Hmm, maybe

#

Ok imma stop with that idea

fallen sparrow
#

What kind of 'cheap' are we talking about? Makes a big difference e.g 100 to 200 to 300

sand goblet
#

I don't have an exact range at the moment since I'm not the one paying for it

rough sapphire
sand goblet
#

It's going to be a Christmas thing for my grandfather, two sonos speakers

#

I was thinking the play:5 and the sonos one

rough sapphire
#

play:5?

sand goblet
#

One of the sonos speakers

#

We have one of those, it's big and sounds great

rough sapphire
#

Ah, gotcha

fallen sparrow
#

Wow it's so odd seeing bezels that size nowadays

rough sapphire
#

I never got into bluetooth speakers

sand goblet
#

Haha

rough sapphire
#

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

sand goblet
#

It's not Bluetooth

#

That's one of the things they expressly didn't want to add

#

They're WiFi speakers that play music on their own and are controlled by an app

rough sapphire
#

Oh no

sand goblet
#

So you link your Spotify, speakers now play Spotify

#

Or your bandcamp, plex, soundcloud, whatever

rough sapphire
#

I was just ranting to the SO about that the other day

#

How everything has an app now

sand goblet
#

Well I dunno how else you'd control these

#

Bluetooth is terrible for audio so I see why they did it

rough sapphire
#

How is Bluetooth terrible for audio?

sand goblet
#

Plus you'll never have a call with your mom blasting over the powerful subwoofer

rough sapphire
#

Bluetooth headphones do it just fine

sand goblet
#

Compression mostly

#

It's well known that sound quality suffers with Bluetooth

rough sapphire
#

I mean, I don't really think it's that big of a deal.

sand goblet
#

It is when you have a speaker setup as high quality as this

rough sapphire
#

It's the same thing as vinyl technically sounds better than CDs, but you don't see vinyl being released as crazy as it was in the 80's.

sand goblet
rough sapphire
#

I just don't see a reason to add another app for a speaker.

sand goblet
#

It's less of a speaker and more of an actual media system

rough sapphire
#

I mean, I don't see the reason to add another app for a lot of places.

#

My argument is that unless it's something that I'll use quite frequently, and isn't tracking me, then sure - I'll use it, no problem.

sand goblet
#

Like, you can group speakers together or pair mono speakers into stereo, for example

#

The One has alexa built in

rough sapphire
#

But when you've got the Walmart/McDonald's/Burger King/AT&T/whatever else there is, app, and it's for 5% off this, or 10% off this, it doesn't matter.

sand goblet
#

Also don't you listen to music?

rough sapphire
#

I mean, am I gonna throw $50 at Burger King to get 10% off ( $5! )? That's just silly.

#

Sure I do. I've got a pair of Bluetooth headphones too.

sand goblet
#

Headphones have nothing on a decent speaker setup though

#

They kind of suck for parties too

#

Haha

edgy magnet
#

Did I just see caravan palace

sand goblet
#

Yup

edgy magnet
#

Good music taste I approve

rough sapphire
#

I don't see the reason for an app, honestly. If they're speakers, you're going to be listening to them in the same area you are.

sand goblet
#

Most speakers don't have a screen

rough sapphire
#

So it just involves you grabbing your phone and switching the song ( Smart TV, PS4 Spotify integration, whatever else you use ), or physically walking up and changing the volume on whatever it is you're listening on.

#

Heck, you probably won't even need to do that. If you're using a smart tv or the like, grab the remote lol.

#

They won't need a screen. Most speakers should be connected to some kind of system that allows you to change the volume. ๐Ÿ˜„

sand goblet
#

That makes no sense

#

Why would you want an entirely separate system for that

#

Why would you want to go through the login process for all your accounts on a speaker?

rough sapphire
#

Plus, to add to the reasoning, the S in IoT stands for security. Connecting speakers up to an app is just asking for trouble.

#

What?

#

Why would you want to go through the login process for all your devices on a speaker?

sand goblet
#

Accounts, my net died

rough sapphire
#

Why would I have to edit anything to do with my accounts?

#

They're speakers.

sand goblet
#

Because it's a player?

#

I'm not home so I can't show you the full list but I'd like you to find an amplifier that can easily play from as many services as sonos can

rough sapphire
#

I'm talking about a simple speaker setup. A basic system with a volume knob that connects to speakers.

sand goblet
#

Or even anything on your phone that can make a playlist of songs from more than one service

rough sapphire
#

What the speakers are connected to doesn't matter.

sand goblet
#

I mean, yeah, it does

#

That's the point of sonos, or one of them

rough sapphire
#

That's the thing, is it's not a matter of "Look at how many services these speakers provide.", it's more a matter of shifting away from the speakers themselves and what's connected to them - like a smart tv, a PS4, or whatever else. You could also just buy some cheap bluetooth speakers ( Less than $50? ) and be done with it.

sand goblet
#

There's nothing connected directly to the sonos

#

Aside from the power

#

Or an ethernet if your setup suits that

rough sapphire
#

Also, what's the price point on these things?

sand goblet
#

Not cheap

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, another reason I'd suggest Bluetooth speakers ๐Ÿ˜„

sand goblet
#

Hey man, if I'm at a party I don't want to leave my phone lying around

#

If I'm going for a piss my phone is coming with me

#

In your case, so is the music

#

Haha

rough sapphire
#

Eh?

#

Leave the Bluetooth speakers in the living room, and you can bring your phone with you.

#

Bluetooth reaches pretty far

sand goblet
#

Does your house have like paper walls or something

#

Well okay, I guess not everyone has concrete walls like we do

rough sapphire
#

๐Ÿ‘€

#

Yeah, definitely don't have concrete

sand goblet
#

Also how do you solve the problem of playing on multiple speakers?

rough sapphire
#

I've never needed to do that

sand goblet
#

Considering they'd be in different parts of the house, too, so you can't wire them in

rough sapphire
#

they'd?

sand goblet
#

The multiple speakers

#

You couldn't even use two phones, Spotify mandates only one output at once

rough sapphire
#

For a more professional setup, they'd be wired and have a central location for the music. But I'm also arguing for a $50 ( or cheaper ) Bluetooth speaker - while you're arguing for a speaker setup 10 times the price.

#

So I would hope a $499+ speaker setup was better.

sand goblet
#

Yep, a professional sounding setup with a central hub for the music

#

Low power consumption when not in use as well

#

They do have portable Bluetooth ones too, but eh

rough sapphire
#

I just can't say that I've ever wanted to spend $499, let alone half that, for speakers. Always been headphones for me.

sand goblet
#

I don't really like headphones for music

#

I use them when I'm on voice chat

#

I have Bluetooth earphones and a Bluetooth speaker for when I'm out or at work

#

But I'd really rather use a proper speaker

#

Six drivers, six amplifiers, 3 tweeters and 3 woofers

#

They do other stuff as well like sound bars and solutions for in-wall speakers, or adapters for analogue sources

sand goblet
#

Right then, let's see if the guy sent me the DNS details..

#

"transfer away please"

#

Fine by me!

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/10/30/amazon_prime_payment_page_ux_badness/

Amazon has been rapped by Britain's advertising watchdog after its baffling online payments page duped customers into signing up for an Prime subscription as they tried to pay for goods.

The trick, which falls squarely within the online category of "dark UX", was designed to confuse Amazon users into signing up for the ยฃ8/month (ยฃ96/year) service.

Seven people complained after being confronted with the confusing payment options โ€“ and now Amazon has been ordered not to display the misleading boxes again.

#

I just finished Kingdom Hearts 3 and all I feel is empty inside

#

The last part of the game has left me unsatisfied and just.... numb

rough sapphire
#

I mean, it's Kingdom Hearts

#

Did you expect anything different

plucky ridge
#

Honestly, before the shit ton of filler games, when it was just 1 and 2, yes

#

But there were just so many loose ends to tie up, and so many people we're supposed to care about

#

And the main characters of the series just took the back seat

#

And the ending battles were just.... unfulfilling

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, sounds about right.

#

I took one look at the series and went nope

plucky ridge
#

Don't get me wrong, the series is a blast to play. It just got a severe case of Square-Enix overly convoluted story syndrome

#

And KH3's game mechanics are the cleanest and most satisfying of the whole series. But jesus.. The ending just fell flat on its face for me

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, if an ending is garbage - there's no reason to play the game.

plucky ridge
#

Eh that's debatable

rough sapphire
#

It's like Borderlands 2 and how ||it ended with a "THERE'S GONNA BE ANOTHER GAME!". Made me not care for the series at all, and haven't touched it since.||

plucky ridge
#

I've played some fantastic games with endings that just eh

#

The new God of War for example

rough sapphire
#

I never cared for the GoW series, either.

plucky ridge
#

Oh it's nothing like the old ones

#

It's an adventure, it's great

#

The ending is just sort of weak. Not discouraging like KH3's was for me, but just kind of "oh cool"

#

But that whole game was worth it

rough sapphire
#

I've seen what the Switch has to offer, but outside of LoZ: BoTW, there's nothing I really care for.

#

A game has to be amazing for me to really care about it

plucky ridge
#

So long as there's enough fun that I feel like I got my money's worth, I'm good.

rough sapphire
#

For example, the re-done version of Link's Awakening looks like Link is looking straight into your soul, and the aesthetic is all wrong.

plucky ridge
#

I'll agree with you there. I played the crap out of that game when I was a kid. But it just looks.... wrong with the style they chose

rough sapphire
#

I was so aggitated by that game too. ||IT WAS ALL A DREAM. I WAS DEVASTATED||

#

||But then again, it's literally called Link's Awakening.||

plucky ridge
#

I think I was more bothered by "So wait, he's just sitting on a plank? He's going to get eaten by a shark, isn't he."

rough sapphire
#

I more like Oracle of Seasons/Ages

#

Was neat how they intertwined the two as well

plucky ridge
#

I feel like I enjoyed the whole package of Awakening more, but I certainly still loved the Oracles

rough sapphire
#

Link To The Past will always be my favorite

plucky ridge
#

Link Between Worlds was a solid homage

rough sapphire
#

Link Between Worlds was trash poorly done, and the ending ||was lackluster and rushed.||

plucky ridge
#

What parts were poorly done in your eyes?

rough sapphire
#

Well, the Tower of Hera being a colloseum is great, unless you realize what it is fairly far in the game and the cash is useless because you've gotten the money in other ways.

#

The renting system isn't that great, as you can rent things you don't even need yet

plucky ridge
#

It was good for paying off the rest of the items

#

And yeah, the renting was a little dumb, but I feel like they finally took a chance with something after so long of serving the same formula to us

rough sapphire
#

The octorok children was poorly setup, and had you running around looking for 100 useless things for upgrades you should have gotten another way.

plucky ridge
#

I'm fine with them trying a few new things and some of them not being overly great

rough sapphire
#

I enjoyed they brought back the assistant on the broom, but she didn't really do anything.

plucky ridge
#

Did she have to?

#

The 2d ones have always been about the adventure and not as much the characters

rough sapphire
#

You find out ||she's a sage||, and was a simple replacement for the bird. You also didn't get the ability to run into her like in older games she was introduced in, which would have been a great way to get upgrades to some of your items.

#

Just seemed rushed, and more like Minish Cap.

plucky ridge
#

I feel the opposite. There felt like there was a lot of love and detail that went into it

rough sapphire
#

But then again, I'm the type of person that thinks Ocarina of Time was trash and was only a 3D version of Link To The Past.

gentle moss
#

yup

lime gazelle
#

I've tried, with guitar too

gentle moss
#

i have been trying to teach myself piano a bit more over the last 2 years

#

still shit but better

wooden silo
#

I know you've tried, but that's irrelevant to whether you're able to learn it or not.

lime gazelle
#

did you have any problems with your left hand bisk?

wooden silo
#

I mean, I can try to run my code and get a syntax error. That doesn't prove that my code will never ever run.

lime gazelle
#

I know what you mena GWunuFuelUp it's just hella discouraging

plucky ridge
#

Take every small step forward as a victory

gentle moss
#

i have problems having independence between my two hands

#

but last year i couldn't do a walking bass line with some chords on top and now i kind of can

#

with a lot of effort

lime gazelle
#

I can't even play solo left GWeniSadNeko

plucky ridge
#

I have a hard time keeping my hands and my feet in sync

#

I can't do a drum kit because of it

lime gazelle
#

Like I've heard about the approach "practice both hands as if they're two different pieces"

#

but the left just won't budge

plucky ridge
#

Start it really slow

gentle moss
#

practice

plucky ridge
#

Like half speed

lime gazelle
#

@plucky ridge GWeniSadNeko drums are v cool!

plucky ridge
#

Then slowly build it up

#

And honestly I can't really say much about this, I played clarinet back in high school

#

Did well enough though. Was usually first or second chair

#

But it was a very small band program

gentle moss
#

noice

plucky ridge
#

Sometimes I miss it, or at least the reeds

wooden silo
#

You also don't need to become the world's greatest clarinet player for it to be worth your while.

plucky ridge
#

Yep

lime gazelle
#

a stupid question then: why do something, when nobody knows you're doing it?

plucky ridge
#

So long as you're enjoying yourself, that's really all that matters

wooden silo
#

Unless you're Naruto Uzumaki.

plucky ridge
#

Because you like doing it

lime gazelle
#

I'm always under the impression that skills need to be shown

gentle moss
#

hah, no

plucky ridge
#

Eh, not really true at all

wooden silo
#

@lime gazelle Because it's fun.

gentle moss
#

i kept being good at bass to myself for ages

plucky ridge
#

I'm great at carrying all the groceries into the house in one go

#

But that's all for me

gentle moss
#

i didn't even let it get out intentionally. went to do a job fixing someone's PC and they had a bass rig so i had a little jam

wooden silo
#

if something is fun, that's immediately sufficient justification for doing it, no matter the context,

gentle moss
#

turns out he was a bassist for a band or something and started spreading positive shit about me

lime gazelle
#

but things become fun after you're good at it

#

while you suck, it's no fun

plucky ridge
#

Depends

wooden silo
#

Yes, sometimes that's true.

plucky ridge
#

But yeah, it can be discouraging

wooden silo
#

That doesn't mean you need to do it in front of people.

plucky ridge
#

But when you get over that hump it becomes so satisfying

#

Coding is a perfect example

wooden silo
#

I'm good at programming, and I get immense satisfaction from doing projects by myself at home, that never see the light of day.

lime gazelle
#

I haven't touched code in ages! GWmroTooScary

plucky ridge
#

When you break through and understand a concept or apply something you learned, it's awesome

lime gazelle
#

there's so much stuff I've left to rot, really..

wooden silo
#

I've got tons of projects I never showed anybody.

plucky ridge
#

Or heck, getting really good at video games (single player ones)

wooden silo
#

But building them was still super fun.

#

Engaging with a community and showing off your skills can be fun too, though.

lime gazelle
#

Like

wooden silo
#

It's just not a necessity.

lime gazelle
#

My reasoning is: if I'm good at something, I'll show it, and people will like it

#

I want people to like what I do, I think

wooden silo
#

That's an aspect of it.

plucky ridge
#

That's essentially what we do here as helpers and what not. But a lot of us also just love to code

wooden silo
#

It's not everything, but it's one side of learning.

plucky ridge
#

In the end, it should still be for you

gentle moss
#

^

plucky ridge
#

Other people come and go, are fickle with what they like or don't like, etc.

#

You're the constant in the situation. Why do something if you hate it?

lime gazelle
#

Because I don't know what I like?

plucky ridge
#

(Unless it's homework, stay in school kids)

#

Then you try all kinds of things. Even when you're discouraged with something like playing piano, if you still feel that satisfaction, you'll know you want to keep going

lime gazelle
#

Truly, I'd rather stay in bed and watch youtube/read mangas than do anything productive

plucky ridge
#

I get frustrated with computers all the time, but they're my absolute passion

wooden silo
#

Delayed gratification, or deferred gratification, describes the process that the subject undergoes when the subject resists the temptation of an immediate reward in preference for a later reward. Generally, delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more...

gentle moss
#

ยฌ_ยฌ

#

i was about to write something that would've totally meshed with that

#

but really not appropriate

wooden silo
#

Here staying in bed and reading manga is "immediate gratification", and learning to play the guitar is "delayed gratification".

plucky ridge
#

Just made me think of that

wooden silo
#

Haha, nice

#

@lime gazelle How old are you?

lime gazelle
#

21 GWeniSadNeko

#

I feel like, honestly, I've never liked anything I've done

wooden silo
#

the reason I ask is because fighting the temptation of immediate gratification is something I had more trouble with when I was younger

lime gazelle
#

it's not like I like reading mangas/watching YT videos either.

plucky ridge
#

There might also be another part to that.

wooden silo
#

And valuing and investing in delayed gratification is something that became easier as I grew older

plucky ridge
#

There's a possibility you might also just have depression. Not finding enjoyment in things you used to enjoy is one of the potential symptoms, and one I've struggled with for years

lime gazelle
#

I have tons of YT playlist that I've never finished to watch, because I lost interest/forgot about them

#

even stuff I enjoy, emulators and stuff, I'm not working on any of it.

wooden silo
#

This is something that everyone struggles with, to different degrees

plucky ridge
#

It might be worth talking to a doc about, if you feel it's interfering with your life

#

And yeah, true

lime gazelle
#

eh I'm going to a therapist, I've been going to docs for almost all my life

wooden silo
#

I've experienced this constantly throughout my life

lime gazelle
#

from 6 to 18 and now for a year

plucky ridge
#

Is this something you've brought up with them?

#

And I apologize if these questions are too prying

lime gazelle
#

that I don't enjoy anything? I don't remember if I did

plucky ridge
#

I just think it's worth mentioning to someone like that, especially if you already have the resource at hand, you know?

lime gazelle
#

yeah

plucky ridge
#

Could help you get the ball rolling in the right direction

lime gazelle
#

I felt like art/music would pull me out, you know?

#

Like, it would be a nice break to the monotony of my work/school lif

wooden silo
#

There probably is no silver bullet that will fix your problems automatically, but trying to find a hobby or passion is a good idea

golden walrus
#

@lime gazelle I can't give you real advice on what to or why you are like that but for many years I was in your situation

wooden silo
#

Don't get discouraged if the first thing you try doesn't resonate with you immediately

golden walrus
#

in fact, until I turned 25, and I didn't realize about it

lime gazelle
#

it's not like it doesn't resonate. Music and art are cool, I feel like it'd be cool to be able to do that.

#

Whip out a sketchbook and draw just for the fun of it, would be v peaceful

wooden silo
#

Maybe try managing your expectations, also

#

Don't expect to get amazing results in short order

lime gazelle
#

that, I certainly don't

wooden silo
#

Set small goals

golden walrus
#

idk

#

don't leave it to luck

#

but it took me even a lot longer than that to find a passion

wooden silo
#

Speaking of art

lime gazelle
#

I liked fighting!

wooden silo
#

@lime gazelle There was a talk here at PyCon Sweden about Processing.py.

lime gazelle
#

that, I feel, was a thing I really liked

golden walrus
#

only this year I started with programming which is something I've always loved

wooden silo
#

Did you try making procedural art?

golden walrus
#

but I didn't because I didn't feel like it

lime gazelle
#

not at all!

wooden silo
#

It seems pretty approachable

lime gazelle
#

hm

#

I have a book about algorithms

#

I wanted to do something like that, but never got around to actually do it

wooden silo
#

The guy made some super cool stuff very quickly and easily'

golden walrus
#

generative art is fun

lime gazelle
#

sounds interesting!

golden walrus
wooden silo
#

It compiles Python to Java, as I understand it

golden walrus
#

or is. it p5py?

lime gazelle
#

honestly I wanna go back to fighting GWunuFuelUp

plucky ridge
#

Like... actual martial arts?

#

Or we talkin' bar fights

lime gazelle
#

and well, maybe that will give me the necessary uh...jerk to progress with stuff

wooden silo
#

Nope, just street fighting

lime gazelle
#

martial arts ๐Ÿ˜„

plucky ridge
#

HADUKEN

lime gazelle
#

well, thanks for the suggestion @wooden silo I'll read some tutorials on processing GWunuFuelUp

plucky ridge
#

Manu, that is amazing

golden walrus
#

lmao the reaction?

lime gazelle
plucky ridge
#

Yeah

wooden silo
#

Yeah, it's great for that kind of stuff

plucky ridge
#

As I saw the arrows showing up I just started cracking up

golden walrus
#

haha

#

anyway, I'm out to face my next horrible 5 days

#

take care everyone

lime gazelle
#

ouch!

#

get better soon ๐Ÿ˜„

plucky ridge
#

Don't work too hard

wooden silo
#

Here's tons of examples of what you can do with it

#

And you can create your own sketches on there apparently

lime gazelle
#

oh wow

#

that's next level.

wooden silo
#

And you can see the code for all those sketches

lime gazelle
#

I shall make a schedule GWunuFuelUp

#

heard it helps having like, a routine

wooden silo
#

It's worth a shot

#

Also, even if you don't manage to stick to it, it's always ok to forgive yourself for that, and just get back on the horse and try again

#

Not sticking to a commitment is not something to beat yourself up about

gentle moss
#

^^^^^^^^^

#

cannot stress that one enough

wooden silo
#

There are no awards for how many commitments you stick to or not. The only thing that matters is how you move forward.

#

If you fail, just put it behind you and try again. Or try something else.

lime gazelle
#

I feel like there is something that would scratch all my itches: gamedev

#

but then again, same thing: why make a game that nobody will play?

sand goblet
#

For yourself?

wooden silo
#

And again, it can be fun to do for its own sake

#

It can be fun for you to play

sand goblet
#

Also, did you think Notch thought Minecraft would take off?

wooden silo
#

And again, you can't know whether others will play it or not

#

You definitely can't know that nobody will ever play any game you will ever make

gentle moss
#

unless it's a metal gear pachinko machine

lime gazelle
#

GWeniSadNeko idk what I want to doo

gentle moss
#

you can be sure no one would want to play that

wooden silo
#

Every gamedev makes tons of games that nobody plays before they make the first one that others do play

lime gazelle
#

gamedev would just be a way to roll art, music and coding all into one

wooden silo
#

Yeah, so what's wrong with that?

lime gazelle
#

the fact that the only thing I can half do is code?

#

but yeah, I shall learn GWunuFuelUp

sand goblet
#

Gotta learn somehow

wooden silo
#

You don't need to know anything before you start

sand goblet
#

This seems like good motivation

wooden silo
#

You could make procedural art with an audio component too

lime gazelle
#

wooo

#

slow down! slow down! GWmroTooScary

#

too many cool things.

wooden silo
#

Aren't you happy you were born into a universe with all of this inside it?

lime gazelle
#

kind of

#

when I have too many things I start to not be consistent and jump around

#

and eventually (in a week or so) forget about the stuff I was doing.

plucky ridge
#

That's why I can't play MMO's. My attention span for games is about 2 weeks or so

#

Python is probably the thing I've stuck with the longest

lime gazelle
#

Well I've found something(s) that looks nice

wooden silo
#

I can't play MMOs cause my wife would beat me.

#

And not in the competitive sense.

lime gazelle
#

i think it was something less rice cookery than that

good advice

plucky ridge

#

And make sure you wash the crap out of your rice

Gives it a much fresher flavor

That was kind of the prime age of 2D games

though i think the composer was a little depressed at the office when composing the very last song

FF3 ( SNES ) / FF6 ( PS1 ) is vastly better

The random dragons you stumble across, the characters you can miss getting

#

It's pretty damn great for an SNES game

||That, and the fact Shadow is a woman which is something you learn by pieces of story you can miss entirely.||

leaden flame

i consider mario rpg games to be VERY different from other rpg's

#

imo

rough sapphire
#

Well, we were talking about specifically Super Mario RPG for the SNES

#

But yeah, I understand you mean.

leaden flame

no i know. but i still look at super mario rpg w/ a similar mindset

rough sapphire
#

SNES had a bunch of neat games

#

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is fun to play

heavy jackal
#

Seven Stars? It definitely aged poorly. I would say that its best points would be the music and humour, with partial marks for the secrets and some decent puzzles. Otherwise, structurally, there's not much there.

I am hard-pressed to think of any other game where mario can canonically be smooched by bowser AND a weird hairy guy

undone berry
#

what are the advantages that MongoDB is seen as having, correctly or incorrectly, vs a traditional SQL db?

frosty berry
#

it's seen as fast and easy to use

#

afaik

#

and scalable horizontally also

#

2ย of these things are true, it's at the cost of security and reliability, but it's true

#

i don't understand how one can find the query language easy to use compared to sql though

#

sql needs to be learned, true, you can't just type english words and hope for it to work, but mongo is ugly and pretty much nonsensical for any complex need, using json to express queries is just, oof

undone berry
#

scalable horizontally = easy to make it support a lot of users?

frosty berry
#

when you get too many of whatever data to fit on a server or to query efficiently, you can add new servers and don't need to adapt your code

#

or not much

undone berry
#

ah - sure

frosty berry
#

discord published a blog about how they used mongo in the beggining, and it was suitable for a lot of users, though at some point it wasn't enough anymore

undone berry
#

I was speaking to a developer today who's company is about to adopt it

#

but it is only for relatively small enterprise stuff

#

which seemed crazy to me, but I didn't want to argue with the guy

frosty berry
#

well, it might suit them, although i would certainly side with you, it's probably not worth your time arguing

#

mongo has the same "issue" as php imho, it's easy to get started, too easy, and the pain comes later

undone berry
#

Yeah. That was my previous understanding, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything about it that was too obvious

frosty berry
#

the thing with being document based, is that you don't have to think about the details of your db, it's really easy at first, so much freedom, but then you understand that you can't make any assumption about the consistency of your data

#

and you don't feel free at all anymore

procrastination at its finest

#

I have an essay due

#

I have a total of 0 words down

#

same

#

except I actually have alot down

#

no im not done

#

not only that

#

I'm stumped on my code

#

I have a 504 so I get extra time

#

but not only that

#

the quarter ends in 12 hours

#

yikes

#

and not only that

#

my thing is due in a few hours

#

im actually already late by 2 weeks

#

bruh bomb

#

yeah thats me

#

the funny thing is

#

its so easy to bs but I just dont do a thing

rough sapphire
#

oh no I lol'ed at clinton..

#

probably gonna be made to disappear..

frosty berry
#

@rough sapphire this kind of thinking won't help you get started. If you want to do the thing, and you certainly are capable of doing so, stop overthinking it, or defaulting on it (thinking it's too late and you won't do it), just put aside distractions, and think of something even more important to work on, so working on the first thing is actualy procrastinating the second.

sand goblet
#

so tomorrow is payday

#

I've started taking an interest in physical pentesting and related

#

so I figured I'd order some picks and practise locks and have a go at 'em

plucky ridge
#

physical pentesting

#

You are a derp

sand goblet
#

am I? haha

#

physical pentesting is all about getting into places you're not supposed to be able to

solid pollen
#

That's worst

plucky ridge
#

Oh I know, just the phrase is so dorky. Just say lockpicking

sand goblet
#

I mean, it's not all lockpicking

#

that's just the aspect I've taken a direct interest in

#

since it's really interesting

#

although having watched a good amount of physical pentesting stuff recently it strikes me that there are probably a lot of problems at work that could do with rectifying

plucky ridge
#

It has to have been called something else before that though

sand goblet
#

I mean, it is what it is, brain in the gutter or not

#

haha

solid pollen
#

That remind me of that company that make security valve for nuclear centrals, that do daily sever backup and keep them in an unlocked vault

plucky ridge
#

Pen testing just makes me think of having a crap ton of like ballpoint pens or biros and just writing a lot to see which ones work the best

#

So I can never take it seriously

sand goblet
#

haha

solid pollen
#

I agree

sand goblet
#

noice.

#

but like if I look at my office door here

solid pollen
#

Now I just see gdude with dozen of pens in hands and just trying to test them

sand goblet
#

I can think of four ways to get through it unauthorised

solid pollen
#

Four?

sand goblet
#

yep

#

you could use an under-door tool, go over the door, use a hooked knife or something to pull the latch, or just pick the lock

#

there's probably more that I'm forgetting

#

at least the hinge is on the inside

#

yeah, the latch has no security pins

#

it'd be ezpz

solid pollen
#

Security pins are the pins that are in every direction to make the lock picking more difficult?

sand goblet
#

No, with a latch, usually there's also a security pin

#

When the door is closed, the pin is pushed into the lock, so you can't just push the latch open, you have to actually use the key

#

this latch does not have one

solid pollen
#

Oh yeah

#

I hope there isn't too much sensitive things in your office

#

Haha

sand goblet
#

this is the only office in the building

#

so it has basically everything in it

#

including two filing cabinets with extremely cheap locks

#

but I'm not gonna bitch about it until I can prove it

#

oh there's also a wooden board with hooks for every other key in the building

#

oh, I thought of another one

#

it's a wooden door in a wooden frame

#

you could place something in the doorway to widen the frame with enough force and then the latch wouldn't even matter

#

now if I was red-teaming I'd realise that basically nobody would do this to a community sports club

#

but it's still interesting to think about

solid pollen
#

You work in a sport club?

sand goblet
#

Yep

#

I think our site is a much more likely attack surface

#

but I'm working on that

solid pollen
#

Your website can contain sensitive information at least or it is just an average website?

sand goblet
#

it's planned to

#

they want to sell merch and do expenses submissions and room bookings and stuff

#

so that ain't happening

#

I bet you can't even load it

solid pollen
#

I can!

#

Slowly but I can

sand goblet
#

holy shit, it's not down?

#

haha

solid pollen
#

No it isn't :p

sand goblet
#

unusual

solid pollen
#

You host it on heroku or something? :D

sand goblet
#

It's on this host called siteground

#

they do specialised wordpress hosting for basically no money

#

but the database is so fucking slow that the site is down half the time

#

I'd show you the new one but it's not ready yet

#

that one is being built on squarespace

#

still needs work but it'll get there

solid pollen
#

How do you take screenshot that long??

sand goblet
#

Some phones have an option for it

#

OnePlus 7 Pro here

solid pollen
#

It looks way more modern than the current one haha

sand goblet
#

it's been a fun project

#

There isn't much left to do now

solid pollen
#

There is one thing that is triggering me since I started contributing for pydis projects..

sand goblet
#

What's that?

#

Wait, let me guess

#

Linting

solid pollen
#

No

#

Worst

#

WHY THE F** WEBHOOK DOESN'T USE MY PROFILE ICON!!!

sand goblet
#

I mean, why would it

#

Haha

#

It does seem to though

solid pollen
#

Wait you see it?

#

Because the default icon is horrible

sand goblet
solid pollen
#

Log out and in doesn't solved it

undone berry
#

solid pollen

I'm on phone

#

Ooooh

#

I cleared the cache

#

And it is back!!

#

@sand goblet so yeah now it is linting
