I've never had a 'programming' mind (which is why i'm doing a uni course on it), and redstone has always felt it has similar logic.

the south east rule is an entirely unintentional implementation detail

it exists because of the order that the official server iterates through some things

there would always be some kind of cardinal rule, it just happens to be south-east

Completely separate implementations

#

Bukkit, Spigot, Canary, Hmod, Forge, Fabric, Rift, Sponge, and anything else you've probably heard of

#

They all use the vanilla server

#

and then apply mods to it

#

that saves a lot of work because all of this behaviour is already there
