summer rampart
#

@rough sapphire by fuzzing you mean the generating garbage input to try and get unintended side effects right? Im not familiar

grim pelican
#

that's safer yea

tame pier
#

Yes

#

Fuzzing is trying input to see the effects

grim pelican
#

you're connecting to a network of the most talented hackers on the planet, you need to take serious precaution

tame pier

With the goal of finding a sexy effect you want from the thingy

rough sapphire

@summer rampart that's the โœŠ of it

i'm not a great person to ask, i know very little about security and pentesting

tame pier

grim pelican
#

a vm is a pretty good start though, i believe that's what HTB recommends

lime gazelle

I guess vm on athe throwaway laptop would be best

grim pelican
#

you can check the subreddit and discord server for more help

tame pier
#

hey G, whats up

#

why no event this weekend?

rough sapphire

a vm with an isolated network is good enough, no need to go all out with a burner laptop

tame pier

I woke up before 10 for no reason

lime gazelle

@rough sapphire my router is my cellphone trey

grim pelican

though a throwaway with kali on it would be dope

I was too busy with my family @tame pier

Did mention it in the announce channel haha

rough sapphire

@rough sapphire why?

You mentioned you were busy when I checked, wasn't sure what that mean gotcha

tame pier
#

Yeah mods

#

When role?

sand goblet

Haha

rough sapphire

it'd be pretty bad if someone managed to capture your IP, saw that your router web interface is exposed to wan, and that it happens to have a public exploit

@lime gazelle wan = wide-area network. Unless you're behind a corporate network or some other interesting setup, this means the internet

lime gazelle
#

@rough sapphire oh.

rough sapphire
#

you're probably thinking of lan, which is the local network

lime gazelle

No well, I thought you meant like

A city's or country's network

Idk if I'm remembering shit wrong from school tho trey

tame pier

Cities and counties don't have networks

tame pier

Thanks to entrenched interests and fucking bullshit politics, in the USA at least

rough sapphire
#

well, sure, I get what you mean, but at that point you're already exposed to the rest of the internet and intermediate devices will happily route to you

lime gazelle
#

Heck

#

Couldn't they route to my phone then?

#

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions

rough sapphire
#

you usually can't expose ports on LTE devices as you might share a public facing IP with another device and that just can't really happen, depending on your providers NAT implementation

#

but it's better to check anyways, better safe than sorry

lime gazelle
#

How do I check?

Or rather

#

What should I google

that's fine

good game but very much defined by its soundtrack, haha

grave phoenix
#

Idk if having a topical chat for async is a good idea

sand goblet
#

Seems a bit too specialized

grave phoenix
#

Well, async seems like a big topic to me, but that's why I'm doubting

oak tangle
#

It is, yeah. It's come up before as well. At the moment, I think a lot of the questions we see related to asyncio are related to discord.py and I'm not sure we see enough activity yet to really warrant a seperate topical channel. On the other hand, a lot of major frameworks are upping their asyncio support, like Django will do in their upcoming 3.0 release. I guess we'll have to keep an eye on it to see if there's enough asyncio-specific activity to warrant a channel.

I have not found any. All I have found are bots to schedule reminders and administrative stuff like that. Any ideas for a way to go?

rough sapphire
#

@sand goblet I wonder if anyone else remembers Crash Twinsanity - I've stopped caring about anything Crash, what with the complete joke that the recent racing game was.

sand goblet

I mean, Twinsanity was a PS2 game

we're going back quite a way

There's a lot of games I didn't play because the let down that was Link's Awakening.

I think he'll be gone before he can pull us out with no deal.

#

he's got something big riding on no-deal.... i'm sure.

#

same as Jacob Rees-Mogg

#

Tho, he's just a tax dodger... and new rules coming in would upset him.

gentle moss

parliament could hold a vote of no-confidence which would trigger a general election

rough sapphire

I think they were going to go with a unty goverment lead by ken clarke

or something

gentle moss

hard to fucking tell at this point

rough sapphire

i say hand the power back to the monarchy.

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

vapid bluff

does the eu care about that law

undone berry
#

The only way Parliament VONCs it up is if they immediatealy vote in a caretaker government

which would be my favourite world

#

gentle moss
#

Ken Clarke is a good choice for a caretaker i think

undone berry
#

I mostly agreee - but he doesn't want a second referendum though

#

which is a bit of an issue

#

He just wants to do a Norway and put Brexit to bed

gentle moss
#

yes but if he were to be caretaker PM i suspect he'd have to listen to the rainbow coalition of people who put him there

undone berry
#

all the opposition, plus the recently kicked out tories could very feasibly form a caretaker government

fossil solar
#

hey guys, i wanna know like the main differences btw the sql databases(mysql, postgres, etc).I belive postgres is the most popular, what is the actual reason?

#

and how is it diff from mysql

#

except for the syntax

sand goblet
#

It's a big ask to try to get people to explain that over a messaging service

#

They differ in more ways than they don't

#

You should seek an exhaustive list online if you need one

vestal briar
#

TL;DR (don't expect 100% accuracy): use postgresql for new stuff and use the rest if you need support for others

#

Ideally it shouldn't matter if you use an orm well

sand goblet
#

an ORM can't make up for the weaknesses of any particular DB

undone berry
#

All an ORM is doing is shifting the problem away from your code to the library's code - which can definitely cause more issues than it solves in some cases

fossil solar
#

okay

#

btw which db u guys use?

#

postgres/mysql/nosql?

#

excluding sqlite

undone berry
#

I use mysql because I have a fastcomet account with unlimited mysql databases

What happened

Who's that guy

gentle moss
#

he's the director of national intelligence

#

and trump did quite obvuious crimes

#

with shit loads of evidence

grave phoenix
#

So who's going to jail?

gentle moss
#

well it should be trump

#

he threatened to withhold military funding from ukraine unless the president investigated joe biden

#

using federal funds as a bargaining chip to fuck over your political rivals is very not legal

grave phoenix
#

oof

vapid bluff
#

joe biden's son*

gentle moss
#

yeah and by proxy joe biden

#

he tried to argue that joe biden was corrupt

#

and influenced the ukrainian government to not prosecute his son

#

while he was VP

#

which is total bullshit

#

so anyway, a whistleblower came forward and was like "not cool man"

#

and then people put pressure on trump to release the transcript of the phone call

#

so trump released a redacted version

#

which is still super incriminating

#

like... they tried to cover this up by not publishing the original transcript as they should have and classifying it for "national security reasons"

oak tangle
#

That's beause it falls under job security and, in this case, it's a national job, so national job security.

#

Looks nicely classified to me

gentle moss
#

:D

oak tangle
#

But, I did not yet read anywhere that the thing they released was redacted

#

Now I did

gentle moss
#

yeah, they tried to sanitize it

#

and did a really fucking bad job

#

since it still implicates him in crimes

oak tangle
#

That was probably the goal, though, but maybe they misjudged it slightly

#

Release a document that's slightly incriminating, but by far not as incriminating as the real document

#

If people don't pay attention, they may say "this isn't so bad"

#

I hadn't heard that it was redacted, but I have seen that latter line a lot: "this isn't so bad" and "is this all?"

gentle moss
#

yeah, that's probably from people who don't quite realise what a big crime it is

#

the full transcript would probably still have some people saying that

#

"idgi, doesn't seem so bad"

oak tangle
#

I'm not sure, I think the full transcripts has him threatening to withhold financial aid, which is more easily explained as something bad; it's very openly coercion.

#

There will be people still that don't get it, but far less

Dock panels are cool

#

But they are pretty personal

fossil solar

@rough sapphire suggest me something better

rough sapphire

mine is also auto hide, if u notice i have my cursor on it to show it off in the ss, lol

gentle moss
#

i like function really

#

all i need is like a 2.5 - 3% start bar (or autohide on win 10) and minimum title bar

oak tangle
#

I've set my borders on i3 to 1px and removed the title bars

#

Replaced it with the title of the window in focus in the bar

fossil solar
#

u guys dont use plank?

oak tangle
#

plank?

#

Oh, the dock

#

No, I don't really use a graphical dock now I'm using i3wm

fossil solar
#

okay

oak tangle
#

$mod+d to open applications

fossil solar
#

plank is pretty tho

#

wow

oak tangle
#

My mod key is the windows key

#

not the most ergonomic, but it's the least conflicting one

tired osprey
#

Mine is windows as well

oak tangle
#

anyway, I should make dinner before my gf gets grumpy

gentle moss
#

not sure why i'd need a dock

#

i have 6 desktops

oak tangle
#

wow

gentle moss
#

using desktops instead of windows

fossil solar
#

....

gentle moss
#

what?

fossil solar
#

6 desktops shocked

gentle moss
#

"workspaces" or whatever

fossil solar
#

aahhh

#

i thought u had 6 computers

gentle moss
#

lol no

fossil solar
#

that would be so insane

gentle moss
#

i prefer to work across spaces rather than with windows

#

it'd be easy to manage with synergy tbh

fossil solar
#

what are ur specs

gentle moss
#

on this laptop?

fossil solar
#

yea

gentle moss
#

nothing special

fossil solar
#

just a question, when we make a new workspace, does the memory divide across?

#

why are u using ubuntu 16

gentle moss
#

because i haven't upgraded yet

#

i have for my work VM's

tired osprey
#

And the answer to the firsty that wouldn't make any sense, every process just takes the RAM it wants

gentle moss
#

^

fossil solar
#

okay makes sense

#

does it lag ?

gentle moss
#

nope

#

i can jump between workspaces lightning fast

#

ctrl + alt + left/right arrow

#

you can move windows across with shift + alt + left/right arrow

fossil solar
#

jeez 11 days uptime

tired osprey
#

The majority of things not called gnome or Wayland won't lag on that machine

gentle moss
#

hah, that's not even my best for this laptop

vestal briar
tired osprey
#

My workstation at work has been up for 25 days now

gentle moss
#

that's my work layout

#

#

i need to replicate it at home

fossil solar

nice

#

if i make my pc sleep, doesnt it reset uptime?

vestal briar
#

Don't mind the bad lighting or random bin lorry

fossil solar
#

i just have 1 laptop

#

what is a toy doing there

tired osprey
#

I left from work an hour ago, why couldn't you have been doing this back then :(

vestal briar
#

No idea, I just keep it on my desk as an ornament

fossil solar
#

nice

oak tangle
#

I have something similar to Owez

fossil solar
#

another question

oak tangle
#

laptop left though

#

and I thought you meant physicial monitors, Bisk

fossil solar
#

so that extra monitor has its own cpu or connected to laptop?

gentle moss
#

oh lol

#

no

#

workspaces

oak tangle
#

I use 10 workspaces

vestal briar
#

I have a laptop I use for school and home and a tv for a nice big screen

tired osprey
#

Every i3 person does, don't they @oak tangle

vestal briar
#

I don't use workspaces, I should do though

gentle moss
#

workspaces are nicer than fucking around with loads of windows

oak tangle
#

yes, I guess

#

I've set one up to bind to different windows though

fossil solar
#

people use another workspace on a monitor or another cpu?

gentle moss
#

default on lubuntu is 4 i think, i upped it to 6 because i kept running out

tired osprey
#

We still got these FVWM freaks at work

#

Weirdos

vestal briar
#

Looks like ubuntu has an annoying workspace thing

#

Doesn't change all monitors

fossil solar
#

my question!!!!!!!!!

gentle moss
#

if you have an additional monitor

tired osprey
#

Hopefully nobody here is old enough to be insulted by that sentence

gentle moss
#

that's 2 monitors per workspace

#

rather than the 2nd monitor having its own workspace

oak tangle
#

1 = firefox
2 = terminal layout
3 = Sublime Text
4, 5, 6, 7 = random applications
8 = PyCharm
9 = Spotify
0 = Discord

vestal briar
#

Yeah

frosty berry
#

a workspace is just a way to group together a lot of windows, so you only see a group at a time

gentle moss
#

so if i plug in a monitor i have 6 workspaces but 12 "screens"

frosty berry
#

it doesn't have any effect on cpu or memory

fossil solar
#

so basically everyone who uses a monitor with a laptop ,its just another workspace?

gentle moss
#

no

#

it's part of the same workspace as the main monitor

vestal briar
#

No

tired osprey
#

No it's just anothe monitor

fossil solar
#

waat so the same stuff gets displayed ?

tired osprey
#

No

frosty berry
#

on windowsย 10 you have workspaces too, with win+tab+arrows i believe

tired osprey
#

You switch between workspaces

frosty berry
#

on osx it's been there for something like 5 years

#

on linux it's been there forever

fossil solar
#

so on my laptop and monitor i can have diff workspaces

frosty berry
#

yes

tired osprey
#

So one of them has your shell and your discord idk, next one has your editor and what not and so on

frosty berry
#

and you can switch to a different workspace on either

tired osprey
#

And then you just sketch

#

Switch

fossil solar
#

and i can plug in a keyboard mouse to control the monitor workspace?

tired osprey
#

You're overthinking thid

#

Vastly

#

Extremely vastly

fossil solar
#

idk, i have never used a monitor

#

i have a laptop

tired osprey
#

How are you talking to is then

frosty berry
#

you don't need an external monitor to have workspaces

gentle moss
#

haha

tired osprey
#

Yeah a laptop has a minor

#

Monitor

#

As I said you're overthinking this a lot

fossil solar
#

why do u use monitor

gentle moss
#

imagine a 2nd monitor as just having a bigger desktop that stretches across both screens

frosty berry
#

i have a laptop now, and i have around 10 workspaces now

gentle moss
#

it's still 1 desktop

fossil solar
#

whats the advantage of workspace ?

gentle moss
#

you can have lots

#

and switch between them

fossil solar
#

and still not lag?

tired osprey
#

You're not understanding what a workspace is iceman

gentle moss
#

atm i have chrome on one, discord on the second, gimp on 3rd

#

no

frosty berry
#

chat (discord and other stuff), mail, web, and some more for specific projects/work stuff

tired osprey
#

You're vastly overthinking them

fossil solar
#

what is workspace

gentle moss
#

exactly what it sounds like

#

a workspace

tired osprey
#

Just a set of windows

fossil solar
#

a copy of my desktop?

tired osprey
#

And you can switch between those sets of windows

#

And that's it

fossil solar
#

okay

#

does it affect performance?

frosty berry
#

no

tired osprey
#

It is just a display concept

frosty berry
#

it's just you show and hide some windows together

fossil solar
tired osprey
#

The effort is completely equal to when you'd displs all at once

fossil solar
#

so when should i be using workspaces?

tired osprey
#

It is not seperatijf anything except the window guis

rough sapphire
#

Virtual Desktops, woo \ o /

tired osprey
#

They can still interact and everything

fossil solar
#

im on linux, how to navigate

frosty berry
#

imagine you put a "1" label on half of your windows, and when you press 1, only the windows with that label are visible

rough sapphire
#

I'm like Ves and I too also have 10

tired osprey
#

Which Linux lol

fossil solar
#

ubuntu mate

tired osprey
#

And which desktop

#

/wm

frosty berry
#

and when you press 2, then only the windows with label 2 are visible

tired osprey
#

Idk for mate

rough sapphire
#

@fossil solar Either click or CTRL+ALT+ARROW_KEY_UP

fossil solar
#

oh yea

#

i have 1 workspace

#

oh no

#

i have 4

rough sapphire
#

4 is default

fossil solar
#

im using 1st

frosty berry
#

well, you can move things to the other ones and see how that affects how you work

fossil solar
#

i can open the same apps in WS2

frosty berry
#

or different ones

fossil solar
#

so if i take example of firefox, i can split my tabs across workspaces insted of clogging up all in one?

gentle moss
#

NO

#

you can split WINDOWS across workspaces

#

not tabs

#

.<

#

imagine having 4 desks

#

and on each desk you decide to put different papers

#

and you can swivel your chair to turn to each desk

fossil solar
#

okay in one i will open firefox, 2nd discord, 3rd sublime, 4th nothing? something like this

gentle moss
#

each desk is a different workspace

#

yes

#

like that

fossil solar
#

Ahh

frosty berry
#

well, you can extract half of your tabs to a new window, and move this window to the other workspace

fossil solar
#

okay

gentle moss
fossil solar
#

i guess WS is not useful if ur not using many apps at once

#

like 2 or 3

frosty berry
#

i like to have multiple firefox windows, but it's messy if they are all "normal" firefox, because when you click a link in, for example, discord, it'll open in the last firefox window you gave focus to

#

so for some i open incognito mode, as these ones don't act like this

fossil solar
#

i use only firefox xD, its fast

frosty berry
#

yeah, if you don't have more than a handful of windows, it's less useful

fossil solar
#

which is the best browser?

gentle moss
#

1 - chrome / social media
2 - discord only
3 - GIMP usually
4 - terminals when i'm doing shit
5 / 6 - overflow

frosty berry
#

i use named workspaces, i create them as i need them, just by moving to the name or moving a window to that name

#

they are destroyed when they don't contain any window and i'm not on them

#

i always switch to them by typing part of the name

rough sapphire
#

@fossil solar Personally, Firefox. As Chrome/(ium) is going to be killing uBlock Origin and will make it completely useless.

fossil solar
#

make firefox useless?

rough sapphire
#

@frosty berry Destroyed when not in use? Ew

#

@fossil solar Make Chrome/ium useless

fossil solar
#

okay

frosty berry
#

yeah, or they would accumulate pretty fast

rough sapphire
#

I've got 10 and 4 currently are in use

gentle moss
#

i played the long game with my home computer

#

i've been using firefox on it forever

frosty berry
#

now i have 10 or so because i had to reboot two days ago, but before that i had 20+

gentle moss
#

but then chrome got better and i didn't switch

#

"oh i'll swith one day..."

#

and now it's rolled around

#

cha-ching

#

being lazy pays off

rough sapphire
#

Firefox is pretty great

#

I've been using it since pre-2.0

gentle moss
#

it is

#

oh hey same

rough sapphire
#

2.0 brought TABS

gentle moss
#

ikr

#

revolution

frosty berry
#

yeah, that was crazy

rough sapphire
#

It was pretty amazing

frosty berry
#

"eat that, ie!"

fossil solar
#

okay so

rough sapphire
#

Then IE never really got it with the whole ad blocking thing

fossil solar
#

im working on a django project- terminal, sublime, firefox and caja, how should i use my workspaces

frosty berry
#

however you want, it's just a way to organise things

gentle moss
#

yerp.

frosty berry
#

i organise by projects + things that are always there

gentle moss
#

when i'm doing work on flask projects i keep a browser open in the workspace next to pycharm

#

so i can just dip back and forth

rough sapphire
#

Don't pay attention to either of them, there's a strict and stringent way of sorting, first you I'm kidding, do it however you want

fossil solar
#

so i think sublime + terminal in one and forefox in another? ๐Ÿค”

rough sapphire
#

Up to you

fossil solar
#

okay

frosty berry
#

basically, when you want to see things together, they go on the same workspace, when not, they go on different workspaces

#

it's like alt-tab, but for multiple windows, basically

fossil solar
#

ah okay

#

the makes it a lot clear

#

btw check out my first django project

#

it has a terrible name

frosty berry
#

i use i3 too, and i really like tabs, but i use tiling a lot as well

#

vertical and horizontal splits

sand goblet
#

Most people call it i3wm for that reason

#

Just like how we say golang and hylang

frosty berry
#

could probably be less the case if i used an IDE instead of vim + terminals

#

but i use it in other cases as well

#

yeah, i3 is confusing to google for, the ancestor had somewhat of a comparable problem, wmii, as a lot of searches returned microsoft documentation

gentle moss
#

yeah i did iceman

#

i like the ending of it particularly

#

"donk"

frosty berry
#

@gentle moss if you don't say to look at the top to understand what happens, it's not really easy for someone who doesn't know the concept to follow

#

it's just windows randomly appearing and disappearing

gentle moss
#

haha

#

didn't think of that

frosty berry
#

i know that because when i use my computer with someone else, they never know where to look as everything i do is keyboard driven, the focus appears to change randomly

#

i commonly zoom the terminal a lot and put it fullscreen, so there is no ambiguity

#

and :only in vim, to close all the other windows

#

:on for short

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

even on windows i'm not very fond of cursors

gentle moss

we often get customers complaining that their franking machine is broke

rough sapphire

the fuck is a franking machine

sand goblet

It's for franking

rough sapphire
#

frankly i don't know what that means

sand goblet
#

They add like, postage proofs to letters via a stamp

gentle moss
#

yeah

sand goblet
#

it acts as a postage stamp, cancellation and dated watermark in one

gentle moss

so you top up the franking machine and it'll print onto envelopes the postage fee

rough sapphire

oh i see

no more manually applying stamps

@solid pollen if youre searching for beginner friendly assembly do not touch x86, something like MIPS is gonna be a lot easier

rough sapphire

MIPS is great for beginners

solid pollen
#

@tired osprey I want to make (I still have a lot to learn) a compiler for a brand new language so need x86. Actually I already know a bit of asm like registry, stack, instructions and things like that but it's a bit old in my memory so I want to restart from the beginning (or I should say the _start).

tired osprey
#

In that case I would recommend doing the language part before, usually the parsing and analysis of your parsing results are gonna be at least equally hard if not a lot harder to the assembly.

Furthermore I don't exactly see the point in compiling it to x86 directly, you could either do LLVM or byte code instead which should both be a lot easier
