Kotaku and their usual journalistic integrity..

sinful copper
#

or maybe the developers gave inconsistent statements

#

I think this quote justifies the PC Gamer story's original characterization:
Update: After this article was published, Triternion stated on Twitter that it does not have plans to include a setting which disables the appearance of "characters that arenโ€™t white," and never did. This contradicts statements developers Mike Desrosiers and Andrew Geach made to PC Gamer last week and which we reported in this article.

During our interview, we asked, "Are there plans to increase, on the character creator side, the diversity of the characters players can create? You've talked in the past about adding female playable characters and changing character's skin tones ... is that something you guys are committed to doing?"

Desrosiers replied, "That goes back to a similar situation as the chat filters. Whatever stance we take officially, some group of people are going to be upset with us. And so, ideally weโ€™d put the power in the playersโ€™ hands, and give them the option to enable and disable different things.

"There has been endless debates about it, and it attracts a lot of toxicity, a lot of stuff weโ€™re not interested in attracting to the game itself, any more on top of whatโ€™s already present. But weโ€™re definitely always looking at ways of expanding [our customisation]."

Later, after Geach explained how Triternion might go about creating new character customization options, such as female characters, black characters, and Middle Eastern characters, we asked, "So current thoughts on that, as Mike said, maybe adding that and then giving the option for players to disable it? Is that the current thinking?"

Geach replied, "Yeah, that seems to be the current thinking. Itโ€™s not set in stone, it depends how our community is in the future. Maybe if it calms down in the future, the game still has a lot of players, a lot of toxicity, a lot of racism, a lot of politics, everything, people argue in chat about all sorts of nonsense."

grave phoenix
#

/shrugs It's an in-game option so I see no problem

#

As long as it's not forced

sinful copper
#

What game has ever had an in-game option to disable other people's customized characters?

#

it's unprecedented

grave phoenix
#

Wait, then that's different

#

I was thinking in an offline history scenario

#

What's the point on adding such customization if it can be disabled?

sand goblet
#

That doesn't sound like what they meant at all

#

It sounds just like any character creation system - you can pick what you want your character to have, enable/disable features, etc

#

It was a response to a question that was too broad to begin with

sinful copper
#

that doesn't make any sense

#

Not choosing a customization option for your own character doesn't "disable" anything

sand goblet
#

Yeah but he didn't say that

#

You can't have a natural conversation and constantly get stuck on very specific terminology

sinful copper
sand goblet
#

I can't visit that, my pi-hole blocks it for some reason

sinful copper
#

"The realism complaint is valid, so when we add them we might add a simple client-side toggle (for both female and male characters) which would let you disable them. " seems pretty clear to me what they meant

sand goblet
#

That isn't enough context, so, no, it's not clear

lilac glade
sand goblet
#

A toggle that would let you disable character genders

#

OK, so not anything to do with race

sinful copper
#

it's the same kind of thing, it was in response to a question about gender

sand goblet
#

That one actually makes sense though

#

It's a medieval era hack and slash game

#

If we're talking realism, and they are, most knights would have been male

sinful copper
#

yeah extremely realistic, you can parry a mace with a dagger or beat someone to death with a guitar

sand goblet
#

I don't see your point

sinful copper
#

for some reason the only "realism" people care about is a lack of diversity, not actual realistic combat simulation or historical accuracy in only having equipment consistent with a single era etc

sand goblet
#

Actually I don't care about realism at all

#

You can however have a realistic setting and unrealistic mechanics in order to make a game balanced or fun to play

torn ridge
#

if it was a gender toggle, there would be thousands, or we talking about a "sex" toggle ๐Ÿ˜„

vestal briar
#

A toggle

sand goblet
#

My take on it is that they should be free to implement all the toggles they want, one they're equal opportunity toggles

vestal briar
#

It's just 16 toggles arranged as binary

#

I am tired, forgive me mortals

sand goblet
#

If you wanna let people turn off dudes then you should let them turn off chicks too

#

But that does seem to be what they're doing

vestal briar
#

The game should have playable female but npcs should be prodominantly male (~90%)

its a game, people are enjoying it, who cares?

vestal briar
#

It's like peta but a news website!

lilac glade
#

They've stated that they don't have the manpower to actively do so while developing for the game in the capacity that thye are.

#

Community monderators are their first defense, and it doesn't seem to be doing too well.

sand goblet
#

Well they also said they wanted to take a light touch approach to avoid becoming another censoring party

#

Which I kind of get

torn ridge
#

they should just do what league does, your "report" goes into the void, and if there is enough outrage that person gets banned for a month

sand goblet
#

It doesn't go into the void

#

There is a reason you can pick that does go into the void though

#

The "I don't like this player" option

sinful copper
#

I think it's disingenuous to suggest that this wasn't what the original quotes were talking about, and that the developers were simply backpedaling and relying on the technicality that their idea for a toggle hadn't developed far enough to be called "plans", and it's unfair to characterize the PCGamer article as lying (also why all this focus on Kotaku, they were just recycling PCGamer's reporting)

sand goblet
#

It appears to be a legit report reason but it doesn't actually get sent

#

@sinful copper I don't think pcgamer lied

#

But that isn't what pcgamer said either

#

And kotaku decided to make a whole article about this one, rather hyperbolic, point

sinful copper
#

anyway this kind of stuff is hardly unique to mordhau

#

literally every game in a medieval-ish setting attracts a crowd of "there were no white people at all in Europe, or at least none who mattered, so non-white players shouldn't be allowed to play characters who look like themselves"

torn ridge
#

does anyone use facebook?

#

i know its a bad thing to admit, but you're in a safe space

#

its being REALLY weird for me right now, images are being blocked and im getting this!

sand goblet
#

I didn't see many people complain about the witcher, @sinful copper

#

There was a small set of complaints, it was explained that this was the setting, and the complaints stopped

plucky ridge
#

@torn ridge I've heard from some folks that it's acting weird. And the text you're seeing is (I'm guessing) some image analysis for accessibility purposes

sand goblet
#

The developers of this game have clearly decided they wanted to give their players more choice

#

But that they wanted to keep some toggles around so people could play the game they wanted to play

torn ridge
#

thanks @plucky ridge

#

i just got this

sand goblet
#

Also yeah Facebook is broken atm

plucky ridge
#

HA

sand goblet

Those are always in the alt text

vestal briar
#

Um

torn ridge

its funny to read ๐Ÿ˜„

vestal briar
#

Haha

#

Hm everything had an error then was fine

plucky ridge
#

Good to see that they do have those accessibility things for folks with vision problems, though. That's a use of image analysis I had never thought about before.

vestal briar
sand goblet
#

It's a great idea, yeah

#

Although the ones I see are less useful

#

"Image may contain: girl, standing, shoes"

torn ridge
#

i think i prefer it ๐Ÿ˜„

plucky ridge
#

Still, it's progress. And if you know who the image is of, you at least get the gist

XML configs

so, its redeeming feature, is... it has xml configs, that arent really xml, but kinda xml..

๐Ÿ˜„

sand goblet

that's not a redeeming feature

#

:P

#

that's a big weakness

torn ridge

wait nginx has xml configs

or apache does

sand goblet

apache

#

nginx configs are like

#

server {

    server_name bot.ultros.io;

    ssl_certificate /etc/letsencrypt/live/bot.ultros.io/fullchain.pem;
    ssl_certificate_key /etc/letsencrypt/live/bot.ultros.io/privkey.pem;

    client_max_body_size 16M;

    location / {

    }
}
vestal briar
#

Plug of your ts bot rewrote 20 times for different python versions

torn ridge
#

so, i should switch because the config looks prettier

vestal briar
#

Also because it is faster with static content

#

Marginally faster with dyamic

sand goblet
#

it's just generally easier to understand

vestal briar
#

Configs are really nice

#

Can be used as a proxy server

#

Can be used as a load balancer

sand goblet
#

can be used as a mail relay for some reason

vestal briar
#

NGINX gives you a whole ecosystem, not just a simple content server (though it does that brilliantly)

#

Basically no reason not to use it

#

Both are C so they both have around the same install size, I am presuming nginx is slightly smaller

sand goblet
#

the apache project is great at maintaining old software that nobody should actually be using

#

maven, archiva, apache http, tomcat

vestal briar
#

200m lines of code said on website

#

Hm I thought maven was something else

#

Whats a python module to make printing look nice

so you're saying i should switch to nginx from apache..

twilit marlin

vestal briar
#

Hm

#

If you pass in a tuple with 1 value it is a string

#

But how do you detect that

sand goblet
#

come again?

#

@vestal briar

#

you might want to explain that a bit better

vestal briar
#

Nevermind

#

It was just me being dumb with python converting ("hi") to "hi". Example of why it does this is multi-line strings: py my_string = ( "ejrgbhgbhgbhgbhgbtrh" "jfgbjnrjjbgnjgbn" "\n\n" "even more spam would go " "over here but I am not bothered" )

sand goblet
#

well that is not a tuple

vestal briar
#

Yeah

sand goblet
#

("hi") is just "hi" in brackets

#

but ("hi", )

vestal briar
#

Like how you make an empty set

sand goblet
#

now that's a tuple

vestal briar
#

Yep

narrow comet
#

@vestal briar I don't want to live in a world where I do (1 + 2) and Python makes a tuple

vestal briar
#

Hm

#

Oh no I just had a brainfart and forgot

tame terrace
#

@torn ridge nobody is answering your question

#

the answer is yes, you should switch from apache to nginx.

sand goblet
#

Oh, sorry

#

Yes, absolutely

tame terrace
#

nobody really uses apache anymore.

sand goblet
#

LAMP has been dead for some time

#

Apache is used mostly by those Web hosting companies using cpanel

tame terrace
#

also you guys were talking about apaches huge suite of software nobody should use

sand goblet
#

I had the.. Pleasure.. Of using the most recent cpanel today

tame terrace
#

here's a prime example

sand goblet
#

It hasn't changed a bit in 10 years

#

Well that is at least better than tomcat

#

It looks like it was made in the last 15 years

#

I liked the spark framework

#

It was like flask, for java

tame terrace
#

wicket is basically a complete java web framework where everything is rendered on the server and every interaction with the page triggers an API request which generates code and injects it.

#

there's nothing but html and java

sand goblet
#

Wait what

#

What?

#

What.

#

No.

tame terrace
#

it's such a fundamentally bad idea.

#

the people I work with love it

#

they want us to stop using python and change everything to wicket

#

that's one of the reasons I quit

sand goblet
#

Can't say I blame you

#

Have you worked with Maven at all?

#

That thing is a real dumpster fire

tame terrace
#

no, but it looks like garbage

narrow comet
#

do you work with them or did you quit

tame terrace
#

3 months notice

#

so,.. both

narrow comet
#

ah okay

sand goblet
#

It's like pip to java

#

It's the standard

#

And it's fucking horrifying

#

XML everywhere, over reliance on modularity, weird undocumented behaviour

#

More annoyingly, a completely undocumented repo format

tame terrace
#

yeah, xml, there's a surprise

sand goblet
#

All the Maven repos are terrible too

#

Archiva, artifactory, nexus, all hugely painful to set up and run

#

I run the Maven repo for Glowstone and let me tell you

#

I am not updating nexus again

tame terrace
#

haha, did I tell you about the CFO at my new company, we were talking about how sometimes you can keep working on an excel spreadsheet until it evolves into a piece of software

#

and he told me that he had written this sheet that was supposed to track the current prices of car sales

#

so he'd input data from this website

#

and make a ton of calculations

#

and then after a while he figured he'd try to write some VBA to fetch some of the data programatically instead of constantly inputting it

#

and ended up writing a webcrawler in VBA

#

because in VBA, you can read XML

#

and if you treat html like XML..

#

well it sorta works

#

you can parse it

#

it's just really.. fucky

sand goblet
#

Hahaha

#

That's horrifying but I love it

tame terrace
#

so he parsed the raw html as XML and then got all the data he needed and put it in the sheet, and made a macro that would execute every time he opened the sheet

#

talk about taking excel to its limits

#

super fun

sand goblet
#

That's some real ingenuity

tame terrace
#

yeah exactly

sand goblet
#

I remember a long time ago my mom gave me a word document

#

Back in the days of Windows 95

#

It had a button in it and clicking that button gave you a full clone of sokoban

#

I was amazed at the time

sand goblet

That's pretty amusing

tame terrace

not really a game, though

vestal briar

Instead of compiling directly to binary, you can "transpile" (compile to anohter language). That language is LLVM IR (an "intermiddiate representation", basically a weird state between human and computer that is hard to write but easy for a computer to understand). LLVM then compiles this IR into binary for a platform like 32bit, 64bit or ARM.

This allows languages to be tied together through LLVM ir more & have a standardized way of adding new platforms to compile to, it essentially brings compilers together

how difficult do you think it'd be to set up a live ISO on a partition at the end of the disk, and then have the thing boot into it

gentle moss
#

from grub bootloader

#

or some shit

sand goblet
#

the problem is that the image has to live on the same hardware that I'm installing to

#

I guess you could do it with a kvm but I'd need to pay for them to attach it for a while

gentle moss
#

what is the "rescue system"

sand goblet
#

it's some debian thing

#

you have them boot you into it and you get emailed the SSH details

gentle moss
#

and from there you have full control over the virtual machine from what is essentially a "live" environment?

sand goblet
#

these aren't VMs

gentle moss
#

but you can upload a raw image file and say

#

create a new partition

sand goblet
#

sure, I have root, yes

gentle moss
#

and dd that raw image to the new partition

#

then modify the boot sequence

sand goblet
#

I guess what I'd have to do is leave it on there somewhere

#

I have no access to like the bios but I guess I can configure GRUB

gentle moss
#

does my solution make sense though? because that's sorta what i'd do

#

and yeah, configure grub to point to the new partition with the DD'd ISO

#

i think that makes sense

sand goblet
#

It's a shame I can't like, resize a partition while I'm using it

#

then I wouldn't need the rescue system

gentle moss
#

i thought gparted let you do that

sand goblet
#

I think it depends on the filesystem

gentle moss
#

ext4?

sand goblet
#

yeah

#

of course, I can't guarantee I can SSH into the live system

#

guess I can chroot in and set that up

#

oh right

#

the swap is at the end

#

well okay

#

yes, it can't be resized live

#

but I think the swap is large enough, if I just removed it I should have space for the ISO

#

anyway I'm not doing this right now, but it's an idea

gentle moss
#

i'm sure there are ways
