gentle moss
#

which is a shame because now would be the perfect time to make my little switch management project

#

need at least 3 switches to muck with that though

thorn snow
#

what do you want to do?

#

also, what kind of switches?

#

when we say switch at work, it really is a 10.000€ juniper l3 router 😄

gentle moss
#

nah, these are just some TP-Link jetstream jobs

#

the idea is to create a nice easy to use website to allow my co-workers to setup VLANs etc

#

so they can specify an end point and have it propagate down

#

pet project more than anything

#

tbh i'm quite pleased with the performance of the TP-Link switches

#

pretty damn robust considering the price point

#

if you're fine with china stealing all your secrets

thorn snow
#

I have one at home myself

#

simple l2 switch without mgmt

#

was like 20€

gentle moss
#

the managed switches are damn fine

#

no frills

#

does the job

thorn snow
#

yeah, but I don't see the point of managed for home use

#

I just didn't want my network to go completely down when my router decides to update

#

but I guess for office they are nice

gentle moss
#

i got one for home use with the lofty goal of putting all the IoT shit on it

#

then i was like "nah fuck it"

#

Bring on the mini-big mac

forest swan
#

it's almost like you're dividing by zero 🤔

gentle moss
#

oh shit

#

@rough sapphire @undone berry

#

brooker is doing a covid special

#

a wipe. :D

thorn snow
undone berry
#

Oh thats actually pretty damn fantastic

#

absolute perfect thing for him to wipe. Everything surrounding it has been shit. Most governmental/organisational response, media response, idiots responses. Absolute perfect for the tone of the show and absolute shit for the world

gentle moss
#

yeah.

#

i'm 200% onboard for it

#

need some of that grim levity right about now

sand goblet
#

Oh shit

#

I'm gonna need to watch that one

pearl horizon
#

Reading back to earlier talk about parallel ports.. I think the last I used one was mid 90's but I remember seeing them in computers at least the next 5-10 years. Just depended on how old it was. But by that time, hardly ever used

#

Think the last peripherals using parallel ports would be printers, or possibly joysticks. For me I only used printers with parallel ports. I was lucky enough to have a USB 1.0 joystick back in the day lol

thorn snow
#

IDE was parallel

gentle moss
#

printers. joysticks used the "game port"

#

i remember having to buy a sound card just to get a game port

thorn snow
#

SCSI

#

😄

pearl horizon
#

I never used an external drive. At least back then. First external I had was closer to 2010, USB. Such a piece of shit I refuse to buy another external drive

gentle moss
#

Sound Blaster AWE64

#

:D:D

pearl horizon
#

I remember my first motherboard without a floppy connector. Felt genuinely concerned I wouldnt be able to use my Linux live floppies anymore

#

Haha nice. I had something similar to that. Maybe even the same one

gentle moss
#

no floppy had me concerned about BIOS flashing

thorn snow
#

I wanted to get into floppy music, but it was impossible to find floppies for a nice price

#

pearl horizon
#

My first dedicated gpu was an Radeon 2000 32mb or something like that. Cost me a fortune - like $50!

gentle moss
#

Voodoo 2

#

:D

thorn snow
#

VODOO

gentle moss
#

Voodoo 2 then a TNT2

pearl horizon
#

The coolest thing I ever did with a floppy was write a bootloader in assembly. It was able to 'boot' the computer, enable 16-bit mode in the cpu, and print a single character to the screen. Then just sat there nop'ing until you power cycled

gentle moss
#

:D

#

that's pretty cool

thorn snow
gentle moss
#

i'm really impressed by some of that hardware music

#

the guy with the fucking orchestra setup is cray

#

scanners, hdd's and flops

#

he uses the read arm to create percussion with the HDD's

#

:D

pearl horizon
#

Ima have to check that out once I get back on the computer. Never really looked into floppy music. But the sound of floppies being read is strangely soothing, much like dialup connections haha

thorn snow
#

The dialup sounds actually mean something

#

It's basically the modems negotiating a speed

#

ethernet still does this, just without sound

gentle moss
#

what always gets me is that they didn't have to pipe that sound out the modem

pearl horizon
#

Yep. I didn't know what was going on with it, but eventually I read into the meaning of individual chirps

gentle moss
#

but it was reassuring to hear it

pearl horizon
#

Tried setting the option string to quiet it, but the syntax was weird, I was like 13 and broke it every time I tried to change it lol

gentle moss
#

some of my later modems just had a mute button on them

pearl horizon
#

I believe the modem sound output comes from further back in history. The original computer modems would not connect to a phone line. You would place the handset of the phone over the ports on the modem so that basically the modem speaker/mic talks to the phone

thorn snow
#

as seen in Wargames

pearl horizon
#

At least that's how I've read it. Never got online until around early 90s

gentle moss
#

controlling the switching arrays in phone systems through tones

#

?

thorn snow
#

No, you would put the phone on a speaker

gentle moss
#

ooooh, i see

#

sorry, misread

thorn snow
#

and the tones of the modem get transmitted like that

pearl horizon
#

I imagine that's partly where the nohup signal name comes from in *nix

thorn snow
#

well speaker and mic

gentle moss
#

old style modems

thorn snow
gentle moss
#

yeah, i'm with you now

pearl horizon
#

Yep. Speaker talks to your phone, phone talks to modem mic

thorn snow
#

That movie was spot on

#

no bs

gentle moss
#

such a classic

thorn snow
#

no dude having a PSU in his hand and yelling "We found his hard drive!"

gentle moss
#

hahaha

#

what's that from?

thorn snow
#

CSI

gentle moss
#

sigh

#

NCIS still holds the title for worst hacking scene

#

you seen that one?

thorn snow
#

Eh, Criminal Minds

#

I love that show but the tech babble is sometimes unbearable

gentle moss
#

this is...

#

next level bad

undone berry
#

I feel like that NCIS technical scene is the result of someone with actual technical knowledge wanting to fuck with other nerds so included the dumbest hacking scene he could

gentle moss
#

hah

#

it's the fucking double keyboard

#

jesus christ

undone berry
#

Anyone whos' used a typewrite knows 2 people can't use a keyboard together - its honestly pretty hilarious

thorn snow
#

If normies knew how boring hacking actually is

#

like, visually

gentle moss
#

oh yeah, it's dull as shit

pearl horizon
#

Nice video. Haven't seen War games I don't think

gentle moss
#

it's just... not exciting

thorn snow
#

I mean, I can send off a hping3 and you don't see shit

#

you can't even tell if it worked most of the time

pearl horizon
#

I did something similar in high school actually

thorn snow
#

like a reflection attack has no visible output for you

pearl horizon
#

Obviously not hacking into the school or anything. But I did scan a few report cards and photoshop them so parents don't get upset for my friends lol

gentle moss
#

"yeah i just sent a phishing email to the CEO. he opened the attachment and now i have presence on his machine. i'll sit and sniff some NTLM hashes and try some replay attacks over the next two months."

pearl horizon
#

Was a little tricky because they used some watermarks and background patterns to prevent photoshop edits. Managed to line everything up perfectly. Their background pattern was too easy 😆

gentle moss
#

"i found this massive cache of documents, dunno what they are but they're under a 'payroll' folder. i'll just exfiltrate them over the course of half a year."

thorn snow
#

@pearl horizon You should watch it, it is such a good movie

gentle moss
#

"oh i was just scanning the internet and this dipshit left his S3 bucket unsecured. loads of stuff in here."

thorn snow
#

you may or may not find something on yt regarding that full movie

pearl horizon
#

Looks like something I'd be interested in. Pretty sure I saw Hackers, or Shoes or something like that

#

Wait, sneakers. Not shoes lmao

thorn snow
#

Wargames is one of the first hacker movies and it is praised until today

gentle moss
#

"hey man, i've got control over this municipal water supply in France."

#

"oh cool, how'd you break in?"

#

"break in? they left a VNC open to the internet with no authentication."

thorn snow
#

Another good one is Jonny Mnemonic

gentle moss
#

hahaha

#

Johnny Mnemonic

#

:D

undone berry
#

I think it was Wargames where the US president asked technical people if it was possible - and they answered maybe

gentle moss
#

i think so charlie

#

was around the time mitnik got fucked

thorn snow
#

@gentle moss What about it bisk?

gentle moss
#

"he could launch nukes with a phone and a whistle!"

pearl horizon
#

Wasn't there in the past several years a real life event where a nuclear reactor monitor/control system was hacked into? Might have been a US Navy vessel

gentle moss
#

jones.

#

the hacker.

thorn snow
#

The encryption based on the picture actually made sense

gentle moss
#

i love that movie, it's so bad.

#

i don't want to spoil the big surprise for anyone who hasn't seen it

thorn snow
#

I mean I know what you mean, probably, it's still sci fi

#

but the principles were sound

undone berry
gentle moss
#

oh lord

pearl horizon
#

That's possibly the one I was thinking of. But yeah, lots and lots of 'it was already open' breaches last few years

gentle moss
#

the biggest security threat of them all

#

USERS

undone berry
#

Just get rid of the users and it will be fine

thorn snow
#

The professional IT term here is Layer 8

#

don't forget the OSI layers

gentle moss
#

haha

#

never thought of that

pearl horizon
#

Also found a interesting read on Stripe and their 'feature' where they track user mouse movements on seemingly any page which has the Stripe Javascript file included -- even if it is never actually called

https://mtlynch.io/stripe-recording-its-customers/

gentle moss
#

my boss likes to call them wetware

pearl horizon
#

nice! new blog post i started last night is now finished, and deployed onto GitHub Pages

#

not really very good at writing stuff for blog entries at the moment. but i can sure as hell write a lot

#

figure the more i get into it, the better i'll get. as an added bonus, using bootstrap for the layout/design of the site and i figured out how to make those nifty warning/info/message boxes through rST

undone berry
#

What was it about?

pearl horizon
#

Basically it details two different methods to push static-site generator content onto GitHub Pages. Either the username page, or the project-level page. Kind of just reiterates the standard steps for doing so, but also including my own thoughts on the process and the methods I use to keep it simple

placid torrent
#

ehm guys

#

permission 06755 is bad, right?

#

the last 5 is over, right?

soft violet
#

Looks like rwxr-xr-x with a setuid and setgid.

#

So the owner can read, write, and execute, and group members and plebeians can read and execute.

rough sapphire
#

Actually execute permission for the world is not a very good idea

pearl horizon
#

Right, generally I use 750. At least for the stuff in my webserver docroot anyway

#

I think at least. Not feeling to go digging in there and it's been a while since I have. I need sleep anyway

tacit flint
#

where do file permissions / security contexts / ACLs get stored?

gentle moss
#

ah fuck sake

#

i have to go into the office to PAT test equipment -.-

#

well that's saturday fucked up

gentle moss
#

[01:54] aliver: Actually execute permission for the world is not a very good idea

#

depends on the context, but without execute perms for all you can't browse directories

#

as an example.

#

having to traverse a 750/640 file system, zzz

#

hey @rough sapphire

#

check this blackbird i saw yesterday eating mah bwed

stuck meteor
#

does someone know how to specify what python version to use for running a py script in kali linux?

#

like ./Script.py

gentle moss
#

you can sometimes get away with a shebang

#

#!/usr/bin/python

#

type thing

#

although the best way is to use env

#

#!/usr/bin/env python3.6 f.ex

stuck meteor
#

where to put this, at the beginning of script?

gentle moss
#

yup, first line.

#

a little bit about shebangs

#

there are a number of uses for them

#

including preventing standalone execution

stuck meteor
#

double free or corruption (out) Aborted

#

what can be this error caused by

gentle moss
#

not a clue

#

smells like someone broke something in memory?

stuck meteor
#

like i don't know, i run the script, it starts , but when it comes to put a command it just crashes

#

and shows this error

gentle moss
#

i couldn't possibly say, especially without seeing the script

stuck meteor
#

it's multiple scripts

#

but i think is the main one that causes the error

gentle moss
#

a quick google seems to suggest it's a malloc problem

stuck meteor
#

i tried in googling but only gives c++ results

#

never got this error tbh

gentle moss
#

yeah, that's all i'm seeing.

#

maybe it's something to do with the underlying parts of python. you might want to ask in a help channel?

stuck meteor
#

not sure if its related to python

rough sapphire
sand goblet
#

really, wamp?

#

what do you need wamp for

rough sapphire
#

ahh there are some files on one of my window remote desktop and i wanna share 'em so........

sand goblet
#

so use folder sharing?

#

or sftp?

rough sapphire
#

I wanna do it over internet

#

so it is easy for everyone

#

why are you using windows?

#

as a server

#

I mean I don't know why I'm not using so might as well ask 🤔

#

aws always offers to setup windows servers but i've never done it

#

maybe it's worth trying

#

does it require a license or something

#

windows as a server

#

no

#

@rough sapphire have you tried it

#

don't

#

it is my secondary workbench

#

unfortunately yes

#

@rough sapphire what's wrong with it

#

cuz i run things on very low bandwidth on my own PC

#

my first few minecraft servers ran on a windows server

#

"what's wrong with it" it's ass from a management perspective

gentle moss
#

AWS windows servers cost more than linux servers. but if you're on free tier i imagine that's not a problem.

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire so what's right with it

#

gimme the pros AND cons

gentle moss
#

the "rightest" thing about windows servers

#

is active directory.

rough sapphire
#

can i setup active directory on linux

gentle moss
#

no.

solid pollen
#

Please, not windows server

#

not that crap

rough sapphire
#

well people seem to be very vocal about it at least...

gentle moss
#

there are linux alternatives to AD but they don't work as well at managing a windows environment.

#

kerberos / OpenLDAP

#

for managing a company loaded with Windows machines, a Windows server is the best solution.

rough sapphire
#

just saw the message about screenwipe, what channel was it on?

gentle moss
#

it's not out yet, it's in progress.

solid pollen
#

I guess yeah, for managing access to windows machine, using windows server is fair

rough sapphire
#

I no want php now

gentle moss
#

not just access, but also configuring the computers etc.

#

group policy allows you to tightly control what desktops in the fleet can / can't do

solid pollen
#

Yeah that's fair

#

Group policy are a bit of mess though

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire go find "visual c++ runtime installation" you need them

#

the version number needs to be that one

#

Fuck wamp then

#

it's not a WAMP problem

gentle moss
#

to paraphrase Peter O'Hanra-Hanrahan @solid pollen: i don't like it, but i'll have to go along with it.

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire just install them, many programs need it

solid pollen
#

Yep, that's how Windows work

rough sapphire
#

I am just gonna ssh into my other linux server and upload it there and can download it from that server then easy as that

gentle moss
#

so you have a linux server

#

but you're installing a WAMP stack

#

o_O

rough sapphire
#

I have 6 linux and 1 windows server

#

@gentle moss so there is a wolf, two lambs, and a carrot

gentle moss
#

haha world

rough sapphire
#

sorry, a cabbage

gentle moss
#

stick the carrot into the first lamb

#

feed the other lamb to the wolf

rough sapphire
#

lol

gentle moss
#

cross the river

rough sapphire
#

🛬

#

done

#

wah my last two yoghurts went bad

#

went halfway through them but couldn't eat them.

gentle moss
#

have you thought about maybe installing a LAMP stack on one of those linux servers?

rough sapphire
#

I'd think about linux+nginx+postgresql+php stack

gentle moss
#

a LEPP stack

rough sapphire
#

LAMP
Apache mysql php

#

what's the E?

#

and one more something with L name

#

what was that

gentle moss
#

Linux.

rough sapphire
#

yeah

gentle moss
#

Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP

rough sapphire
#

That is a good naming

gentle moss
#

Windows, Apache, Mysql, PHP

#

WAMP, LAMP.

rough sapphire
#

xampp

#

the apache+mysql are a bit of a "noob stack" imho

solid pollen
#

I mean.. MySQL, PHP.. How hard do you hate yourself?

gentle moss
#

wouldn't call it a noob stack, some people have legitimate reasons to use apache

rough sapphire
#

well the mysql is noob

#

it's just shit

gentle moss
#

how so?

rough sapphire
#

apache is best

#

f nginx

#

well that's certainly a dividing opinion for no reason

#

what's wrong with mysql?

#

mysql compared to postgresql is like comparing javascript to anything else

gentle moss
#

that's dumb

rough sapphire
#

not really

solid pollen
#

I quite like nginx personally

gentle moss
#

so dumb.

rough sapphire
#

apache2 is the easiest thing i have ever seen

gentle moss
#

yes, apache2 is easier to setup for PHP than Nginx.

rough sapphire
#

postgresql is a serious DB

#

what's wrong with mysql, again?

gentle moss
#

mysql runs a shit load of the planet my friend

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire for instance default datatypes

#

and validations

#

validations like ACID?

#

and some type coercions if I remember

#

postgres > mysql

solid pollen
#

I heard some people having more issues with MySQL than other engines personally

rough sapphire
#

@solid pollen because mysql is far more used than other engines

gentle moss
#

^

rough sapphire
#

there's something quite amusing to me about being on a python discord where people are shitting on php and don't see the irony

solid pollen
#

Yeah

gentle moss
#

besides if you're comparing postgres to mysql the most important thing you should mention is that postgres is object-related

#

rather than pure relational

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

rough sapphire
#

databases suck anyways

#

i store my data in the cloud

solid pollen
#

if you say so haha

rough sapphire
#

you can dig that out for anything if you look enough

#

I store my data in discord channels

#

why backup

#

when you have discord storing it

gentle moss
#

a whole article about why uber moved to mysql from postgres

solid pollen
#

and he actually do it haha

rough sapphire
#

Linus Torvalds: “Real men don’t use backups, they post their stuff on a public ftp server and let the rest of the world make copies.”

#

^

#

@gentle moss interesting

gentle moss
#

neither is better than the other

rough sapphire
#

neither is better than the other
@gentle moss this

gentle moss
#

in certain areas they're bound to outperform each other

rough sapphire
#

also this

gentle moss
#

the biggest bitch about mysql is how it sometimes deviates from SQL standards

#

and the fact it's owned by Oracle

#

so just use MariaDB instead.

#

:D

rough sapphire
#

and the fact it's owned by Oracle
@gentle moss that is the single biggest reason people hate on it i think

#

i still stand by postgresql for now. the biggest flaw with is that the name is pronounced stupidly: postgres-ql

gentle moss
#

yeah. i moved our company away from MySQL onto MariaDB because fuck big red.

#

MariaDB is functionally identical to MySQL anyhow.

rough sapphire
#

on the subjet of dbs, have you done any work with mongo bisk?

gentle moss
#

no and i hear it's a tyre fire so i plan not to

rough sapphire
#

what's wrong with mongo ??

#

just kidding

undone berry
#

No reason to ever touch mongo

#

At least not that I know of

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry how close are we to a finished game? should we go make one

#

lets see the speed of aws (asia-mumbai) machine to google(us-west) machine
uploading to google from aws

undone berry
#

Well, I just woke up. The backend is ahead of the frontend at this point. I'll push what I have in a little while, and carry on working at it

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry mmkay. i'll just dick around until somebody yells at me again.

#

perfect

gentle moss
#

remember that cross region data transfers in AWS cost more than local

#

i doubt you're downloading enough to break the free tier limit

#

just a heads up

rough sapphire
#

yeah so i just gonna do asia to asia

#

does distance matters ?

#

for bandwidth

gentle moss
#

sorta.

sand goblet
#

in Ireland at least, it's illegal for a company to send you emails and not allow you to opt out

#

since long before GDPR

#

so most emails have an unsubscribe link

stark prawn
#

That's an eu thing

sand goblet
#

so let's say you click the unsubscribe link and..

#

I wonder if there would be a case where you could require companies to not do that with legally mandatory links like that

gentle moss
#

hmmm...

#

that's an interesting one actually

stark prawn
#

Huh? This seems like it's on your blocking software

sand goblet
#

it is

#

but

#

I have this software for a reason

gentle moss
#

but the unsubscribe link is tracking you

sand goblet
#

yeah

gentle moss
#

which seems...

stark prawn
#

How would they know who to unsubscribe without it?

sand goblet
#

by just sending me to the inevitable mailchimp form

gentle moss
#

^

#

the site you go through to knows who you are

#

why stick tracking shit in there?

sand goblet
#

I get why they do it

#

It's because they want to know which emails people click unsubscribe on

stark prawn
#

You can't have unsubscribe forms, just clicking the link needs to be enough to unsubscribe.

gentle moss
#

i agree with that grote

#

that's how it should be

#

i should click it and it should take me somewhere that says

stark prawn
#

That's how the law is isn't it?

sand goblet
#

it's not

#

they can have a form

gentle moss
#

"we're so sorry for wasting your time with this bullshit. here have a picture of a sad panda to show how much we miss you being part of our dataset"

#

the form is like "why did you want to leave?" etc

sand goblet
#

this is an email from a kickstarter amusingly

#

they sent me 3 emails today

#

from a project that I had backed, was successful, and I already had shipped to me

#

Months ago.

#

also, this is a different subject, but I ordered a shirt today and was pleasantly surprised to find they actually ship from the EU

#

teepublic, thanks for that.

gentle moss
#

whaaaaaaaaaaaat

sand goblet
#

yeah, I know

#

no $50 shipping and $50 customs fee

stark prawn
#

$50 shipping damn

gentle moss
#

yeah, when i got myself some Adam Savage tshirts the import cost was mad

stark prawn
#

I rarely import from abroad. But when I do it at times end up cheaper than shipping even nationally.

#

$2 + free shpping from china.

#

While national shipping is already that price

sand goblet
#

tell you what

#

Irish customs are thorough

#

if you import something via eg addresspal

#

they email you to ask you what it is and how much you paid for it

#

AND MAN

#

if you got it on kickstarter

#

they are not doing customs on the kickstarter price

#

they are doing it based on full price

gentle moss
#

oof

#

poor bastard

#

pre-amazon i remember my most expensive import cost was a german pop cd i had to get from a record shop in germany because nowhere else online sold it

#

CD was like £35 but the import tax was about £30

stark prawn

The car insurance industry is wild, they get away with all sorts of discrimination

gentle moss
#

and tbh, i don't disagree with him

undone berry
#

The insurance industry is built on the idea of discrimination. Just have to keep one step back from being illegal

gentle moss
#

indeed

undone berry
#

It used to be that new male drivers were charged nearly double new female drivers

#

in the uk

#

But the EU put a stop to that

gentle moss
#

so they raised everyone's rates

undone berry
#

yeah, exactly. The entire insurance industry is algorithmic prejudice

gentle moss
#

yup

#

that's why i try to avoid dealing with them as much as possible

#

the only time i crashed into a dude (at 5mph) i offered to pay all his repairs and signed and dated a piece of paper then and there

i kept my noclaims

technically i have uhhh

I'd have to walk 20 miles both way through the corona every single day.

hi

sand thicket
#

I went through python internals in the hopes to contribute to python by going through bugs.python.org
But that was too hard to even understand what's going on, leave alone fixing stuff, I wondered where everyone else began?

#

Mainly I am speaking of finding bugs or contributing a piece of code to python.

plucky ridge
#

@sand thicket When it comes to contributing to projects, the first (and really only) I've ever done is with our projects here. Honestly just learning how the whole process in general works can give you a leg up

rough sapphire
#

The nightmare that I had last night was that I woke up and my entire container of coffee was decaf haha

#

That is probably the funniest dream im ever had when i think about it

plucky ridge
#

All I can see in my head is you just opening it up and just being like "The fuck is this shit"

#

And then you wake up

#

Like nothing else to it

rough sapphire
#

That really is the only detail i recall

plucky ridge
#

Magical

thorn snow
#

I just bought 100ml of disinfectant

#

which vein does it go into?

plucky ridge
#

Oh you saw that too, huh?

#

Did you also make sure to pick up the injectable light?

thorn snow
#

I swallowed my case fans. Problem solved.

plucky ridge
#

Aces

#

Not only will you be free of germs but you'll also be cool to the touch

rough sapphire
#

okay so... trump didn't actually say that "put disinfectant in your veins"

#

let's be honest about that

undone berry
#

no one said he did - but that was what he implied

rough sapphire
#

he said "it might be an idea worth looking into" which is basically what any 6-year old would do when they hear that there are things that kill bacteria

gentle moss
#

yes, he's a moron.

#

"oh it kills the virus on tables and kitchen surfaces? we should look into that for people."

#

as if disinfectant doesn't have shit loads of warning labels over it

#

but i guess he'd never know that because he pays people to clean for him

#

and also he can't read

thorn snow
#

He said "maybe we should inject that"

#

so yeah he did and he is a freaking moron for just implying it

rough sapphire
#

I kinda read that he was trying to give them "science people" some advice

thorn snow
#

yeah well he isn't in the position to do so

rough sapphire
#

which he felt he was super-equipped to do

thorn snow
#

he does not have the brains nor the education

gentle moss
#

dettol and other brands have had to put out statements

#

telling people not to drink the stuff

#

because that's the world now.

#

a fucking moron says dumb shit on TV and his fans drink bleach

thorn snow
#

no

#

There are a few Americans I idolize, Trump isn't even a consideration

gentle moss
#

he's the brightest orange man in the US though

#

as in, he's bright orange.

thorn snow
#

For example, John Carmack has always been my Idol

gentle moss
#

man i love carmack

#

i miss quakecon keynotes :(

#

his keynotes would basically outline what new tech was going to emerge

#

and damn if he wasn't right every single time

rough sapphire
#

did he die or something

#

why are you talking about him like that

gentle moss
#

no, he doesn't work for id Software anymore

#

so he doesn't do QuakeCon keynotes

rough sapphire
#

so what does he do

gentle moss
#

works for Oculus

#

hearing him talk about VR is far less interesting than him talking about the future of graphics every year.

thorn snow
#

When he tweeted about solving latency issues, that was pretty interesting though

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

carmack has always been big on latency reduction

#

in DOOM and Quake it was one thing he heavily pushed for

#

id Software engines tend to feel pretty snappy compared to say, Unreal engine

#

so it's nice he's bringing that mentality to VR

thorn snow
#

He had to, to battle motion sickness with VR

gentle moss
#

aye

#

your eyes being like 100ms behind your brain would be fucky

#

i think i'm buying a VR set with this bonus i got

also stop pirating stuff
@gentle moss how

gentle moss
#

i think that DLL is from the game Mad Max

low shadow

yes

#

how did u know

gentle moss

and the fact it's throwing up massive amounts of red flags on virus total tells me it's pirated

because i can use google.

low shadow

oh being pirated throwed the flag

so its not trojan

gentle moss

no, it could be

yeah

there have be many cases of pirate copies of games containing malware

plucky ridge
#

Still at work

rough sapphire
#

not sure how that's mutually exclusive

#

actually, this brings up a question i've always wondered about

#

are workspaces in the US legally required to have "rest rooms" - ie not shitters, but actual rooms where you can go rest (with like a sofa or a bed or shit)

#

because it's a thing in estonia

#

and i'm fairly certain it's an european thing

#

@rough sapphire hwat...?

plucky ridge
#

Not a thing here

#

Well, actually

rough sapphire
#

those haven't caught up in finland. I mean we probably have a legal coffee room or something but

#

if you have an office, you're supposed to have a room where employees can go and rest

plucky ridge
#

Break rooms are for certain industries

rough sapphire
#

not "rest room"

pine vector
#

yeah. not a thing here, like what hem just said. but i'm going to type it again. because hem said it.

plucky ridge
#

Yeah break room is the term

rough sapphire
#

right

plucky ridge
#

Sommer is my echo

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire is it really in the law

pine vector

rough sapphire

plucky ridge

plucky ridge

GOD if only that was appropriate to make into an ot name

rough sapphire
#

but my boss did say something about it being a thing

plucky ridge
#

Because I would in a heart beat

pine vector
plucky ridge
#

It's possible. I think it's more that breaks/lunches are mandatory and you usually don't want your employees to be spending their break time where they work, especially if it's something like grocery or something

#

So the break room just naturally comes as a part of that

pine vector
#

its sad that i saw this as i read hem's "Sorry, what"

plucky ridge
#

You're not wrong

rough sapphire
#

aye, an "accommodation area/break room" is required by the EU law apparently

plucky ridge
#

I thought it was "We are Venom"

rough sapphire
#

aye, an "accommodation area/break room" is required by the EU law apparently
@rough sapphire source on that? doesn't sound right to me at all

plucky ridge
#

pine vector

goes on to say: can't eat in the bathroom or exposed to toxic material, and needs sanitary food storage. that's about it. there may be building codes that apply though...

#

and of course, state-by-state rules.

@rough sapphire what if you're working remotely

This provision does not apply if the workers are employed in offices or similar workrooms providing equivalent relaxation during breaks``` Sounds like they're optional if you have timed/scheduled breaks

I've heard rumours of Discord staff occasionally searching messages for stuff like that

@thorn snow I'm sure nobody found it particularly offensive, but we do have a younger audience here and, yes, it was dough, but the implications were pretty clear

undone berry

Mine is the same - except there's a route you can take where you end up at the tills without going past anything, so its just ended up with no one following the system unless its busy af

gentle moss
#

they've blocked off all the cross-aisle routes in this one with promotional supplies

#

in some places it seems like they were running out of promotional shelves to block stuff off with

so there's a whisky promotion next to the baby aisle

They limit the number of people in a store during busy times here instead

gentle moss

we have both

Yeah - they do both here

But the one way system seems OTT

gentle moss

i'm pretty forgetful when shopping so it's a bit of a bitch

i even wrote a list with butter bolded and underlined and still walked past it

ah well, i've got enough for a few days and some of that imposter butter

low shadow

how would i represent 10 in ASCII

when 9 is changed to 10 it gives error
