plucky ridge
#

Going to give myself a migraine

#

It's the bit on line 8 that's pitching the fit

stark prawn
#

() => addTick(IMAGE_STRINGS[key])

#

You are calling the function when initializing the component instead of on click.

plucky ridge
#

Oh god damn it

#

-headdesk-

#

It's so much easier to wrap my head around in Python

#

Thank you Grote

stark prawn
#

No problem.

#

Yeah, I guess the syntax differences made you overlook it.

plucky ridge
#

Yeah normally I would have done this with a partial but that's not really a thing here

#

Not going to lie, I won't be sad when this is done

stark prawn
#

I would probably go for functional components in cases like these.

plucky ridge
#

Sure sure. I'm just not sure how to do it with all this stuff

#

Okay, now I can't get the add-in to load. -deep breath- Okay, going to restart. Fingers crossed.

errant wyvern
#

who's Grote

stark prawn
#

That would be me.

errant wyvern
#

I know ohtnk

#

I've never saw you before here lol

plucky ridge
#

WHOOOOO

#

Significant progress!

stark prawn
#

Nice

idle night
#

Hello

rough sapphire
#

Ain't it a shame to be stoned on a monday ain't it a shame?

viral panther
#

No

#

It's a shame to be sober :(

plucky ridge
#

I probably should have looked into this step before anything else

#

It looks like all the "production" level add-in deployment options require a webserver to host the application on

viral panther
#

Can't you run it locally?

#

The server, I mean

plucky ridge
#

Should yeah, but apparently it's primarily meant for "development"

#

It genuinely feels like they hate their developers and want them to have a miserable time

#

"Oh, want to deploy things to your small business? Well, I hope you're all on Office 365 and managing everything through it, otherwise you're going to have a miserable time!"

rancid forge
#

@rough sapphire your idea from almost 2am my time is a really good idea. I think I'll try that

rough sapphire
#

sorry about the ping at such a late time

#

but do ping me if you implement it, want to see what it looks like

rancid forge
#

It's fine, discord decided that I can't get notified until just now so I just got like 6 notifications

rough sapphire
#

yeah it does that constantly for me

#

While there is definitely poor ping ettiquette, a time of day ping disturbing someone is a problem with that persons notification config. I wish more people understood that. Instead, because people feed every notification to their mobile on the level of the most important notifications they receieve, it makes this awkward feeling of, "Should I ping this person that I talk to right now to update them?"

#

And it shouldn't be like that. People should just configure their notifications better.

#

i don't particularly care if i ping someone at an inconvenient time, but it doesn't hurt to say sorry should it have bothered them

rancid forge
#

I'm fine with pings at any time, but I just might not get notified because notifications don't work

#

That is why I nicknamed myself with @able to identify that I am fine with it

rough sapphire
#

lol true. it doesnt seem like in this case either person was disturbed. But on Discord at large, if you ping someone, people have a way of acting like its rude sometimes.

#

IMO the line on rudeness is drawn by doing it to people 1) never talked to before, 2) more than once without a reply.

#

Thats basically it for me

rancid forge
#

That is good advice

#

@ everybody listen to good advice

rough sapphire
#

lol those are generally terrible and people who use them are bad admins šŸ˜›

rancid forge
#

@someone

plucky ridge
#

badmins

#

I hate having my fate in the hands of StackOverflow and the like

#

I always feel like my issues are so weirdly specific that there's no way I'm going to get an answer

#

Posting there and in two Microsoft servers and just praying at this point

lofty dirge
#

more Excel JS issues?

lofty dirge
#

do Excel Addins require hosting on web server?

plucky ridge
#

That's what the documentation seems to imply

lofty dirge
#

like it doesn't get loaded into Excel

#

you have thought me more about Excel then I ever used

plucky ridge
#

You can sideload them into Excel, but they seem to imply that's strictly for development purposes

lofty dirge
#

most of my Excel was just delivering the application

plucky ridge
#

So of those options, only a couple of them are viable

#

Looking through a couple other SO articles, but it's really still shaky on the details

#

At this point I'm likely to say fuck it and just do the sideloading

undone berry
#

Getting it on AppSource seems OK

plucky ridge
#

Possibly

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire

People should just configure their notifications better.
Explain how to do so? Considering I only seem to get desktop notifications. E-mail seems to have stopped completely after installing the Discord mobile app for five minutes, because they seem to think I now have push notifications or some such

#

If I can get e-mail for messages, that'd be great

lofty dirge
#

Sideloading seems fine

#

5 users, it's probably easiest

plucky ridge
#

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking....

#

Looking at the Office Store stuff it's.... yeah

#

Way overkill for something like this

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire I suppose my configuration is "off". So basically, until I decide to look at Discord, Discord doesn't bother me. I will get the text Desktop notification, but it won't make a sound or pop up (configured through KDE Plasma). So its impossible for anyone to bother me on Discord. You can ping me at any time and at my convenience, when I'm eventually back in Discord, I'll visually see the notification. I'll get back to whoever, without it being an annoyance on a phone or while I'm working. That's the way I find it to be best, but... I suppose if you have responsibility to Discord where you would like to see notifications in your email, maybe there is not as many options as there could be. But if what you are looking for is to specifically not be bothered, its pretty easy in my opinion.

#

Sometimes when I take extended breaks from Discord, this can cause people to feel like I

#

...am ignoring them, which is problematic in some ways.

#

But usually once someone knows my online habits, they know that I will reply when I get back on it.

#

I think it's better than the "Dont @ me" attitude you find because people are using it on their phone and not managing it interrupting them.

halcyon mantle
#

I think technologies like auto prediction and correction should not exist because they have negative influence on our learning, and writing skills overall.

Change my mind.

sand goblet
#

sorry what

#

I can't hear you over your crazy mobile typos

#

I touch-type and I'm pretty dang good at it

#

but on phone I make soooo many mistakes

#

if I didn't have autocorrect you would not be able to understand me

#

also, making mistakes and fixing them is a great way to learn that kind of thing

plucky ridge
#

I've learned how to spell some things properly BECAUSE of auto-correct

#

You can choose to learn from it or not, but highly doubt it's just a blanket bad

halcyon mantle
#

We are going to end up like this otherwise

#

From Wall-E

sand goblet
#

slippery slope argument is a pretty well-known fallacy

plucky ridge
#

Obviously. Because exercise and auto-correct go hand in hand

#

Makes PERFECT SENSE

sand goblet
#

we should be making tech easier to use

#

autocorrect won't help you if you don't know the language already

halcyon mantle
#

Ah, encouraging the manufacture of technology to make us lazy

#

And have it do everything for us

plucky ridge
#

Not at all. It's making what you do more efficient so that you have more time to do other stuff

#

Like exercise

#

Instead of being stuck in front of a computer for hours because the damn page won't load or you can't find the right option

sand goblet
#

I'm a big fan of physical interfaces and I hope that tech becomes easier to work with

halcyon mantle
#

You mean

#

Assisted bikes? Lol

sand goblet
#

We talked about some of tshirtman's work with kivy a while ago

#

and had a chat about the whiskey bar in heathrow airport

plucky ridge
#

Menu navigation via kickboxing

sand goblet
#

basically, it allows you to select a bottle of whiskey and set it down on this table-sized screen

#

and the screen knows where the bottle is and what the bottle is and provides info on it

#

or you can set two down for a comparison

#

this is a physical interface

stark prawn
#

I've seen such systems in musea

sand goblet
#

is that the plural of museum?

#

TIL

stark prawn
#

Idk, it is in dutch though.

sand goblet
#

if I'm looking at something like home assistant

#

like for example, you take heating control

#

it'd be nice to have a similar screen you can set stuff down on

plucky ridge
#

And have it by hijacked by people in a different nation

sand goblet
#

see information and manipulate it using physical objects

#

like eg you put a heating token onto a section of the screen

#

maybe you can rotate the token to change what the heating is set to

plucky ridge
#

What's wrong with just pressing the button to adjust up or down

sand goblet
#

well, that depends on whether you have a button

#

and also, it wouldn't be limited to heating

plucky ridge
#

Or adjusting the little lever

#

Or dial

stark prawn
#

But hem, the button is on the phone now.

sand goblet
#

something like home assistant encompasses everything smart in your house

plucky ridge
#

I mean I really think there are some things that are so simple to use they shouldn't NEED additional automation

stark prawn
#

Rip, it doens't include me 😦

sand goblet
#

right, but you need to consider that like

red willow
#

hey @sand goblet

plucky ridge
#

And it just feels like low-hanging fruit

sand goblet
#

first of all, it's useful to be able to get access to all of your stuff in a single place using a single interface

#

that's undeniable

plucky ridge
#

It's also useful for other people to have the same access

#

Also undeniable

sand goblet
#

but most of the systems that do that are not friendly for people that aren't computer literate

#

in some ways, computers in general aren't

plucky ridge
#

For a good reason. Most of them are still incredibly unsafe/not secure

sand goblet
#

I don't think that's a good reason not to try to make things accessible

plucky ridge
#

Right, but that just proves my point. Why would you give people something that's even more advanced and give people more ways to potentially fuck things over for your life?

#

Advanced in terms of power, not interface complexity

sand goblet
#

I don't see how "turn this physical dial" is more difficult than "find this app on your phone and set it up and such"

plucky ridge
#

It's not, and that's not my point

#

It's something already simple, but now it's simple with a backdoor

#

What you gain in convenience you lose in security

red willow
#

that is why crooks use burner phones

plucky ridge
#

You're putting a significant amount of faith in the manufacturer and other web systems that your system won't be compromised

sand goblet
#

In this case, I'm using a piece of software that already exists as a foundation

#

and.. it's pretty battle-tested

#

very active open source maintainers, very active community, frequent updates

halcyon mantle
#

I don’t mind putting my trust into a big company

plucky ridge
#

In this singular instance, sure

halcyon mantle
#

It’s their neck on the end of the line

plucky ridge
#

It's also yours

#

That's like saying if your car breaks down that it won't affect you, it's more the mechanic's problem than yours

#

Which isn't true. You're highly inconvenienced by the event

#

Someone else has to fix it, but you still pay the price

red willow
#

....insurance

plucky ridge
#

Insurance doesn't pay for lost time

red willow
#

😁

halcyon mantle
#

But nobody will buy a car that breaks down all the time

plucky ridge
#

Just financial compensation

#

If that was the case, pwn, then there wouldn't be any stories about vehicles that break down all the time

red willow
#

get out of here with your arcane logic

halcyon mantle
#

I’m not the one comparing something being hacked to a car breaking down

red willow
#

can a Tesla be hacked?

sand goblet
#

I mean the argument you're making is the argument to make about, well, really any kind of integrateable software

red willow
#

that might be a good analogy

sand goblet
#

security kinda goes without saying, it's important

plucky ridge
#

@sand goblet Yes. However you and I both know that IoT stuff has been rushed into consumer hands with little to no protections properly set up. I don't think that minor convenience is worth the potential risk at this current stage

#

That's my only real point

sand goblet
#

I mean I'm not saying I want someone else to do it

viral panther
#

Remember that time a casino for hacked because they had an unsecured thermometer in a fish tank?

red willow
#

no...

#

.go on though...

sand goblet
#

that's hilarious and believable

halcyon mantle
#

They are different though

red willow
#

I'm hoping there is a documentary about this

plucky ridge
#

Oh holy shit that's an actual thing

halcyon mantle
#

Lollll

plucky ridge
#

@halcyon mantle Which part specifically is different? Because they're different devices?

viral panther
#

IoT is shit because of a lack of standards and security

halcyon mantle
#

@plucky ridge Because nobody buys a car expecting it to last a lifetime

#

You know it's gonna break at some point

#

But you wouldn't expect the same as an online service

plucky ridge
#

Wouldn't I?

sand goblet
#

I appreciate having an offline IoT network

plucky ridge
#

An offline one yeah, I could get behind that

sand goblet
#

home assistant is the only thing that can be accessed outside of my network

plucky ridge
#

Sure but you have to pray that has the proper security behind it

halcyon mantle
#

Offline networks are cool

sand goblet
#

well I mean I don't have to pray

#

it's written in python and I can read the source

red willow
#

people are so eager with IoT products, they are willing to deal with the downside, imo

sand goblet
#

but yeah, most people do

red willow
#

we have a lot of optimists when it comes to consumerism

plucky ridge
#

Especially in the US

red willow
#

..my wife being on of them

rough sapphire
#

Why can't they just have a STFU context option at the bottom... It seems like the most obvious context option that there could be.

red willow
#

just blinded by utility value of the product

halcyon mantle
#

What's STFU

plucky ridge
#

"Shut the fuck up"

rough sapphire
#

crude acronym for ignore.

halcyon mantle
#

Oh yeah

honest star
#

Yeah, I'm in the process of having the IoT devices I do use be offline. If I can't have it offline, it's on a separate network from non-IoT things.

red willow
#

I could see STFU being a function in the future

halcyon mantle
#

It probably hides in focus mode?

sand goblet
#

I do plan to do separate-network stuff too yeah

#

but need to upgrade my home network for that

plucky ridge
#

See, and that I can get behind, Kat. It's just when you have your toothbrush connected to the internet, like what's the damn point?

red willow
#

wow you guys are pretty proactive

plucky ridge
#

Not everything needs this huge connectivity

halcyon mantle
#

Not everything even needs technology

red willow
#

toothbrushes have bluetooth now?

viral panther
#

Pretty sure mine does

plucky ridge
#

Just a taking it too far example

rough sapphire
#

I hate IoT devices and the worst part is living with people who dont understand my preference that they not use them.

halcyon mantle
#

electric toothbrush, why

red willow
#

does it measure RPMs or something?

rough sapphire
#

So that basically is something I should look into as well

plucky ridge
#

Or frequency of use or plays music through your teeth

viral panther
#

It can be used to activate different brush patterns, IIRC

plucky ridge
#

Who knows

red willow
#

even water bottles have IoT

#

tracks how much you drink

#

and reminds you when to drink

honest star
#

Most of this is driven by the person I live with being very security and safety conscious. And me because offline usually means open source, which means I can customize a lot.

halcyon mantle
#

@rough sapphire how so

#

so you know how long you've brushed your teeth for? XD

plucky ridge
#

More effective at cleaning your teeth, typically

red willow
#

it is almost as if Human's want the best possible guidance/metrics

#

so nothing is off limits for IoT products

halcyon mantle
#

That's something you learn as a young child, or should do

red willow
#

IoT shoes...

#

...tracks mileage

#

...suggests when shoes are worn out, etc

halcyon mantle
#

Ever heard of ... GPS

red willow
#

GPS is worth the tradeoff when it comes to phones, imo

sand goblet
#

there are things that play music through your face

#

through your bones specifically

plucky ridge
#

There are some toothbrushes that do that. I remember seeing them maybe a decade ago

red willow
#

what it must have been like to take a road trip with a plain old map

halcyon mantle
#

@sand goblet what's it called

sand goblet
#

bone conduction

honest star
#

I love my bone conduction headphones!

halcyon mantle
#

ew

sand goblet
#

it's a neat tech

honest star
#

They're great for bike riding

red willow
#

hey hands off my patent idea

halcyon mantle
#

that sounds damaging

sand goblet
#

it's not

plucky ridge
#

It's literally how we hear our own voices

#

We're more hearing the vibrations through our bones than the sound from the air

#

It's partly why we sound different in a recording than we do to ourselves normally

halcyon mantle
#

forgets to turn off headphones

all bones break

plucky ridge
#

If you say so, champ (that was to pwn)

halcyon mantle
#

all you need is

red willow
#

"Do I really sound that nasily?!"

halcyon mantle
#

10 dimensional music

#

yeah it like pans around you

plucky ridge
#

Wouldn't that just be multi-positional rather than dimensional?

halcyon mantle
#

no idea

#

all i know is that it's pretty cool

plucky ridge
#

I mean they both sound dumb

halcyon mantle
#

big numbers uwu

plucky ridge
#

Just sounds like buzzwords with little to know useful meaning

#

But I'm also just a grumpy old man, soooo

red willow
#

wow I am impressed with the bone conduction

#

need that for christmas

plucky ridge
#

Oh yeah, bone conduction tech is amazing

halcyon mantle
#

stop saying bone conduction ahhhh

honest star
#

It's nice, but not quite magic

halcyon mantle
#

i hate the word

plucky ridge
#

Which

#

Bone or conduction

halcyon mantle
#

bone and conduction in conjunction with each other

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire multi-positional

honest star
#

If there's other loud sounds it's pretty easy to over-power. If you have the music too loud the vibrations can start to bother you

viral panther
#

Bone induction

plucky ridge
#

Bone deduction

halcyon mantle
#

that's worseeeee

#

don't take my bones

viral panther
#

Bone destruction

halcyon mantle
#

bone reconstruction

red willow
#

hey Lukas

#

sorry, I can't include any of the accents around your name

halcyon mantle
#

ÔŔ

red willow
#

how did you do that?

halcyon mantle
#

copied and pasted lol

red willow
#

oh pshhh....

sand goblet
#

the bone conduction set I had were by trekz I think

#

they were great until I accidentally snapped them in half

sand goblet
#

but I actually prefer earphones with hear-through tbh

#

because I can decide if I want to isolate or not

red willow
#

they sound fragile

halcyon mantle
#

i prefer wireless earphones when i'm in public

#

when i'm home i use headphones

sand goblet
#

that's what I use

halcyon mantle
#

since they look more geeky

sand goblet
#

nice pair of jabras for out and about

halcyon mantle
#

nice

red willow
#

I have this fear while jogging that a cyclist will be shouting at me to move and I won't hear them because of my music

sand goblet
#

at home I use some old hyperx headphones

plucky ridge
#

Speaking of bones and hearing things, I've been having this weird... I guess crackly noise when I swallow coming from my left ear. And when I try to pinch my nose and equalize the pressure, the left ear just doesn't feel quite right

#

No idea why

#

Literally feels like I can feel the bones in my ear

sand goblet
#

Maybe you need to get your ears syringed

plucky ridge
#

I mean it doesn't sound muffled

#

I can hear from it just fine

halcyon mantle
#

as a professional, i would advise that you go to the doctors asap @plucky ridge

red willow
#

oh this took a solemn turn

#

I'm uncomfortable now

halcyon mantle
#

i don't like talking about body parts

#

especially the ones inside you

#

ugh

sand goblet
#

what kind of professional

viral panther
#

A professional professional

halcyon mantle
#

a professional doctor advisor

red willow
#

professional liar....

halcyon mantle
#

when somethings wrong all i say is go to the doctors

viral panther
#

What if you're dealing with legal problems?

#

Or are lawyers just law doctors?

halcyon mantle
#

go to your lawyer

red willow
#

sounds like a great app idea

plucky ridge
#

I mean it doesn't hurt, it's not messing with my balance, and it comes and goes

#

So I'm not overly worried about it

halcyon mantle
#

are you from the UK @plucky ridge

sand goblet
#

rub some bacon on it

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire Depends on how credible the one who said it is

#

No, I'm in the US

halcyon mantle
#

you know if you get the NHS app you can talk to a doctor over chat for free

#

oh

plucky ridge
#

I have insurance, but eh

red willow
#

i thought you were british

plucky ridge
#

Not all of us

halcyon mantle
#

i'm sure theres an app for that too

plucky ridge
#

Yeah we have virtual doc visits

halcyon mantle
#

or website

#

that's cool

plucky ridge
#

I could probably shoot my doc a message about it

#

Might do that later

#

Not super high on my list

halcyon mantle
#

but anonymous ones might be better

plucky ridge
#

Why?

halcyon mantle
#

or more comfortable

red willow
#

does it ever bother the Europeans on here (and Canadians), how many Americans are in this chat?

plucky ridge
#

I've gone to the same doctor for like.... 25+ years

halcyon mantle
#

there are some things i'd never go to the doctors for

plucky ridge
#

@red willow Is my presence bothersome?

halcyon mantle
#

no matter how serious

red willow
#

nope, I'm American

viral panther
#

Actually it bothers me how many Europeans and Canadians there are here. :Kappa:

plucky ridge
#

Gotcha

#

@halcyon mantle Wait, why?

halcyon mantle
#

i mean like, getting naked

#

no chance

plucky ridge
#

That's the dumbest shit I've heard in a while

halcyon mantle
#

noo

sand goblet
#

I've had to do that

plucky ridge
#

You do realize that's their job, right? To take care of you? And you'd be far from the first person they've seen like that

halcyon mantle
#

it's not about them it's about me

sand goblet
#

had my balls inspected by an old lady and an energetic indian dude

#

it's their job so, like, whatever

#

also I was in pain

plucky ridge
#

Yep

red willow
#

show the damn gif, it was perfec ttiming

#

damnit!

halcyon mantle
#

a woman... damn

viral panther
#

It's better to be embarrassed than to miss a health problem...

sand goblet
#

yup

halcyon mantle
#

i'd be more comfortable with someone the same sex

sand goblet
#

you'll miss them when they're gone

halcyon mantle
#

so long as they aren't interested in the same sex

plucky ridge
#

@sand goblet Your testicles?

sand goblet
#

yup

viral panther
#

Besides, the doctors and nurses really won't care

plucky ridge
#

Nuts to that

red willow
#

do you know how many naked folks they see per day?

sand goblet
#

I mean true, they make you go bald and give you acne, but

halcyon mantle
#

you can't convince me @viral panther

plucky ridge
#

Your funeral

red willow
#

he's a non-nudist

plucky ridge
#

I think the term is never-nude

red willow
#

sorry, never-nude

plucky ridge
#

Absolutely. Which is why I stopped trying just then

#

I said my piece, I is done

halcyon mantle
#

unless at home

#

uwu

undone berry
#

Nothing wrong with being a never nude. There's literally dozens of them

red willow
#

very mature @rough sapphire

#

we need more humans like you

plucky ridge
#

It's intentional

#

You see how I normally write, I tend to say silly things like "I is done" more for emphasis

red willow
#

maybe

sand goblet
#

I do that

plucky ridge
#

Same when I do somethin' like that

#

Didn't save me a keystroke, but you hear it in your head slightly differently

red willow
#

so never nudes actually exist?

plucky ridge
#

Yes

#

Some people are just incredibly embarassed

red willow
#

they shower with underwear on?

plucky ridge
#

Which is fair, people can feel how they want to

#

I'm sure someone does

red willow
#

that seems like a hassle

halcyon mantle
#

Nooo you're misunderstanding

undone berry
#

I think it's more anxiety than just embarrassment

red willow
#

seems like anxiety to me

undone berry
#

They don't even do it in private

plucky ridge
#

Both possibly?

red willow
#

too much body shaming

honest star
#

(I have a very friendly cat who is a bit clumsy and steps on my keyboard a lot)

halcyon mantle
#

Difference between getting all naked infront of the doc and stepping into the shower

plucky ridge
#

@honest star So, a cat

undone berry
#

My cat isn't friendly

#

At least not most of the time

honest star
#

This one is... particularly clumsy. He's all legs.

red willow
#

wait until you get married @halcyon mantle ....

plucky ridge
#

@halcyon mantle There shouldn't be a difference. They're both regular things that help keep you healthy

#

I mean so long as the doctor is ASKING you to undress and you're not just like, doing it

#

Probably weird to go in with an earache and then you strip down to your socks

halcyon mantle
#

loll

plucky ridge
#

And it's rare that you'll be 100% nude. Usually it's lowering the trousers and then back up again

halcyon mantle
#

What if he touches it

Well, that's part of the examination

halcyon mantle

It gets big 😳

plucky ridge
#

They won't care

red willow
#

.....that would be weird

plucky ridge
#

It's a human reaction, they're doctors

#

If you think THAT would weird them out, well

red willow
#

too much anxiety for that to happen though

plucky ridge
#

@red willow Some folks get anxious ones

#

Or ah -cough- so I've heard

red willow
#

at worst, you have a great story in the future that should get some laughs

halcyon mantle
#

And get a replacement doctor

plucky ridge
#

But long story short, doctors won't care, you'd hardly be the first person that would have had that happen to them

halcyon mantle
#

Ok

plucky ridge
#

Fear of talking to your doctor about stuff is a good way to make a minor problem into a larger one

#

They're there for that exact purpose, to help take care of stuff when it's easy to treat or take care of

#

If it needs to be examined, so be it

halcyon mantle
#

I should date a nurse

plucky ridge
#

I did

#

They're crazy

halcyon mantle
#

Why

#

@rough sapphire yes

plucky ridge
#

Why are they crazy? I mean it takes a special mentality of person to want to work in the medical field, work the long, stressful hours, and go through that amount of schooling

#

Also I'm a crazy magnet, so that doesn't help

halcyon mantle
#

Lol

plucky ridge

Eh, people are people

sand goblet

yup, everyone's different

plucky ridge

Could just as easily say that people who judge others just because they like pumpkin spice latte and wear Ugg boots are also the worst

halcyon mantle
#

pumpkin spice latte is nice though

plucky ridge
#

Exactly

halcyon mantle
#

yummy

#

i never said they are worthless

sand goblet
#

it's OK to have your own personal taste

they're not the worst though

#

manipulators are the worst

plucky ridge
#

Been one and been with those

halcyon mantle
#

what do you mean by that

#

@sand goblet

#

manipulators how

sand goblet
#

like manipulative people

#

are you asking me for the definition?

halcyon mantle
#

how do you be manipulative

plucky ridge
#

People who intentionally try to make someone else do something they either normally wouldn't want to do or something

sand goblet
#

it's about an imbalance of power

#

one person exploiting the other for their agenda

halcyon mantle
#

did you see pewdiepies new video?

plucky ridge
#

Yep to what gdude said

halcyon mantle
#

it was a reaction to this couple and the guy was trying to persuade this big girl to lose weight

plucky ridge
#

I take it not in a constructive or supportive way

halcyon mantle
#

i believe it was

#

you'd have to watch it but she was getting angry

#

and he was just trying to help her

sand goblet
#

I mean even if he was being constructive, I can think of reasons she might be unhappy with it

plucky ridge
#

That also happens. You can't help those who don't want it

#

Sure sure

#

The fact that there's a video of it, for one

#

Not sure if I'd want a video of my intervention

sand goblet
#

yeah, me neither

halcyon mantle
sand goblet

I mean

haha

halcyon mantle

haha yeah

sand goblet

I'm in a call and working on an MC mod so I'm not gonna watch either way, but

I do already find pewdiepie annoying

halcyon mantle

ok

#

it doesn't bother me

#

i got bored of minecraft a long time ago

#

oh.. i have no idea because i play on console

#

i guess i have no creativity lol

sand goblet
#

well it depends on the mods

#

there are a lot of magic/exploration packs too

#

it's not all tech

halcyon mantle
#

they should allow mods on console

#

i always hate this

#

PC and console users being seperated, it's annoying

sand goblet

they won't

either i build something myself and it looks bad, or i follow some youtube tutorial and it still ends up looking bad

viral panther

Build things programmatically

halcyon mantle

i guess it's preference, singleplayer can be more peaceful

#

and not have to monitor everyone in your game lol

#

stark prawn
#

halcyon mantle
#

@rough sapphire the power of PC :((

#

@stark prawn i don't have friends i just look in groups... yea i'm sad

#

viral panther
#

No. Just write what you want in code. Don't do things by hand

#

Want a big building? Build it using code. You're a programmer!

halcyon mantle
#

I'm also a console player :P

viral panther
#

Yeah, sure

#

However you want to go about it

halcyon mantle
#

i am not even sure how you would do that

#

what would you do when you spend 3 irl days building a house, only to realise you built it facing the wrong way?

viral panther
#

For fun you can use computer vision to help

sand goblet
#

worldedit it

halcyon mantle
#

because i've done that once and holy shit

#

worldedit, damn

viral panther
#

Pwn: Fix your code. You can set up a DSL for building quick walls or something

halcyon mantle
#

on console? @viral panther

sand goblet
#

worldedit: let's just rotate the house

halcyon mantle
#

yeah i wish i had that

viral panther
#

No, I thought you were asking about how to fix a code problem

halcyon mantle

oh

ok

Lol, not even looking for Haskell stuff and it still pops up

halcyon mantle

it tracked you

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire Ah, yeah, that's easy to do. Just set your status to Do Not Disturb

viral panther
#

But yeah, why do things by hand? That's for non-programmers and people without tools

rough sapphire

But yeah, e-mail is a lot harder. Sent a message to Discord to see how I can re-enable that. We'll see. ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

viral panther

I would never do any serious amount of work by hand, but you do you

rough sapphire
#

Is swap memory called swap memory in windows too?

stark prawn
#

page file

rough sapphire
#

I wonder why it's not just called virtual memory

#

are there any differences between the implementations for each system is it just semantics?

halcyon mantle
#

lazy

sand goblet
#

it's a file

#

on linux you usually use a swap partition

stark prawn
#

Pagefile and swapfile are similar.

sand goblet
#

yeah

stark prawn
#

But you often use a partition indeed.

#

Though for my own systems I always use files.

leaden shuttle
#

I prefer swapfile since you can resize it with ease

#

a parition is more fixed, well you could techincally resize your partition but itsn't not something you should do all the time KEKW

lofty dirge
#

Windows/Linux work similar with Memory except Windows does push stuff to pagefile even when it's not strictly required but will attempt to cache with memory

leaden shuttle
#

I remember increasing my pagefilesize on Windows (7? I think), the default size was pretty low afair.

#

I recall having 8gb ram and increasing pagefile to 12gb

#

atleast from win10 it seems like the mimum amount is 1.5x your ram size

rancid forge
#

ok @rough sapphire so im finally getting to the computer today and i just realized: i need a line buffer
i can't just color the top separately from the bottom because currently im just reading the raw bits, converting them in sets of three into numbers from 0 to 16777215, then turning them into 8-bit values
this means these are my goals:

  1. flip the result upside-down so it looks proper
  2. implement the thing xx came up with
  3. publish the source
  4. uhh...
modern heron
#

okay fellas and galls. I dont know how Im gonna do this but I have 46 folders numbered 1-46. In each folder is up to 5 folders each with contents inside of it. How could I quickly just move all the folders inside the numbered folders, random folder into the base. Heres what I mean:

1
2
3
4
5 - {
   - hello
   - hi
   - test - {
      - folder1
      - folder2 - {
         - other stuff in here, you get it
      }
   }
}
... continues

How could I loop through and get the contents of every folder in 1/ to move into 1/

#

if any of that makes sense

#

Idk how to approach it

viral panther
#

Recursion

#

Pretend you have two folders, base and sub

modern heron
#

yeah

viral panther
#

Move everything from sub to base

#

Then just repeat until you're done

#

oh shit yeah

damn

plucky ridge
#

Morning, folks

lime gazelle
#

I was doing some research on OSSU and like, I've found a couple of reddit posts saying that the course it's too long and resources aren't that good.
Is it like, true? Or is it just bogus?

#

Because like, 2/3 hours a day for 2 years to get a full CS education seems too little compared to what you actually study in uni?

lofty dirge
#

It’s probably strictly computer science compared to full broad education you get at UNI

lime gazelle
#

It's supposed to mimic a CS course from university

#

So like, whatever it's in the OSSU curriculum should be in a CS curriculum as far as I understand it

lofty dirge
#

Sure but what about math science literature and other courses you have to take at uni to graduate?

lime gazelle
#

There are math courses

#

Also I don't think you have science and literature in uni

lofty dirge
#

Depends where you live. What country you in?

lime gazelle

Italy

lofty dirge
#

In United States university is 4 years broad education

viral panther

We had to take at least one science elective and two mandatory physics classes for my CS degree

lofty dirge

is designed according to the degree requirements of undergraduate computer science majors, minus general education (non-CS) requirements, as it is assumed most of the people following this curriculum are already educated outside the field of CS.

We had to take at least one science elective and two mandatory physics classes for my CS degree
@viral panther Yep same here, but it makes sense

Sadly no physics in the OSSU curriculum

my kitchen has a leak directly onto what I'm assuming is a live wire. A wire which has been mentioned to the incompetent as fuck landlord several times. This causes the electrics in my kitchen to trip - now I have no food to eat and also have to deal with my shitty useless piece of shit landlord

I do - and I am soon. Still just very fucking annoying in the short term

This is the UK - the regulations around landlording are incredibly shoddy and ill enforced. Need a license for a TV - but not to be a landlord

Last night the electric was tripping in the kitchen instantly. Now the electric is apparently fine. The only issue is I just shouted at the estate agents/landlord on the phone saying I had no electric - so I look like a right mug

it definitely is - but they think we're just complete fucking morons

gentle moss

being a landlord isn't even a fricking job

that's not employment income it's investment income

rough sapphire

at least with my own apartment i'm entirely responsible for fixing any fuckery that might be going on and have nobody else to blame for incompetence than myself

gentle moss
#

they're directly scraping a tenant's labour value by giving them somewhere to live

#

that is usually shitty.

undone berry
#

I don't even have any contact info for my landlord, they go through a letting agent. But the letting agent still needs permission from them for anything, so it's literally just the landlord being a lazy coward doing the bare minimum to be able to legally rent

gentle moss

same here

This is what I'm having to work with

#

And all of those are stuffed deep into node modules

#

And the files those reference are in even deeper ones

brittle timber
#

oh n o

plucky ridge
#

Well I'm probably wrong now that I look at it

#

I thought it was a lack of certificate, but I'm running this thing as http rather than https, so it's not likely to be that

brittle timber
#

perhaps it may be efficient to run a dict of dicts?

#

unsure

plucky ridge
#

No no, this is an NPM package file

#

It shows what commands I can do linked to this project

brittle timber
#

ooooh

plucky ridge
#

So to quickly sum up what I'm working on, I'm making an Excel Add-in. It's a rewrite of one that was made back in 2001 by an employee here (who is no longer here). I've gotten it working, but deployment is the issue now

#

So I'm trying to figure out how to make a localhost on a machine and get it to properly serve the content to Excel

#

Uh

#

Is stackoverflow down for anyone else?

#

I'm getting a "Service is unavailable" message

brittle timber
#

i heard it's down, ye

plucky ridge
#

Well that doesn't bode well for my day

brittle timber
#

too many people with coding issues

#

rip

plucky ridge
#

Ahhhh, it is a web application

#

Okay

#

That clears up some things

#

So it's not a static page delivery that I need

honest star
#

Stackoverflow's been up for me all morning (related: fuck stylesheets)

plucky ridge
#

I second that

#

Although sass does make it slightly tolerable

#

Honestly I think I might dump my eggs into the React basket when I'm done with this

#

It's made making this add-in look good pretty easy

honest star
#

I'm trying to make this program not look like straight out of the 80s to avoid making a phone call. Applying stylesheets to Qt is... a new world of hurt for someone who throws bootstrap at every styling issue I come across. (Also because we're apparently having infinity sponsors at this field test and so it actually matters if it looks presentable)

undone berry
#

if you're just not trying to do anything too extraordinary, using a framework makes it pretty easy

#

oh

#

non css stylesheets

#

oh

#

that is awful

honest star
#

I am NOT a fan so far. Especially because of hot Qt does classes. If I apply a style to a QFrame it affects all the classes it inherits from which... is not always clear.

plucky ridge
#

Kivy does it pretty well

honest star
#

Who knew a QTableView inherits from a QFrame. Not me shrug

plucky ridge
#

But yeah, I didn't like Qt's syntax stuff

#

(the stuff not in Python, I mean)

undone berry
#

Kivy doesn't really have stylesheets

honest star
#

Otherwise, I LOVE Qt. It's great and the pyqtgraphing library is 90% of everything I want.

undone berry
#

their markup covers both style and layout entirely

plucky ridge
#

Sure sure, that's more what I meant

undone berry
#

the web is where it's at

#

who needs qt when you have bokeh or charts.js or whatever

#

that's the life

honest star
#

So question. With web displaying python applications with bokeh and the like, do you need a webserver to host it? Can you host it locally on an offline network?

plucky ridge
#

I think Python has a built in server

#

Not sure if that's what it uses, though

#

So I'm sure it's possible to do it, but I don't know what method they use

undone berry
#

Python+Electron is a pretty standard setup

#

not sure on exactly how it works

#

but you can run a local server that way

plucky ridge
#

HO, I just scared myself

#

Cut when I should have copied

solid pollen
#

Fun fact: the integrated python server is here because that's what is used to serve the docs, and you need it to be able to run a local copy

plucky ridge
#

I legit didn't know that, neat

brittle timber
#

that does sound neat

plucky ridge
#

Oh

#

OH

#

That may have given me an idea

undone berry
#

I have to do a 5 hour introduction to outlook

#

5 damn hours

#

5 hours

#

that's insane

plucky ridge
#

As in take a 5 hour intro on it or give one

undone berry
#

sit through 5 hours of outlook videos

#

and they're all like 3 minutes

rancid forge
#

now that just sounds like torture

plucky ridge
#

You getting paid for it at least?

undone berry
#

well - yes. But I'd be getting paid for much more interesting things if it wasn't for that

plucky ridge
#

Sure sure

#

I'm mainly just saying at least you're being compensated

undone berry
#

yeah, I'm essentially getting paid to listen the bare minimum and chat shit on here

#

but it's distracting enough that I can't do meaningful work

plucky ridge
#

Yep, sounds like training

solid pollen
#

5 hours?! Are you sure it isn't actually "Introduction to outlook, programming, networking, stmp, and creating outlook from scratch"?

undone berry
#

one of the first videos is How to get help and presumably the answer is press f1

#

but it's 3 minutes long

#

well - press f1 and also there's a search box

bleak rain
#

lmao@solid pollen

#

I hope you are speeding em up @undone berry

undone berry
#

can't - it's on some shitty learning platform

bleak rain
#

ouch

#

write a script to yoink the videos and speed them up yourself hyperlemon

solid pollen
#

But... What is exactly the point haha

bleak rain
#

^^^^ wondering the same

solid pollen
#

You don't know how to use an email client

undone berry
#

i dunno - just gotta do a abunch of training to keep the training people happy

solid pollen
#

Lol

bleak rain
#

This is your brain on capitalistic western society

#

training for training's sake

#

||at least you have a job||

undone berry
#

that's true - I'm very happy about that

sand goblet
#

I am concern

lost frigate
#

How would we respond?

#

*respawn

meager ledge
#

infinite time means no deadline

#

idk, but we have infinite time

lost frigate
#

If everything on earth died there is no way

meager ledge
#

maybe were living in a simulation and the creators let us respawn

#

infinite is not true and false

lost frigate
#

True

#

But then who’s the creator?

meager ledge
#

hard to say

#

we cannot say were living in a simulation until weve managed to make one

#

elon musk says theres a 90% chance were living in a simulation

lost frigate
#

If u think about

#

We have had simulations many many times before

#

Dreams

#

We spend about 20 years total dreaming

#

Some people consider it an alternate reality

meager ledge
#

dreams arent a simulation because we are experiencing them, other people dont live in them

lost frigate
#

U could be wrong

meager ledge
#

a simulation would kinda be like the sims except everybody would be self conscious and could make decisions, also be self aware
