I'm tired

graceful basin
#

@buoyant pendant node has a simple float sum about 8x faster. And that is with the overhead of a for loop, as it does not have timeit. Browser (chrome) was about 6x faster

#
var start = new Date()
var simulateTime = 1000

for(var i = 0; i < 1000000000; i++) {
    a = 3.0+3.0;
}

var end = new Date() - start
console.info('Execution time: %dms', end)```

py -m timeit "3.0+3.0"```

buoyant pendant
#

Yeah but you can speed that up in so many ways

#

I agree that just plain python is slower

#

But you just have more options to make it so much faster

#

Lets take something like adding a 1000 element array or something like that. Numpy is in c and uses broadcasting so its blazingly fast. Lets say you want to do some ray tracing, you can run stuff on the gpu!

#

You want jit? Use numba!!

graceful basin
#

I mean, you can just call a C program from python

buoyant pendant
#

I just recently wrote a example for the gpu. It has 214,748,364,800 iterations per second! Each time calculating the euclidian distance and then doing some comparisons. 50fps

#

Thats just amazing

#

I think they both have their areas of expertise

#

I mean thats why they both exist and are num1/2!

graceful basin
#

indeed, though JS is still faster than python. It also has JIT and such. the fact you can call C code from python does not help the interpreter any. When choosing between python and JS, performance is not really a concern anyway.

buoyant pendant
#

True

graceful basin
#

I want to do a comparison to C, but the compiler keeps removing my math

#

I think I got it though

rough sapphire
#

Does anyone know a frontend discord server?

tired osprey
#

of course the fact that you can call C code from python does help the interpreter a lot

#

one of the reasons perl has been and sadly is still quite successful is that it provides a high level abstraction and the ability to glue system level code together via C FFI stuff

modern island
wooden silo
#

@rough sapphire There's a JS discord called SpeakJS, I guess that'd probably be a pretty good place to go for frontend-related issues.

solid pollen
#

@modern island why did you use quotation blocks? That look pretty strange IMO

pseudo crystal
#

I'm also not a huge fan of inline comments for the code style section, you should try using smaller code blocks and then commenting below or above

gentle moss
#

el, and i cannot stress this enough, oh, and even further, el

rough sapphire
#

have you met anyone from Greenland

gentle moss
#

i'm not sure what that has to do with anything

#

but i have known people from greenland

#

🤔

rough sapphire
#

was just thinking.. about how to get there..

#

then it hit me.. I've never met anyone from there

gentle moss
#

their population is preeeetttty small

#

so not a surprise

#

it's like 50k people

rough sapphire
#

so is iceland.. isn't it

#

i've met them

gentle moss
#

no

#

that's 300k

#

and they're more connected to the world

rough sapphire
#

oh

gentle moss
#

and pretty developed

#

not saying greenland isn't developed

#

but iceland has cities and shit

rough sapphire
#

was just about to ask

#

there's probably flights from canada

#

and denmark I guess

gentle moss
#

this is greenlands main city

rough sapphire
#

wow

#

let me see if they list jobs on linkedin

#

iirc there's also some tiny island near the arctic most people don't need a visa for

wooden silo
#

Very Scandinavian-looking architecture.

#

Which I guess makes sense, given that it's Danish territory.

rough sapphire
#

there's 4 job posts listed on linkedin..

#

there's probably a danish site with more.. I guess

#

I wonder how people feel about living there

gentle moss
#

how do people feel about living in the outer hebrides?

#

rural places are everywhere

wooden silo
#

Suicide in Greenland is a significant national social issue. Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world: reports between 1985 and 2012 showed that an average of 83 people in 100,000 committed suicide, more than twice the rate of the second placed country, Lithuania.G...

#

Not that great, apparently.

rough sapphire
#

that's a lot

pseudo crystal
#

I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to Seasonal Affective Disorder

wooden silo
#

The study noted a significant variation of the suicide rate in relation to the season, characterized by peaks in June and troughs in the winter.

rough sapphire
#

wonder why it doesn't affect people in the UK.. I mean it rains all the time :v

#

it's 5 degrees in June.. lol

#

in the north* apparently

#

rest of the place..it's 20

wooden silo
#

Researchers have blamed insomnia caused by incessant daylight.

rough sapphire
#

fair enough

#

it'd be hard to cope

wooden silo
#

I can believe that, but I come from a very northern region, and midnight sun is a fixable problem.

#

You just need good curtains.

rough sapphire
#

in the east it's the morning sun..

#

wakes you up at 4 am

gentle moss
#

i had serious problems sleeping on holiday in norway

#

it never got dark

wooden silo
#

They should subsidize darkening curtains.

gentle moss
#

that was in june or something

#

body way wasn't used to that

wooden silo
#

Yeah, if you don't set up your bedroom correctly it sucks.

gentle moss
#

i blame lemon

#

tbh i should've taken a blindfold

wooden silo
#

Yeah, that helps. Those airplane eyecovers.

gentle moss
#

i wear them during the summer in the UK too

rough sapphire
#

first time I experienced that was in Paris.. had a problem when the sun didn't go down and it was 10 pm lol

gentle moss
#

cause fuck off sun at 6-7am

wooden silo
#

In late june the sun would rise at like 2am in my hometown.

rough sapphire
#

it's like the sun is up by the time you get to sleep XD lol

wooden silo
#

Oftentimes, yes.

#

Especially back in uni.

#

And it never really gets dark.

#

When the sun is down, it's right below the horizon.

pseudo crystal
#

Yeah I'll admit my sleep schedule is pretty messed up 😉

vestal briar
#

I got lost in development, 2 and a bit hours went by and it was 2am by the time I turned the computer off

#

Couldn't get to sleep until 3 though

#

Annnd.. woke up at 7 for school

gentle moss
#

i did ~13 hours of work at home unpaid this week

#

so i think i'll just sit in the office and read twitter

#

¬_¬

solid pollen
#

Or read discord :)

gentle moss
#

don't have to, i absorb it through the electromagnetic spectrum

summer rampart

@gentle moss self bots are against tos

#

oooooooooooooooooooooh

#

is that vomit i taste in my mouth

solid pollen
#

Trump.. In a TV show?

rough sapphire
#

I used to watch the original Apprentice.. it was pretty good

#

then they put celebs in it and ruined it

gentle moss
#

"it was pretty good"

#

i mean, i disagree massively

#

i don't really find a group of vindictive idiots fawning over an overblown practically bankrupt moron for a chance at a pointless job that's usually used as a launching pad for a larger media career

modern island
#

@solid pollen @pseudo crystal thanks for your feedback and suggestions. will improve soon.

rough sapphire
modern island
#

It is higher in the channel history

#

I was at school so couldn’t respond

#

sorry for inconvenience and interrupting :/

rough sapphire
#

on a related note.. I've a knack for predicting election outcomes.. from brazil, phillipines, canada, france, to brexit and boris johnson.. to Trump in 2016.. and I'm predicting he's going to win again in 2020

gentle moss
#

oh no interruption, i was just calling the president of the united states a syphilitic moron

rough sapphire
#

I thought syphillis killed people

gentle moss
#

to be fair i've never seen you attempt to predict anything so i can't judge your statement

#

but an octopus managed to guess the winner of the world cup so

rough sapphire
#

I predicted Boris Johnson cmon lol

gentle moss
#

syphilis rots your brain

#

boris johnson hasn't been through an election

#

he was never elected in a GE

#

it was an internal party vote that was only going to go one way

#

plz

rough sapphire
#

sure, but I said he was going to be next PM way before

gentle moss
#

he's been the next in line for years

#

tory party favourite

solid pollen
#

@rough sapphire predicting French election? Who do you think is going to win the next election?

gentle moss
#

did you predict T.May to not win the 2017 election?

#

how do you think this december general election will go?

rough sapphire
#

no I didn't predict anything related to the UK before Brexit

gentle moss
#

err

rough sapphire
#

I predicted Macron twice

gentle moss
#

2017 is after brexit

rough sapphire
#

next one, I will let you know when I make my prediction

solid pollen
#

Twice?

gentle moss
#

sniff sniff

#

hmmmmm

rough sapphire
#

well the presidential election in 2017.. but something else recently.. uh I forget

solid pollen
#

There was nothing recently

#

Let me think

rough sapphire
#

really.. what did he go up against that lady for

solid pollen
#

This year?

rough sapphire
#

what's her face.. the one they call joan of arc

gentle moss
#

wow

#

you're such an amazing prediction machine

solid pollen
#

Marine le pen? 😄

gentle moss
#

can't even remember candidates

solid pollen
#

Tbh there was 11 candidates i don’t even remember all of them

rough sapphire
#

it's like 11 pm and it's been a long day lol

solid pollen
#

But there is two turn for french elections, he won the first and the second

rough sapphire
#

woke up at like 3:40 am cuz my friend was worried about her roommate being depressed

solid pollen
#

maybe that’s the second thing?

rough sapphire
#

yeah possibly

gentle moss
#

yeah i'm just saying like

solid pollen
#

3:40AM outch

gentle moss
#

you're not an electoral savant

rough sapphire
#

all i'm saying is.. I have good odds.. probably should use this to bet on an election:p

#

what's that website in the uk that lets you do that

gentle moss
#

okay, so what do you think the outcome of the 2019 december general election in the UK is

solid pollen
#

You can bet on election? I should do it for the next one..

gentle moss
#

how do you think the tory policies are going to play with the majority of the country?

rough sapphire
#

I will let you know when I make a prediction

gentle moss
#

don't you think the split votes in marginals are going to be a problem for the major parties?

#

basically you pull something out your ass and it's your prediction, right?

rough sapphire
#

yeah! I saw it last time in 2016.. it was so cool.. the odds were favoring Clinton, if someone had bet on Trump then they would've been a millionaire

gentle moss
#

:P

rough sapphire
#

my ass too tired today

#

ask again later

#

🎱

gentle moss
#

like a shit magic 8 ball

rough sapphire
#

reminds me of something consultants say

undone berry
#

The odds on Trump vs clinton were generally between 5-1 and 10-1

#

not that great

gentle moss
#

plus the problem was people were looking at popularity polls rather than considering how the electoral college would factor in

#

clinton did win, in a first past the post system

#

it's just the electoral college is super fucked so nailing a few smaller states can net you a shit load of vote power

solid pollen
#

Yeah yeah bisk we know the story

gentle moss
#

i believe i read a paper before that suggested it's possible to become president with only ~30% of the vote

undone berry
#

in fact

#

I just remembered

gentle moss
#

the other 70% could vote for your opponent and you could still win

undone berry
#

I won 25£ betting on Trump

#

or it might have been Brexit

solid pollen
#

Brexit.. why people voted for it?

undone berry
#

morons were lied to by newspapers

solid pollen
#

I mean, that’s a hell of a mess

#

Yeah probably

gentle moss
#

it's not even a probably

#

it's just the truth

#

no one had a clue wtf they were voting for or what it meant

#

people who voted to leave all voted leave for different reasons and had different ideas of what leave meant

undone berry
#

bisk. You can't say that. you've got to respect the willothepeople

gentle moss
#

however most of them weren't particularly versed in the integration of UK and EU law

#

and the complexities of 40 years of intertwined legislation

#

BUT NO

#

BANANAS ARE TOO BENDY

#

PASSPORTS WILL BE BLUE AGAIN

#

ALL THE POLISH PEOPLE WILL BE DEPORTED

frosty berry
#

There was just no exit plan, just a crazy pipe dream of an idea

gentle moss
#

exactly

solid pollen
#

Yeah exactly

gentle moss
#

the eurosceptics have had 40 years to come up with a plan

undone berry
#

I've literally never seen an argument for Brexit that seems even slightly valid

gentle moss
#

and they had.....

#

nothing

#

ever since the maastricht treaty there has been no valid reason to exit

#

or any simple method

#

Article 50 was literally designed for like a bat shit crazy country that wanted to go be a fucking crazy nutjob state

#

it wasn't designed to create a smooth exit

solid pollen
#

The brexit is just “hey we are going to get out, because we only want the advantages, but not the disadvantages! So you are going to give use everything we want!”

undone berry
#

its not even that

#

the incredibly pro brexit people

rough sapphire
#

they're deporting the Poles?

undone berry
#

don't want the advantages or the disadvantages

rough sapphire
#

wut

undone berry
#

the advantage is free trade as part of a trading block

#

but pro brexit people don't want to stay in the single market

frosty berry
#

Tip, If you are going to fight with one of the biggest bureaucracy in the world, on legal grounds, come with a plan 😬

gentle moss
#

missed the point there tron

plucky ridge
#

Ease of travel, consistent laws and rules across multiple areas...

gentle moss
#

free trade

plucky ridge
#

There's lots of benefits

gentle moss
#

right to liev and work in any of 28 countries

undone berry
#

and no discernible downsides

#

imo

gentle moss
#

well, sometimes moving regulations forward can be tricky

#

like trying to get better tax avoidance / evasion laws across the entire trading block

plucky ridge
#

True. The bigger something is, the harder it is for things to change

gentle moss
#

and some tiny island keeps vetoing them

solid pollen
#

Yeah and some things to pay.. pfff..

gentle moss
#

PSSST

#

IT'S BRITAIN

#

WE VETOED ALL THE LEGISLATION FOR TAX AVOIDANCE

plucky ridge
#

It's like trying to make a u-turn in a cruise ship

gentle moss
#

us and Lux

undone berry
#

but its incredibly difficult to have meaningful tax laws as a solitary country

#

the only way to do it is part of a big block

gentle moss
#

you end up in a race to the bottom as a solo nation

plucky ridge
#

I'll meet you guys down there....

gentle moss
#

which, i believe, what the rich posh wanker tories want

#

reduce worker's rights

#

reduce taxes on capital gains

#

make flight of capital easier

#

i mean the main tory donors are millionaires

#

flog off public services and have private industry fuck them up

#

etc etc etc

#

hard to do that when you're in the EU, at least some of it

#

specifically worker's rights

vapid bluff
#

you can see this pattern many times in history: power/fame/status/money hungry people convince the population or a solid chunk of it that their problems are to be blamed on X. whether X is or isn't the source of their problems isn't even the point. It's just a diversionary scapegoat and means to power.

plucky ridge
#

Yep

gentle moss
#

"we want to leave the EU so we can improve worker's rights!"

vapid bluff
#

i think brexit is cut from the same cloth

undone berry
#

yeah, thats the best thing about the eu. Workers rights and consumer rights

plucky ridge
#

It'll swing back the other way eventually

gentle moss
#

yet the EU rights are a baseline

#

you can do better than the EU's laws

plucky ridge
#

But we're on the upswing of a really terrible time

gentle moss
#

you just can't do worse

#

give me a giant fucking bin and a JCB

#

i'll dump the entire fucking country into it and shove it into the atlantic

#

it can fuck off to america

plucky ridge
#

Thanks for that

gentle moss
#

i'll set fire to it first

#

like a viking funeral

#

but for toxic waste

#

i'm in a mood today ¬_¬

plucky ridge
#

There there

#

I was in one yesterday, but it was less angry and more really really sad

#

But today I'm starting my morning with Taco Bell

#

So that should keep things on a good path

undone berry
#

The UK already imports too much from the US - but if we need one thing, its more drive thru takeaways

plucky ridge
#

We got boatloads of them here

undone berry
#

Mcdonalds and KFC are the only ones here

plucky ridge
#

Is Mexican food really a thing over there?

undone berry
#

Yeah, but mostly mid range chain restaurants

plucky ridge
#

Makes sense

gentle moss
#

by import stuff i assume you mean culture

#

rather than goods

undone berry
#

yeah

plucky ridge
#

That makes a lot more sense

gentle moss
#

because those don't comply to the decent EU standards

#

i saw a trade person the other day comparing EU / US food regs

#

was funny

#

like orange juice in the US is allowed a certain % of insect / maggot or whatever

plucky ridge
#

Protein

gentle moss
#

it turns out to be about 1 maggot per 250ml of orange juice

#

is allowable

undone berry
#

They also fuck up their eggs

plucky ridge
#

This is making me sad to think about

gentle moss
#

yeah, pretty fucked up innit

undone berry
#

don't worry - the UK is on its way to join you

gentle moss
#

i can't really tell if it doesn't make me sad because i'm clinically depressed or that i've given up giving a fuck

solid pollen
#

Mexian food!

#

sorry i was scrolled up

plucky ridge
#

No worries

#

I'm enjoying a breakfast burrito

gentle moss
#

i made something like that the other day

solid pollen
#

Hmm..

gentle moss
#

bacon, scrambled eggs, diced onions

solid pollen
#

i’m hungry now

plucky ridge
#

Cheese?

gentle moss
#

pretty nice

#

no cheese, but i did use sriracha

plucky ridge
#

Fair trade

undone berry
#

oh god

#

I'm so hungry now

gentle moss
#

i had potato leek and onion soup for lunch

#

made it myself

#

fucking delicious

plucky ridge
#

Ooo, that also sounds good

gentle moss
#

yeah, you just fucking....

#

dice up some potatoes, leeks and onions

#

fry them off a little bit

plucky ridge
#

If I had someone just constantly giving me soup to drink I wouldn't have to worry about my calorie intake...

gentle moss
#

throw in a shit load of vegetable stock

#

let it bubble away

plucky ridge
#

I can drink things all day but actually eating just...

gentle moss
#

pepper pepper pepper it up for seasoning

plucky ridge
#

Pepper corn or like bell pepper

gentle moss
#

pepper corn

plucky ridge
#

Nice

gentle moss
#

"pepper pepper pepper" is from You Suck At Cooking

#

good youtube channel

plucky ridge
#

Gotta loves those

gentle moss
#

short one

#

half jokes, half real recipe advice

undone berry
#

I feel like I can almost smell the cooking garlic

solid pollen
#

I love the part about pasta cooking time

gentle moss
#

:D

#

that channel is well worth a watch

#

even just for the funnies

#

this is one of the good funnies

plucky ridge
#

How many fingers is he missing by the end?

solid pollen
#

(And they have subtitles could it be better? 😄 )

undone berry
#

chopping onions is like the only thing with cooking that I can actually do

plucky ridge
#

I can make a pretty decent veggie fried rice

#

Pancakes I can do...

sand goblet
#

I do a lot of cooking

#

You guys should do more

solid pollen
#

I can do eggs

undone berry
#

I can't face the washing up

sand goblet
#

:>

solid pollen
#

Appart from that

plucky ridge
#

Did you have a stroke for a second?

sand goblet
#

No, autocorrect

plucky ridge
#

Fair enough

#

@undone berry Then you need to invoke the old code: "I cooked, you clean"

undone berry
#

But then you have to do it both ways and wash their stuff up

plucky ridge
#

Nah that's when you hide in the bathroom

undone berry
#

I'm just gonna carry on living off chicken nuggets and cheese sandwhiches

#

and die at 40

plucky ridge
#

40 is being generous if you're tossing chicken nuggets in there

#

35 tops

#

Oh, so I've started putting two tea bags in my mug. One black tea and one green tea. It's actually pretty good, and I really like my tea absurdly strong.

#

And on top of that, the green tea balances out the amount of caffeine so I don't get the anxiety or the shakes

gentle moss
#

hah

undone berry
#

how does it balance out?

gentle moss
#

you think chicken nuggets and cheese sandwiches are a way to kill yourself early

#

here

undone berry
#

surely its still just as much caffeine

gentle moss
#

hold my bottles of vodka

plucky ridge
#

There's a specific thing in tea that helps your body process or neutralize caffeine

undone berry
#

yeah tbf, I might eat like shit, but I don't smoke or drink so I should make it to like 50 before the heart disease kicks in

plucky ridge
#

Green tea happens to have more of it than black tea

undone berry
#

oh sure

gentle moss
#

i smoked heavily for about 8-9 years

#

drank like a fish too

#

stopped that now though

plucky ridge
#

Proud of you

#

Like legit

#

That's not an easy path to kick

gentle moss
#

i still have a nicotine addiction, but i vape now

#

better for me

#

and the booze was just a depressive phase type thing

#

was in a sucky place

#

hard to get out of the spiral when you're in it

plucky ridge
#

"Better" is rather deceptive

gentle moss
#

i look back and i'm like "shit... that was mad"

#

well i mean it is better

undone berry
#

"Better" is rather deceptive howso? There is no evidence that vaping is bad for you

gentle moss
#

i don't hock up black tar

#

and i can smell stuff now

#

the USA has vaping problems charlie

#

black market shit and bad FDA regs

undone berry
#

also you probably don't stink like cigarettes

gentle moss
#

well...

#

i never stank of cigarettes

plucky ridge
#

They're both not great for you. Better than smoking yes, but still not better than not smoking or vaping

gentle moss
plucky ridge
#

They've shown that vaping decreases the oxygen absorption to your blood, more than cigs do. But I mean there really isn't a healthy nicotine product. They've all got adverse effects in the long term

gentle moss
#

US study?

#

not that i'm dissing the study

#

i just know there are regulatory differences between EU and US

plucky ridge
#

Honestly unsure. I might even be misquoting

#

I read it quite a while ago

undone berry
plucky ridge
#

I'll stick with just not using either

#

I don't need that extra expense

#

And considering the people I do know that vape are doing it near constantly

#

Like it's a security blanket

undone berry
#

I do find the people that are just doing it constantly incredibly annoying

plucky ridge
#

They can't put the damn thing down

gentle moss
#

for me it's the nicotine addiction, the habit of having a drag and the feeling of stuff in my lungs

#

i hate those robo-dick style vapes though

#

the weird huge battery pack guys

plucky ridge
#

Yerp.

gentle moss
#

how am i supposed to play quake and vape if it's a giant robot penis

plucky ridge
#

But I really feel like the comparison should be to vaping vs not vaping rather than vaping vs smoking

undone berry
#

I think vaping is an annoying habit for someone to have, but I also think its probably not meaningfully harmful

gentle moss
#

if i cannot use the device like this

#

i will not use the device

plucky ridge
#

Other than the potential of second hand nicotine addition, you're likely right

#

I'm just overly paranoid

gentle moss
#

my mouse mat was disgusting when i smoked

#

for obvious reasons

plucky ridge
#

I've tried smoking and I don't seem to have an addiction to it.

gentle moss
#

yeah, i don't like cigarettes at all

plucky ridge
#

Or like, I can go years between

#

Well even when I enjoyed a cigar or so

#

It's just not one of the hooks for me

gentle moss
#

never liked cigarettes really

plucky ridge
#

Which is surprising, since there were addiction issues in my family. My aunt and my uncle are a part of AA. Granted they've been sober for a long long time, well before I really can remember. But that does mean it's in the bloodline somewhere

#

So I'm always surprised when I don't get caught up in it, you know?

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

i think it's more of a nurture rather than nature thing though

#

however there is so much exposure to that stuff as you grow up etc

#

really difficult to pin point etc

#

i think it can often be a symptom of a deeper problem

plucky ridge
#

There are some people that are more genetically prone to it, but it probably also helped that I've had to take medication for nearly all my life to help with my ADHD and depression and stuff so I understood the importance of control and the discipline of taking stuff on time and all that

#

So it might be both, who knows

gentle moss
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

i've just been informed that a bunch of work i did to create an automated AWS S3 Glacier vault backup system for some data was pointless

#

as they didn't realise they were already backing up alll the data with another service

plucky ridge
#

Gotta love it

gentle moss
#

can't delete a vault full of items either

#

so now i have to write something to remove all the items from the vault

plucky ridge
#

Wait you can't?

gentle moss
#

nope

#

vault has to be empty to be deleted

plucky ridge
#

Oh oh oh oh oh

gentle moss
#

27,000 items

#

I have a request

#

Since it's a Glacier, would you name the script "flamethrower"?

gentle moss
#

hahaha

#

not a bad idea

plucky ridge
#

Yeeesssss

gentle moss
#

will have to rename the whole project

#

smh

plucky ridge
#

Not necessarily. It can just be a delete function/module of the project

#

Another acceptable name would be "kill_it_with_fire"

gentle moss
#

plays a short clip from Talking Heads

plucky ridge
#

Hell yes

#

Oh huh

gentle moss
#

not sure i want to go that far

plucky ridge
#

Okay so I was just thinking "Man, I wish I could still show what song I was listening to even with my custom status."

#

Then I clicked on my name

gentle moss
#

haha

plucky ridge
#

Turns out, it does do double duty

gentle moss
#

so it does

plucky ridge
#

Good on them

gentle moss
#

now the question is

#

do i actually spend the last 2 hours of my work day writing this myself

#

orrrrr

#

do i just use someone elses script

#

one makes me seem productive

#

the other makes me seem efficient

gentle moss
#

okay wow

#

this is not a simple process

plucky ridge
#

There has to be an easier way

gentle moss
#

as in just running stage one of the process can take 3-5 hours

plucky ridge
#

It seems silly there isn't one

gentle moss
#

since you need to get data on every item in the vault

#

and glacier isn't designed for fast recovery of info

#

so just getting the id's for all the items in the vault willt ake hours

#

i think once that's complete then deleting them is a pretty quick enumeration process

plucky ridge
#

You're doing it via the REST API right?

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

the failure i made in my upload script was not storing the json results of each upload

#

if i'd have done that then this would be a quicker task

plucky ridge
#

So you're going to have to query it just to find out what's in there, yeah that's... going to be painful

gentle moss
#

seems mad you can't just have a "delete this vault, no, yes, really. delete this whole vault. nope, i promise i want to delete everything in here."

plucky ridge
#

Right?

#

That's my thought

#

At least from the console

#

Maybe not via request or command line but at least let me do that from the GUI

gentle moss
#

i guess it just stores them all as objects or something that are related

#

it's like a big truck you just dump stuff on

#

not a series of tubes

plucky ridge
#

Nice spin on that

gentle moss
#

step 1: get inventory (hours)
step 2: check status of job until it's complete
step 3: dump the json to a file
step 4: iterate through 27,000 items and delete them

plucky ridge
#

My heart goes out to you

gentle moss
#

time to look up the costings for this

#

~$3.60

plucky ridge
#

PFFF

#

Wait really?

gentle moss
#

the requests are free

#

but the vault has only been live for 5 days

#

so it's an early deletion fee per gb

plucky ridge
#

Fair enough

gentle moss
#

i think i will definitely write that flamethrower function

#

i never want to manually run this task again

plucky ridge
#

HA

sinful turtle
gentle moss
#

is that a question orrr

#

what

sinful turtle
#

kinda

#

I'm really confused why it's 404ing

#

I made a github pages thing earlier and it worked instantly

#

and now it isn't

#

nvm it's working now for some reason

plucky ridge
#

Were you not logged in or possibly it was just a hiccup on their side

sinful turtle
#

after looking around, it seems that it takes around 20 mins to update the website after you make changes

#

(although it took 40 mins for mine to update)

plucky ridge
#

Which could be a matter of too much traffic on the site or too many changes happening at once so they just had to defer it until they could process it or what not

sinful turtle
#

yeah

#

I've started learning some p5.js for web animation stuff

plucky ridge
#

The gyrating after they've effectively stopped bouncing is messing with my eyes

sinful turtle
#

oh yeah

#

I should probably fix that

sinful turtle
#

actually

#

I don't really know how I'd fix that

#
    this.y = this.y + this.yVel
    if (this.y > height - 25) {
      this.yVel = this.yVel * -1
    } else if (this.yVel > -2 && this.yVel < 0) {
      this.yVel = this.yVel * -1
    } else if (this.yVel > 0) {
      this.yVel = this.yVel * 1.07
    } else {
      this.yVel = this.yVel * 0.9
    }

my bouncing code is this (yes I know this is terrible but it works)

#

and if I try to add in a check for that it ruins the bouncing

plucky ridge
#

Yeah I'm not sure, honestly. I never learned how to deal with making a physics engine like that or anything

#

So much I still need to learn...

gentle moss
#

wanna learn boto3 and build this flamethrower for me?

#

fuck sake, i wanna build this as my own personal project

#

but i DO NOT want to incur AWS fees

#

rofl

plucky ridge
#

Dude it's like

#

$4 of fees

#

That's what you estimated, right?

gentle moss
#

yeah but i want to expand my project to cover much larger data sets

#

i think the most i could see our customers throwing up is maybe 10TB

#

but i want it to be able to handle any quantity of data

jagged fog
#

won't AWS auto scale up in that case

#

and bill you more

#

you're billed by the usage

gentle moss
#

not quite

#

trust me

#

AWS billing is a fucking mine field

plucky ridge
#

That's how the Bezos gets the monies

gentle moss
#

getting S3 bucket retentions wrong could land you with something like $100 bill for a 10GB download

#

the annoying thing is

#

if you do it right

#

it's the CHEAPEST storage you can imagine

#

i've been very tempted to use glacier for full backups of my important data

#

chance of losing the data? low

#

if i do? $200 to recover it aint shit.

#

fyi @jagged fog Glacier is literally tape storage

#

that's why it can take 3-5 hours to recover data

#

they literally have robots moving tapes around a warehouse datacentre

plucky ridge
#

I was about to say I thought tape storage had a relatively short shelf life but then realized that it's no different than hard drives in that regard

#

The only ones that don't degrade with time are optical medias

#

Or rather, don't degrade nearly as quickly.

#

Centuries rather than decades if stored correctly

#

(I think. Might just be talking out of my ass)

When you publish a project to GitHub without a license people are still allowed to fork your project due to GitHub's forking agreement: https://help.github.com/en/github/site-policy/github-terms-of-service
"By setting your repositories to be viewed publicly, you agree to allow others to view and "fork" your repositories (this means that others may make their own copies of Content from your repositories in repositories they control)."

My question would be: Am I allowed to maintain a fork on GitHub? It will be clearly visible that my fork is a fork. (I will not reupload the code to GitHub so the fork relationship isn't visible.)
GitHub seems to be giving me implicit permission by letting me fork. Furthermore they explicitely give me the permission since it is clearly stated in their ToS. And GitHub gives me implicit permission by letting me add changes to a fork which as far as I can see does not clearly state in their ToS.
GitHub says the following in that regard:
"If you set your pages and repositories to be viewed publicly, you grant each User of GitHub a nonexclusive, worldwide license to use, display, and perform Your Content through the GitHub Service and to reproduce Your Content solely on GitHub as permitted through GitHub's functionality (for example, through forking)."
Another one of GitHub's functionality is adding commits to a fork. If interpreted that way I'm within my rights to modify the code on the fork and add my own personal spin to it.

And let's asumme I cannot contact the owner to make him clarify the licensing agreement (e.g. giving me explicit right or adding a FOSS license) because he is just unreachable/doesn't respond/whatever.

sand goblet
#

All code uploaded to GH is licensed so that GH's services can function, yes

#

so you can fork

manic patio
#

My question is more if I'm allowed to add code changes to a fork.

#

that's what I meant with maintaining a fork. It will have my own changes on it.

sand goblet
#

I think so, yeah

rough sapphire
#

what license should you use if you don't want people trying to use your code for profit

solid pollen
sand goblet
#

@rough sapphire well if you have a license like that then your software is not open source

#

there's this commons clause thing but you'll be shat on for using it

manic patio
#

Choosealicense says:
"If you find software that doesn’t have a license, that generally means you have no permission from the creators of the software to use, modify, or share the software. Although a code host such as GitHub may allow you to view and fork the code, this does not imply that you are permitted to use, modify, or share the software for any purpose."

So I am not allowed to add changes to a fork. Bit of a contradiction of what I'm seeing when I read the ToS. 🤷
But I guess it's true that I'm not allowed to execute the source code. So I'm keeping my fingers from projects without a license.

solid pollen
#

Yeah no OSS approved forbid commercial use

rough sapphire
#

what's commons clause

sand goblet
#

exactly what it sounds like

#

added to an open-source license, it can make the license no longer open-source by forbidding commercial use

solid pollen
#

And call it the tron license

sand goblet
#

fyi I refuse to use commons clause projects

manic patio
#

I sometimes see people adding a license that allow commercial, for profit use and private use but then they write in their README.md that they do not approve people running a separate instance or an instance that generates revenue.
Am I right in saying that the provided LICENSE is what counts?

sand goblet
#

yeah, the LICENSE is what will hold up in court

#

there's a reason they're worded the way they are

#

and it isn't to make them hard to read

rough sapphire
#

I don't see what's wrong with forbidding commercial use

sand goblet
#

It goes against the spirit and intention of open source

rough sapphire
#

but it's still free

sand goblet
#

The whole point is that you're not limiting what people can do with your software

rough sapphire
#

hmm

sand goblet
#

I also can't really think of a good reason to prevent commercial use

rough sapphire
#

hmm something to think about

solid pollen
#

Open source mean, open it. To everyone

#

Including comercial use

sand goblet
#

anyone, anywhere, for anything

#

yep

rough sapphire
#

I was thinking they repackage something open source with some minor add ons and sell it.. but then if it sells it might be necessary..

sand goblet
#

well what's wrong with repackaging it?

rough sapphire
#

ok fair point

sand goblet
#

do people get something out of it being repackaged?

#

if you don't want someone to do something and then sell it, do it yourself

manic patio
#

If commercial use was forbidden in a library it'd mean that if your giant project that relies on a tiny functionality of that library you'd be not allowed to monetize your project.

sand goblet
#

yeah

manic patio
#

If you are working on a giant project and you don't want other people to compete with you you shouldn't make it open source.

sand goblet
#

even gnu licenses, which are considered libre (free as in speech), allow commercial use

rough sapphire
#

ok I understand better now

now i have a 10mb json file full of ~25k file descriptors

why the fuck did i never use logging before

#

fuck me that thing

#

urrrrrggggg

#

i swear they designed this to be incredibly tricky to use to stop idiots throwing shit in / out of glacier all the damn time

pine vector
#

data modelling is such an exercise for me. my brain just runs off on each field's logic branch, and i get into a morass of circular thoughts. 😵

gentle moss
#

most annoying one i had to look at was a warehouse database

pine vector
#

hehe. i have too much experience in that area...its probably trained me in horrible ways.

gentle moss
#

the guy who originally built the db was a friggin idiot

#

didn't use any relations whatsoever

#

fudged it all in php

#

he'd also never worked in a warehouse

but i mean i'm not that hot at this stuff and i'm pretty sure i know that you need to have some relations between your locations and products table

pine vector

#

the fucking muggins who made it in the first place was "head hunted" from us by a financial firm

#

it's actually a debt / loan financing company for agencies

#

vestal briar
#

You sure he wasn't just commiting corprate espionage ;)

gentle moss
#

they've spent like £2m on this web portal for agencies to handle all their own employees / all sorts

#

when if they'd done what we suggested, hired a team of 5 good developers in house for 2 years, the product would be done by now

#

and would work on more than a 1080p screen

#

:D

pine vector
#

lol. hardcoded dimensions? nice. its like 1998 all over again.

gentle moss
#

that's their outsourced russian development team

pine vector
#

This site is best viewed at 800x600

gentle moss
#

pretty funny, the IT manager of that company has been complaining since the inception of the project

#

just the other week he wrote a ~100 page report on everything that's broken

#

how much time / effort it'll cost to fix

#

and the CEO / Managers of other departments are just ignoring that shit and order more features for an already broken platform

#

:D:D

#

they've had 3 "launch parties"

pine vector
#

"requirements doc? nah...we'll just feed you features as you go. it'll be cheaper."

gentle moss
#

it was supposed to be complete 2 years ago and have cost £500k

#

we actually quoted them decent outsourced developers for about £250k

#

team of 4 or 5 could crank that app out in a year

#

"project manager? why do we need one of them?"

#

project goes to shit

vestal briar
#

There's this "cybercenturian" competition i'm in, it's just some sysadmin tasks

gentle moss

great for us though as we put markup on it

pine vector
#

its like they don't even teach BCAs in business school...

gentle moss

so now they had to pay the developers to make it work on other size screens AND in the mean time dish out for shit loads of screens

#

woop woop

#

gentle moss
#

i'm agonizing over log message formats

#

i feel like they shouldn't have a fullstop at the end of them

or "too many words, less plz"

pine vector
#

lol. i am actually unrolling my previous log format in this data model...

#

the code refactor is going to be just as annoying.

gentle moss

dusty shadow
#

hmm, nope. curl -k -v https://discordapp.com works fine

rough sapphire
#

Except, that's exactly what your traceback says.

@rough sapphire Yeah, reinstalling raspbian-lite fixed the issue. That sucks cause that means that the image was broken.

rough sapphire
#

@dusty shadow I kind of figured as much 😄

dusty shadow
#

Thanks for your help!

rough sapphire
#

No problem, even if it was "Reinstall because your system is borked"! tw

frosty berry
#

i guess maybe the ssl certs that python use to validate domains where outdated, it happens, updating the certifi python package could have been enough

rough sapphire
#

@frosty berry Except we did apt update, apt upgrade and apt dist-upgrade

#

No updates at all were available

frosty berry
#

i'm talking about the pip package for certifi

#

note that curl had no issue with the certificate, it's only python which did, so your system's certificates where ok, python, for some reason i don't remember, can't just use these though, so the certifi package solves that problem and allow to stay up to date more easily because it's not tied to system updates.

rough sapphire
#

Wouldn't that fall under python3-certifi ?

#

python3-certifi/stable,now 2018.8.24-1 all [installed, automatic] root certificates for validating SSL certs and verifying TLS hosts (python3)

#

@rough sapphire endgame was great

#

A bit long to start I agree

rough sapphire
#

It wasn't that great

solid pollen
#

But it wasn't hot garbage

rough sapphire
#

||Let's travel through time!||

solid pollen
#

Yeah..

rough sapphire
#

||The methodical, intelligent individual that Thanos was, was completely taken away in Endgame.||

solid pollen
#

Some things were a bit off I agree

rough sapphire
#

||"Oh I die? Lmao nice"||

#

I mean, come on...

solid pollen
#

Yeah ||he died pretty quickly||

rough sapphire
#

So yes, hot garbage

#

Infinity War was fantastic, and I don't even care about superheroes, comics, DC/Marvel, or any of that noise.

solid pollen
#

Infinity War was maybe fantastic, but endgame was at least great

#

Maybe not fantastic but come on

rough sapphire
#

It was actualy impressive to see the bad guy win

#

That's how good Infinity War was

#

Whereas he's a bumbling idiot in Endgame

solid pollen
#

Yeah ||they loose for the first time that was pretty impressive indeed||

rough sapphire
#

I would've cried when Ironman died..

solid pollen
#

Some things were strange I agree

rough sapphire
#

but some asshat on facebook ruined the ending for me in some random spoiler comments

solid pollen
#

Like ||"I used the stones to destroy the stones" ||

rough sapphire
#

why are you using spoilers lol

solid pollen
#

I got spoiled too

rough sapphire
#

there's literally no one who hasn't seen the movie already

solid pollen
#

Because some people could not having seen it yet

rough sapphire
#

fans of the series I mean

frosty berry
#

me 10 years behind in these movie saga, clicking all the spoilers

solid pollen
#

In case

rough sapphire
#

@solid pollen Except you can't do that, as the stones are stuck to a specific timeline

#

Is my message going through?

#

never going into this if case.. lol

solid pollen
#

Yeah I got the same feeling like, you destroy the stones that created the world, how does this reality still exist???

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, idk

#

well they had the keep the movie under 3 hours.. didn't they

solid pollen
#

2h56

rough sapphire
#

And then if you paid attention to who's contracts were expiring, you knew exactly who was dying.

solid pollen
#

Under 3h :p

rough sapphire
#

didn't think of that

solid pollen
#

Someone spoiled me before so..

rough sapphire
#

Which was kind of a cheap "Well, that was easy to figure out."

solid pollen
#

Someone I call a friend

rough sapphire
#

really didn't think of them as actors when I was watching the movie.. except for that one cringey scene

#

awww so sad

#

my favorite scene was Thor meeting his mom

solid pollen
#

The scene on vormir was a bit stupid too

rough sapphire
#

and in infinity war.. my favorite was groot giving his arm to make the stormbreaker handle.. legit cried

solid pollen
#

He is a tree..

rough sapphire
#

but.. he gave his arm...

solid pollen
#

But he can regrow..

rough sapphire
#

That time when Captain ||Planet came in and killed Thanos was great.||

#

#

#

#

Worst writing ever

#

solid pollen
#

This scene was stupid too

rough sapphire
#

wut

solid pollen
#

Like, why do you need to be right in the middle of the beam

rough sapphire
#

well there was no other way to leverage..

solid pollen
#

Just.. Move a bit on the left

#

Or fix the broken part

#

Yes there was!

rough sapphire
#

Tree.. help me find the handle

#

He wasn't going to die anyway, he was protected by ||plot armor||

#

he cut off his own hand.. for his friend.. T.T

#

you have to distance yourself from the movie.. and follow the story.. else you miss out on the experience

#

what was the first super hero movie you ever watched

#

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)

#
