like say you wanted to get to a higher level of technical support rather than the 1st line
so you call sales
Sure
and make up some bullshit about getting cut off from talking to Dave in Networking
or whatever
What's your point
manipulating people isn't that hard
i don't suppose most call centre workers are trained to deal with social engineering
Well legally they need to check ID, so it's already a lot better than whatever system the US has
so i guess you give them the number on your ID or passport?
here's the guidelines for one carrier https://www.optus.com.au/for-you/support/answer?id=9438
Get your support answers here. Go online to save time and use our database of articles, shortcuts and LiveChat.
Not sure how it works over the phone, but I've heard some people have to come in person
that's for registering a new service though
Same for replacement
Nah that's not enough
They really tightened security recently
I guess the web portal would be the weakest link lol
i dunno
Because it's just phone number and password
you've called their support line?
I had to do it for my parent once I think
yet you, clearly not your parent, managed to get something done?
Nah they had to come and do it in the store lol
I was surprised myself
I remember you could just sim swap via chat not so long ago
that's a good policy if it's that solid
exception to the rule
in my work in IT i've managed to get 2FA resets for accounts that don't even match the domain of my email address
when i have the username / password
rofl
"i'm emailing on behalf of our client blah blah blah, we supply your service to them. they've lost their device and need you to reset the 2FA code."
yeah it's surprisingly easy
I do a bit of light manipulation when I have to call someone's ISP so they don't make me go through all of the menial crap
authorize, and then "I was talking to the engineer department and got disconnected.."
sales people are the best though
usually they've got targets to hit etc so will just ping you over where you want to go
reminds me, once called a govt office and their system auto disconnected at exactly an hour
had to go through another hour of waiting
haha, i've had that in the UK
sit there waiting for them to answer the fucking phone "you are X in the line, please hold"
then dropped
made sure to tell them to call me back at x number if it disconnects again
At least it tells you your position
another thing you might find amusing about the phone system in the US specifically
when you make a phone call, your service provider knows what state (and usually what city) you're calling from, regardless of device or number
it used to be the case that any business could sign up for a service that took a number and told them where the call was coming from
it was intended so that like, you could call one number, and then it'd route you to the local office for whatever company you're calling, etc
ofc it got heavily abused by spammers though, so it's no longer a thing you can get
Wasn't there a big story about that recently? Selling people's location or whatever
That was something else, yeah
Ah lol
and yeah, all of these SMS exploits
one of those was even quite recent wasn't it
yep, that's right
I also saw that talk
everything is computers now
sim cards run java
Interesting
literally everywhere.
Guess people really love their Java applets
The JVM is pretty great, to be fair
Don't care about the article, I just loved the cover photo 😁
Was hoping for "Bear Metal"
its looks so mesmerising
Looks like duct tape
That was my first thought
Then I got sad that they had the band wrapping it up in the center so it ruins that smoothness
Does anyone have a good time with the datetime python lib or it's just me having seizure everytime i have to use it
i always have to refer to docs when i use it
Classic blunder of asking for legal advice on the internet, but in a situation where you operate a mailing list, and people just enter an email into a form that adds them to that list, does COPPA still apply to those emails?
That's definitely one for a lawyer
I like to think I know COPPA but I have no clue for this one
Under the outlined definitions in COPPA, it's "collecting" "personal information", but it really doesn't feel like it should be a COPPA-ified thing
i'll check it next time @plucky ridge
@fallen sparrow Sorry about going AFK earlier, had some things I had to attend to. But Come to think of it if you want to do a sim swap on me you'd have to guess the fake birthday I put in too lol is completely incorrect. An attacker wouldn't need your birthday to SIM swap.
Because if it's a fake birthday, an attacker can play stupid and go "Huh, I could have sworn I put in my real birthday. What's it set to?" and customer service would tell them. It's a fairly basic attack, and if you come across like you are the account holder, the person on the other end of the line will give you a lot of information they shouldn't.
Voicemail backdoor numbers are a thing as well
So someone can get into your voicemail ( because using Trello to brute force your voicemail PIN is trivial ) and get information you've got saved in there as well. 😄
This is why an in-depth threat assessment is vital to really know what your weak points are, and what you can do to prevent the issue completely or at least make it hard enough so that no one would bother. Like in regards to voicemail brute forcing, just disable your voicemail! Added benefit of no robocall voicemails too 😄
That message reminded me of this. I rang the utility company to pay a bill, and because my email wasn't on the account all I could do was pay the amount I thought the bill was into that account. Next time I rang the utility company, the only security they required was the card no of the previous payment.
Me next?
@rough sapphire The reason I say that is because I've been in that exact situation before. I didn't feel like giving my real birthday and put in a random one. Tried to port and it got rejected even though I was contacting them from my account on their website. I even gave them a driver's license pic but they wouldn't accept it because DOB doesn't match. Is it a perfect system, probably not. But it's not as easy as how you mention it, at least in my country. Good thing is the government is apparently tightening up on mobile number fraud and they're making some sort of 2FA confirmation necessary for porting (don't know the details, hasn't been rolled out to many carriers yet I think). As for voicemail, well I don't really use it 😄
Guess I should mention that I ended up having to make a new account and get a new number, so now I make sure to note down the DOB lol. Even if the 2FA legislation rolls out it won't be perfect but it'll at least weed out the average clueless scammer, which I'll take over nothing. As for fancier attacks like fake base stations and all that, well I can't do much. Services like govt websites still only offer SMS 2FA and probably will do for a while. And I guess sure someone could waste my time with such an attack but in the end I can still do e.g. report fradulent transactions to my bank. I don't deal with things like crypto where something can disappear without recourse and I certainly wouldn't use SMS if I were to do that.
Who is this cat? ->
Does it belong to someone on this server, or it is a popular cat, or just a random internet cat?
Oh yeah found it thanks!
np.. I'll send you the bill
HOW TO HACK ALEXXXAAA MENN????
Hemm what?
what?
you use an axe
How can someone this thick earth £80k/y
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-50514656
super common
i mean MP's earn that much and they don't understand marginal tax rates
I guess. But this guy diesnt seem to understand the fucking basic and obvious statement of "5% of people earn over £80,000 per year"
ah
yeah
the average is still like £26k isn't it/
£29k apparently
which is obviously thrown off by people like him
average isn't really a useful figure
oh fuck me i just watched it
"every doctor earns more than that, every solicitor earns more than that"
wow
that level of ignorance is insane
Rationalization is one hell of a drug
NHS says that the basic starting salary for a junior doctor in their first Foundation year is £26,614, rising to £30,805 in the second year. A junior doctor starting specialist training (after a two-year Foundation Programme) has a basic starting salary of £36,461, rising to £46,208.
maybe they could fix his brain
reminds me of when Al Murray, the comedian, ran for parliament as the "FUKP" party
"If anyone goes into A&E and it's neither an accident or an emergency they'll be sent to a random department to be practiced on."
fuck i don't think i'll hit 80k in my whole life
How can someone so well off be so arrogantly deluded
i'll be lucky if i hit 45k
and i'm a "skilled worker"
¬_¬
i mean fuck, i built a network for a business park that generates millions a year
still get paid piss
at least compared to that twat
I've already got an offer for when I graduate with solid salary, I checked out tax rates on it, and id be perfectly happy to pay more
wonder what he does
A lot more
i don't mind paying tax
tbh when i was doing 5 days a week i was super comfortable
at least compared to the rest of my life
i think that was 24k
i can't imagine what having 80k feels like
i probably wouldn't have a 2001 Honda Accord
or i would but the 3L version
Whatever this scumbag earns, its too much. More than fucking mps
idk about scumbag
but i would say fucking idiot
maybe he doesn't get what being poor is like
Sure I guess. But mps should be the highest paid morons in the country
haha
we have uhhh
a client
he runs a business that generates a lot of money
he's rich as fuck
I don't think he can have any conception of what its like to genuinely worry about the important things. Whether you can afford food, clothes, heating, a house
but he still thinks not getting a mobile phone signal is our fault
because we advised him what phone to buy
my car is fucking falling apart, i couldn't repair some shit earlier in the year because i was broke and now it's got worse
so the cost of repair has gone up
being broke can suck a fuck
Sam Vimes boot theory of economics
you know whats a really really terrible ui design decision?
groups of buttons that update when you open them
e.g. the windows settings page takes like half a second to update after you open it
sometimes like 3-4 seconds
anyway, afterwards there might be one or more buttons added to/removed from the group
due to this, the button you were about to press has moved somewhere else in the group and you end up clicking on another one by accident
pycharm does this too sometimes with the buttons in the top right if you have context dependent actions
i added a button for 'run file in python console' next to the ordinary run button and sometimes after stopping a project it takes a second for it to show up. when it does it displaces the ordinary run button and i end up clicking the 'run in console button' by accident.
it's like as a principle of good design, there should be something analogous to threadsafety but for UX. i.e. you have to keep the current interface (or part thereof) consistent for the duration of a user's attention to it.
dont just shift things willy nilly under their nose right as their about to click it
[/rant]
Discord android do the same when you open a user info tab, the friend request button appear after one second in the middle of the screen
Like the emotes tab in discord @vapid bluff
lmao
you cant click the emotes in the bottom
@gentle moss I know you don't like Jeremy Corbyn - but I think this manifesto is a pretty huge shift towards the left compared to anything in recent years. The only thing its missing is sensible drug policy. https://old.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/dzsgzq/labours_manifesto_in_60_seconds/
yeah, it's not too bad
the fact he's willing to try to get a deal and then hold a people's vote is a good step too
decade of austerity has sucked dick
Extremely so - and the LDs don't seem to want to do much to fix it. So the only worthwhile votes in England are for Labour or the Greens
Also - Tony Blair/Gordon Brown was a bit wank as well
Lib Dems have actually said they want to run a surplus
which is insane
and to be fair Blair / Brown wasn't that bad
the financial crash fucked that happy streak up
Lib Dems at this point are becoming just another right wing party who are a bit less overtly crazy
i mean a country isn't a fucking bank account
Conservatives are becoming Republicans, Lib Dems are becoming neoliberal Democrats, Labour are actually left wing
running surplus isn't neccessarily a good thing for your citizens or your economy
also nice zinger
Neoliberal Dems
Yeah - exactly, parties try and market the economy as if its identical to an individuals bank account, even though its so obviously not
then morons eat that idea up and run with it
even when it goes against every piece of economic wisdom
i think some of the politicians genuinely believe it
I think they believe in the ideology behind it, whilst accepting it isn't "good" for the economy
fuck the civil service advice that for every £1 in tackling tax evasion / avoidance £10 is brought back
slash the HMRC's funding
I think Rees Mogg (as an example) believes the government shouldn't spend any money, and doesn't care about the impact on the economy
to save money
but we'll spend more on tackling benefit fraud!
which has no return
or is actively a money sink
not saying don't investigate fraud but holy shit check your return on investment
Conservatives pay Google to promote labourmanifesto.co.uk website in search results
uuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Its literally 100% spin from the tories with 2 idelogical goals: reduce spending on public services, get as far away from anything that looks like regulations such as the EU
Yeah, exactly. They're currently less vocally bonkers, but they're working their way towards it
this disinformation campaign seems like classic dom
They are in the process of cutting out a lot of it.
sadly my 18th birthday is 6 days after the general election
Oh - thats the other thing missing from the Labour Manifesto - the ditching of FPTP
I mean, if the LDs were less shit, they could have manoeuvred into a coalition with Labour where they could force it through
But the supply teacher that is Jo Swinson didn't like the sound of that
so instead she went with attacking Corbyn/Labour
id say labour is unlikely to scrap fptp on their own
corbyn would be a bad pm purely because of his lack of popularity
a few people like him
think people like bojo?
he's been told to fuck off by pretty much every town he's visited
He's only unpopular due to biased press - he's also gaining popularity
everyone else hates him
and was relatively popular during the 17 GE
study by a university found that 70% of all press stories about corbyn are negative or misrepresent his position
The A/S thing has been vastly blown out of proportion for example
wonder why billionaires who own newspapers don't want to elect someone who's going to raise taxes on them?
point?
im mostly saying uk politics wouldnt be stable with corbyn in charge
you reckon if labour get a majority and he's PM
as opposed to?
its not excaactly stable now tho
that there'll be chaos?!
His popularity is perfectly in line with other Labour figures
and again
negative press
yup
and Tories are more likely to be extremely partisan
its just a mess
Tories will approve of any pro-brexit PM
he's an anti-semite for criticising Israel, like everyone gets branded
regardless of level of cuntery
the system needs reform
he's a terrorist sympathiser for wanting to have terrorists face the justice system
imma have to brb
and for trying to get the IRA around a table to solve the fucking troubles
Literally the only other Labour figure who'd make a decent PM is John Mcdonnel
But does ol' McDonnel have a farm?
TORY PROPAGANDA
He doesn't - but he has got a lovely Northern accent
ANIMAL FARM COMMUNISM REFERENCE
E I E I O
it's been done before iirc
y i like
Not rougher...
Honestly, I've never seen anything with McDonnell where he doesn't come across like a decent human being
Cockneyish?
Me speaking in my own accent of Geordie and trying to teach you Geordie words and phrases to use. This isn't someone 'doing' a Geordie accent, this is a prop...
Yes, that's my only frame of reference
that's what a northern accent sounds like
I'll get right on that as soon as I figure out what the hell you said
GOD I love tea
One bag of black, one bag of green, steep until.... well okay, never take the bags out
What kind?
I assume no milk?
Correct
Good - I've seen people do milk+green tea and I don't think theres much more horrifying than that
oof
But, standard breakfast tea with milk/sugar is the best
Yeah that's not bad
builders' brew
I just really like the tea taste
Cheers is fine - but hearing Muricans say "mate" just sounds so wrong to me
Yeah that doesn't work
it sounds like they're about to fuck you
I've only added words that still sound good
Or it sounds really patronising
Warm tea = weird. Ice+sugar+tea = correct. 😁
I cannot do sweet tea
fucking get out
I see Ice tea as completely different to normal tea. I don't mind it, but its not the best
Iced, slightly-sweetened, green tea is good
to be fair i went through a phase of making a tea no-milk two sugars in a pint glass
Primary reason I drink it?
and drinking that hot / cold
Much easier to get refills at restaurants
I don't mind no-milk tea, but in the UK you just look like an absolute monster with no milk
None of the waiters want to deal with carrying that little container of hot water
Warm tea when it's 100°F out....is no fun. It's why we Southerners prefer it iced.
True
Even when it was 38c here I was drinking hot tea
its still a net negative to body temperature
Like drinking hot stuff when it's hot out makes your body cooler?
Evaporative cooling is a powerful thing
38c and 80% humidity
Because it's not trying to raise your core temp back up?
I might be 100% wrong
Look - I glanced through a Buzzfeed article that seemed to agree with me - I can't have gotten the science wrong
I feel like I heard this years ago
Although it might be about spicy foods and heat
I may have just transferred that to hot drinks
Evaporative cooling is awesome, yes. But at 80%+ relative humidity, evaporation doesn't occur. womp womp.
The meta-sounding film, titled Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is undergoing final negotiations to be picked up by Lionsgate
THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT
hahahaha
Yeah. Awesome meta film idea.
that's going to be amazing
i wonder how over the top he will play himself
he'll try and get in the zone
method act that shit
I hope John Travolta somehow gets involved
And will he take his face off?
ohmygod
Kinky
Nope
oh no
the church scene
Also - I just learned - the film makes even less sense because Cage is 5cm shorter than Travolta
Dude, it was a movie in the 90's
It didn't have to make sense
It just had to be action packed
I miss that being the standard
There's something satisfying about being able to throw reality out the window and just have fun
i really can't decide what my favourite cage moment is from any movie
it might be the wickerman where he's riding a bike
and crashes into a beehive
then starts running from the bees
"He's SCRATCHING at the DOOR!"
Funnily enough
I currently have that Wickerman film downloaded and need to watch it
The bee cage head thing was only in the Director's cut
it's fucking hilarious
Not the original theatrical release
yeah
Goddamn it - now I need to totally legally download it again
I forgot he was in that
I just remember Connery
Con Air is probably one of my Cage faves
"Put the bunny back in the box."
Con Air is genuinely fantastic
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
god damn it give us an embed
nou
it's so fucking telegraphed what's about to happen
Back in a bit, need to test something for work
Con Air is pretty good, yeah
In the film, Cage apparently talks to an egotistical Nineties version of himself, who mocks his future self for not being famous, as well as for making too many low-budget films.
hahaha
okay, that movie HAS to get made
I can't imagine it not getting made - it doesn't even sound expensive
just some CGI to have Cage playing off against himself
fuck it, don't even make him look younger
just have him pretend one is younger
two nic cages arguing with each other
At some point - without commenting on it - they should sub out Cage for Travotla
maybe with a really shitty cage mask on
oh my god
DVD commentary
Cage talking about a movie about Cage where two Cage's play off against each other
damn, could've said face off
fuck
I remember Shia Lebouef did the thing where he watched all of his movies - I feel like Nick Cage should do that too, with his pet octopus
:D
i think the most recent thing i heard about cage was that his cat ate a bunch of his magic mushrooms
so he took the mushrooms too and spent the trip with the cat
Bad tripsitter smh
Every time I'm reminded about something Cage has done/did, it just makes me love him
yeah, i do enjoy his movies
the Gone in 60 Seconds remake was okay
way better than the original
that thing was janky as all hell
but i guess it was the 70's
I didn't even know it wasn't an original
But, I can't ever remember watching a Cage film and not enjoying it
yeah
wtf politicians
stop doing dumb shit
Okay so, I'm sure to anyone this wouldn't be a huge deal
reported in the guardian as "The Washington Post just posted this TikTok showing Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker assaulting a man in an airport"
But god I'm so amazed by how small external hard drives are now
i was like "wtf, Booker assaulted someone?!"
hah
Does anyone even remember that guy?
He was a wrestler in the ...... mid 00's I think it was
So we got 6 new little external hard drives for our audit department
1TB $50 a pop
Just blows my mind how cheap they are anymore
Well sure but it's not like you're going to be gaming from the thing
Not needing to load tons of textures at a time
true
And on top of that, due to USB 3.0 allowing power over the port, you only need the one cable
Which yeah, that's been a thing for a while
remember when everything flooded in i want to say thailand and costs of spinners skyrocketed?
Oh yeah I remember that
backblaze and the likes were buying up externals super cheap and ripping the drives out
faaaar cheaper than ordering internals at the time
Walmart started limiting stock to like 2 per person too
Sounds right
Right?
what's wrong with RAID?
Okay, question on preferences
Not as efficient or effective as it could be on lower drive counts
Looooots of extra writes that burn down drive life
what would you do with two 4TB's?
Eat them
No I'd likely have them on different devices
I already have one on my PS4 for example
i need to upgrade the drive in our PS4
still the original drive from launch
Seriously
yerp
No I'm saying an external is really the only upgrade you need
You say that buuuuuut
You can't replace the internal one with it?
Implying you don't have a special edition.
Honestly most of them are so small you can hide it behind the system
And yeah, fair point, Scott
I replaced the internal on the PS3 with a new one, I forget the size.
I imagine you can do the same with the 4
Bananas were once inedible?
On the old PS4 models, apparently the internal harddrive is routed through USB as well
Ew
Well it's Sony. I'm not exactly surprised.
So getting an external could be just as good if not better
Dude, that statement could be used on anything
"Well it's [blank]. I'm not exactly surprised."
Sony specifically. get_random(4)
PS3 has been the only serious console flop they've had in their history
Lolwut
PS2 is still the best selling console ever
In all honesty, the playstation division is good
PSVita
It only had Grand Theft Auto 5 release on it.
the janky Wii rip off
Vita wasn't a wii ripoff
That's a handheld
@undone berry Vita/PSP were both jokes, honestly.
no, they're two separate things
Seperate to the main console line
Oh right right
they also had a wii ripoff
Vita holds a special place in my heart, even though I bought it near the end of its life
Has some of the best versions of certain games
Persona 4 Golden for example
I have never had one
Yeah, I heard it was actually good, but no one bought them
It was a powerful little machine
It exploded in Japan
but in the west yeah, it bombed
Samsung batteries?
Well played
Also, never having a console flop is a pretty shitty metric
when theres like 3 companies that make them
2 of which have only made 3/4
Yeah, the 2 also was re-released for the slimline version, half way into it's lifespan.
1 -> 2 was a bigger jump than 2 -> 4, considering everything.
The coolest thing about ps3s in my opinion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_cluster
@vestal briar The lack of OtherOS?
[17:09] Philip DeFranco: Implying you don't have a special edition.
i have a killzone pre-order edition
looked up the serial
internal hdd was made in 2012
@gentle moss Then yeah, that external would look like trash
plus the PS4 has an easily upgradable HDD
What
just a slide off cover
Yeah, that too
PS4 > Xbox
it's not a special edition, it's just a different model number, for some reason
@vestal briar Both are trash, admittedly.
But I don't care about consoles
This is coming from someone who has a PS4
PS3 clusters were a real problem for Sony
Like comparing a shitty apple to a slightly less shitty apple
since they were selling the PS3 at a loss
expecting to make money back on Bluray and Games
Huh, didn't know that
for market dominance
Gone down the printer route™️
They shot themselves heavily in the foot with the architecture
I'm still waiting on optical media to go away. Discs are from a bygone era.
Yeah - Discs need to die
I like discs
fucking worst
They're a great format for long term storage
They're just fun
I don't own a device with a disc drive
i don't even install disc drives in my PC
Not practical but fun
I totally read something else than discs
i stopped doing that in like
@plucky ridge No, that'd be tapes.
Maybe, but they're defunct for end users
I have not had a disk drive for 3 years
Wouldn't a tape degrade faster than a disk due to the magnetism slowly going away?
no
@gentle moss You don't have a large swath of data to be backed up, then.
I thought that was the issue with old VHS tapes
Tapes are better suited to long term
@plucky ridge Totally different
IBM has a big storage farm
if i wanted to store Terabytes of data i'd use AWS Glacier
All tape-based
Gotcha gotcha
tapes last 30 years
I'm happy to be proven wrong, I just didn't realize
@gentle moss That's more sunk cost if anything 😄
I could swear that there was someone looking into optical storage again..
it's only expensive if you take it out
I feel like it was Microsoft
Apparently cassets are making a comeback?
wot
no they're not
DVDs last 50 years vs 30 years for tapes
if you say lofi i'll fucking murder you
Hm
Blu Rays do 150
Yeah that was my understanding Piers
so its not really that close for truly long term
@undone berry Except, you don't see businesses using DVDs for backups, lol..
Maybe economics?
Yeah, but IT long term is a bit different to actual long term
Okay well the concept wasn't asking about which is more business smart
I was talking about actual longevity
I thought the chemicals degraded inside of them
Very little in IT considers more than decades
Making reading unclear
What in discs, Owez?
even financial firms only have to store like 7 years iirc
Working for one, I can confirm
True @gentle moss
just get a massive stacker tower with loads of 5 3/4" bays
If kept in a climate controlled setting, the dvd would last longer than the tape
crank out like 12 blurays at a time
yes
DVDs are a lot easier to sanitize too.
BURN IT
Throw 'em in a microwave, problem solved.
And they make great coasters
to be fair you can just set fire to hard drives
If you want your grand kids to be able to access your wedding photos - then bluray/cloud-backups is the way to go
Oh, I thought dvds had some thin adhesive
demagnetise it
Evidently not
Nope
That makes sense then
Literally plastic/metal/plastic
@gentle moss Unless it's thermite, you're not sanitizing a HDD/SDD
The only way to sanitise a HDD is drilling it
So unless it scratches or gets heated, they'll just exist
pretty sure the DoD says chucking it in a furnace is fair
Wonder how long vinyls hold up in accurate representation
and no piers
@undone berry Actually, no
HDD is considerably easier to sanitize
Would be hard to test due to being analouge and all
Thats what I was told by the person at a big financial corp
SDD on the other hand, yeah no
@vestal briar Quite well so long as they're kept in a climate controlled enviornment
How do you sanitise a HDD?
HDD you just throw in a furnace or shred to 3x3x3mm bits
HDD you can overwrite
If you have them in a hot garage or attic for too long they might start to warp
SSD has wear-leveling
SSD is thermite
a furnace
HDD is overwriting a few times
What's funny is that the DoD first wipes HDD's and THEN burns them
I don't know why that amuses me so much
Rather be safe than sorry
furnace or tiny tiny cubes
was funny when GCHQ wanted to wipe the guardians laptops over the snowden stuff
took an angle grinder to every chip
@gentle moss That was interesting, actually
No idea, didn't make sense to me
Get a bunch of hard drive plates and throw them in the sea. Then claim you have made an artifical reef out of shredded metal filings
Except that the plates also have coatings that could leech into the water
That wont end up like France's tyre artificial reef
@plucky ridge I think there were valid chips they wanted to get removed, but I think rather than saying that, they just said "Do all of them"
..For endangered fish that can survive the poison?
Water doesn't stay in one place
Which would make sense. Falls in line with the "Never confirm or deny" mentality.
Sure
I had a thought but now oh no wait
I remember
When I was destroying some hard drives we had at work I salvaged a few of the magnets from a couple of the drives
They make a great used staple collector
Ha, I used to have one of those
Got paranoid about leaving any electronics around it though, because that would be a stupid move.
So I eventually got rid of it
There are honestly so few things that would get wrecked by a magnet on it anymore
No where near as much as it used to be
Nothing here
LCD and LED monitors won't, your computer's hard drive will, sure, but your phone won't
My phone 100% would
Modern ones take a bit to break now
Is your phone actually a large tower with a spinning disk?
You're gonna need a bigger boat magnet
I mean it could fuck your credit cards, sure
But in general, things aren't nearly as magnet sensitive as they once were
I've fucked up train tickets by putting them next to my phone multiple times - its not that hard to fuck up magnetic strips
For sure
Hmm, just launch it into a 7 Tesla MRI scanner.
Yeah, I messed up my public services card by doing that
that was only a couple years ago, too
It'll smash it pretty nicely
PSC is just magstripe I think
Not overly sure actually, now that I think
(by pure mechanical force)
3/4 times I've had to hop train barrier things because of that - and once I fell on my arse
Wouldn't the station attendants tackle you for that?
Yeah, but in shitty smaller stations there aren't any
Just the one surly janitor that's seen too much
"Just check my tag, it's legit just broken"
They're normally fine with that yeah
Yeah I could see that, actually
You know what I miss?
Degaussing CRT computer monitors
It was such a satisfying sound
I wiped a 12GB HDD some 90+ times 15~ years ago before smashing it and the CRT monitor to bits
I knew at the time 90 was useless, but it wasn't being used for anything
So it was more "How long can I run DBAN before I get bored of it?"
Had a nice sized sledgehammer at the time
That was nice
I keep coming across people that have accessibility issues with Discord
it sucks that client mods are against the ToS when they solve these problems
I guess that's how it has to be, but
What kind of accessibility issues?
Well as an example, some people are in medium/large servers of groups of people they know IRL
most people don't use their real names on Discord
someone I was talking to asked me if I knew of anything that would allow them to apply a tag, client-side, next to people's usernames in chat, so they could have their real names there and avoid being confused all the time
it turns out that a plugin for BD used to exist, last update was just over a year ago unfortunately, but it's interesting to see what people have come up with
it's one of the first times I've seen a client mod solve a real problem for real people, rather than just provide a nice-to-have enhancement
I guess you can just add note on people
You can even do that on mobile
Wonder who use this feature
That's useless though
you have to click on everyone to see the note
it's not just shown in chat
Hmm yeah
this is the (very low res) example provided on the page I was looking at
just like the bot tag
[17:28] Mr. Hemlock: Why the keyboard
[17:28] Mr. Hemlock: What did it ever do to them
[17:28] Philip DeFranco: No idea, didn't make sense to me
they destroyed anything that could store anything
all firmware chips etc
on the other hand there's just stuff that sounds really nice to have
like a spotify player at the bottom of the channel list or unread counter on channels
but there are real problems that can be solved I think
KNGGGGgggggg...... bnk
and the wobble
I loved that
That would be neat screensaver, actually
If anyone actually still used those
it'd be fun as a little program
just sits in your sys tray
"better degauss"
hah, there's a "prank degausser" app on play store
oh my lord american red wine is fruity
ikr
i think i have like uhhh
5 by now?
idk
@plucky ridge
how many OT names do i have?
<_<
bisks-disk-shop
alexa-next
bisks-flamethrower
uhhhhh
i think there are more
there better be a pepsi one
Yeah, true
• gdude’s-perpetual-sobriety
I think that's the only on that references you as your screen name
The rest play off of g
what about "g-"
No, she was before you joined
That's a weird one
Too wordy
Yeah, that too
And that's all that matters
Gnarnia
Man that movie was dumb, but some of it was clever
(epic movie)
It was a combined parody of all the popular movies at the time
But it was very much a teen movie
Gnarnia still makes me laugh though
"Welcome to.. Gnarnia"
"Huh. Silent G."
"For legal purposes...'
Haha
Sit back down
i did
i only stood for him
i mean i sat down again ofc
what goes up must come down am i right?
gf agrees
no, you can't punged me
I question whether that's a word
No more happy goofballs between the actual filter triggers.
Fair enough
ping, pong, pung. they're all different
I'm a prescriptivist, not a descriptivist. Language is how I say it should be.
i'm going to ping, i have pung, i got pong
ping pung*
funnily enough you ping pung is peng
@undone berry knows what i'm on about
or should
a peng is a chinese mythological bird
well dench
peng is just, like, "good"
pench
my interpretation: most people like toast thats toasted just right with coffee thats pastel brown tending towards dark
and i stand by this conclusion
3 is so good
I usually go 3 or 4 personally
i do a 4B
f looks like chicken soup
I'm a 3D or 3E
gotta compensate for that missing bitterness
4/5 are acceptable. Any other choice seems completely alien to me
i could see myself venturing into 4 territory but 5 is burn city and 6 is a crater
6 is a crater
very slightly less than 5, like a much more even 4, would be ideal white toast
also - thats tea not coffee
:o
you're crazy
the darkest tea is too dark
but besides that, its descending order of appeal
@gentle moss my grandparents do the 6
maybe they just wanted an early taste of death
haha
oh wait - I misreemembered the chart. The darkest 4 teas look right, the lightest two look a bit alien
I take back that statement
I'll take a 3D or 2D
3 very preferable
4 if the breads out of date
i like a proper crunch to my toast
so i go 4
and a strong tea is waaaaay better than some milky shit
I'm in the middle with my tea
Yeah they clearly say it on their README
Does Google have too much money?
They probably do
Naturally
I mean, why they do that? To earn popularity?
They do? That's nice
I mean, it's to keep you as long as possible
12 hour workdays but you get free lunch™️
20% time is the thing - they get to spend one day a week on anything they like
and the work hours are meant to be reasonable
wow
alexa-next to cookin-wth-bisk
much relate
@undone berry
turns out that "not top 50%" guy is an IT Consultant
i guess that explains where the Government find them
sweet mother of god my flamethrower worked first time
all files, gone.
That's a great feeling
Coding something and it works at the first run
Especially if you're dealing with something as annoying as having to delete each file individually from a vault
indeed
4-5 hour job request
24 hour before inventory update
only 24 hours after a job is completed to get the output
time to make sure the upload part of this script saves a json file
Jesus Christ. I assumed he was like a welder or some esoteric trade position, but an it consultant shouldn't be even close to that stupid.
he also races motorbikes in his spare time
"not in the top 50%!"
he's apparently quite good on the club circuit
He should be laughed out of his job
can't even use google
what an IT consultant
also if you actually take into account people who don't earn enough to pay tax
he's in the top 3% of earners
I think part of his argument is that the richest people don't earn a salary, rather that they earn money passively via stocks or whatever. But that was a shit argument, put across its a shit way, and he'd obviously still be in the top 5%
