gentle moss
#

you ever done call centre hopping?

#

like say you wanted to get to a higher level of technical support rather than the 1st line

#

so you call sales

fallen sparrow
#

Sure

gentle moss
#

and make up some bullshit about getting cut off from talking to Dave in Networking

#

or whatever

fallen sparrow
#

What's your point

gentle moss
#

manipulating people isn't that hard

#

i don't suppose most call centre workers are trained to deal with social engineering

fallen sparrow
#

Well legally they need to check ID, so it's already a lot better than whatever system the US has

gentle moss
#

so i guess you give them the number on your ID or passport?

fallen sparrow
#

Not sure how it works over the phone, but I've heard some people have to come in person

gentle moss
#

that's for registering a new service though

fallen sparrow
#

Same for replacement

gentle moss
#

if i have your existing phone number, name, address and maybe even IMEI

#

hmm

fallen sparrow
#

Nah that's not enough

#

They really tightened security recently

#

I guess the web portal would be the weakest link lol

gentle moss
#

i dunno

fallen sparrow
#

Because it's just phone number and password

gentle moss
#

you've called their support line?

fallen sparrow
#

I had to do it for my parent once I think

gentle moss
#

yet you, clearly not your parent, managed to get something done?

fallen sparrow
#

Nah they had to come and do it in the store lol

#

I was surprised myself

#

I remember you could just sim swap via chat not so long ago

gentle moss
#

that's a good policy if it's that solid

#

exception to the rule

#

in my work in IT i've managed to get 2FA resets for accounts that don't even match the domain of my email address

#

when i have the username / password

#

rofl

fallen sparrow
#

lol

#

plenty of examples of that haha

gentle moss
#

"i'm emailing on behalf of our client blah blah blah, we supply your service to them. they've lost their device and need you to reset the 2FA code."

fallen sparrow
#

Seems legit ✅

sand goblet
#

yeah it's surprisingly easy

#

I do a bit of light manipulation when I have to call someone's ISP so they don't make me go through all of the menial crap

#

authorize, and then "I was talking to the engineer department and got disconnected.."

gentle moss
#

sales people are the best though

#

usually they've got targets to hit etc so will just ping you over where you want to go

fallen sparrow
#

reminds me, once called a govt office and their system auto disconnected at exactly an hour

#

had to go through another hour of waiting

gentle moss
#

haha, i've had that in the UK

#

sit there waiting for them to answer the fucking phone "you are X in the line, please hold"

#

then dropped

fallen sparrow
#

made sure to tell them to call me back at x number if it disconnects again

#

At least it tells you your position

sand goblet
#

another thing you might find amusing about the phone system in the US specifically

#

when you make a phone call, your service provider knows what state (and usually what city) you're calling from, regardless of device or number

#

it used to be the case that any business could sign up for a service that took a number and told them where the call was coming from

#

it was intended so that like, you could call one number, and then it'd route you to the local office for whatever company you're calling, etc

#

ofc it got heavily abused by spammers though, so it's no longer a thing you can get

fallen sparrow
#

Wasn't there a big story about that recently? Selling people's location or whatever

gentle moss
#

ah that's different

#

that's mobile providers being evil meta data bastards

sand goblet
#

That was something else, yeah

fallen sparrow
#

Ah lol

sand goblet
#

and yeah, all of these SMS exploits

gentle moss
#

your sim card is a computer

#

O_O

sand goblet
#

one of those was even quite recent wasn't it

#

yep, that's right

#

I also saw that talk

gentle moss
#

everything is computers now

sand goblet
#

sim cards run java

gentle moss
#

yeah lol

#

:D

fallen sparrow
#

IME also runs Java

#

Two places I wouldn't think it would appear

sand goblet
#

blu-ray drives also run java

#

since BD-DVDs contain java programs

fallen sparrow
#

Interesting

sand goblet
#

literally everywhere.

fallen sparrow
#

Guess people really love their Java applets

sand goblet
#

The JVM is pretty great, to be fair

It's a less stressful datetime

loud kestrel

Classic blunder of asking for legal advice on the internet, but in a situation where you operate a mailing list, and people just enter an email into a form that adds them to that list, does COPPA still apply to those emails?

sand goblet
#

That's definitely one for a lawyer

#

I like to think I know COPPA but I have no clue for this one

loud kestrel
#

Under the outlined definitions in COPPA, it's "collecting" "personal information", but it really doesn't feel like it should be a COPPA-ified thing

autumn herald

i'll check it next time @plucky ridge

#

@fallen sparrow Sorry about going AFK earlier, had some things I had to attend to. But Come to think of it if you want to do a sim swap on me you'd have to guess the fake birthday I put in too lol is completely incorrect. An attacker wouldn't need your birthday to SIM swap.

#

Because if it's a fake birthday, an attacker can play stupid and go "Huh, I could have sworn I put in my real birthday. What's it set to?" and customer service would tell them. It's a fairly basic attack, and if you come across like you are the account holder, the person on the other end of the line will give you a lot of information they shouldn't.

#

Voicemail backdoor numbers are a thing as well

#

So someone can get into your voicemail ( because using Trello to brute force your voicemail PIN is trivial ) and get information you've got saved in there as well. 😄

#

This is why an in-depth threat assessment is vital to really know what your weak points are, and what you can do to prevent the issue completely or at least make it hard enough so that no one would bother. Like in regards to voicemail brute forcing, just disable your voicemail! Added benefit of no robocall voicemails too 😄

undone berry
#

That message reminded me of this. I rang the utility company to pay a bill, and because my email wasn't on the account all I could do was pay the amount I thought the bill was into that account. Next time I rang the utility company, the only security they required was the card no of the previous payment.

rough sapphire
#

Me next?

fallen sparrow
#

@rough sapphire The reason I say that is because I've been in that exact situation before. I didn't feel like giving my real birthday and put in a random one. Tried to port and it got rejected even though I was contacting them from my account on their website. I even gave them a driver's license pic but they wouldn't accept it because DOB doesn't match. Is it a perfect system, probably not. But it's not as easy as how you mention it, at least in my country. Good thing is the government is apparently tightening up on mobile number fraud and they're making some sort of 2FA confirmation necessary for porting (don't know the details, hasn't been rolled out to many carriers yet I think). As for voicemail, well I don't really use it 😄

fallen sparrow
#

Guess I should mention that I ended up having to make a new account and get a new number, so now I make sure to note down the DOB lol. Even if the 2FA legislation rolls out it won't be perfect but it'll at least weed out the average clueless scammer, which I'll take over nothing. As for fancier attacks like fake base stations and all that, well I can't do much. Services like govt websites still only offer SMS 2FA and probably will do for a while. And I guess sure someone could waste my time with such an attack but in the end I can still do e.g. report fradulent transactions to my bank. I don't deal with things like crypto where something can disappear without recourse and I certainly wouldn't use SMS if I were to do that.

vapid bluff
#

you know whats a really really terrible ui design decision?

#

groups of buttons that update when you open them

#

e.g. the windows settings page takes like half a second to update after you open it

#

sometimes like 3-4 seconds

#

anyway, afterwards there might be one or more buttons added to/removed from the group

#

due to this, the button you were about to press has moved somewhere else in the group and you end up clicking on another one by accident

#

pycharm does this too sometimes with the buttons in the top right if you have context dependent actions

#

i added a button for 'run file in python console' next to the ordinary run button and sometimes after stopping a project it takes a second for it to show up. when it does it displaces the ordinary run button and i end up clicking the 'run in console button' by accident.

#

it's like as a principle of good design, there should be something analogous to threadsafety but for UX. i.e. you have to keep the current interface (or part thereof) consistent for the duration of a user's attention to it.

undone berry
#

Extremely so - and the LDs don't seem to want to do much to fix it. So the only worthwhile votes in England are for Labour or the Greens

#

Also - Tony Blair/Gordon Brown was a bit wank as well

gentle moss
#

Lib Dems have actually said they want to run a surplus

#

which is insane

#

and to be fair Blair / Brown wasn't that bad

#

the financial crash fucked that happy streak up

undone berry
#

Lib Dems at this point are becoming just another right wing party who are a bit less overtly crazy

i mean a country isn't a fucking bank account

undone berry

Conservatives are becoming Republicans, Lib Dems are becoming neoliberal Democrats, Labour are actually left wing

gentle moss

running surplus isn't neccessarily a good thing for your citizens or your economy

also nice zinger

Neoliberal Dems

undone berry

then morons eat that idea up and run with it

id say labour is unlikely to scrap fptp on their own

okay, that movie HAS to get made

I can't imagine it not getting made - it doesn't even sound expensive

#

oh my god

#

DVD commentary

#

Cage talking about a movie about Cage where two Cage's play off against each other

#

damn, could've said face off

#

fuck

undone berry
#

I remember Shia Lebouef did the thing where he watched all of his movies - I feel like Nick Cage should do that too, with his pet octopus

gentle moss
#

:D

#

i think the most recent thing i heard about cage was that his cat ate a bunch of his magic mushrooms

#

so he took the mushrooms too and spent the trip with the cat

autumn herald
#

Bad tripsitter smh

undone berry
#

Every time I'm reminded about something Cage has done/did, it just makes me love him

gentle moss
#

yeah, i do enjoy his movies

#

the Gone in 60 Seconds remake was okay

#

way better than the original

#

that thing was janky as all hell

#

but i guess it was the 70's

undone berry
#

I didn't even know it wasn't an original

#

But, I can't ever remember watching a Cage film and not enjoying it

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

wtf politicians

#

stop doing dumb shit

plucky ridge
#

Okay so, I'm sure to anyone this wouldn't be a huge deal

gentle moss
#

reported in the guardian as "The Washington Post just posted this TikTok showing Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker assaulting a man in an airport"

plucky ridge
#

But god I'm so amazed by how small external hard drives are now

gentle moss
#

i was like "wtf, Booker assaulted someone?!"

plucky ridge
#

Are they sure it's that Booker?

#

And not like Booker T?

gentle moss
#

hah

plucky ridge
#

Does anyone even remember that guy?

gentle moss
#

green onions

#

Booker T Jooooones

plucky ridge
#

He was a wrestler in the ...... mid 00's I think it was

#

So we got 6 new little external hard drives for our audit department

#

1TB $50 a pop

#

Just blows my mind how cheap they are anymore

gentle moss
#

5200rpms though

#

i'll bet

#

still mega cheap

plucky ridge
#

Well sure but it's not like you're going to be gaming from the thing

#

Not needing to load tons of textures at a time

gentle moss
#

true

plucky ridge
#

And on top of that, due to USB 3.0 allowing power over the port, you only need the one cable

#

Which yeah, that's been a thing for a while

gentle moss
#

remember when everything flooded in i want to say thailand and costs of spinners skyrocketed?

plucky ridge
#

Oh yeah I remember that

gentle moss
#

backblaze and the likes were buying up externals super cheap and ripping the drives out

#

faaaar cheaper than ordering internals at the time

#

Walmart started limiting stock to like 2 per person too

plucky ridge
#

Sounds right

gentle moss
#

FAAAACKING ELL

#

£38 for a tb

plucky ridge
#

Right?

gentle moss
#

£90 for 4TB

#

O_O

#

two of them

#

raid mirror

#

boom, NAS

plucky ridge
#

Why RAID

#

There are so many other options out there

gentle moss
#

what's wrong with RAID?

plucky ridge
#

Okay, question on preferences

#

Not as efficient or effective as it could be on lower drive counts

#

Looooots of extra writes that burn down drive life

gentle moss
#

what would you do with two 4TB's?

plucky ridge
#

Eat them

#

No I'd likely have them on different devices

#

I already have one on my PS4 for example

gentle moss
#

i need to upgrade the drive in our PS4

plucky ridge
#

So the other would I guess be for my Pi when it comes in

#

Just get an external

gentle moss
#

still the original drive from launch

plucky ridge
#

Seriously

gentle moss
#

yerp

plucky ridge
#

No I'm saying an external is really the only upgrade you need

gentle moss
#

oh

#

it'd look ugly :(

#

unbalance my TV stand / media centre

plucky ridge
#

You say that buuuuuut

rough sapphire
#

You can't replace the internal one with it?

plucky ridge
#

Sorry had to find it

#

This is one that is colored to be a good match for a PS4

rough sapphire
#

Implying you don't have a special edition.

plucky ridge
#

Honestly most of them are so small you can hide it behind the system

#

And yeah, fair point, Scott

rough sapphire
#

I replaced the internal on the PS3 with a new one, I forget the size.

#

I imagine you can do the same with the 4

plucky ridge
#

SO

#

Okay

#

Interesting fact

rough sapphire
#

Bananas were once inedible?

plucky ridge
#

On the old PS4 models, apparently the internal harddrive is routed through USB as well

vestal briar
#

Ew

rough sapphire
#

Well it's Sony. I'm not exactly surprised.

plucky ridge
#

So getting an external could be just as good if not better

#

Dude, that statement could be used on anything

#

"Well it's [blank]. I'm not exactly surprised."

rough sapphire
#

Sony specifically. get_random(4)

plucky ridge
#

PS3 has been the only serious console flop they've had in their history

rough sapphire
#

Lolwut

plucky ridge
#

PS2 is still the best selling console ever

vestal briar
#

In all honesty, the playstation division is good

undone berry
#

PSVita

rough sapphire
#

It only had Grand Theft Auto 5 release on it.

undone berry
#

the janky Wii rip off

plucky ridge
#

Vita wasn't a wii ripoff

vestal briar
#

That's a handheld

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry Vita/PSP were both jokes, honestly.

undone berry
#

no, they're two separate things

vestal briar
#

Seperate to the main console line

plucky ridge
#

Oh right right

undone berry
#

they also had a wii ripoff

plucky ridge
#

I'm talking main home consoles

#

Not peripherals, not handhelds

vestal briar
#

Like comparing DS to the wii when they where launched

#

2 console lines

undone berry
#

Well - both consoles were successes

#

Whereas the Vita was an overt failure

plucky ridge
#

Vita holds a special place in my heart, even though I bought it near the end of its life

#

Has some of the best versions of certain games

#

Persona 4 Golden for example

vestal briar
#

I have never had one

undone berry
#

Yeah, I heard it was actually good, but no one bought them

plucky ridge
#

It was a powerful little machine

#

It exploded in Japan

#

but in the west yeah, it bombed

vestal briar
#

Samsung batteries?

plucky ridge
#

Well played

undone berry
#

Also, never having a console flop is a pretty shitty metric

#

when theres like 3 companies that make them

#

2 of which have only made 3/4

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, the 2 also was re-released for the slimline version, half way into it's lifespan.

#

1 -> 2 was a bigger jump than 2 -> 4, considering everything.

vestal briar
rough sapphire
#

@vestal briar The lack of OtherOS?

gentle moss
#

[17:09] Philip DeFranco: Implying you don't have a special edition.

#

i have a killzone pre-order edition

#

looked up the serial

#

internal hdd was made in 2012

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss Then yeah, that external would look like trash

gentle moss
#

plus the PS4 has an easily upgradable HDD

vestal briar
#

What

gentle moss
#

just a slide off cover

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, that too

vestal briar
#

PS4 > Xbox

gentle moss
#

it's not a special edition, it's just a different model number, for some reason

rough sapphire
#

@vestal briar Both are trash, admittedly.

vestal briar
#

But I don't care about consoles

rough sapphire
#

This is coming from someone who has a PS4

gentle moss
#

PS3 clusters were a real problem for Sony

vestal briar
#

Like comparing a shitty apple to a slightly less shitty apple

gentle moss
#

since they were selling the PS3 at a loss

#

expecting to make money back on Bluray and Games

vestal briar
#

Huh, didn't know that

gentle moss
#

for market dominance

vestal briar
#

Gone down the printer route™️

plucky ridge
#

They shot themselves heavily in the foot with the architecture

rough sapphire
#

I'm still waiting on optical media to go away. Discs are from a bygone era.

gentle moss
#

sorta how bluray won the format war

#

cheap PS3's

undone berry
#

Yeah - Discs need to die

vestal briar
#

I like discs

gentle moss
#

fucking worst

plucky ridge
#

They're a great format for long term storage

vestal briar
#

They're just fun

undone berry
#

I don't own a device with a disc drive

gentle moss
#

i don't even install disc drives in my PC

vestal briar
#

Not practical but fun

autumn herald
#

I totally read something else than discs

gentle moss
#

i stopped doing that in like

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge No, that'd be tapes.

undone berry
#

Maybe, but they're defunct for end users

gentle moss
#

2008?

#

maybe?

vestal briar
#

I have not had a disk drive for 3 years

gentle moss
#

i am not forking out ~£150 for a tape drive

#

and the tapes

plucky ridge
#

Wouldn't a tape degrade faster than a disk due to the magnetism slowly going away?

gentle moss
#

no

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss You don't have a large swath of data to be backed up, then.

plucky ridge
#

I thought that was the issue with old VHS tapes

vestal briar
#

Tapes are better suited to long term

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge Totally different

vestal briar
#

IBM has a big storage farm

gentle moss
#

if i wanted to store Terabytes of data i'd use AWS Glacier

vestal briar
#

All tape-based

plucky ridge
#

Gotcha gotcha

undone berry
#

tapes last 30 years

gentle moss
#

especially since i've spent a week building a script to manage inventories

#

rofl

plucky ridge
#

I'm happy to be proven wrong, I just didn't realize

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss That's more sunk cost if anything 😄

plucky ridge
#

I could swear that there was someone looking into optical storage again..

gentle moss
#

it's only expensive if you take it out

plucky ridge
#

I feel like it was Microsoft

vestal briar
#

Apparently cassets are making a comeback?

gentle moss
#

wot

rough sapphire
#

@vestal briar Oh no

#

Why?

gentle moss
#

no they're not

undone berry
#

DVDs last 50 years vs 30 years for tapes

gentle moss
#

if you say lofi i'll fucking murder you

vestal briar
#

Hm

undone berry
#

Blu Rays do 150

plucky ridge
#

Yeah that was my understanding Piers

undone berry
#

so its not really that close for truly long term

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry Except, you don't see businesses using DVDs for backups, lol..

vestal briar
#

Maybe economics?

undone berry
#

Yeah, but IT long term is a bit different to actual long term

plucky ridge
#

Okay well the concept wasn't asking about which is more business smart

#

I was talking about actual longevity

vestal briar
#

I thought the chemicals degraded inside of them

undone berry
#

Very little in IT considers more than decades

vestal briar
#

Making reading unclear

plucky ridge
#

What in discs, Owez?

gentle moss
#

even financial firms only have to store like 7 years iirc

plucky ridge
#

Working for one, I can confirm

rough sapphire
#

True @gentle moss

gentle moss
#

just get a massive stacker tower with loads of 5 3/4" bays

plucky ridge
#

If kept in a climate controlled setting, the dvd would last longer than the tape

gentle moss
#

crank out like 12 blurays at a time

plucky ridge
#

If just stored there

#

That was the point I was trying to make previously

gentle moss
#

yes

rough sapphire
#

DVDs are a lot easier to sanitize too.

gentle moss
#

BURN IT

rough sapphire
#

Throw 'em in a microwave, problem solved.

plucky ridge
#

And they make great coasters

gentle moss
#

to be fair you can just set fire to hard drives

undone berry
#

If you want your grand kids to be able to access your wedding photos - then bluray/cloud-backups is the way to go

vestal briar
#

Oh, I thought dvds had some thin adhesive

gentle moss
#

demagnetise it

vestal briar
#

Evidently not

plucky ridge
#

Nope

vestal briar
#

That makes sense then

plucky ridge
#

Literally plastic/metal/plastic

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss Unless it's thermite, you're not sanitizing a HDD/SDD

undone berry
#

The only way to sanitise a HDD is drilling it

plucky ridge
#

So unless it scratches or gets heated, they'll just exist

gentle moss
#

pretty sure the DoD says chucking it in a furnace is fair

vestal briar
#

Wonder how long vinyls hold up in accurate representation

gentle moss
#

and no piers

rough sapphire
#

@undone berry Actually, no

gentle moss
#

that's not DoD spec sanitisation

#

:3

rough sapphire
#

HDD is considerably easier to sanitize

vestal briar
#

Would be hard to test due to being analouge and all

undone berry
#

Thats what I was told by the person at a big financial corp

rough sapphire
#

SDD on the other hand, yeah no

plucky ridge
#

@vestal briar Quite well so long as they're kept in a climate controlled enviornment

undone berry
#

How do you sanitise a HDD?

gentle moss
#

HDD you just throw in a furnace or shred to 3x3x3mm bits

rough sapphire
#

HDD you can overwrite

plucky ridge
#

If you have them in a hot garage or attic for too long they might start to warp

rough sapphire
#

SSD has wear-leveling

gentle moss
#

SSD you'd have to throw in a furnace

#

basically

#

set fire to it

#

DoD's policy

rough sapphire
#

SSD is thermite

gentle moss
#

a furnace

rough sapphire
#

HDD is overwriting a few times

plucky ridge
#

What's funny is that the DoD first wipes HDD's and THEN burns them

gentle moss
#

that's easy like 1000c

#

then throw it in a furnace

plucky ridge
#

I don't know why that amuses me so much

rough sapphire
#

Rather be safe than sorry

gentle moss
#

furnace or tiny tiny cubes

#

was funny when GCHQ wanted to wipe the guardians laptops over the snowden stuff

plucky ridge
#

OH dude those industrial shredders

#

Those are fun videos to watch

gentle moss
#

took an angle grinder to every chip

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss That was interesting, actually

gentle moss
#

even the keyboard controllers etc

#

brb, driving home

plucky ridge
#

Why the keyboard

#

What did it ever do to them

rough sapphire
#

No idea, didn't make sense to me

vestal briar
#

Get a bunch of hard drive plates and throw them in the sea. Then claim you have made an artifical reef out of shredded metal filings

plucky ridge
#

Except that the plates also have coatings that could leech into the water

undone berry
#

That wont end up like France's tyre artificial reef

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge I think there were valid chips they wanted to get removed, but I think rather than saying that, they just said "Do all of them"

vestal briar
#

..For endangered fish that can survive the poison?

plucky ridge
#

Water doesn't stay in one place

rough sapphire
#

Which would make sense. Falls in line with the "Never confirm or deny" mentality.

plucky ridge
#

Sure

#

I had a thought but now oh no wait

#

I remember

#

When I was destroying some hard drives we had at work I salvaged a few of the magnets from a couple of the drives

#

They make a great used staple collector

rough sapphire
#

Ha, I used to have one of those

#

Got paranoid about leaving any electronics around it though, because that would be a stupid move.

#

So I eventually got rid of it

plucky ridge
#

There are honestly so few things that would get wrecked by a magnet on it anymore

#

No where near as much as it used to be

rough sapphire
#

Uh

#

I disagree. Most everything I have would be destroyed with a magnet lol

vestal briar
#

Nothing here

plucky ridge
#

LCD and LED monitors won't, your computer's hard drive will, sure, but your phone won't

rough sapphire
#

My phone 100% would

vestal briar
#

Modern ones take a bit to break now

plucky ridge
#

Is your phone actually a large tower with a spinning disk?

oak tangle
#

You're gonna need a bigger boat magnet

plucky ridge
#

I mean it could fuck your credit cards, sure

#

But in general, things aren't nearly as magnet sensitive as they once were

undone berry
#

I've fucked up train tickets by putting them next to my phone multiple times - its not that hard to fuck up magnetic strips

plucky ridge
#

For sure

oak tangle
#

Hmm, just launch it into a 7 Tesla MRI scanner.

sand goblet
#

Yeah, I messed up my public services card by doing that

#

that was only a couple years ago, too

oak tangle
#

It'll smash it pretty nicely

plucky ridge
#

I think RFID chips are safe, though

#

Maybe

sand goblet
#

PSC is just magstripe I think

plucky ridge
#

Not overly sure actually, now that I think

oak tangle
#

(by pure mechanical force)

undone berry
#

3/4 times I've had to hop train barrier things because of that - and once I fell on my arse

plucky ridge
#

Wouldn't the station attendants tackle you for that?

undone berry
#

Yeah, but in shitty smaller stations there aren't any

plucky ridge
#

Just the one surly janitor that's seen too much

undone berry
#

normally, you can just ask

#

but Its a pain in the ass to hunt someone down

plucky ridge
#

"Just check my tag, it's legit just broken"

undone berry
#

They're normally fine with that yeah

plucky ridge
#

Yeah I could see that, actually

#

You know what I miss?

#

Degaussing CRT computer monitors

#

It was such a satisfying sound

rough sapphire
#

I wiped a 12GB HDD some 90+ times 15~ years ago before smashing it and the CRT monitor to bits

#

I knew at the time 90 was useless, but it wasn't being used for anything

#

So it was more "How long can I run DBAN before I get bored of it?"

#

Had a nice sized sledgehammer at the time

#

That was nice

sand goblet
#

I keep coming across people that have accessibility issues with Discord

#

it sucks that client mods are against the ToS when they solve these problems

#

I guess that's how it has to be, but

solid pollen
#

What kind of accessibility issues?

sand goblet
#

Well as an example, some people are in medium/large servers of groups of people they know IRL

#

most people don't use their real names on Discord

#

someone I was talking to asked me if I knew of anything that would allow them to apply a tag, client-side, next to people's usernames in chat, so they could have their real names there and avoid being confused all the time

#

it turns out that a plugin for BD used to exist, last update was just over a year ago unfortunately, but it's interesting to see what people have come up with

#

it's one of the first times I've seen a client mod solve a real problem for real people, rather than just provide a nice-to-have enhancement

solid pollen
#

I guess you can just add note on people

#

You can even do that on mobile

#

Wonder who use this feature

sand goblet
#

That's useless though

#

you have to click on everyone to see the note

#

it's not just shown in chat

solid pollen
#

Hmm yeah

sand goblet
#

this is the (very low res) example provided on the page I was looking at

#

just like the bot tag

gentle moss

[17:28] Mr. Hemlock: What did it ever do to them
[17:28] Philip DeFranco: No idea, didn't make sense to me

they destroyed anything that could store anything

#

all firmware chips etc

sand goblet
#

on the other hand there's just stuff that sounds really nice to have

#

like a spotify player at the bottom of the channel list or unread counter on channels

#

but there are real problems that can be solved I think

gentle moss
#

@plucky ridge hells yeah

Any tea over D looks discoloured

#

E looks a bit orange

undone berry
#

you're crazy

#

the darkest tea is too dark

#

but besides that, its descending order of appeal

vapid bluff
#

ive never seen tea C-F coloured in my life

#

nor this opaque

#

@gentle moss my grandparents do the 6

#

maybe they just wanted an early taste of death

gentle moss
#

haha

undone berry
#

oh wait - I misreemembered the chart. The darkest 4 teas look right, the lightest two look a bit alien

vestal briar
gentle moss
#

an E @vestal briar ?!?!

#

might as well drink some fucking milk

vestal briar
#

I take back that statement

#

I'll take a 3D or 2D

#

3 very preferable

#

4 if the breads out of date

gentle moss
#

i like a proper crunch to my toast

#

so i go 4

#

and a strong tea is waaaaay better than some milky shit

vestal briar
#

I'm in the middle with my tea

I just realized that NsJail is built by Google

#

That's a good thing I guess

sand goblet
#

well, it's not an official google project

#

but it's maintained by googlers, yes

solid pollen
#

Yeah they clearly say it on their README

#

Does Google have too much money?

#

They probably do

sand goblet
#

Naturally

solid pollen
#

I mean, why they do that? To earn popularity?

sand goblet
#

No, because they want to

#

Googlers get time at work to work on their own projects

solid pollen
#

They do? That's nice

vestal briar
#

I mean, it's to keep you as long as possible

#

12 hour workdays but you get free lunch™️

20% time is the thing - they get to spend one day a week on anything they like

#

turns out that "not top 50%" guy is an IT Consultant

#

i guess that explains where the Government find them

sweet mother of god my flamethrower worked first time

all files, gone.

oak tangle
#

That's a great feeling

#

Coding something and it works at the first run

#

Especially if you're dealing with something as annoying as having to delete each file individually from a vault

gentle moss

indeed

4-5 hour job request

24 hour before inventory update

#

only 24 hours after a job is completed to get the output

time to make sure the upload part of this script saves a json file

undone berry
#

Jesus Christ. I assumed he was like a welder or some esoteric trade position, but an it consultant shouldn't be even close to that stupid.

gentle moss
#

he also races motorbikes in his spare time

#

"not in the top 50%!"

#

he's apparently quite good on the club circuit

undone berry
#

He should be laughed out of his job

gentle moss
#

can't even use google

#

what an IT consultant

#

also if you actually take into account people who don't earn enough to pay tax

#

he's in the top 3% of earners

undone berry

I think part of his argument is that the richest people don't earn a salary, rather that they earn money passively via stocks or whatever. But that was a shit argument, put across its a shit way, and he'd obviously still be in the top 5%
