated and built up over time

(I used to be a bit obsessed with them)

Yep, interlaced and.... um... p

afaik

plucky ridge

Yeah that's it

round rose

pretty goood

rough sapphire

the p stands for progressive scan, i.e. non-interlaced.

#

Yooo anyone here able to help me with some really basic html?

undone berry
#

Who knows

#

Best bet is to ask

undone berry
#

has anyone here ever watched the Utopia TV series?

#

it's coming back as a reboot on Amazon, and i remember enjoying the first one - and also remember astoundingly little about it beyond some bright colours

#

i remember it being very violent

undone berry
#

Yeah. I remember a few bits of stylized violence. I really hope the amazon series lives up

He’s just... there... to draw attention with his idiocy

#

FYI, nice R2-D2 pic

Love me some star wars

empty aurora
#

😅 thanks

spiral ridge
#

yeah that r2-d2 pic is epic

empty aurora
#

So I come from a spreadsheet to R to Python kind of background, so I absolutely adore Pandas

dense rock
#

Understood, I was in a similar place a few years ago, spreadsheet->IDL->matlab->python

empty aurora
#

I don't have any real world experience with web app building as I am not a developer professionally. Most of my experience is from personal projects

#

So I was building this portfolio management app a month or so ago and I wanted to calculate the returns

#

So a person can have multiple transactions in each stock and multiple stocks. And I want to show the returns of each stock individually. So I wrote an XIRR function which used Numpy. Using Pandas, it was very easy to pass transactions to this function by simply doing a groupby using the stock name and calling the XIRR function on this list

#

Would something like this be faster if I avoided Pandas and passed the transactions as a list or a dict?

dense rock
#

That would be something you'd want to do directly in the database for performance

#

SQL is probably capable of doing most of the math needed for returns

empty aurora
#

But XIRR calculation is an iterative calculation which uses an optimisation function, only possible through a for or a while loop. Does SQL support that sort of thing?

dense rock
#

ehh yes and no. You could likely do it with a stored procedure but those are not great for maintainability reasons.

#

So you would want to pull in raw data in python native data types and then use your XIRR function in Numpy, no pandas needed.

#

I think of pandas as a convenience on numpy

#

there's very little it adds besides ease of use and speed for prototyping

empty aurora
#

That's true. I'm not so familiar with numpy myself, have no idea how I'd do a groupby in numpy

dense rock
#

groupby is a convenience really, you can accomplish the same thing by just iterating your data and creating groups.

#

I just live in a different world, I build APIs for large websites and so responses are needed in tens of milliseconds. There can be no wasted cycles for convenience for anything that has to be in a request. Using pandas just to munge some data for an ecommerce website would make it painfully slow very quickly

empty aurora
#

terribly sorry, I got a phone call and couldn't reply

empty aurora
#

I'll try simulating the groupby calculation using Numpy.
Pandas just feels so familiar and the pd.read_sql and df.to_sql make things so convenient that I kept using it for my personal project

@half mural would you consider your discord bot framework a good way to start using async if someone has never used those features before?

half mural
#

@half mural would you consider your discord bot framework a good way to start using async if someone has never used those features before?
@worn rampart yeah, it makes the asyncio part relatively easy too ^^

worn rampart
#

hm, i might take a look at it at some point then.

#

what big differences / improvements does it offer over discord.py?

#

and the other bot framework out there, i forget its name

half mural
#

what big differences / improvements does it offer over discord.py?
@worn rampart I think they're all listed in the readme ^^ but basically it offers tight integration with Django to allow you to intuitively store your data

#

And the rest is listed on the readme

worn rampart
#

interesting. so it's a bot + django hybrid framework?

#

going to look back at the framework now

#

From what I'm reading of the cogs section, it seems like cogs are generally compatible between your bot and discord.py

#

you might want to stress that more

#

it'd help increase adoption

small fossil
#

I used to run one of my bots with a django backend

#

altho it made working on stuff pretty easy because you could restart the backend in a fraction of the time as the front end which actually logs in.

nah - the smell is on the people opening it

i've never smelled it and can't imagine smelling it

undone berry

there's the guy who opened it in his car and that essentially wrote the car off

that tells me enough to know that I never want to smell it

gentle moss
#

i have a finnish friend whose whole apartment block got stunk out by someone who opened a can

it was a fucking ~14 story build

undone berry

the way you're meant to do it is opening it submerged in a bucket of water in the back garden

gentle moss

undone berry

good point

i can see why opening it under water helps

gentle moss

duck and goose eggs are incredibly rich

yeah that's why you have beans as a side

plucky ridge

I'm what one would call a lazy boy

scrambled eggs are very basic, easy to make stuff

beans+egg+toast is more effort than it's worth

Whereas a medium rare egg takes time, patience, effort. and then you screw it up anyway and make scrambled because lol I ain't getting more eggs out

plucky ridge

And the fact that I can have them for breakfast is just a bonus

#

@rough sapphire I feel like you just described some of my relationships

rough sapphire
#

That's deep.

you fuck up frying an egg?

@plucky ridge based on what I've heard you say about food, I think you'd like UK food

What kind of psychos am I talking to 👀

prescramble, mix with butter and milk

gentle moss

if you fried an egg and then just cut it up into tiny chunks

plucky ridge

Otherwise you're just making over-hard eggs

undone berry

that's what you got to do

gentle moss

that's not scrambled egg

you just fucked up cooking an egg

rough sapphire

Hell no, that's way too complicated

undone berry
#

I'm shocked Scott

shocked

rough sapphire
#

Butter the pan, crack the egg, wham bam, ya gotcha self an egg

undone berry
#

scrambled eggs are the easiest thing to cook

plucky ridge
#

Wha.... bu...How is putting egg in bowl and hitting with fork difficult?

gentle moss
#

you just said scrambled eggs were easy food

#

and now it's too complicated to do it properly?

plucky ridge
#

I also add a little milk

undone berry
#

i'm so baffled

rough sapphire
#

You scrambled on the pan

high verge

here we go

rough sapphire

No one got time for that prep work

gentle moss

that's not a scrambled egg man

plucky ridge
#

@high verge Oh man that's a classic

it genuinely makes me laugh out loud every time i see it

undone berry

the prep work can be done in the pan

#

and then add heat

high verge

cream is good

gentle moss
high verge

'liquid'

undone berry

plucky ridge
#

He'd put some on the top of it when he baked it

undone berry
#

From ages like 10-16 I "cooked" and ate that all the time

and just haven't done it in years

plucky ridge

undone berry
#

Rice+beans+tomato is easy, good, and healthy

gentle moss
#

sure but it takes like 2 minutes to make scrambled egg and ketchup on toast

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge Not when you have a rice cooker

plucky ridge
#

Yes when you have a rice cooker

#

Do you not wash your rice?

gentle moss
#

maybe 1 minute if you fuck up the scrambled eggs

plucky ridge
#

Each individual grain, by hand

#

Little brush

rough sapphire
#

Oh sure, 100%

#

Got a rice cleanin' toothbrush and everything

gentle moss
#
