rough sapphire
#

you said you got 20 years of experience

gentle moss
#

i'm 31 and i've been on the internet since i was 10 - 11

rough sapphire
#

damn

#

That's a long time πŸ™‚

gentle moss
#

it's also why i view this is a user education issue rather than a flaw with the technology.

#

when you go on IRC your IP is exposed to world+dog unless you're using a proxy

rough sapphire
#

How old do you reckon I am?

#

you are true yes

gentle moss
#

and getting DDoS'd wasn't super common

rough sapphire
#

IRC isn't being used alot anymore tho

gentle moss
#

it is. it really is.

rough sapphire
#

I don't know anyone using IRC to chat

gentle moss
#

IRC is still massive

rough sapphire
#

hmm

gentle moss
#

twitch chat runs on IRC, for example.

rough sapphire
#

It does?

gentle moss
#

it does.

rough sapphire
#

I don't really know alot about IRC

#

Only that alot of forums etc died on it

gentle moss
#

it's an excellent chat protocol, hence why it's still used.

rough sapphire
#

yes

gentle moss
#

and i guess you're maybe 19 - 22

rough sapphire
#

not that close haha

#

younger

gentle moss
#

kind of being polite about it tbh :P

rough sapphire
#

thinking ?

gentle moss
#

user education is a super important issue in this day and age especially

rough sapphire
#

yes

#

But I'm looking through the perspective of my age generation

gentle moss
#

and it's not helpful to blame technologies for their structure, when the issue lies at lack of education etc.

rough sapphire
#

And trust me when I'm in school I don't think you can ask 99% what p2p is lol

gentle moss
#

yeah, and that's the problem.

rough sapphire
#

I'm just looking and defending the perspective of 14/15 year olds

gentle moss
#

people just aren't as aware as they could / should be about their digital safety

#

i mean even people in my age range aren't that well educated about it.

rough sapphire
#

It's mostly because children are very naive

gentle moss
#

i had loads of exposure to technology from a young age and it's given me a leg up

rough sapphire
#

I think that's the main issue

#

yes same

#

Learning from mistakes ^^

gentle moss
#

yes, but also being given enough information to make an informed choice.

#

Skype totally did that by saying it was a P2P system. it was just on you if you didn't know what that involved.

rough sapphire
#

True thing

#

Hence why I can see your opinion

#

But through the perspective of 14/15 year olds I don't think that's the case

gentle moss
#

it's not their fault they're dumb :')

#

Β¬_Β¬

rough sapphire
#

Dumb is a big word schools just don't pay enough attention to it πŸ™‚

#

🎡 Young Dumb , Young dumb and brokeeeeeeeeeee 🎢

#

At the highest levels of my school people just start with html

gentle moss
#

at my job i have to deal with people of a load of age ranges

#

technological ignorance goes beyond age range

#

there are people i've had to tell the same thing like ~15+ times and they still don't learn.

rough sapphire
#

I think It's safe to say that most kids are less intelligent then some but not dumb

#

Also have you ever worked with epoll()?

#

teenagers are dumb

plucky ridge
#

I find it's less about people being dumb and more being unwilling to learn

rough sapphire
#

Hey don't offend me πŸ™‚

#

like me

gentle moss
#

yeah hemlock

rough sapphire
#

you aren't only teen here ;-;

gentle moss
#

for a lot of people it's like

#

"well, it's just my job. why bother to learn?"

#

"support is always there."

plucky ridge
#

Well interestingly, we have a person here named Karen

rough sapphire
#

Well

gentle moss
#

does she work in HR?

plucky ridge
#

And by god she lives up to the meme stereotype

terse sluice
#

ah karen

plucky ridge
#

Nope

gentle moss
#

hah

rough sapphire
#

Learning is mostly about what people want to learn

#

And what interests them

#

in their spare time

#

hahahahaha

plucky ridge
#

To a point

undone berry
#

I also know a Karen that fits the meme perfectly

gentle moss
#

weirdly

rough sapphire
#

Can I talk to your manager?

gentle moss
#

i know one who sorta fits it

rough sapphire
#

I don't see 15 year olds being interested by these kind of topics

#

mostly

gentle moss
#

AND she works in HR

rough sapphire
#

Who are we talking about

gentle moss
#

Karens.

plucky ridge
#

Her mentality is literally "I know you're showing me how to do it, but I'd rather you just do it"

#

And it's something that's like

#

2 clicks

gentle moss
#

in terms of education of people in jobs, part of the issue of people not learning stuff and having to be told repeatedly is that it's bad for the business

plucky ridge
#

And we're in god damn tax season

#

No I'm not going to come running to fix that

gentle moss
#

makes their job more frustrating because they wont learn

rough sapphire
#

I wanna say a word that mean it , but someone will get triggered here

gentle moss
#

and loses work hours.

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire I'm proud of you for holding back then

rough sapphire
#

TY

#

😊

gentle moss
#

if users actually got better at using computers, their own work lives would be much easier

#

at least imo

plucky ridge
#

Agreed

rough sapphire
#

or atleast read the instruction

plucky ridge
#

Not to mention it would start to connect the dots for other computer issues they may have

terse sluice
#

speeds up the workflow so much

gentle moss
#

i'm very pro-user education over technical solutions

plucky ridge
#

As we should be

gentle moss
#

you can stick in as many different technical solutions to try and make a system usable by a chimp

plucky ridge
#

What's the saying? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?

#

Certainly applies here

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

throwing IT at (l)users is sometimes even counter productive

rough sapphire
#

You guys were allowed to write code in exams with a pencil ?

gentle moss
#

i never took no exams

plucky ridge
#

Allowed to?

#

We were required

#

We had a professor that wouldn't even let you use a computer for writing one of the programs in a test

#

But in fairness it was fairly simple

rough sapphire
#

my teacher says it will be considered rough work if done by pencils.

gentle moss
#

what are you supposed to do then? punch holes in the paper to make punch cards?

rough sapphire
#

use pens , to write 6-7 lines of code

#

we have practicals later. in which you have to do same but first in the PC

frosty berry
#

i've had to implement C programs on paper in exams.

rough sapphire
#

That's hard lol

#

C is my main language but I wouldn't say that some things are good to write on paper

#

Can't wait to give exam tomorrow and point out 10-15 mistake in a 28 question paper

#

What are the questions about?

#

basic python, numpy, mysql, virus, working of hdd , converting 10 base to 2 base

#

hm

gentle moss
#

hdd go zoom zoom zoom wiggle wiggle read dem magnets

#

then it go kerrchuck kerrchuck kerrrchuckchuckchuckuckuckuck bewwww

#

name the type of HDD failure i just described Β¬_Β¬

frosty berry
#

the error is that it's spinning rust

gentle moss
#

close enough, head crash

#

:D

frosty berry
#

also, your hdd is a computer pretending to be a tape drive from the 80s

gentle moss
#

back in the day i had some naaaasty sounding hdd's

rough sapphire
#

What would 10base to 2 base conversion be used for

#

I actually know little to none on this topic lol

gentle moss
#

converting dec to bin

rough sapphire
#

meaning ?

gentle moss
#

decimal to binary

rough sapphire
#

ohh

frosty berry
#

the computer works with binary

#

so it's kind of useful to understand how to convert between that and what humans use, well, most of them anyway

gentle moss
#

there's 10 types of people in this world

#

those who understand binary

#

and those who don't

undone berry
#

And those who don't realise that is base 3

rough sapphire
#

I was just gonna ask

gentle moss
#

:D

solid pollen
#

Base.. 3?

frosty berry
#

sure, any (positive, natural) number can be used as a base to represent numbers.

rough sapphire
#

that's not all!

#

you can do Weird Shit too!

gentle moss
#

Base e

frosty berry
#

hm, i have a hard time imagining how you could have parts of a symbole

gentle moss
#

idk, maths people are weird as fuck. i'm sure they'd try.

rough sapphire
#

that's not how math works

#

math doesn't care about your puny imagination!

frosty berry
#

i know that

rough sapphire
#

trying to look for some of those weird things. one moment.

frosty berry
#

i mean, you can use base as simply a power base and manage the whole thing in the abstruct

rough sapphire
#

i remember the golden ratio being a weird system

frosty berry
#

but it won't allow you to represent the number in the base itself, you won't have the figures for it, as far as i can tell

rough sapphire
gentle moss
#

that's...

#

wow.

rough sapphire
#

they have funny properties like having multiple representations for same numbers

gentle moss
#

see, i told you maths people are weird

rough sapphire
#

this turns me on hmmmhmhm

solid pollen
#

I mean, base 3 is fine, but why would you use it though

frosty berry
#

oh i think we knew math people are weird, and yeah, i know they don't care if this doesn't fit any particular purpose, i'm probably a bit too practical to be a math person.

gentle moss
#

i like to know about the stuff but i don't want to learn it

rough sapphire
#

there's even a complex number basis

#

proposed by none other than mr. donald knuth

undone berry
#

I mean, base 3 is fine, but why would you use it though there are a few weird algorithms and tricks that only work in certain bases

gentle moss
#

tbh i quite like base 12

#

and i understand the movement to standardise it

#

but i'm not that passionate about it

rough sapphire
#

oh shoot is this against the rules

gentle moss
#

no

rough sapphire
#

but what if I get kicked again

#

or like muted

#

because it's inappropriate language or something

gentle moss
#

i mean, meme dumps are frowned upon but swearing isn't that bad

rough sapphire
#

i'm trying to learn to not meme my way into bans out of half of discord servers in the world

undone berry
#

Yeah. I'm the same with base 12. Obviously better than 10, but not worth the effort of switching

rough sapphire
#

hahaha

#

like, i usually get a stern warning of some kind from the mods within the first week or so

#

@undone berry where is your role ?

gentle moss
#

code jam is over

solid pollen
#

The jam has ended

#

Bisk lost it too

#

I did too, but you can’t really notice it

rough sapphire
#

I thought it was permanent

gentle moss
#

nooo

rough sapphire
solid pollen
#

Yes

#

I mean, you haven't already spotted this message? :D

rough sapphire
#

not this one

solid pollen
#

There is also the add author:username

#

And something about the date I think

gentle moss
#

oh jesus fuck shit ass

#

when i cleaned up our ticket database i missed about 1000 tickets

#

so i was like "okay, i'll use the ticket delete tool they provide with the software. that'll work."

#

the ticket delete tool deleted all the fucking databases and all the backups

#

it deleted everything

#

:|

autumn herald
#

Wow arz you serious

gentle moss
#

yeah, i am fucking freaking out

#

good thing i made a backup and moved it off the machine at 9am today

#

i mean i wanted to remove 22k tickets in total

#

i didn't want to lose all our backups and our current tickets

#

jesus christ

autumn herald
#

Ah it didnt remove your back up of backup

#

Nice you're smart af

#

I'd be already fired if i were you

gentle moss
#

yeah, i was working on the database so i copied it the fuck everywhere

#

when the ticket database backs itself up it creates a backup/ folder in its root directory

#

but the ticket_delete.exe literally just deleted EVERYTHING in the root directory

#

holy shit i'm still having a heart attack

jagged fog
#

I registered for Amazon aws and now I'm waiting for the sms confirmation code but it's not coming nepwut

gentle moss
#

well everything's restored but how can a ticket_delete.exe which is supposed to remove stuff from a .db file end up destroying the entire install

#

i guess when it flashed up "FATAL ERROR" an instant before deleting everything it wasn't kidding

autumn herald
#

Rofl

#

Did your heart skipped a beat

#

I just imagine you with a brandy or smthg

frosty berry
#

picturing bisk with full white hair

gentle moss
#

i am still recovering

solid pollen
#

Well, ticket_delete.exe did what it was supposed to, delete tickets, including backups

gentle moss
#

it deleted the whole software

#

a little too efficient

jagged fog
#

oh God I had to talk to aws support on phone Sweat

autumn herald
#

To mark users as being removed from somthing at my job, my bosses 1sked them to have the status.TERMINATED

#

Every time i click them i imagine hiring a hitman

frosty berry

autumn herald
#

They can see this btw

gentle moss
#

harrrsh

#

time to go home and deal with the aftermath tomorrow -.-

autumn herald
#

Be safe

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss yo I got some OP code

royal lakeBOT
#

:incoming_envelope: :ok_hand: applied mute to @rough sapphire until 2020-02-13 18:18 (9 minutes and 59 seconds) (reason: newlines rule: sent 132 newlines in 10s).

rough sapphire
#

ok

#

just wait

#

if i was mod i would have removed it

#

OMG i hate this newlines rule

#

yay

plucky ridge
#

!paste

royal lakeBOT
#

Pasting large amounts of code

If your code is too long to fit in a codeblock in discord, you can paste your code here:
https://paste.pydis.com/

After pasting your code, save it by clicking the floppy disk icon in the top right, or by typing ctrl + S. After doing that, the URL should change. Copy the URL and post it here so others can see it.

plucky ridge
#

This is why we have the hastebin

gentle moss
#

132 lines is a lot of lines

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire It's not an unreasonable rule honestly. If you're on mobile, and you're chilling out having a conversation and then BAM

#

132 lines

gentle moss
#

i've seen some embeds which are like 32 lines and that blows an entire convo off the screen

plucky ridge
#

Yeah we try to pare them down as best we can but some of the embeds really need to have that much info

#

It's why we try to discourage too much tag or embed use

gentle moss
#

my heart attack is finally wearing off

plucky ridge
#

Like

#

Actual heart attack?

gentle moss
#

nah

#

i was trying to use a tool built into spiceworks to mass delete tickets older than 1 year because the search function was getting slow due to the size of the sqlite database

#

and upon launching ticket_delete.exe it just straight up deleted the entire root directory of spiceworks

#

all the backups in backups/

#

and the database

#

luckily i backed up the database at 9:30am to peruse it

plucky ridge
#

Did you tell it what you want?

#

What you really really want?

gentle moss
#

didn't get a chance

#

it just zigazig ahhh'd all the data

plucky ridge
#

🎢 If you wanna connect to mah servah, you gotta use this IP 🎢

gentle moss
#

🎡 handshakes last forever, connections never end 🎡

rough sapphire
#

🎼 Somebody once told me the world was gonna roll me 🎼

gentle moss
#

no scott.

#

no.

rough sapphire
#

🎹 I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed 🎹

plucky ridge
#

I can't hear you guys through all this dead to me

gentle moss
#

it's been

plucky ridge
#

You're on the list now too

rough sapphire
#

one week since something something something?

gentle moss
#

yes

#

that's a good song though

rough sapphire
#

There's a better version you gotta hear, one sec

gentle moss
#

especially the lyric "i couldn't get into too much sailor moon because it's got the boom anime chick that makes me think the wrong thing"

rough sapphire
#

You guys really listen to some weird things.

gentle moss
#

uhhh... it's called being older than you

#

your music is weird by our standards

#

you freak

rough sapphire
#

oldest band i heard is AC/DC or queen or beatles

plucky ridge
#

I cannot help it when I think you're funny when you're mad; trying hard not to smile though I feel bad. I'm the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral, can't understand what I meant well you soon will.

gentle moss
#

i can't help if i wear my mind on my sleeve, i have a history of taking off my shirt.

vestal briar
#

"oldest band i heard is AC/DC or queen or beatles"

#

Do you know what classical music is?

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss Whatcha think about that version

gentle moss
#

that's weird scott and i do not approve

rough sapphire
#

😦

gentle moss
#

it's too

rough sapphire
#

It's great

gentle moss
#

confusing

rough sapphire
#

nahhh @vestal briar

vestal briar
#

ACDC are good

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss "Too confusing"? It's Smooth Criminal instrumentals.

vestal briar
#

Just the vocals feel too high-pitched and fakey

gentle moss
#

yeah, with bare naked ladies on top

#

it's too confusing

vestal briar
#

It's like a very high pitched metal-like voice

rough sapphire
#

"Confusing"

#

🎡 You move to your left 🎡
wonder if someone can complete this one

vestal briar
#

TAKE A BACK NOW YALL

#

2 HOPS THIS TIME

gentle moss
#

wow, that's also weird

#

it's like someone tried to mash up two things which definitely don't belong together

rough sapphire
#

ok this one is gonna be surely completed
🎡 Tonight i am gonna have myself. a real good time 🎡

#

ONE MORE TIME

gentle moss
#

TO THE WINDOW TO THE WALL TILL THE SWEAT DRIP OF MY BALLS

#

is that it?

rough sapphire
#

where is "One more time" ?

#

Daft Punk

#

@gentle moss Yes/No on that one?

vestal briar
#

Most of ACDC are innuendos thinking about it

gentle moss
#

no, once again

rough sapphire
#

smh my head

gentle moss
#

they're pretty much mostly songs i like that have just been smashed into other songs i like

#

it's like a head on collision

rough sapphire
#

Something broke or your query returned nothing

#

ok

gentle moss
#

no. none of these.

vestal briar
rough sapphire
gentle moss
#

if they're all like this you can just assume my answer is no

solid pollen
#

Gotta hop channel

#

Guys, I'd like to create an archive of my whole C disk without two specific folders (those two are around 80% of my disk), any idea how I can do it?

rough sapphire
#

You say C disk, so I imagine this is Windows.

solid pollen
#

Yep

rough sapphire
#

Acronis was good when I had Windows as my main system

#

You should probably be able to do that

solid pollen
#

Last time I should use windows I hope

rough sapphire
#

Coming over to Linux?

solid pollen
#

Yep!

rough sapphire
#

What distro are you settling on?

solid pollen
#

I don't really want to use a backup software, I just want an archive of my disk in case I forgot to bring any file

#

Manjaro

rough sapphire
#

Oh, you can create an image of your disk then

#

Do you have enough space to backup everything?

solid pollen
#

On my D drive

rough sapphire
#

Sounds good. I'd use something like dd then

solid pollen
#

Those two folders are just games, can I just ignore them?

#

I could uninstall them and backup one by one I guess

stark prawn
#

You're not going with a dual boot to start?

solid pollen
#

Yes, but I want to take a fresh start for windows

#

I need to have a dual boot system, so I want to keep a fairly usable windows

autumn herald
#

I just have a backup of my Minecraft World

#

That's all

plucky ridge
#

I somehow just splashed my hair a little bit while drinking from my massive mug

#

I am confused

gentle moss
#

copy C:\ to a VHD

#

or boot on a linux USB stick and just do a block level copy

#

dd if=/dev/sda of=/somelocation.img

#

that type of thing

#

hmm... doing it without those two folders is a bit different though

#

if you want to archive it as an actual image it's a bit more complicated to exclude certain directories

#

maintaining a usable image file that can be pushed back to a partition and work as a valid install isn't quite just copying stuff

solid pollen
#

All games uninstalled, wasn't that hard actually

gentle moss
#

a dd copy btw will be the full size of the disk unless you do some magic

stark prawn
#

.img.xz

solid pollen
#

Ah yes but actually no

#

I want to highly compress it

#

I'll probably open it once a month

#

Not more

#

I like how press the "uninstall" button on unreal engine set the engine to the "installing" mode

gentle moss
#

get a clonezilla boot cd?

#

the compression cz is pretty good

solid pollen
#

But I don't want to boot it

gentle moss
#

but you're not going to be able to access it super easily

plucky ridge
#

Wow now that's a reference, brain. Mighty Mighty Boss Tones

solid pollen
#

I just want to browse the files

gentle moss
#

that's the impression that i get hemlock

plucky ridge
#

Yep

#

Exactly

#

Except it's the compression that I get

gentle moss
#

of the whole C drive?

#

hah

solid pollen
#

95Gb uncompressed, should be fine

#

Yes, all my junk is on another drive

gentle moss
#

why not just pin point the exact files you want to browse and zip them up?

#

o_O

solid pollen
#

I'm too afraid to forgot a file

gentle moss
#

they're most likely in the C:\user area

#

unless you're stashing porn in system32

solid pollen
#

C:\user is only 5Gb

gentle moss
#

sounds like you've been creating folders outside of user space

#

either that or your installed programs are massive

solid pollen
#

Yes, document, music and stuff are on anther drive

#

I have a fair amount of installed program

gentle moss
#

i mean Windows, if it's 10, is probably 30 - 40gb

#

on its own

solid pollen
#

I mean, photoshop 20Gb, allegorithmic suite 20Gb, Microsoft sdk (what is that thing) 30Gb

#

It goes up very quickly

gentle moss
#

photoshop is only like ~8gb max

#

not sure how backing up your software does you any favours?

solid pollen
#

Ah I forgot the rest of the suite

#

I have premier and dreamweaver

#

Yeah in that case it doesn't really matter

gentle moss
#

i mean if you've got the storage back everything up if you feel the need

#

but i'm pretty sure you're just going to have like 80gb of garbage at the end of it

#

and maybe 15gb of meaningful stuff

solid pollen
#

Probably..

gentle moss
#

you could use something like WinDirStat to audit your system?

solid pollen
#

I am looking at it right now

gentle moss
#

it'll show you what's using most of the file system in order

#

makes it easier to figure out maybe what you actually want to store

#

going through this whole process is why i never upgrade without buying a new HDD

#

just take the old one out and put a new one in

solid pollen
#

I actually only have 40Gb of programs

gentle moss
#

keep the backup forever

solid pollen
#

I have 4 drives

#

A 250 nvme with windows right now, I'll put Linux on it

#

A 1To HDD, I'll cut it in half for each OS, and put the backup on it

#

A 120Go SSD for all my dev stuff that I don't want to put on the HDD

gentle moss
#

i'd just create a clone image of the nvme on another drive that i can mount in future if i want to explore it

#

but i'm super lazy

solid pollen
#

And a 250Gb SSD for the new windows

#

Isn't creating a zip more lazy?

plucky ridge
#

super lazy
He has a cape, but he doesn't bother to put i ton

gentle moss
#

in fact when i upgrade to win 10 soon i'm literally just buying a 256gb SSD and taking my 64gb SSD out and putting it in a box

#

making a zip is messier and less lazy imo

#

i have a box of like ~12 old HDD's i don't use anymore

#

i just cloned the old data to new drives or installed a new OS on a new drive and left them there

solid pollen
#

Can you encrypt image too? I have one of the worst security ever on my old windows, and I want to burry that away

gentle moss
#

i think i have a win 98SE drive somewhere

#

clonezilla should let you encrypt an image, iirc

#

i'm pretty sure you could use a clonezilla boot CD and then clone the nvme to an image file and store it on one of your larger drives

#

you should then be able to mount it under linux

#

and as it's a full image if you ever wanted to restore it you could use clonezilla to do that

solid pollen
#

There is no windows clonezilla?

gentle moss
#

no. you can't run it while using the drives

#

hence, it's a boot cd

solid pollen
#

ah okay

#

I have a bootable usb stick running ubuntu

gentle moss
#

and you can only mount it in linux because i believe it stores stuff as an ext3/4 partition

solid pollen
#

Okay, I'll create an image tomorrow

gentle moss
#

read up on clonezilla, maybe it's a thing you want

#

but definitely read stuff and don't just take my word for it

#

this is your data, after all

#

:P

solid pollen
#

Yeah sure

terse sluice
gentle moss
#

oof, nasty

#

does turning it off and on remove it or dim it?

summer vector
#

whats going on there?

This utter crap is being distributed through schools from the 'local authority' so presume @WalsallCouncil today. The level of disinformation is staggering. I'd be proud to find my kids learning to use any of these. Except Discord but that's nothing to do with hacking.

tl;dr: apple is suing an ex-engineer who left to start a server chip company

gentle moss

Or at least providing options other than "cluster a bunch of Mac minis"

#

uh, they just have like an add on to install on your regular osx for your regular mac?

#

i guess on a macpro would be the best fit, but indeed, not what i though.

gentle moss
#

they used to actually make server hardware

frosty berry
#

ah, pro is available on rack mount

gentle moss
#

as you say, the closest you can get is the pro

frosty berry
#

the specs are quite something

#

didn't see the price yet, i expect it to be awesome as well πŸ˜„

gentle moss
#

i didn't realise they were offering the pro in rackmount

#

there are some uhh... "problems" with the pro pricing

frosty berry
gentle moss
#

they charge like 3x as much for the memory than it's worth

frosty berry
#

ah, i guess that's why they start that part with "forget everything you know about memory"

gentle moss
#

something like 64GB from Apple will set you back $1k

#

where as you can get the same specs from trusted manufacturers for about $300

frosty berry
#

not really surprised yeah, they are used to that nice premium, not going to let it go on high end hardware, forget the fact that the other ones are in a cutthroat market of small margins.

gentle moss
#

scamming consumers is one thing, but it's cheeky to do it to professional industries

#

mmmmm.

#

a rack mounted server with 2 sata ports

#

ahhh, main storage is done through a module

vestal briar
#

They'll be removing the sata ports and will just be having a single lightning port soon

gentle moss
#

that'd be a harder proposal to pull off i think

vapid bluff
#

how do you get power to a drive connected to that

gentle moss
#

probably the connector to the right

#

and a proprietary cable adapter

#

i mean at least they didn't reshape the damn SATA port so you needed a custom cable for that too

vestal briar
#

That looks like a apple-ized version of standard motherboard 4x2 one

#

Probably just randomized the pins and put a different connector hook on it

gentle moss
#

it's not a 4x2

#

as that'd be the 12v rail

#

also there are 10 pins Β¬_Β¬

#

i believe sata power has all 3 rails into it?

vestal briar
#

Wow i'm blind

gentle moss

so perhaps that's uhh. 2 of each rail with grounds

vestal briar
#

Seeing it's 10 though

gentle moss

i mean it's a little weird if it does provide sata power

#

since the sata spec is like 3xEach rail + matching grounds

hmm, no. only 6 grounds.

By default, a Windows 8/8.1 shutdown is not a real shutdown. Instead, it is hybrid shutdown where contents of memory are saved to disk. This allows for a faster startup. However, turning on the PC after a hybrid shutdown does not allow for pressing F1 or F12 during startup.
Whaaaat?

#

Does it also applies to Win10?

gentle moss
#

yes

#

it's actually a problem for us in terms of computer patching etc

if you have UEFI, you can turn it off in the UEFI settings

if not, you have to do it from windows

you can also turn it off in Win10's settings

sand goblet

undone berry
#

I don't even know what the difference is -some virtualisation thing right?

sand goblet
#

HyperV and group policy, mostly

gentle moss
#

mem / core count support

#

and yeah, general virtualisation features.

undone berry
#

All i know is that Docker Desktop won't work on Windows for me

gentle moss
#

not just hyperv

sand goblet
#

Docker works for me

gentle moss
#

speaking of core count

#

you hear the thing about Win10 Pro and AMD's threadripper?

sand goblet
#

more cores than windows can count?

undone berry
#

Tells me I need to enable a virtualisation setting in the BIOS, that setting isn't anywhere in the BIOS, and then it just works fine for me on Ubutntu; so I gave up trying to fix windows and just used Ubuntu

gentle moss
#

win 10 pro is supposed to support up to 128 threads

sand goblet
#

yeah, hyper-v requires cpu virtualisation features to be enabled

gentle moss
#

however when presented with threadrippers 128 threads it splits it into two thread pools of 64

#

basically handling it like two 64 thread CPUs

frosty berry
#

you can use win 10 for free by just never activating it, the things it disable after like a month of doing so are not important at all, that's nice-ish.

#

the amount of adware you have to cleanup after installation is the worst thing though. it's just full of "demo" apps.

#

and shitty games.

gentle moss
#

shortcuts to the stores

#

unpinning that stuff is a bitch

sand goblet
#

it takes like

#

two minutes

frosty berry
#

yeah, that's the worst two minutes, then you are good

undone berry
#

Trying to clear all the bloatware off a cheap laptop is insane. You have to get everything the manufacturer wants you to use off, all the ads the manufacturer put on there off, and then all the windows ads off

sand goblet
#

and then you never have to worry about it again

gentle moss
#

idk if you've seen the fresh install from a Dell workstation

frosty berry
#

there are powershell scripts to do it for you though

gentle moss
#

it's a bit more than 2 minutes

sand goblet
#

On a new machine - especially a laptop - the first thing I usually do is a clean reinstall

#

also I have a Dell XPS

undone berry
#

You don't always get a key with a laptop which makes reinstalling awkward

modern island

Ah btw

@light coyote a warning is just a note that we warned you for behaviour in the server

light coyote
#

How many do I need before I am game ended?

bleak lintel
#

that's not how we do things, infractions are on a case by case basis

light coyote
#

?

#

What do you mean by that?

bleak lintel
#

we don't go 5 warns and you're out

#

it's just that whenever we next see unsatisfactory behaviour we look up all the violations a user has committed in prior and decide on a course of action

light coyote
#

Oh

#

So basically, don't change my name again?

bleak lintel
#

Your warning was not for the name.

#

It was for behaviour in the help channels

light coyote
#

Ohhhh

bleak lintel
#

As long as you don't engage in inflammatory behaviour which violates our rules you will be fine
