#

There was actually an overlooked bug in 2 that allowed you to fly the boat infinitely without consuming psynergy

#

I should finish another playthrough of 2 given I was done with 1 a few months back

rough sapphire
#

Huh, neat.

#

I know they released a third one, but never played it.

#

Think it was on the DS if I remember

topaz aurora
#

The third one is ehhh

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, that's what I expected

topaz aurora
#

Cool summon animations though

rough sapphire
#

Advance Wars on the DS was great too

topaz aurora
#

Only played Days of Ruin and honestly the tonal shift from the GBA games threw me off guard

#

Speaking of cool animations and turn-based strategy, Fire Emblem 7 and Fire Emblem 8 is still my favorite

Hi guys, anyone here can help me with an assembly question?

Asking good questions will yield a much higher chance of a quick response:

• Don't ask to ask your question, just go ahead and tell us your problem.
• Don't ask if anyone is knowledgeable in some area, filtering serves no purpose.
• Try to solve the problem on your own first, we're not going to write code for you.
• Show us the code you've tried and any errors or unexpected results it's giving.
• Be patient while we're helping you.

You can find a much more detailed explanation on our website.

Hi guys, anyone here can help me with an assembly question?
@earnest mortar it is x86?

earnest mortar
#

Yes!

#

So you have to tell the values of eax and ebx after each intineration of the "loop"

#

I had it on a test few hours ago and skiped it bcs assembly is really not my thing. So my answers were starting with the initial values '(3 and 2) but then I answered randomly

#

I'm curious about the real result

cosmic quiver
#

well it seems eax is immediately set to 0

#

from label1: downwards what happens is roughly this

if (ebx == 0) goto label3;

eax += ebx;
ebx--;```
#

so when label2 is first encountered eax would be 2 and ebx would be 1
next eax would be 3 and ebx would be 0
then it would terminate

earnest mortar
#

Thanks a lot @cosmic quiver

solid pollen
#

Well, the questions says that it can do less than 5 iterations

cosmic quiver
#

I was mostly confused about why it's given an initial value if it's set to 0 anyway

#

Doom II: Hell on Earth is a first-person shooter game by id Software. It was originally released for MS-DOS computers in 1994 and Macintosh computers in 1995. Unlike the original Doom, which was initially only available through shareware and mail order, Doom II was sold in stores.

high verge
#

how have you never heard of the doom series

topaz aurora
#

You need to game harder Tango

sand goblet
#

The doom games are great, especially doom eternal

wooden silo
#

Is Doom Eternal better than Doom 2016?

#

Because I really enjoyed the latter.

sand goblet
#

It's very different, but in a good way

#

There's a much, much larger focus on movement and you really have to care about ammo

#

It's a lot more challenging because of that but it's so much more fun

topaz aurora
#

On the perspective of a spectator, Eternal definitely has a bit more flare

sand goblet
#

You can go through the entirety of doom 2016 and never use the chainsaw

#

in Eternal, it's an absolute essential

#

To integrate it into the flow, the last bar of chainsaw fuel will regenerate on its own over time when you run out, and every fight is littered with fodder demons that - while still dangerous - are intended to be used as chainsaw ammo farms

#

during long fights they actually respawn every so often

#

but yeah, you get two dashes, you get a double jump, you can mantle up things, there are poles to swing on

#

stop moving and you're dead

#

it's very good

wooden silo
#

Interesting.

#

Sort of reminiscent of the original in the sense of stop moving and you die.

sand goblet
#

Yeah, in a sense

#

There's also a hub world now where you can unlock things and replay missions, or play harder versions of missions - "master levels"

wooden silo
#

The first one required movement as well, but it wasn't too unforgiving.

sand goblet
#

and you can find cheat codes hidden around, which is neat

#

Yeah, that's true, this one really requires you to keep moving

#

on the other hand, you can find extra lives, which basically refill your health and armour when you die

#

although I had none when I reached the final boss of the game so that was pretty tense

wooden silo
#

Well, I'll keep it in my game backlog then.

sand goblet
#

it's definitely an example of id pushing the genre ahead again I think

rough sapphire
#

Woah!

stuck meteor
#

why is the output of 100 and 50 50?

rough sapphire
#

because 50 evaluates to 50

#

100 or 50 would be 100

#

it's to do with the truthiness of those values

#

both are truthy, which means they are evaluated like that

#

try 0 and 1 and 0 or 1 instead

round rose
#

or returns the first operand if it evaluates to True, otherwise the second

#

and returns the first operand if it evaluates to False, otherwise the second

rough sapphire
#

that's a much better explanation than mine

#

but yeah, this is called short circuit evaluation

round rose
#

If the first operand is True in an or, we don't even need to check the second, we know the result will be True

#

Otherwise the result is equal to what the second operand evaluates to, so python returns it

#

Same goes for and, but the other way round - if the first operand is False, there's no need to check the second, the result is already known to be False

So doing the database split/transfer thing, right? I had someone point out to me that one of their clients was missing from the new database, and for some reason the files from that client are now merged with another client. Turns out that those client entries were done by hand (fairly common in the Document Management System when we're either making a spot for a new client or a client that typically isn't a tax client.)

Normally, when we do one by hand, we leave the Tax ID field blank. DMS knows how to handle that, it'll fall back to client name comparison or Client ID. However, for some reason, these had "none" written in them

#

So

#

That's fun

technically, it's just the bread keeping the pizza together

that's not pizza. that's macaroni + cheese.

This is one of the most useful properties of leftover mac and cheese

haha

tight meadow
#

you aren't really missing out

#

it doesn't taste good

#

in my opinion at least

sand goblet
#

@shell raptor Have you looked into webpack though?

shell raptor
#

Nope

sand goblet
#

It's basically a plugin-based pipeline for all your web assets

#

it'll minify and concatenate your CSS/JS, compile your TS/CS and SASS/LESS, and it bundles everything up into a single place

#

it also does stuff like

#

for example, you can import image files in your JS

#

when it bundles things, the imports will be replaced with the path to the asset from the root

#

it's pretty killer for SPAs

shell raptor
#

I'll look into it, thanks

#

I'm already using minified libraries, and with caching it's not a big issue. I'm not planning to use any more dependencies (and hopefully I will find a replacement for codemirror)

sand goblet
#

Yeah, this is mostly like, the uhh

#

the fine tuning optimisation stuff

#

minimizing the number of requests and such

shell raptor
#

I'm already scoring 90+ on lighthouse 😎 which is better than most existing websites, probably

sand goblet
#

It's pretty good, yeah

#

The main concern really depends on the type of audience you have tbh

shell raptor
#

I'm not saying I'm better than them, haha. They have much more stuff going on

sand goblet
#

like if for example you're dealing with, I dunno, indian or african users

#

it's super important to minimize the number of requests users need to make

shell raptor
#

makes sense

sand goblet
#

because the time to establish a connection is so bad on 2G and 3G

shell raptor
#

I tried browsing my site on 55kbit/s settings

sand goblet
#

It's not necessarily down to raw speed unfortunately

shell raptor
#

it is somewhat bearable

sand goblet
#

I also find it interesting how much CDNs have taken off

#

they can cause all kinds of problems with sites, especially in countries like china

shell raptor
#

what kind of problems?

#

does China block some CDNs?

sand goblet
#

they do, but they're also not consistent about their blocking decisions

#

like you probably know that cloudflare runs a CDN

#

one day china just decided to block it

#

they've unblocked it since

shell raptor
#

global-level trolling

#

I'm wondering whether I should switch some libraries to a CDN.

sand goblet
#

I don't think CDNs are an inherantly bad idea

shell raptor
#

It might make loading time faster, since I'm using a pretty crappy hosting.

sand goblet
#

but you probably want to use one on your own domain

shell raptor
#

is that a thing?

sand goblet
#

yup

#

digitalocean has a pretty cheap one

#

you need to publish stuff to it yourself, of course, but it's a CDN

#

pretty much any site with a large amount of user generated media needs one for that

shell raptor
sand goblet
#

spaces, yep

#

I've used it, it certainly works, although on my specific connection it's just a hair slower than you'd expect

#

but most people seem to have no issues with that

shell raptor
#

I might try it if the website will need to support more than 100 users

sand goblet
#

Yup, that's fair

#

You'll also need it if you're scaling anyway

#

since, well, where do you store uploaded files if your site is spread over multiple machines?

shell raptor
#

Google Drive

sand goblet
#

haha

shell raptor
#

I'm still using sqlite there, though. Will change that as soon as possible™

#

I'll use a CDN and also SQLite

sand goblet
#

are you putting the sqlite on the cdn? haha

DigitalOcean Spaces is 86% more expensive than my existing hosting

sand goblet
#

the heck are you hosting on, a raspberry pi?

#

:>

shell raptor
#

don't attack my hosting service!!

#

I have 7GB of storage

sand goblet
#

haha, fair

#

I pay around $50/mo for my server, but then again it's got 43 containers on it

#

so that's like $1.15/mo per service

shell raptor
#

Maybe I could try Heroku, actually

#

But it's more expensive than my existing hosting, right?

sand goblet
#

yup

shell raptor
#

I checked just now, the average ping time to the hosting is 350ms from Sydney, 270 from Tokyo, 200ms from the US (several locations), 40ms from Amsterdam and 16ms from St.Petersburg. But again, it's only going to be used from inside Russia

#

Now that I think about it, the ping time could still reach 100+ ms if you move far enough to the east.

#

shit

#

I'll just blacklist all IPs from Vladivostok

sand goblet
#

haha
