oak tangle
#

Okay

#

Haha

#

I was making an argument against sloppy journalism, you started defending it

sand goblet
#

I mean, are you trying to tell me you can't argue against someone's point if they came in after yours?

oak tangle
#

No

sand goblet
#

that's what it sounds like

oak tangle
#

No, not at all

sand goblet
#

this is getting too meta to be useful, honestly

oak tangle
#

Haha

plucky ridge
#

I think the point is you can play devil's advocate, but don't get hurt about it if you chose that position

sand goblet
#

wait what

#

who was playing..

#

huh?

oak tangle
#

It's my honest opinion that I think that tech journalist should not be sloppy in their reporting

#

And that they at least should know something about how tech and/or measurements work

sand goblet
#

oh, I agree with you on that

#

but I think your definition of sloppy differs

oak tangle
#

And, that was why I made my original comment

#

So, when I made my first comment, I wasn't arguing against you, I was remarking that the quality of tech journalism displayed here was sub-par by pointing out a really bad way of comparing temperatures in Celsius

sand goblet
#

I'm kind of lost at this point

oak tangle
#

I'm not sure why

#

Article uses percentages to compare degrees Celsius; Ves remarks that's stupid.

sand goblet
#

Yeah I'm still thinking of how to put that into words

oak tangle
#

That's how the conversation started

sand goblet
#

yes

#

but now the conversation has been handily turned away from that

#

okay, look

oak tangle
#

So, what was my point? That I think this is sloppy journalism

sand goblet
#

do you disagree that journalism intended for the masses should use terminology that most people understand?

oak tangle
#

Sure and it's perfectly possible to do that here without using incorrect percentages

sand goblet
#

yes

#

however

plucky ridge
#

Charts

#

That is going to be my answer for everything

sand goblet
#

linear charts? maybe

#

it would be very difficult to otherwise show a relationship in rise without a percentage

plucky ridge
#

Two bar graphs side by side

#

This one got this hot while running x program

#

That one got this hot while running x program

#

Boom

#

Comparable and easy

oak tangle
#

I don't even think you need those

plucky ridge
#

Need?

#

No

#

Want?

#

Yeeesss

sand goblet
#

if you're not going to have a percentage then it would be useful to give the user some idea of how much hotter whatever they currently use would run on a 4

oak tangle
#

The important message here is that the RPi4, under full load, runs much hotter and at such a temperature that the device needs to engage a protective measure (throttling)

#

80% is just an arbitrary number that doesn't mean anything and doesn't even tell you if it's bad

#

So, instead of sloppy reporting, do it right

sand goblet
#

yeah, which they did say before the percentages

oak tangle
#

I'm not arguing against that

#

I'm just saying that the percentages here are really sloppy

#

And I expect tech journalists to know that

#

Or at least the editor

sand goblet
#

really the problem I have here is like

#

if you were doing a percentage based on absolute zero

#

it would be.. well, a very small percentage, wouldn't it

oak tangle
#

I'm not saying that you should do that either

sand goblet
#

yeah I know

plucky ridge
#

The point here is

sand goblet
#

I just can't think of another way, short of providing some formula that most people wouldn't bother or be able to solve anyway, to give people some idea of how much hotter their current workload might run on a 4

plucky ridge
#

Chaaaaarrrrrrrtttttssssss

oak tangle
#

Just state that it will run 50 degrees celsius hotter, well above what's considered a normal running temperature

sand goblet
#

that wouldn't be true though

oak tangle
#

I mean, a journalist should know how to express themselves and it's really not that hard to avoid incorrect statistics here

#

Well, just report the temperature differnces then and interpret them

#

I'm not a RPi4 expert, so the terms I used may not be technically correct, but I gave it as an example

plucky ridge
#

"At this temperature, you can fry an egg. At this one, you can't."

#

"If you touched the board at this temperature, you're more likely to cry than you would if you touched the other board at its temperature"

sand goblet
#

I'm posing that some kind of percentage is the most user friendly way to express the likely change based on the temp the user has already observed

plucky ridge
#

More friendly than seeing that one bar is higher than another?

sand goblet
#

Not unless you can put your own temp into the chart

plucky ridge
#

You can

#

It's a chart

#

You decide the base

sand goblet
#

In a textual article though?

plucky ridge
#

They had a picture

sand goblet
#

Bearing in mind most articles aren't interactive

plucky ridge
#

You can have a picture of a chart

#

What am I missing here

sand goblet
#

Well let's say your chart showed a 20 degree difference when idling between the two models

#

Unless your temperature is the same or close to the temp shown in the 3B chart, the rise based on your temp won't be 20 degrees

#

That might be a good enough estimate for some uses though, I suppose

plucky ridge
#

The lowest temps aren't the trouble makers though

#

And honestly, your base line idle, and a program that maxes out the cards are enough

#

So 4 total bars

#

Boom

#

Done

#

And a little like

#

Icon of fire or a line showing where throttling starts

sand goblet
#

Hmm, maybe

sand goblet
#

I wonder if any of you guys remember that guy that was going on about KaiOS here

#

well I guess it's at least picking up a bit of steam

wet steppe
#

nice

#

KaiOS looks good for rly cheap phones

vestal briar
#

Why is mozillas new logo a soviet star

wet steppe
#

is that allowed

vestal briar
#

And on some mozilla pages now

wet steppe
#

wtf

robust sierra
#

wat

vestal briar
#

Hm

#

No change on others

robust sierra
#

when did they switch to soviet logo?

sand goblet
#

That's an old logo

#

2010 at least

robust sierra
#

o

vestal briar
#

Hm

vestal briar
#

๐Ÿค”

sand goblet
vestal briar
#

Fucking weird

wet steppe
#

oh yeah such a good movie

sand goblet
#

I trolled them so hard.

I had to field these denials pretty regularly on the Mozilla discussion groups; there was one guy in particular who posted long screeds every couple of weeks accusing us of being Nazis because of the logo. I'm not sure he really understood World War II, but hey.
wet steppe
#

the interesting thing is the director told the main actor to invent a back story
which never gets told in the film

sand goblet
#

Looks like around 1998

vestal briar
#

Strange

#

Wonder why no public sources say it

#

And why they made it on github

wet steppe
#

hmm

#

didn't know about this

#

I should read about history of Mozilla IDK what their story is

sand goblet
#

Don't forget, cookies are only cookies because there was a bakery below the netscape offices that they got cookies from every morning, and they couldn't think of a better name

vestal briar
#

Huh

sand goblet
#

Source: Chatted in person with the original founder

vestal briar
#

And hyper text transfer protocol is only named that because it is a hyper text transfer protocol

sand goblet
#

Well, it's a transfer protocol for hypertext, yep

vestal briar
#

:D

#

That's cool

sand goblet
#

Don't forget that links were also called hyperlinks

vestal briar
#

Yep

#

First website on the internet is weird

#

It is advertising what http is

#

Wow look a link

#

Heh they used CamelCase for html

sand goblet
#

They did, yeah

vestal briar
#

What is HyperText
Hypertext is text which is not constrained to be linear.

Hypertext is text which contains links to other texts. The term was coined by Ted Nelson around 1965 (see History ).

HyperMedia is a term used for hypertext which is not constrained to be text: it can include graphics, video and sound , for example. Apparently Ted Nelson was the first to use this term too.

Hypertext and HyperMedia are concepts, not products.

See also:

A list of terms used in hypertext litterature.
    Conferences
    Commercial (and academic) products
    A newsgroup on hypertext, "alt.hypertext" .
WorldWideWeb is a project which uses hypertext concepts.
    Standards . ```
#

It's just a fun little website advertising what most people in this world take for granted now

#

Only a quarter century ago

wet steppe
#

what do these bois actually do? https://www.w3.org/

sand goblet
#

it's an international community where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards.

wet steppe
#

oooh they do the standards for stuff like HTTP and XML it says

#

yeah

sand goblet
#

yeah

tame terrace
#

they set the rules that browsers adhere to.

#

webassembly is a w3c thing I think

sand goblet
#

it is, yeah

frosty berry
#

about everything about the web, yeah

wet steppe
#

the JS committee

frosty berry
#

yeah, js is a notable exception

#

webrtc, svg, html, css, etc are on them on the other hand

wet steppe
#

SVG is nice

sand goblet
#

I wish we'd get that image format that rises in quality the more of it you load

frosty berry
#

hm, apparently websocket got outsourced to whatwg

sand goblet
#

instead of loading rows of pixels

frosty berry
#

you mean progressive jpeg?

#

we had that in the 90s

sand goblet
#

no, not that

frosty berry
#

that did sound a lot like that though ๐Ÿ˜›

sand goblet
#

FLIF is what I'm thinking of

frosty berry
sand goblet
#

No, no, that's still loading rows

wet steppe
#

Note that iPhone Safari and Internet Explorer do not support progressive view.apple why

sand goblet
#

FLIF files are much smaller than JPEG anyway

wet steppe
#

it looks cool how the FLIF loads

sand goblet
#

FLIF also has some interesting use cases in mind

#

like for example, your phone can stop loading an image once it's at the highest resolution your device can handle

wet steppe
#

phones are often higher res than desktops now lol

#

so many 1440p phones

sand goblet
#

yeah but you get my point

#

for responsive web design you often won't need the browser to download the whole file

wet steppe
#

would be good for loading time yeah

sand goblet
wet steppe
#

wow yeah nice

#

smaller and sharper

frosty berry
#

https://bellard.org/bpg/ is also a nice image format, it has a fast javascript implementation in the browser so you can use it directly

#

doesn't seem to load progressively though, but it's much smaller than jpeg for similar quality

#

(or much better quality for similar size, take your pick)

wet steppe
#

ooh thanks

#

I bookmarked bellard

frosty berry
#

yeah, he's a monster

wet steppe
frosty berry
#

he made QEMU, and a javascript PC emulator that could run linux, and his own tiny c compiler, and also broke a longest pi approximation on a $3000 pc budget (using the algo he had designed to do that)โ€ฆ and so many things

#

and recently a javascript compiler that passes the latest specification of javascript, and can produce binaries from it

#

oh yeah, and he started ffmpeg also

sand goblet
#

FLIF does have a comparison to BPG

frosty berry
#

interresting

sand goblet
#

although as it states

#

BPG makes no claims about progressive decoding, but trying to decode an incomplete file does sometimes work.

wet steppe
#

RGBA is like Canon Raw ?

sand goblet
#

BPG does some real weird things if you try to load it progressively lol

frosty berry
#

no, raw is bigger again i think, it stores more info about the light

#

rgba is usually what your gpu sees in the end, it's a stream of 32bit values, one per pixel (8 bit per channel) usually

sand goblet
#

does the gpu see rgba?

#

not just rgb?

frosty berry
#

@sand goblet yeah that doesn't seem to be part of the design's aim

sand goblet
#

yeah

frosty berry
#

@sand goblet the gpu does blending

sand goblet
#

Ah right

frosty berry
#

it probably sends rgb to the screen though, not much sense in sending the alpha channel

sand goblet
#

right, right

frosty berry
#

unless it makes more sense to send it all without conversion, and let the screen drop it, i don't know ๐Ÿ˜›

brisk compass

me: doesn't work.
internet:
internet: do it again

#

wet steppe
#

๐Ÿ‘€

brisk compass
#

yes

rough sapphire
#

where's bisk

#

WHERE IS HE

#

:3

#

totally called it

#

@gentle moss

gentle moss
#

everyone fucking called it

#

the point was the comment isn't funny because we're going to have a self serving moron for PM

rough sapphire
#

note: make funnier comments โœ…

#

@gentle moss They are ALL self serving morons.

gentle moss
#

some are way worse than others

#

our prime minister makes more money by writing articles for the telegraph than doing his job as PM

#

ยฃ270k a year

#

was it the telegraph? whatever.

rough sapphire
#

wow.. that's a nice chunk of change

gentle moss
#

only gets ยฃ160k for being PM, iirc.

#

that's uhh....

#

not cool.

#

especially when that newspaper has been promoting him in politics while he's been working there

#

pretty skeevy

rough sapphire
#

I'm sure people don't read the telegraph all that much anyway..

#

are you sure it's just 160k.... I thought May was on course for a mil this year.

gentle moss
#

The Prime Minister is paid ยฃ150,402 a year. This includes the basic salary for a member of parliament which is currently ยฃ74,962

#

so MP salary + bonus

rough sapphire
#

plus all the extras

gentle moss
#

house to live in, driven around, etc

rough sapphire
#

like a house, etc.

#

whereas the majority of the people the represent struggle aorund on 30k a year.... others even less

gentle moss
#

yes

#

i think average household income is like ยฃ26k?

#

ยฃ28k

#

so he's making ยฃ270k writing an article every few months

#

and ยฃ75k for being an MP

#

now he'll get another ยฃ75k on top

oak tangle
#

Our prime minister earns โ‚ฌ 165.916 this year, including end-of-year bonus

gentle moss
#

i think the fact he makes a quarter of a million a year from a newspaper while being a member of parliament

#

is a bit...

#

fucked up.

#

even more so when he's PM

oak tangle
#

So, instead of the PM controlling the press, it's the press who've bought the PM?

wet steppe
#

@gentle moss he works in london
so the relevant number is the london average which is ยฃ33k

gentle moss
#

yeah kinda ves

#

huge difference apex _

#

damn it

#

i need to fix my keyboard, can't do my sarcastic eyes anymore

#

:(

wet steppe
#

28 to 33 is fairly big

gentle moss
#

yes, but he earns 10x as much

#

most of it coming from a newspaper

wet steppe
#

oh yeah its small relative to that

#

is he editor or writer

#

?

gentle moss
#

just a writer

#

article every couple of months

#

max

wet steppe
#

didn't know writer pays that well

gentle moss
#

it usually doesn't

#

but he's embedded in the Tory party

#

and an MP

#

and was a minister

wet steppe
#

I understand George Osb. being paid a lot cos he head editor

gentle moss
#

and now is prime minister

#

i believe it's access pay

wet steppe
#

hmm yeah

That's how i'd structure it

Seeing as nothing is used twice so no vars needed

i always assign inputs to variables idk why

rough sapphire

regardless if im even going to use it ever

vestal briar

I don't unless they are used twice or it makes code ugly

for me i find it makes it look nicer but harder to read from someone elses perspective

Yeah

I am working on a rewrite for a little rust crate

#

I will say some kids are stubborn. Some kids have self esteem issues and being shut down about an aspect of programming might be enough for them to shut down themselves on programming in general

sand goblet
#

yeah, you're right about that

#

everyone's situation is unique and it's best not to take a risk there

lime jewel
#

(Speaking as someone who shut down on art even without someone else criticizing me lol)

sand goblet
#

art is hard as heck

rough sapphire
#

^ like theres not much this is right/this is wrong - theeres common practice but a lot of it is just up to the artist

lime jewel
#

Yeah. Especially when you donโ€™t draw anything from the years of 5 to???? 16? 17?

rough sapphire
#

ive always been annoyed cus im creative as fuck like theres so much going on in my brain but i cant. put. it. on. the. paper.

sand goblet
#

yeah, that's the problem I have too

rough sapphire
#

it wont come out right and it doesnt look good pepe

sand goblet
#

however I have no real like

#

I don't want to be an artist lol

#

I wouldn't enjoy it if I was good at it

rough sapphire
#

yeah same i just would like to be able to doodle

sand goblet
#

I do enjoy web design, but I have the same problem there - I often can't translate my thoughts into CSS

#

good thing we have CSS frameworks

lime jewel
#

Have u ever gone back to look at art u did a while ago riot?

rough sapphire
#

??

lime jewel
#

The reason I ask is whenever I draw. It like physically repulses me I feel like I canโ€™t make it look good and I hate it

#

btu every time Iโ€™ve looked through art Iโ€™ve drawn in the past Iโ€™m actually fairly happy with a lot of it

rough sapphire
#

image spam imcoming sweatcat

#

and by spam i mean like another 2 pictures

#

this is some of the "art" (as well as some image editing) that ive done that i still hate

lime jewel
#

I rlly like them!

rough sapphire
#

theyre ugly

lime jewel
#

Im at work rn so I canโ€™t say a whole lot sorry

#

The brain is a rlly cool design. Anytime I try to do something along those lines I end up over complicating it and cluttering it. But I rlly appreciate your use of white space in it

#

the neon sign looking one is rlly cool. Howโ€™d you do that one? :D

rough sapphire
#

a lot of blur effects

#

as well as adjusting transparency and adding layer masks

#

most of it was just editing

lime jewel
#

same with the.. leather? Looks kinda like leather or smth. The lighting keeps it interesting but itโ€™s simplistic enough to easily grab the eye

rough sapphire
#

yeah same with the leather - that was a lot simpler than the neon

#

i just wrote riot in text - adjsuted the transparency so that it looked dark enough that it looked sunken in - then i selected the outlines of the text and added some blacks and whites

sand goblet
#

I haven't done much - if any - art or logo design

#

I've actually only ever made one logo I've been happy with tbh

rough sapphire
#

that looks really cool

#

ive never made anything im happy with

sand goblet
#

:>

#

it's also the only thing I've made in inkscape

#

took me quite a long time

rough sapphire
#

i use gimp

sand goblet
#

I needed a vector, so inkscape was my only option really

rough sapphire
#

i dont know anything about art so i dont really know what a vector is - ive heard of it before but

sand goblet
#

well when you work with something like gimp, what you have is a raster image

#

it's an image where each pixel is defined directly in the file somehow

#

a vector image is defined using math instead

rough sapphire
#

i like maths brainmon

sand goblet
#

because of this, they're usually infinitely scalable too

#

hence, we have SVG

#

scalable vector graphics

rough sapphire
#

ahh

sand goblet
#

there's no pixellation because the file isn't an image, it's instructions on how to render an image

#

for example

#

if you download the SVG for the M in the logo and open it in a text editor

#

it's a really neat way to do it

rough sapphire
#

downloading inkscape to try rofl_lemon

#

flag_agender i still dont understand why these flags are here

sand goblet
#

Most recent seasonal event was LGBT pride month

rough sapphire
#

ahhh

sand goblet
#

A new season with new emoji hasn't come in yet

#

Inkscape isn't like any editor you've used, if you don't know vector

#

It takes some getting used to

rough sapphire
sand goblet
#

Since everything is made up of paths and lines

#

There's no drawing

#

No pixels

rough sapphire
#

my life moto is wing it until something breaks and then learn it

frosty berry
#

inkscape is cool

#

i broke it though, dunno if they fixed it ๐Ÿ˜† i just reported the bug and it came from a library they had vendored in a decade ago and never updated ๐Ÿ˜†

#

hopefully they got ride of that version and linked to the updated version instead

sand goblet
#

You'd hope so

expected pay: try something bigger that what you earn currently ๐Ÿ˜› if you are not desperate for a job right now, you can try significantly more (and do some market research to know how much people in similar jobs in your area are paid, to ask above median), if you are, probably put somewhere around the minimum you could get by. It depends a lot on your situation. It depends on the job.

rough sapphire

I earn nothing currently - not consistently anyway

#

so any money would be REAL GREAT

#

expected pay : yes

#

i just need a job

any job - ive applied at a bike shop

#

im also waiting to hear back from a couple retail stores

#

i got rejected my mcdonaldsthe other day so my expectations are low

frosty berry
#

๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

if you are there, you probably have some dev knowledge, did you try for entry-level jobs in that?

rough sapphire
#

i dont think id even get like entry level tbh i really need to start committing - my "4 years of coding experience" translates to the skill level of someone whos been really trying for about 3 months pepe

frosty berry
#

Are you sure you are that bad? It's not uncommons for devs to only see their flaws

rough sapphire
#

I mean i think so - i also have a lot of "bad practices"

frosty berry
#

Do you have any personnal project to show? Don't worry, a lot of people show aweful code and are doing fine

rough sapphire
frosty berry
#

It's never too late to fix things, and i'm sure you learned things, whever you learned the good way or the bad way, you have something to compare to

rough sapphire
#

I think an issue i have is - if learning something looks complicated - i will find the LONGEST work around to avoid it

#

it wasnt until my late 3rd year of learning python that i started learning classes cus i was so scared of them

frosty berry
#

Ok, you certainly need a mentor to teach you how to organise code

rough sapphire
#

oh god yeah i just shove things everywhere

frosty berry
#

Yeah, don't do that, learning new things is usually easier and more fun than it looks

rough sapphire
#

it probably doesnt help that when i was taught python in school - it was kinda by someone who clearly didnt really know what they were doing

#

yeah ive started learning classes - ive also started learning databases recently

frosty berry
#

Anyway, it's not a flaw, you can definitely remedy that, even on the job if you find one where they are ready to mentor, considering the high demand in some place, and since you are going to start cheap for them, it's plausible

#

Learn git, put your thing on github, start refactoring to use shorter functions, named well, then classes, your code will get better

rough sapphire
#

im trying to install git and its asking me about a text editor but when i select Sublime it wont let me hit next pepe

when using kubernetes, if you want to assign a specific domain to a load balancer used for one of your pods, you have to do it by specifying the ID of the lets encrypt SSL cert for that domain
