@buoyant pendant node has a simple float sum about 8x faster. And that is with the overhead of a for loop, as it does not have timeit. Browser (chrome) was about 6x faster
var start = new Date()
var simulateTime = 1000
for(var i = 0; i < 1000000000; i++) {
a = 3.0+3.0;
}
var end = new Date() - start
console.info('Execution time: %dms', end)```
py -m timeit "3.0+3.0"```
Yeah but you can speed that up in so many ways
I agree that just plain python is slower
But you just have more options to make it so much faster
Lets take something like adding a 1000 element array or something like that. Numpy is in c and uses broadcasting so its blazingly fast. Lets say you want to do some ray tracing, you can run stuff on the gpu!
You want jit? Use numba!!
I mean, you can just call a C program from python
I just recently wrote a example for the gpu. It has 214,748,364,800 iterations per second! Each time calculating the euclidian distance and then doing some comparisons. 50fps
Thats just amazing
I think they both have their areas of expertise
I mean thats why they both exist and are num1/2!
indeed, though JS is still faster than python. It also has JIT and such. the fact you can call C code from python does not help the interpreter any. When choosing between python and JS, performance is not really a concern anyway.
True
I want to do a comparison to C, but the compiler keeps removing my math
I think I got it though
Does anyone know a frontend discord server?
of course the fact that you can call C code from python does help the interpreter a lot
one of the reasons perl has been and sadly is still quite successful is that it provides a high level abstraction and the ability to glue system level code together via C FFI stuff
https://github.com/NeKitDS/gd.py/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.rst opinions on the word style of the contributing file/its contents?
@rough sapphire There's a JS discord called SpeakJS, I guess that'd probably be a pretty good place to go for frontend-related issues.
@modern island why did you use quotation blocks? That look pretty strange IMO
I'm also not a huge fan of inline comments for the code style section, you should try using smaller code blocks and then commenting below or above
have you met anyone from Greenland
i'm not sure what that has to do with anything
but i have known people from greenland
🤔
was just thinking.. about how to get there..
then it hit me.. I've never met anyone from there
oh
and pretty developed
not saying greenland isn't developed
but iceland has cities and shit
wow
let me see if they list jobs on linkedin
iirc there's also some tiny island near the arctic most people don't need a visa for
Very Scandinavian-looking architecture.
Which I guess makes sense, given that it's Danish territory.
there's 4 job posts listed on linkedin..
there's probably a danish site with more.. I guess
I wonder how people feel about living there
Suicide in Greenland is a significant national social issue. Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world: reports between 1985 and 2012 showed that an average of 83 people in 100,000 committed suicide, more than twice the rate of the second placed country, Lithuania.G...
Not that great, apparently.
that's a lot
I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to Seasonal Affective Disorder
The study noted a significant variation of the suicide rate in relation to the season, characterized by peaks in June and troughs in the winter.
wonder why it doesn't affect people in the UK.. I mean it rains all the time :v
it's 5 degrees in June.. lol
in the north* apparently
rest of the place..it's 20
Researchers have blamed insomnia caused by incessant daylight.
I can believe that, but I come from a very northern region, and midnight sun is a fixable problem.
You just need good curtains.
They should subsidize darkening curtains.
Yeah, if you don't set up your bedroom correctly it sucks.
Yeah, that helps. Those airplane eyecovers.
i wear them during the summer in the UK too
first time I experienced that was in Paris.. had a problem when the sun didn't go down and it was 10 pm lol
cause fuck off sun at 6-7am
In late june the sun would rise at like 2am in my hometown.
it's like the sun is up by the time you get to sleep XD lol
Oftentimes, yes.
Especially back in uni.
And it never really gets dark.
When the sun is down, it's right below the horizon.
Yeah I'll admit my sleep schedule is pretty messed up 😉
I got lost in development, 2 and a bit hours went by and it was 2am by the time I turned the computer off
Couldn't get to sleep until 3 though
Annnd.. woke up at 7 for school
i did ~13 hours of work at home unpaid this week
so i think i'll just sit in the office and read twitter
¬_¬
Or read discord :)
don't have to, i absorb it through the electromagnetic spectrum
@gentle moss self bots are against tos
bleep blorp
i am a robot
oooooooooooooooooooooh
is that vomit i taste in my mouth
Trump.. In a TV show?
I used to watch the original Apprentice.. it was pretty good
then they put celebs in it and ruined it
"it was pretty good"
i mean, i disagree massively
i don't really find a group of vindictive idiots fawning over an overblown practically bankrupt moron for a chance at a pointless job that's usually used as a launching pad for a larger media career
@solid pollen @pseudo crystal thanks for your feedback and suggestions. will improve soon.

It is higher in the channel history
I was at school so couldn’t respond
sorry for inconvenience and interrupting :/
on a related note.. I've a knack for predicting election outcomes.. from brazil, phillipines, canada, france, to brexit and boris johnson.. to Trump in 2016.. and I'm predicting he's going to win again in 2020
oh no interruption, i was just calling the president of the united states a syphilitic moron
I thought syphillis killed people
to be fair i've never seen you attempt to predict anything so i can't judge your statement
but an octopus managed to guess the winner of the world cup so
I predicted Boris Johnson cmon lol
syphilis rots your brain
boris johnson hasn't been through an election
he was never elected in a GE
it was an internal party vote that was only going to go one way
plz
sure, but I said he was going to be next PM way before
@rough sapphire predicting French election? Who do you think is going to win the next election?
did you predict T.May to not win the 2017 election?
how do you think this december general election will go?
no I didn't predict anything related to the UK before Brexit
err
I predicted Macron twice
2017 is after brexit
next one, I will let you know when I make my prediction
Twice?
well the presidential election in 2017.. but something else recently.. uh I forget
really.. what did he go up against that lady for
This year?
what's her face.. the one they call joan of arc
Marine le pen? 😄
can't even remember candidates
Tbh there was 11 candidates i don’t even remember all of them
it's like 11 pm and it's been a long day lol
But there is two turn for french elections, he won the first and the second
woke up at like 3:40 am cuz my friend was worried about her roommate being depressed
maybe that’s the second thing?
yeah possibly
yeah i'm just saying like
3:40AM outch
you're not an electoral savant
all i'm saying is.. I have good odds.. probably should use this to bet on an election:p
what's that website in the uk that lets you do that
okay, so what do you think the outcome of the 2019 december general election in the UK is
You can bet on election? I should do it for the next one..
how do you think the tory policies are going to play with the majority of the country?
I will let you know when I make a prediction
don't you think the split votes in marginals are going to be a problem for the major parties?
basically you pull something out your ass and it's your prediction, right?
yeah! I saw it last time in 2016.. it was so cool.. the odds were favoring Clinton, if someone had bet on Trump then they would've been a millionaire
:P
like a shit magic 8 ball
reminds me of something consultants say
plus the problem was people were looking at popularity polls rather than considering how the electoral college would factor in
clinton did win, in a first past the post system
it's just the electoral college is super fucked so nailing a few smaller states can net you a shit load of vote power
Yeah yeah bisk we know the story
i believe i read a paper before that suggested it's possible to become president with only ~30% of the vote
the other 70% could vote for your opponent and you could still win
Brexit.. why people voted for it?
morons were lied to by newspapers
it's not even a probably
it's just the truth
no one had a clue wtf they were voting for or what it meant
people who voted to leave all voted leave for different reasons and had different ideas of what leave meant
bisk. You can't say that. you've got to respect the willothepeople
however most of them weren't particularly versed in the integration of UK and EU law
and the complexities of 40 years of intertwined legislation
BUT NO
BANANAS ARE TOO BENDY
PASSPORTS WILL BE BLUE AGAIN
ALL THE POLISH PEOPLE WILL BE DEPORTED
There was just no exit plan, just a crazy pipe dream of an idea
exactly
Yeah exactly
the eurosceptics have had 40 years to come up with a plan
I've literally never seen an argument for Brexit that seems even slightly valid
and they had.....
nothing
ever since the maastricht treaty there has been no valid reason to exit
or any simple method
Article 50 was literally designed for like a bat shit crazy country that wanted to go be a fucking crazy nutjob state
it wasn't designed to create a smooth exit
The brexit is just “hey we are going to get out, because we only want the advantages, but not the disadvantages! So you are going to give use everything we want!”
they're deporting the Poles?
don't want the advantages or the disadvantages
wut
the advantage is free trade as part of a trading block
but pro brexit people don't want to stay in the single market
Tip, If you are going to fight with one of the biggest bureaucracy in the world, on legal grounds, come with a plan 😬
missed the point there tron
Ease of travel, consistent laws and rules across multiple areas...
free trade
There's lots of benefits
right to liev and work in any of 28 countries
well, sometimes moving regulations forward can be tricky
like trying to get better tax avoidance / evasion laws across the entire trading block
True. The bigger something is, the harder it is for things to change
and some tiny island keeps vetoing them
Yeah and some things to pay.. pfff..
It's like trying to make a u-turn in a cruise ship
us and Lux
but its incredibly difficult to have meaningful tax laws as a solitary country
the only way to do it is part of a big block
you end up in a race to the bottom as a solo nation
I'll meet you guys down there....
which, i believe, what the rich posh wanker tories want
reduce worker's rights
reduce taxes on capital gains
make flight of capital easier
i mean the main tory donors are millionaires
flog off public services and have private industry fuck them up
etc etc etc
hard to do that when you're in the EU, at least some of it
specifically worker's rights
you can see this pattern many times in history: power/fame/status/money hungry people convince the population or a solid chunk of it that their problems are to be blamed on X. whether X is or isn't the source of their problems isn't even the point. It's just a diversionary scapegoat and means to power.
Yep
"we want to leave the EU so we can improve worker's rights!"
i think brexit is cut from the same cloth
yeah, thats the best thing about the eu. Workers rights and consumer rights
It'll swing back the other way eventually
But we're on the upswing of a really terrible time
you just can't do worse
give me a giant fucking bin and a JCB
i'll dump the entire fucking country into it and shove it into the atlantic
it can fuck off to america
Thanks for that
i'll set fire to it first
like a viking funeral
but for toxic waste
i'm in a mood today ¬_¬
There there
I was in one yesterday, but it was less angry and more really really sad
But today I'm starting my morning with Taco Bell
So that should keep things on a good path
The UK already imports too much from the US - but if we need one thing, its more drive thru takeaways
We got boatloads of them here
Mcdonalds and KFC are the only ones here
Is Mexican food really a thing over there?
Yeah, but mostly mid range chain restaurants
Makes sense
yeah
That makes a lot more sense
because those don't comply to the decent EU standards
i saw a trade person the other day comparing EU / US food regs
was funny
like orange juice in the US is allowed a certain % of insect / maggot or whatever
Protein
They also fuck up their eggs
This is making me sad to think about
yeah, pretty fucked up innit
don't worry - the UK is on its way to join you
i can't really tell if it doesn't make me sad because i'm clinically depressed or that i've given up giving a fuck
i made something like that the other day
Hmm..
bacon, scrambled eggs, diced onions
i’m hungry now
Cheese?
Fair trade
Ooo, that also sounds good
yeah, you just fucking....
dice up some potatoes, leeks and onions
fry them off a little bit

I can do eggs
I can't face the washing up
:>
Appart from that
Did you have a stroke for a second?
No, autocorrect
Fair enough
@undone berry Then you need to invoke the old code: "I cooked, you clean"
But then you have to do it both ways and wash their stuff up
Nah that's when you hide in the bathroom
I'm just gonna carry on living off chicken nuggets and cheese sandwhiches
and die at 40
40 is being generous if you're tossing chicken nuggets in there
35 tops
Oh, so I've started putting two tea bags in my mug. One black tea and one green tea. It's actually pretty good, and I really like my tea absurdly strong.
And on top of that, the green tea balances out the amount of caffeine so I don't get the anxiety or the shakes
hah
how does it balance out?
you think chicken nuggets and cheese sandwiches are a way to kill yourself early
here
surely its still just as much caffeine
hold my bottles of vodka
There's a specific thing in tea that helps your body process or neutralize caffeine
yeah tbf, I might eat like shit, but I don't smoke or drink so I should make it to like 50 before the heart disease kicks in
Green tea happens to have more of it than black tea
oh sure
i smoked heavily for about 8-9 years
drank like a fish too
stopped that now though
i still have a nicotine addiction, but i vape now
better for me
and the booze was just a depressive phase type thing
was in a sucky place
hard to get out of the spiral when you're in it
"Better" is rather deceptive
"Better" is rather deceptive howso? There is no evidence that vaping is bad for you
i don't hock up black tar
and i can smell stuff now
the USA has vaping problems charlie
black market shit and bad FDA regs
also you probably don't stink like cigarettes
They're both not great for you. Better than smoking yes, but still not better than not smoking or vaping

They've shown that vaping decreases the oxygen absorption to your blood, more than cigs do. But I mean there really isn't a healthy nicotine product. They've all got adverse effects in the long term
US study?
not that i'm dissing the study
i just know there are regulatory differences between EU and US
https://www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/news/e-cigarettes
Recent independent studies from PHE show that most of the chemicals causing smoking related disease are absent in e-cigarettes, and chemicals that are present pose little danger.
I'll stick with the BHF
I'll stick with just not using either
I don't need that extra expense
And considering the people I do know that vape are doing it near constantly
Like it's a security blanket
I do find the people that are just doing it constantly incredibly annoying
They can't put the damn thing down
for me it's the nicotine addiction, the habit of having a drag and the feeling of stuff in my lungs
i hate those robo-dick style vapes though
the weird huge battery pack guys
Yerp.
how am i supposed to play quake and vape if it's a giant robot penis
But I really feel like the comparison should be to vaping vs not vaping rather than vaping vs smoking
I think vaping is an annoying habit for someone to have, but I also think its probably not meaningfully harmful
Other than the potential of second hand nicotine addition, you're likely right
I'm just overly paranoid
I've tried smoking and I don't seem to have an addiction to it.
yeah, i don't like cigarettes at all
Or like, I can go years between
Well even when I enjoyed a cigar or so
It's just not one of the hooks for me
never liked cigarettes really
Which is surprising, since there were addiction issues in my family. My aunt and my uncle are a part of AA. Granted they've been sober for a long long time, well before I really can remember. But that does mean it's in the bloodline somewhere
So I'm always surprised when I don't get caught up in it, you know?
yeah
i think it's more of a nurture rather than nature thing though
however there is so much exposure to that stuff as you grow up etc
really difficult to pin point etc
i think it can often be a symptom of a deeper problem
There are some people that are more genetically prone to it, but it probably also helped that I've had to take medication for nearly all my life to help with my ADHD and depression and stuff so I understood the importance of control and the discipline of taking stuff on time and all that
So it might be both, who knows
¯_(ツ)_/¯
i've just been informed that a bunch of work i did to create an automated AWS S3 Glacier vault backup system for some data was pointless
as they didn't realise they were already backing up alll the data with another service
Gotta love it
can't delete a vault full of items either
so now i have to write something to remove all the items from the vault
Wait you can't?
Oh oh oh oh oh
27,000 items
Yeeesssss
will have to rename the whole project
smh
Not necessarily. It can just be a delete function/module of the project
Another acceptable name would be "kill_it_with_fire"
plays a short clip from Talking Heads
not sure i want to go that far
Okay so I was just thinking "Man, I wish I could still show what song I was listening to even with my custom status."
Then I clicked on my name
haha
Turns out, it does do double duty
so it does
Good on them
now the question is
do i actually spend the last 2 hours of my work day writing this myself
orrrrr
do i just use someone elses script
one makes me seem productive
the other makes me seem efficient

There has to be an easier way
as in just running stage one of the process can take 3-5 hours
It seems silly there isn't one
since you need to get data on every item in the vault
and glacier isn't designed for fast recovery of info
so just getting the id's for all the items in the vault willt ake hours
i think once that's complete then deleting them is a pretty quick enumeration process
You're doing it via the REST API right?
yeah
the failure i made in my upload script was not storing the json results of each upload
if i'd have done that then this would be a quicker task
So you're going to have to query it just to find out what's in there, yeah that's... going to be painful
seems mad you can't just have a "delete this vault, no, yes, really. delete this whole vault. nope, i promise i want to delete everything in here."
Right?
That's my thought
At least from the console
Maybe not via request or command line but at least let me do that from the GUI
i guess it just stores them all as objects or something that are related
it's like a big truck you just dump stuff on
not a series of tubes
Nice spin on that
step 1: get inventory (hours)
step 2: check status of job until it's complete
step 3: dump the json to a file
step 4: iterate through 27,000 items and delete them
My heart goes out to you
the requests are free
but the vault has only been live for 5 days
so it's an early deletion fee per gb
Fair enough
i think i will definitely write that flamethrower function
i never want to manually run this task again
HA
???
kinda
I'm really confused why it's 404ing
I made a github pages thing earlier and it worked instantly
and now it isn't
nvm it's working now for some reason
Were you not logged in or possibly it was just a hiccup on their side
after looking around, it seems that it takes around 20 mins to update the website after you make changes
(although it took 40 mins for mine to update)
Which could be a matter of too much traffic on the site or too many changes happening at once so they just had to defer it until they could process it or what not
yeah
also now this is working https://edgynerd.github.io/bouncy-ball/
I've started learning some p5.js for web animation stuff
The gyrating after they've effectively stopped bouncing is messing with my eyes
actually
I don't really know how I'd fix that
this.y = this.y + this.yVel
if (this.y > height - 25) {
this.yVel = this.yVel * -1
} else if (this.yVel > -2 && this.yVel < 0) {
this.yVel = this.yVel * -1
} else if (this.yVel > 0) {
this.yVel = this.yVel * 1.07
} else {
this.yVel = this.yVel * 0.9
}
my bouncing code is this (yes I know this is terrible but it works)
and if I try to add in a check for that it ruins the bouncing
Yeah I'm not sure, honestly. I never learned how to deal with making a physics engine like that or anything
So much I still need to learn...
wanna learn boto3 and build this flamethrower for me?
fuck sake, i wanna build this as my own personal project
but i DO NOT want to incur AWS fees
rofl
yeah but i want to expand my project to cover much larger data sets
i think the most i could see our customers throwing up is maybe 10TB
but i want it to be able to handle any quantity of data
That's how the Bezos gets the monies
getting S3 bucket retentions wrong could land you with something like $100 bill for a 10GB download
the annoying thing is
if you do it right
it's the CHEAPEST storage you can imagine
i've been very tempted to use glacier for full backups of my important data
chance of losing the data? low
if i do? $200 to recover it aint shit.
fyi @jagged fog Glacier is literally tape storage
that's why it can take 3-5 hours to recover data
they literally have robots moving tapes around a warehouse datacentre
I was about to say I thought tape storage had a relatively short shelf life but then realized that it's no different than hard drives in that regard
The only ones that don't degrade with time are optical medias
Or rather, don't degrade nearly as quickly.
Centuries rather than decades if stored correctly
(I think. Might just be talking out of my ass)
https://www.twitch.tv/beehivekay/ - writing something that has nothing to do with AWS because fuck that beehive
Beautiful
haha nice
When you publish a project to GitHub without a license people are still allowed to fork your project due to GitHub's forking agreement: https://help.github.com/en/github/site-policy/github-terms-of-service
"By setting your repositories to be viewed publicly, you agree to allow others to view and "fork" your repositories (this means that others may make their own copies of Content from your repositories in repositories they control)."
My question would be: Am I allowed to maintain a fork on GitHub? It will be clearly visible that my fork is a fork. (I will not reupload the code to GitHub so the fork relationship isn't visible.)
GitHub seems to be giving me implicit permission by letting me fork. Furthermore they explicitely give me the permission since it is clearly stated in their ToS. And GitHub gives me implicit permission by letting me add changes to a fork which as far as I can see does not clearly state in their ToS.
GitHub says the following in that regard:
"If you set your pages and repositories to be viewed publicly, you grant each User of GitHub a nonexclusive, worldwide license to use, display, and perform Your Content through the GitHub Service and to reproduce Your Content solely on GitHub as permitted through GitHub's functionality (for example, through forking)."
Another one of GitHub's functionality is adding commits to a fork. If interpreted that way I'm within my rights to modify the code on the fork and add my own personal spin to it.
And let's asumme I cannot contact the owner to make him clarify the licensing agreement (e.g. giving me explicit right or adding a FOSS license) because he is just unreachable/doesn't respond/whatever.
All code uploaded to GH is licensed so that GH's services can function, yes
so you can fork
My question is more if I'm allowed to add code changes to a fork.
that's what I meant with maintaining a fork. It will have my own changes on it.
I think so, yeah
what license should you use if you don't want people trying to use your code for profit
https://choosealicense.com/ No better website for that
Non-judgmental guidance on choosing a license for your open source project
@rough sapphire well if you have a license like that then your software is not open source
there's this commons clause thing but you'll be shat on for using it
Choosealicense says:
"If you find software that doesn’t have a license, that generally means you have no permission from the creators of the software to use, modify, or share the software. Although a code host such as GitHub may allow you to view and fork the code, this does not imply that you are permitted to use, modify, or share the software for any purpose."
So I am not allowed to add changes to a fork. Bit of a contradiction of what I'm seeing when I read the ToS. 🤷
But I guess it's true that I'm not allowed to execute the source code. So I'm keeping my fingers from projects without a license.
Yeah no OSS approved forbid commercial use
what's commons clause
exactly what it sounds like
added to an open-source license, it can make the license no longer open-source by forbidding commercial use
And call it the tron license
fyi I refuse to use commons clause projects
I sometimes see people adding a license that allow commercial, for profit use and private use but then they write in their README.md that they do not approve people running a separate instance or an instance that generates revenue.
Am I right in saying that the provided LICENSE is what counts?
yeah, the LICENSE is what will hold up in court
there's a reason they're worded the way they are
and it isn't to make them hard to read
I don't see what's wrong with forbidding commercial use
It goes against the spirit and intention of open source
but it's still free
The whole point is that you're not limiting what people can do with your software
hmm
I also can't really think of a good reason to prevent commercial use
hmm something to think about
I was thinking they repackage something open source with some minor add ons and sell it.. but then if it sells it might be necessary..
well what's wrong with repackaging it?
ok fair point
do people get something out of it being repackaged?
if you don't want someone to do something and then sell it, do it yourself
If commercial use was forbidden in a library it'd mean that if your giant project that relies on a tiny functionality of that library you'd be not allowed to monetize your project.
yeah
If you are working on a giant project and you don't want other people to compete with you you shouldn't make it open source.
even gnu licenses, which are considered libre (free as in speech), allow commercial use
ok I understand better now
I was curious how PyPi handled it. Apparently 13.5% of the packages don't have an OSS license: https://snyk.io/blog/over-10-of-python-packages-on-pypi-are-distributed-without-any-license/
I thought the PSF handled that but apparently not? Imagine mistyping a package name and suddenly you are running unlicensed code.
I mean, I suspect those people are uploading their own packages to pypi
those people are uploading their own packages to pypi
who?
@latent marsh what was dev work like back then? what was your workflow like? what kind of problems did you solve? if you dont mind my asking
I'm a little bit concerned
I'm very concerned personally
I thought them things where extinct
This is quite interesting https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/136584/4313662
well, for now we are thriving, though we can predict challenging times ahead, the current status is very good
(but it would be foolish not to be concerned)

if it's proper hot and you're drinking spirits then the alcohol makes the burn far worse
unless you're talking about the other end ¬_¬
@gentle moss Anytime I have sinus issues I just take an Alka-Seltzer and wait a couple hours. Seems to always work
¯_(ツ)_/¯
i've had some sudafed
and have been sniffing the vapours from a boiling cup of water mixed with vix
should be a lil' better in a bit, but i still feel like i'm constantly about to sneeze
Im deffo talking about the other end
The drinking makes my bowels go nuts
But the ghost chili adds a hint of ouch to it
hah
i never so much have a problem with the hot food
but a lot of spirits does end up in a pebble dashed bowl
Apparently if you want a break from a blocked nose, then doing some short rapid excercise, like pushups, clears it for a little while
ghosts come up super quick
yeah, i used to do that sometimes charlie
but they're so blocked i'd be doing like pressups every 2 minutes
fck that noiz
MY AWS JOB IS DONE
that only took uhhhhh
bisk, get swole! 🏋
4 hours
now i have a 10mb json file full of ~25k file descriptors
which i now have to iterate over to delete everything from the glacier vault before i can delete the vault itself
wew, 200k lines
but print() is soo easy! 😄
to be honest i've never made something that handles anything as messy as amazon's boto3 shit
bar wikipedia's API
fuck me that thing
urrrrrggggg
i swear they designed this to be incredibly tricky to use to stop idiots throwing shit in / out of glacier all the damn time
data modelling is such an exercise for me. my brain just runs off on each field's logic branch, and i get into a morass of circular thoughts. 😵
most annoying one i had to look at was a warehouse database
hehe. i have too much experience in that area...its probably trained me in horrible ways.
the guy who originally built the db was a friggin idiot
didn't use any relations whatsoever
fudged it all in php
he'd also never worked in a warehouse
or even asked for a spec
blergh. logistics is a lot like finance from a data perspective...
never done finance stuff
Fuck data modeling
but i mean i'm not that hot at this stuff and i'm pretty sure i know that you need to have some relations between your locations and products table
etc
its all transactional... money/item/etc moved from here to here to here to here...
the fucking worst thing i saw in his php was like a 600 character line that was an SQL query
oof
boss basically came to me on the side and was like "i don't think he's doing good on this project... take a look?"
once i clicked on JOINs...so much opened up.
took 20 minutes to basically tell him to throw it in the bin and hire a real dev
the fucking muggins who made it in the first place was "head hunted" from us by a financial firm
¬_¬
that poor bank. "Iceberg ahead!"
it's actually a debt / loan financing company for agencies
also handles BACS payments etc
You sure he wasn't just commiting corprate espionage ;)
they've spent like £2m on this web portal for agencies to handle all their own employees / all sorts
when if they'd done what we suggested, hired a team of 5 good developers in house for 2 years, the product would be done by now
and would work on more than a 1080p screen
:D
lol. hardcoded dimensions? nice. its like 1998 all over again.
that's their outsourced russian development team
This site is best viewed at 800x600
pretty funny, the IT manager of that company has been complaining since the inception of the project
just the other week he wrote a ~100 page report on everything that's broken
how much time / effort it'll cost to fix
and the CEO / Managers of other departments are just ignoring that shit and order more features for an already broken platform
:D:D
they've had 3 "launch parties"
"requirements doc? nah...we'll just feed you features as you go. it'll be cheaper."
it was supposed to be complete 2 years ago and have cost £500k
we actually quoted them decent outsourced developers for about £250k
team of 4 or 5 could crank that app out in a year
"project manager? why do we need one of them?"
project goes to shit
There's this "cybercenturian" competition i'm in, it's just some sysadmin tasks
"hm... we'll hire a project manager."
project manager: "this shit is so fucked, we need to do <insert reasonable suggestion>."
"you're fired."
corporations sometimes man
fucking mental
haha. i was just about to finish that timeline in the exact same way.
annoyingly they're one of our customers for IT support
but luckily that tyre fire is nowhere near our remit
\o/
it is fun to watch it burn down though
🍿
the fucking laughs we had when 60% of their OWN STAFF couldn't use the app because they didn't all have 1080p screens
solution?
large monitor/video card purchase?
lol. knew it!
👏
great for us though as we put markup on it
its like they don't even teach BCAs in business school...
so now they had to pay the developers to make it work on other size screens AND in the mean time dish out for shit loads of screens
woop woop
feels like a sketch show sometimes
i'm agonizing over log message formats
i feel like they shouldn't have a fullstop at the end of them
but then part of me is like "yes it should"
or "too many words, less plz"
lol. i am actually unrolling my previous log format in this data model...
the code refactor is going to be just as annoying.
i've got a massive refactor job i'm trying to avoid
lots of disparate systems that can now all fall under the same roof
so i need to figure out how to turn them into something that isn't an ugly shit show
latest commit for my glacier control thing
OBEY ALL THE PEP8'S
hah, just spotted a quote mark fuck up
ups
shit loads more to do to make it more robust
but i've found most available tools for AWS glacier are uhhh
shit.
my first proper open source project \o/
User is an idiot... yep. its a bisk product. 🤣
¬_¬
you should see some of the ones i made for docker container creation at work
they were only supposed to be used by me
so it's shit like "wtf u doin u fukkin idiot"
hehe. "soz. that debug print wasn't supposed to make it through to the master branch."
maybe

i was happily listening to some Above & Beyond Anjunabeats mixes and then all of a sudden this soft ass shit comes on
i'm like "oh okay we've got a break before the next drop"
nope, youtube thinks i want to listen to maroon5
oh shit, i just realised i made a bad on line 190
cough
its a one-shot (for now i suppose)...so exit is appropriate. but yeah, wrap it in a while would be simple enough.
That's continuing from User is an idiot :)
fair enough. could add a Do better next time. 😉
haha
yeah, it's all gonna get wrapped up nice
i like the term one-shot
i'm gonna steal that
calculates royalty fees
print("Discharging credit card, please wait..")
time.sleep(20)
Making a shell sounds cool..
I spent one and a half hours trying to solve an issue with a frontend framework, it turns out I skipped a single paragraph in the documentation
new record -3-
Python or JS?
HTML+CSS+JS
I just had to add
<div class="mdc-drawer-scrim"></div>```
and that was it
I still have a lot to do orz
I feel like every time I have to use JS i end up with issues caused by shitty documentation
Looks like Rick and morty releases today
Me after watching a Tom Scott video about how to do sql injection to take down a website: insert hackerman
@prisma beacon
Are you looking at this OS specifically because of the cryptocurrencies it has?
Bitcoin BitTorrent Blockstack GraphViz Lightning Monero TREZOR Urbit Zcash ZeroTier
no, the os is built ontop of the bitcoin blockchain
made by desantis
its hard to explain tbh
The first link in https://github.com/1deos/deosorg links to https://libdeos.github.io/deos-graphviz/
Which is 404
The site(s), deos.org/deos.ai, are 404
That repo has been set to read-only, This repository has been archived by the owner. It is now read-only.
So, yeah, those are huge signs to not install it, because you'll get no support from them at all.
That's evident by you having to come here for help.
Also, while we helpers appreciate the offer for any money, we do our work voluntarily. 😄
I see
but
lets say i know its safe
i know it seems sketchy but i know this is the right repo
I have doubts about it's safety
Nothing that's severely out of date and unmaintained is safe really
nmm
this is so annoying
It looks like you're giving it an extra line so it kinda makes sense
My rust is great rs let file_path = PathBuf::from( Rc::try_unwrap( s.call_on_id("open_file_name", |view: &mut EditView| view.get_content()) .unwrap(), ) .unwrap(), ); // TODO fix
// TODO fix
@undone berry I'm guessing that's because python automatically appends \n when print() is called
@fossil solar write your own print func which writes to stdout directly
Probably a lot easier to just use print(whatever_stuff, end="")
yeah, or wrap that in a function
but I'm guessing that since he's doing hackerrank, he's already reading from stdin so might as well be consistent
oh sure
I forget that hackerrank makes you read in manually
although you can still use input to read in manually
ah alright
IMO Hackerrank was the worst of those sites
||"biggest movie of the year"||
||Endgame was hot garbage, and Infinity War was levels better.||
||i hear it wasn't even "cinema"...||
||I... don't know what you mean by that 👀 ||
||Oh, gotcha.||
||SSBkaWRuJ3Qgd2F0Y2ggZWl0aGVyID48||
||Mr. Robot is airing at 8PM EST tonight||
||Just a heads up||
So, IN LESS THAN 1.5 HOURS \ o /
And Rick and Morty is like 12EST
I've asked this question here a couple times, but since I didn't get a response, I posted it to Stack Overflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/58794856/python-ssl-error-on-discord-py-ssl-sslcertverificationerror-certificate-verify
Any help would be greatly appreciated
@dusty shadow Looks like a connection issue - Cannot connect to host discordapp.com:443 ssl:True
hmm, nope. curl -k -v https://discordapp.com works fine
Except, that's exactly what your traceback says.
aiohttp.client_exceptions.ClientConnectorCertificateError: Cannot connect to host discordapp.com:443 ssl:True
Output of curl -v -k https://discordapp.com: https://paste.pythondiscord.com/ehotajuxel.py
Is this on Mac?
Let's go to a help channel
#help-coconut 15m 58s inactive
#help-orange 15m 45s inactive
@rough sapphire Yeah, reinstalling raspbian-lite fixed the issue. That sucks cause that means that the image was broken.
@dusty shadow I kind of figured as much 😄
Thanks for your help!
No problem, even if it was "Reinstall because your system is borked"!
i guess maybe the ssl certs that python use to validate domains where outdated, it happens, updating the certifi python package could have been enough
@frosty berry Except we did apt update, apt upgrade and apt dist-upgrade
No updates at all were available
i'm talking about the pip package for certifi
note that curl had no issue with the certificate, it's only python which did, so your system's certificates where ok, python, for some reason i don't remember, can't just use these though, so the certifi package solves that problem and allow to stay up to date more easily because it's not tied to system updates.
Wouldn't that fall under python3-certifi ?
python3-certifi/stable,now 2018.8.24-1 all [installed, automatic] root certificates for validating SSL certs and verifying TLS hosts (python3)
It wasn't that great
But it wasn't hot garbage
||Let's travel through time!||
Yeah..
||The methodical, intelligent individual that Thanos was, was completely taken away in Endgame.||
Some things were a bit off I agree
Yeah ||he died pretty quickly||
So yes, hot garbage
Infinity War was fantastic, and I don't even care about superheroes, comics, DC/Marvel, or any of that noise.
Infinity War was maybe fantastic, but endgame was at least great
Maybe not fantastic but come on
It was actualy impressive to see the bad guy win
That's how good Infinity War was
Whereas he's a bumbling idiot in Endgame
Yeah ||they loose for the first time that was pretty impressive indeed||
I would've cried when Ironman died..
Some things were strange I agree
but some asshat on facebook ruined the ending for me in some random spoiler comments
Like ||"I used the stones to destroy the stones" ||
why are you using spoilers lol
I got spoiled too
there's literally no one who hasn't seen the movie already
Because some people could not having seen it yet
fans of the series I mean
me 10 years behind in these movie saga, clicking all the spoilers
In case
@solid pollen Except you can't do that, as the stones are stuck to a specific timeline
Is my message going through?
never going into this if case.. lol
Yeah I got the same feeling like, you destroy the stones that created the world, how does this reality still exist???
2h56
And then if you paid attention to who's contracts were expiring, you knew exactly who was dying.
Under 3h :p
didn't think of that
Someone spoiled me before so..
Which was kind of a cheap "Well, that was easy to figure out."
Someone I call a friend
really didn't think of them as actors when I was watching the movie.. except for that one cringey scene
awww so sad
my favorite scene was Thor meeting his mom
The scene on vormir was a bit stupid too
and in infinity war.. my favorite was groot giving his arm to make the stormbreaker handle.. legit cried
He is a tree..
but.. he gave his arm...
But he can regrow..
That time when Captain ||Planet came in and killed Thanos was great.||
well you know.. I didn't think of it at the time
||america's ass||
Captain Planet?
He's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero
you understand boy.. you're about to take the full force of a star.. it'll kill you
Thor: Only if I die..
yes.. that's what killing you means
Worst writing ever
0/10
it was hilarious XD
This scene was stupid too
wut
Like, why do you need to be right in the middle of the beam
well there was no other way to leverage..
Tree.. help me find the handle
He wasn't going to die anyway, he was protected by ||plot armor||
he cut off his own hand.. for his friend.. T.T
you have to distance yourself from the movie.. and follow the story.. else you miss out on the experience
what was the first super hero movie you ever watched
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)
wut
😄
I thought you were 40 something..
Yep, 100%
let me do some math here
yep.. checks out
escape characters?
do you know.. to recognize the stop sign when self driving cars are learning the image is ____ so there's multiple images of the same stop sign but on different parts of the image so it can actually learn what it is.. I'm forgetting the term for this
do you mean CAPTCHA? there is a common kind of them that uses this technique
@gusty dome I'd rather have subtitles than listen to a dub which almost always sounds really fake/cheap
Some genius just decided to light up trees in green the night to help them grow in the city
Like.. Green is the only color they reject..
😄
You sure they're not just getting ready for Christmas, lol
want to help them grow, let a car run idle next to them the whole day
especially if it's sunny
they are going to love that
Reminds me of kids shining flashlights on solar powered calculators
My mind at 2 am.
Why doesnt history contain that i opened hiatory afterall its also a adress inside browser ?
